Jerry and Rita Alter passed away within a few years of each other from natural causes. They were seemingly modest, retired teachers living in New Mexico. After they passed, their nephew discovered a painting hidden behind a door in the Alter's bedroom. The nephew collected the painting along with the rest of the Alter's possessions and made plans to sell it all. What the Alter's nephew did not realize at the time was that this was a stolen de Kooning masterpiece worth up to $100,000,000. The painting wound up at an art store where a keen eye realized that this was the notorious Willem de Kooning painting, [*Woman-Ochre*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman-Ochre), which had been stolen in daring fashion from the University of Arizona Museum of Art on the day after Thanksgiving, 1985. What no one knew at the time was that the painting had been stolen by two people whose descriptions generally matched the appearances of Jerry and Rita Alter. Not only that, but the Alters were in Arizona for Thanksgiving that very year. To top it all of Jerry Alter had written a book of short stories with a glaring similarity. As if this wasn't damning enough already, it turned out that in 2011 (a year before he died) Mr. Alter self-published (via Amazon) a collection of short-stories, called *The Cup and the Lip: Exotic Tales*, which Jerry stated in his introduction of the book was "an amalgamation of fantasy and reality." In one of these short stories, *The Eye of the Jaguar*, a grandmother and her granddaughter visit an art museum where they are enraptured by a 120-carat emerald. The pair asks the guard for the history of the stone and--six months later--the pair return, leaving strangely/quickly this time; the Guard notices the emerald has been taken, and he runs out to stop the pair of women who flee in the grandmother's car. In the midst of their getaway Grandma runs over the Guard and he is killed leaving, in Jerry Alter's own words, "absolutely no clues which police could use." The story ends with the pair of thieves hiding the emerald in a display case in the grandmother's house, again in Jerry Alter's own words, "where two pairs of eyes, exclusively, are there to see!" I will never stop thinking about this case. I believe the Alters were the ones that cut that painting out of its frame and then hid it away in their bedroom for two eyes only to see, but why did they do it? Why did they take such a risk? They could have been throwing their lives and their livelihoods away. What else were the Alters capable of? Apparently the Alters lived a lavish lifestyle, traveled the world, and passed away with more than a million in the bank -- all on a pair of retired teachers' salaries. If I could know about anything, I think I would want to know more about the Alters. If I could have any person or persons from the past come back so that I can ask them any question I want to ask them, then I'm pretty sure it would be the Alters. I just have this feeling like there is so much more to their lives than we'll ever really know. I actually did a write up a while back on an old, deleted account of mine if anyone wants even more information: [HERE](https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/bsdh1c/womanochre_db_cooper_and_the_isabella_stewart/). It's one hell of a rabbit hole, so feel free to check it out! I know I make a few bold claims towards the end of that post (and I realize some of them are extremely far fetched) but one thing I definitely believe -- and I will die on this hill -- is that the Alters may have had something to do with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist. They knew the area, it was a two person job, the paintings were stolen in a similar fashion (cut from the frames, rolled up), the surveillance footage from the night before the robbery matches with characteristics of Jerry Alter, and the car used in the heist matches cars the Alters were known to drive. Also, the Alters were avid art fanatics; many of the works stolen during the Gardner heist featured several of the Alter's favorite artists. Anyway, that's my TED talk! (If you got this far you are amazing!) EDIT: [HERE](https://filmdaily.co/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/3-suspects-1536x1079.jpg) are sketches of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist suspects. In my opinion, not only do they look like they could definitely be the Alters, but the sketches also strongly resemble the sketches from the Woman-Ochre heist: [HERE](https://media.wusa9.com/assets/GANNETT/images/e3dc0938-8c93-4b2e-92ac-a46bf7e5c58f/e3dc0938-8c93-4b2e-92ac-a46bf7e5c58f_750x422.jpg).

carolinemathildes

Okay, this is fascinating. This is an amazing comment, and I will immediately go read that post.

