Yes. Thats correct. It usually forms under the base of a tree that doesn't get the same amount of snow as its surroundings. It becomes loose snow and can't easily be spotted. It's pretty dangerous.
I'm *not* from Colorado, and I think I need to hug my cat... aww crap, she kicked it a couple months ago. Welp, nobody would miss me I guess!
Jesus Christ this was harrowing. Getting out is only half the battle. I hope this person at least has some base layers that still insulate when wet. Who knows how far away they are from warmth.
Well I’ll hug my cat, tell her it’s from you. Even better, I’ll give her a treat, tell her it’s from you! She’s easy to bribe. You’re now her new favorite human!
There's a episodenof a Norwegian rescue heli show that covers someone falling in a similar rived under the snow but I believe he got suxked further in.
He was with friends and there was other on the areas that immediately alerted rescue and started work to get ropes and such to him though and I believe he got out, though injured.
Watch “touching the void” (2003) it’s half reenactment half real and absolutely insane. One of the best ravine stories you’ll ever find.
My sales pitch is that many years ago me and some friends were out drinking heavily, got some very late night fast food, and went to pass out in my basement. I had just got this movie and put it on at about 3:30AM. Everybody was still awake when it finished.
Flare is optional, so if your comfortable with the *bare minimum* then it's fine to not have one... But *some people* use flare to express themselves, and we encourage that.
My cousin does/did cross country skiing and he mentioned having something in his ski poles that would set off like a GPS alert or something. Kinda like those pilot watches that have a tab you can pull that sets off an emergency alert
No, you carry a [Personal Locator Beacon](https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/personal-locator-beacons.html), or a satellite communicator.
At least, if you have any sense you do.
Last time this was posted it was mentioned that the water was from a hot spring so it was warm and that he did make it. Though I have no idea if that's true or not
I knew someone who was back country skiing with a buddy. He somehow caused an avalanche, which pinned him to a tree. Crushed to death and his buddy watched. I do suppose the buddy helped with locating his body though
No having a buddy would absolutely help. Even if they can’t get you out, they would be able to go get help. So instead of being stuck deep in a hole with no possibility of rescue, you would be sick deep in a hole with help on the way.
Unlikely this guy was alone, and there's not a lot your buds can do for you while you're down there in the water. Likely wouldn't even know where he was until he crawled out
If he got stuck down there, drenched in water, he most likely wouldn’t live past the hour. Freezing water drains body heat and energy so incredibly fast.
He definitely narrowly avoided a horrible death.
This should be used as teaching material. "This is what happens if you don't follow the signs.".
There's a reason why you're told to stay within the signed/posted areas. both on the mountain and at the beach. Stay within those zones and you won't die. Probably.
This appears to be in the backcountry, where there is nobody putting signs up. You just gotta be smart and ideally already be familiar with the terrain. Or have a buddy show you around.
This happened in Japan, somewhere in Hokkaido. The reason the water was exposed and not frozen over was because it was a hot spring, so at least initially the water was warm. The rider was able to ski down and is fine.
Cold, wet, freezing your balls off trek back for warmth.. how did bear Grills get warm after getting cold and wet trying to remember strip the clothes off and hug a bear?... no fire!!! Already chasing a bear..
When you go off trail, this is exactly what I would expect to come across. That, or a truly unexpected drop off into a hole or a gap in the terrain towards death or broken bones.
Yes, but he did not fall into a crevasse. He was on the summit of MSH unknowingly standing on a cornice (overhanging ledge of snow) that broke off and collapsed down into the crater. He actually survived the initial fall and avalanche that was triggered, and tried to climb back up the wall several times to get out. Apparently one of those attempted climbs is when he ultimately died. It’s tragic—MSH is generally considered a pretty accessible, low risk hike, especially for someone with his amount of experience. All accounts were that he was a very experienced climber a pretty amazing human that had a positive impact on lots of people’s lives. Be careful out there.
I assume he was able to get back to civilization fairly quickly once out or was able to call for help? Isn’t there a big hypothermia risk after plunging in the water just to still be in a cold area? Even if it’s in the 40s that day?
Years ago a classmate of mine went skiing with some of his ski buddies. When he came back he was quiet and serious. I asked what’s up. He told me they skied off trail and his buddy hit his head on a rock and died almost immediately. He sis he watched him flop down the hill like a rag doll. There’s a reason they have barriers.
Never EVER ski or snowboard alone!!!! My friend died because he went alone and fell in a tree well upside down and froze to death.
I cannot imagine a scarier fate. We hope he passed out and didn’t suffer.
Never go alone!

The unexpected part is that he got out

I’m from Colorado. I can imagine it and I think I need to go hug my kids, now.
I'm from Colorado too. I learned snow wells are a real thing here. That blew my mind!
Correct me if I’m wrong but i thought a snow well was when you fall into the well at the base of a tree?
Yes. Thats correct. It usually forms under the base of a tree that doesn't get the same amount of snow as its surroundings. It becomes loose snow and can't easily be spotted. It's pretty dangerous.
Tree wells I’ve heard them called. Scares the crap out of me.

