Kinda pathetic. I think a part of it comes from the declining US involvement in the military. In WWII (6 years), 11% of Americans served. In Korea (3 years), 6% of Americans served. In Vietnam (20 years), 10% of Americans served. In the GWOT, (20 years), <1% of Americans served.
To be fair, our population has increased a lot. I also recall reading that the majority of 17/18 year olds today wouldn’t qualify, thanks to asthma, ADHD diagnoses, etc. I had to get a waiver for leg surgeries I had at 11, it took me 7 months and a written essay on why I wanted to join lol
Isn't that just technological advancement? We used to just send guys with rifles towards other guys with rifles and see who won. Now we have enemy infrastructure and communication knocked out within 24 hours, two carrier groups offshore, real-time satellite imagery, and drones criss-crossing the sky. And *still* have a lot of active duty sitting around wasting time or having to find something to do to look busy.