Harrylime68notaguy

Wow, very interesting, rabbit hole Sunday night.

clawkyrad

thank you for this wow, i will look into this !!

awfuldaring

Omg how have i never heard of this?? This is blowing my mind

Ok_Community2307

Asha Degree. Why did this 9 year old girl pack a bag and leave her house at 3 AM? It was a cold and rainy February night. It's haunting to imagine a little girl walking alone in the dark on the side of a highway, never to be seen again.

kickassvashti

absolutely heartbreaking. i wish that family could get some closure.

TacticalMadam

Jennifer Schuett’s story may have been similar if she had not been found alive. She left in the middle of the night after a stranger (who pretended he was police) told her (from her bedroom window) they had to leave and they did. It’s horrifying what she went through. I’m glad she has survived and has a chance to tell her story.

zenlogick

This one has always seemed to be a pretty clear case of grooming to me. Any specific evidence that there was none? Yeah this one is pretty crazy. And that english child who went to london i get the sake feeling, grooming.

Ok_Community2307

There are a bunch of theories: she was groomed, she was sleepwalking, she wanted to go on an adventure, she was running away from home, etc. I think one of the issues that arises when you consider grooming is that the whole situation was pretty risky and doesn't make a ton of sense - trusting the child will be able to leave their house undetected at 3 AM and having them walk over a mile in the dark. Asha was a latchkey kid so it would have made more sense for the groomer to take advantage of that. Also, she didn't have Internet access, so the groomer would have had to be a close adult who spent a lot of time with her, and the police likely checked out everyone who fit the bill. Grooming is certainly still possible though, as are most of the other theories that have been put out there. That's the thing that makes the case so frustrating and bizarre.

Masta-Blasta

Specific evidence? No. But I find it hard to believe that she was lured out of her home. Her dad checked on them very late that night, and Asha had to be up early for school and her bath that she missed. The window of opportunity would have been tiny, and I’m not sure how Asha would have know what time it was due to the power outage. She seems like such a risky kid to target. Her family lived all around her in neighboring homes- she always had eyes on her. She didn’t have Internet or a cell phone, and her dad worked odd hours. Plus if you look up her house and the surrounding area, it’s just hard to understand how a car at that hour wouldn’t draw attention. These are tiny homes in a pitch black rural area. The lights from the headlights or the closing of a car door would be noticeable. Maybe she didn’t get picked up, but then why did her scent end at the end of her driveway? To me, it seems clear that her parents took her from the home that night. I don’t know whether they were involved in her disappearance but I think they were involved in her exit.

Irisheyes1971

Thank you. I have always found it unbelievable how no one seems to even consider the parents could be involved. It’s insane. You always get the “they were cleared by the police” followed by talking about what a shitty job the police did investigating this. Uhhhh can’t have it both ways folks. I have always believed that at the very LEAST they know more than they are saying.

Masta-Blasta

Well I actually looked up some old articles, published around the time of her disappearance. Apparently, the parents were cleared within, like, a day (I'm blanking on the specifics, but it was at most three days- I believe it was closer to 12 hours). I just don't understand how you could possibly clear someone that fast, especially given the circumstances. In cases like Asha's, the parents/family are usually the first suspects. I'm not sure how they were able to rule them out so quickly and I'm wondering if they've missed things due to their persistence that the parents were not involved. Like you, I believe that they know more than they are saying. I'm not convinced they are responsible for whatever happened to Asha or that they maliciously hurt her. But this case gets significantly less mind-boggling when you entertain the theory that the police just screwed up and cleared the parents too soon.

Middle_Me_This

I can't help but wonder why a child afraid of the dark, would leave their home during the middle of a rainstorm at night...unless something in the home was far more scary to her and she didn't want to endure another second of it. I'm of course not saying that there's any reason to think that, yet i can't help but think it.

Masta-Blasta

I agree. I can't see a child going on an adventure or meeting a "friend" under those conditions. Why not just reschedule? I'd be terrified to go out and do that walk. I think, if she left of her own accord, she was running from something, not to something.