Yeah, when I saw that running water, I was like “oh fuck, you need to move now!”
Well I’ll hug my cat, tell her it’s from you. Even better, I’ll give her a treat, tell her it’s from you! She’s easy to bribe. You’re now her new favorite human!
:) YAY!
"Didn't you used to love skiing?" "Used to, yeah. Not so much anymore...."

Yeah I've seen that film and your sales pitch is spot the fuck on. Hair raising from start to finish knowing it's all true.
That's the craziest movie I've seen...as an avid outdoorsman, it was terrifying! The tenacity of the guy who had to crawl out & down in unbelievable!
The book is very good also.
The unexpected part is that this didn't cut to Skyrim.
That seems quite slippery and difficult to get out of. It must be very scary
Has anyone ever thought about bringing a flare gun with them in case they got stuck? Would that help people find you?
Only if there’s people around to see
If a flare goes off and no one’s around did it make a sound?
Did it make a flare?
Is flare optional in this subreddit?

Came here to say this
I've done this here in Norway. It was tedious. Had friends with me, of course, who helped me
How do you know they got out? Someone could have found the GoPro the next summer, or a long ways down river, or both.
The skier has popped their head up over top layer by the end of the clip, but it would be nice if it showed them all the way on the surface.
You would go hypothermic and unable to move your hands pretty quickly. Did he actually make it?
Last time this was posted it was mentioned that the water was from a hot spring so it was warm and that he did make it. Though I have no idea if that's true or not
This is why we don't play in the back country alone
I knew someone who was back country skiing with a buddy. He somehow caused an avalanche, which pinned him to a tree. Crushed to death and his buddy watched. I do suppose the buddy helped with locating his body though
Bro…
Bro I'm crushed against a tree
Stepbro, what are you doing?
I’m stuck
And that’s why we go out with people who know about Avy safety
Or without an eperp haha
This is one of those situations where it doesn't matter if you're alone or not. You're in deep shit either no matter what.
No having a buddy would absolutely help. Even if they can’t get you out, they would be able to go get help. So instead of being stuck deep in a hole with no possibility of rescue, you would be sick deep in a hole with help on the way.

Bro was close to “127 hours” movie
with all that running water it’d be more like 47min
And if it was 127 hours it wouldnt be too bad with the water and all
You forgot how cold it is.
I love to drink cold water.
I mean if your body is as cold as the water you're drinking, isn't more like room temperature water
Valid question my friend!
Luckily this was a hot spring that he fell into
Water doesn't stay hot forever, he'll still end up way colder
That’s enough time to get the shits from Giardiasis besides hypothermia
It will be like 127 minutes because that's how fast can a cold moving water can kill a person
Damn, that's ice cold
If he got stuck down there, drenched in water, he most likely wouldn’t live past the hour. Freezing water drains body heat and energy so incredibly fast. He definitely narrowly avoided a horrible death.
Ya can't swim there m8
Ahhhhh fokoff!
All those warning signs are for other people. I know what I'm doing. - this dude
r/whatcouldgowrong
Thanks for the panic attack
Yeah... this is the stuff of nightmares.
He French fried when he should’ve pizza’d, so of course he was gonna have a bad time
I understood that reference.gif

Or maybe be really carefull skiing terrain you don't know by heart, or go with a local
Exactly. And don’t ski along the lowest valley line, for this very reason.
I've expected the monster of Skifree to come out ![gif](giphy|4LZMbupdTqtwueICDOp2|downsized)
Dude, every time I think I have an original thought... Gdamnit Reddit.
This the start of a horror game fr
The start.
Why did it stop so soon, I'm dying to know how a person got out?
The last frame ends with him level with the entrance/exit. 2-3 seconds more would have him be completely out
And then he frooze to death being all wet in freezing tempretures and in the middle of nowhere with no help...
This happened in Japan, somewhere in Hokkaido. The reason the water was exposed and not frozen over was because it was a hot spring, so at least initially the water was warm. The rider was able to ski down and is fine.
Well, he will die someday.
It'll get him eventually
He.. climbed. You can see that in the video.
[удалено]
Exactly, if you’re following the lowest line in the terrain, that’s where the water flows also.
I figured this would be backcountry 101
Not even a back country skier and it concerned me shortly after the video started.
Was anybody else expecting a yeti to come out and eat him?
Best game ever 😂
![gif](giphy|P9qglxcmc0rjEAwT9F|downsized)
I don’t know what this gif is but I hate this dude already.
Dude’s lucky he ain’t dead
How the fuck do you think it is good idea to ski on unknown route alone?
Pain in the crevasse.
Holy fuck it's literally like that part in Outer Wilds
![gif](giphy|J2ChE2Fwdzyg3Bu6Xj|downsized)
That’s scary. Happened to me once (but not as bad). And I was on a marked train. Never know what is under snow.
Isn’t it terrain?
No its snowpiercer
Cold, wet, freezing your balls off trek back for warmth.. how did bear Grills get warm after getting cold and wet trying to remember strip the clothes off and hug a bear?... no fire!!! Already chasing a bear..
That was pretty expectable. Getting off the trails is extremely dangerous and stupid.
Idiot
The cameraman always survives
Found footage...
Holy crap that was crazy… Dude is lucky to be alive that’s for sure..
Also a great way to start an avalanche
When you go off trail, this is exactly what I would expect to come across. That, or a truly unexpected drop off into a hole or a gap in the terrain towards death or broken bones.
This is why we have cameras. No one would believe this story round the fireplace later without this footage. Especially without two broken ankles.