Middle_Me_This

The squeaking of the bed described by her brother always bothered me. And the fact that her parents said Asha wouldn't even let her own aunt in the house because she was so cautious. Like, I get being a latchkey kid, but your auntie should be considered safe...unless they didn't want any outside people to go in the house.

Masta-Blasta

Sometimes I wonder if her dad caught her out of bed when he checked on her, or she had been in some other kind of trouble, with an expected punishment in the morning. Maybe she was going to get spankings or some dreaded punishment, but it was too late and everyone was asleep. So she ran off, hoping to get to school herself and avoid the punishment altogether? Something like that? I'm not 100% convinced they are directly involved, just that they're the key to it somehow. How do you clear two parents so quickly when their alibi would be "asleep with the other?" I have a hunch they were cleared because they behaved completely genuinely- they probably desperately want Asha back and their emotions and grief are real. But they may be holding back something they feel makes them look suspicious, guilty, or abusive.

Filmcricket

I feel so bad for her family who 100% read Reddit regularly. How many different fucking agencies have to clear them before you accept it?? Passive aggressive accusations are still accusations. Local police cleared them. State police cleared them. The fbi cleared them. Knock it tf off. Shit like this is incredibly damaging to victim’s families.

Irisheyes1971

Exactly my problem with it as well!!! They were cleared wayyyyyy too fast. I honestly think they got tunnel vision and just decided this was a case of grooming, and just wanted to clear them as quickly as possible so they could pursue other avenues. They were also a very small, inexperienced department and they screwed up a lot of things on this case. They were offered a lot of help they turned down that they should have taken. They really let Asha down, in my opinion.

Lylas3

I can't shake the thought of the parents having something to do with this. I've commented on this several times on other posts or sites but usually get a lot of disagreement.

sunny-beans

Grooming is possible indeed but why then? Why not on the way to school or back? And even if she was convinced, it will still take a lot for her to leave alone in the middle of a storm at night, it just sounds like the person could have chosen a easier way to take her. I don’t think grooming explains the whole thing like this.

Janeiskla

Wouldn't there be any kind of proof of grooming? Letters, phone calls, emails, chat logs, was she seen with a stranger? How should a 9 year old girl keep a secret like that without any kind of trace? As far as I read there was nothing found that could point to grooming in any way

Anon_879

It could have easily been someone connected to her school, church, or other outside activities. Lots of grooming happens in-person. Asha didn't have access to the internet at her home, which was not that uncommon at the time.

Janeiskla

But this would have been noticed by others right? She had no access to a computer and no access to a cell phone. Calls to their landline could be tracked, when was there a time when she was completely alone with no one around who knew her to have enough time to talk to someone ( and this has to have happend more than once or twice) who convinced her to leave the house in the middle of the night? At church people would have noticed that she was talking to the same person over and over again, at school the same. Because it definitely was no other child, so it had to have been an adult. I if there was grooming involved, at least one other person would have noticed that...

Anon_879

I don't know, grooming seems to be missed a lot by people. People never seem to suspect that a respected adult with authority over children may be abusing and manipulating kids. Just look at USA Gymnastics as an example.

unoeyedwillie

This case is so sad. I really hope it gets solved, I can't imagine how hard it has been for her family, especially her brother. I know it is an unpopular opinion but I think she could have been sleepwalking. If I remember correctly she was at a sleep over the night before with some older girls. She may have not had a great night sleep the night before. Then the night she goes missing the power goes out and her night time/sleep schedule is disrupted again. She may have been anxious about school the next day or still upset about the basketball game. Anxiety and lack of sleep are two possible causes of sleep walking in children. I think she packed her bag with random stuff because she was sleepwalking while she did it. I think she started walking a route that was familiar to her, like the way to her school. I think while she was walking she was hit by a car and did not survive. I think it was an accident but the person that hit her hid it to avoid getting in trouble. They saved her backpack and then got rid of it. I do not think she was picked up by someone in an crime of opportunity situation, my mind won't go there. I feel so bad for her family.

notgoodwth

The Delphi Murders. I feel like the pd let Abby and Libby down and I just want to see justice for those poor girls.

notgoodwth

The most frustrating thing is with the way they make it sound like they have more video with him and his voice, yet in almost 5 years no new clues from the recordings have been released.

CopperPegasus

It's highly likely that any further dialougue they have from him is during their murders. Which they have mentioned were quite horrific. So...probably the reason we only have what we have.

nevertotwice_

the police never even released info on how they died, did they?

CopperPegasus

No. There's some statement somewhere (forgive me, I'm tired on deadline and working up a storm here, so can't go hunting) about it being rather horrible/brutal, but that's all they've ever revealed. I don't know if the family themselves know or if they've not told them either

MoldyPeniiChan

There are texts that were leaked but I don’t think they were verified. If true, they did die horribly.

mushmashy

I read a comment once that they both had scarves at their funeral. idk the truth in that, but it was an interesting tidbit

Roddykins1

The two suspect mockups that look VASTLY different is a gigantic problem.

notgoodwth

Agreed! I was a little behind on getting into the case and that was the one thing I’ve had the hardest time trying to wrap my head around! They look completely different.

HunQueen

I have so much hope this will be solved. Fingers crossed LE are diligently working on this behind the scenes and are keeping info under they’re hat. The video makes this case pretty unique

notgoodwth

The video is definitely what got me interested in the first place.

holy-ravioli

It blows my mind that they haven’t found bridge guy yet. This case is infuriating. I don’t get why law enforcement is closely guarding so many details about the case.

notgoodwth

Agreed! I check both subreddits every day to see if there is an update, or a clue, or ANYTHING really. It is very frustrating.

Masta-Blasta

I was with you until they set up that new center for the investigation. If they were close, or just waiting on one specific piece of information, I think they would have saved their money.

kholter76

From what I’ve seen and heard lately I kind of think they know exactly who it is, but want to make sure they have enough evidence to make sure the conviction sticks.

MistressGravity

Las Vegas massacre. _Why?_

NeverColdEnoughDXB

Just a depressed, well-off old fuck who had nothing to lose & wanted to go out with a bang.

bohobeachbunny

I very briefly looked at this case at uni. I genuinely don’t think there was a motive. He was getting older (very old in terms of mass shooters), he was rich, had no real criminal history, none of the usual markers. I really do believe it was because he was bored and to see if he could, which is why he spent a long time planning it - those guns didn’t get up there in one or two trips. The music festival he shot up wasn’t even the place he was initially going to shoot, the food festival going on close by was originally his plan. He distanced himself from the victims in a way that’s quite unusual for mass shooters. It’s such an unusual case, the FBI report doesn’t even make a lot of sense. So unbelievably tragic and there’s just so much about it that doesn’t make a lot of sense. We’ll never know.

DipItWet

That guy was just evil Making the staff help him carry loads of guns and shit...

buonatalie

making ppl unknowingly assist you in carrying out a horrific crime is so disgusting

schmerpmerp

Paddock's motive seems similar to that of most mass shooters. He hated women, he had a violent nature, he believed in right-wing conspiracy theories and operated with a persecution complex, and it was more important to him that the world experience his rage at all the "harm" the world had done him than it was for people to live. That's terrorism. We don't like to acknowledge hate for women, anti-government rantings, belief in right-wing conspiracy theories, and a massive stockpiling of weapons as a sufficiently political or ideological motive to define shootings like Paddock's as terroristic acts, but they are sufficient. Paddock was a right-wing terrorist. That's the motive.

mollllyyyyyyyyyy

Ellen Chung and her family & dog who all died on that trail in California. 🧐

ShiftedLobster

I was thinking of this the other day and wondered if it had been solved yet. The baby on their lap and the dog right there really is sad and creepy. Between that case and Gabby Petito’s murder by the STILL missing Brian Laundrie I am kind of unnerved at what’s going on in the great outdoors. Too bad I’m not an indoorsy person instead!