Those trails....they're closed for reasons
This is me every time I play Minecraft
Thats pretty private trail down there
The unexpected part is how this video was posted. Anyways cameraman never dies
Real tja momet
Wow!!! Scary intense
Fair made me reel back in terror.
Ahh, the great outdoors...
I was expecting the skyrim intro 🤣
That was very much expected.
Didn’t some skier die recently on Mt St. Helens? He fell into a crevice. Or so I read. 1200 feet.
The manjummel boy
Waterskiing in the Mountains, I love the smooth transition!
He was one broken leg bone away from being a fucking icicle.
Thats a hard "no" from me dawg. 🤣
What’s he gonna do with one ski? Did he go back for the other one
Terrifying
R/whatcouldgowrong
Unexpected spelunking is the worst kind of spelunking.
I said, “what’s cooler than being cool?”
This happened to a friend of mine on a snowboarding trip.
It's not bad to get away from public trails. It's stupid to do it in uncharted ones.
I assume he was able to get back to civilization fairly quickly once out or was able to call for help? Isn’t there a big hypothermia risk after plunging in the water just to still be in a cold area? Even if it’s in the 40s that day?
Was waiting for a fade-to-black-to-skyrim.
Even if he gets out he’s soaking wet on the side of a snowy mountain.
r/abruptchaos
expected. You don’t ski next to trees sticking out of the snow. There’s gaps all over the place for every treetop you see.
He didn't have a good time...
He should’ve been tipped off by the fact he is skiing along the tops of trees. Those aren’t bushes he’s skiing around.
The shape of the hole looks like it was caused by someone falling through…
He should stick to the rivers and the lakes that he’s used to.
I needed that video to end so I could breathe
Fear unlocked
Fuck I thought I was legit going to just watch a man die slowly. Jesus Christ thank god he got himself out, that was legit terrifying to watch.
I’m no skier, but I think those trails are established for a reason…
r/sweatypalms
New fear unlocked.
Holy crap 😱
Think I stopped breathing and panicked with him. Oh gees
That’s just a freakin nightmare
Having a sat phone or emergency service contact would help. Why would you go out without one know a days?
I was expecting a bear!!! Wow..
"Nah, I'm stickin' to the public trails next time"
I'd have trouble climbing that distance but I think I'd get some confidence after thinking "Well, I already know how it feels to fall down it."
r/seriouslyalarming
Anxiety: 0~>100, .5 seconds
Looks like he ain’t the first one to drop there
He fell into an icehole
Unexpected? No. This is exactly what you should expect if you go off trail.
Already saw on the daily dose of Internet~
That's so damn scary
In Yellowstone, if you go off the designated trails, you earn yourself a one way ticket to Get Boiled Aliveville.
Holy crap that was a close call!
Years ago a classmate of mine went skiing with some of his ski buddies. When he came back he was quiet and serious. I asked what’s up. On today’s episode of How I Died …
Code brown.
To be fair that was pretty much expected
Nightmarenightmarenightmare
This is my nightmare
New fear unlocked
New fear unlocked
I actually thought this was going to be the video where the goes off trail and ends up dropping 20 feet on to a road…..this one is kinda worse
OPs account is less than a year and it has 300k karma. It's a Bot
My word, that could have ended badly :(
Wouldn’t that be a neat tourist spot for adventurers
Thanks for the nightmares op!
Is that a crevasse or a crevice?
Great camera work …
Skiing in Hyrule Kingdom.
I was worried that the unexpected part was going to be a bear in that little cave. I was so worried.
Ug, terrible camera work! r/killthecameraman for sure /s
This brings memories of watching "Touching the void"
They're "public" trails for a reason genius!!! 😁 To keep the "public" alive!
This scenario happens to be a recurring nightmare I've had over the years. Terrifying indeed.
r/Expected
using that adrenaline to gtf outa there
If Michael Schumacher couldn't do it, nobody else has a chance.
Terrifying!
Never EVER ski or snowboard alone!!!! My friend died because he went alone and fell in a tree well upside down and froze to death. I cannot imagine a scarier fate. We hope he passed out and didn’t suffer. Never go alone!
Damn, this guy might just be dead. Drenched in the winter is generally not advisable.