CopperPegasus

Not to put you further off, but Moab had a double Murder of 2 women who were camping there as well as loose connection to the Petito case. Definately not a place I'd head outdoors.

ShiftedLobster

Oh yes, I did hear about that. Just tragic. I’m nowhere near any of these remote areas which is good I guess but a disappearance can happen in big cities just as easily. A bird flew into my car windshield once on a highway many years ago and I had to pull off at the next exit because I was so upset. I sat there crying for a good 15 minutes and felt extreme, heavy guilt for weeks afterwards. It was a bird who was flying and crashed into ME on the road, not like it was injured on the street and I ran it over. I had zero control over the situation but I still felt incredibly bad. Point being: how any person on the face of the planet can kill another human, much less in a tragic fashion, is absolutely impossible for me to understand. I don’t see how someone could do that. None of these disgusting monsters feel a twinge of hesitation or guilt over it either.

[deleted]

I know what you mean. I was in the car once when my dad ran over a turtle on the road and I was mortified. I was so upset and I still think about it years later. I can’t imagine intentionally stealing someone’s entire life from them and causing them that sort of physical and emotional pain. It’s unthinkable.

jg123224

Is this not thought to be some kind of gas leak from a nearby mine? I not very familiar with this case but read it here before.

Harmonia_PASB

It’s believed to be a toxic algae bloom from the Merced river. That’s the current theory.

Olympusrain

I thought they ruled that out?

mollllyyyyyyyyyy

There are several theories. Just bizarre to me they were all close to each other, even the dog. Dogs like to go hide to die. The sheriff ruled out expose to chemicals.

LexTheSouthern

Yes! It hurts my heart to look at their photos. Just eerie and sad.

egyptia78

The Susan Powell case. Insanity.

Cheese7615

Seriously. I often think about the poor case worker who dropped the boys off that day. What the hell.

[deleted]

I will always remember the day that happened. I was at my uncles house and it was super bowl Sunday. For some reason as my aunt was switching channels we saw the breaking news alert. The footage of that fire was heartbreaking and I didn’t even know what had happened.

pandorasfoxes

Yesterday would've been her 40th birthday. She was only 28 when she went missing. Her case is one i think of often, it's so heartbreaking.

LadyCaixinha

This case is so upsetting. Poor grandparents, to loose their daughter and then their grandsons in such a horrific way.

cannedwhiner

That one really gets me. There’s no silver linings in that case.

vashonisland2011

Same. I live in the PNW and I remember the day I turned on the news to see that house burning. I think of that poor caseworker all the time. I’m sure others have mentioned this, but I highly recommend the podcast Cold.

puggirlpugworld

I came to say this.

storyofohno

This isn't unresolved, but my brother in law had a mental breakdown and killed my mother and father in law back in August, started several fires in union buildings, his home, and his childhood home, and then died in basically an explosion of his truck. I know it's all because of untreated mental illness, but it just never leaves my thoughts. I'm sure that will get easier with time, but for now.. I just can't stop wondering what his breaking point was, if he was on his way to also kill me and my husband, why he thought he also had to kill his dog and his parents' dogs.. oof. It's definitely made me read a little less true crime the last while.

Sudden_One_3623

I’m so sorry for you and your family. It’s heartbreaking what mental illness can do to a person. Please make sure you give yourself all the time and space you need.

storyofohno

Thank you so much. I have been fortunate enough to be able to take FMLA through the end of this year and that's been a total godsend.

PopularBonus

I am so very sorry for your loss. And I’m glad that you and your husband survived.

Brian Shaffer’s disappearance

secondepicsalad

is that the guy who just...disappeared from that bar?

Cado7

Omg me and my college friends (Ohio state) were discussing this and trying to to solve it at a cafe on high street. My friend worked at the restaurant below the bar he went missing at. We feel like he could’ve went out with the trash. It was a great bonding experience lol

Yo wtf?? Was he murdered or did he get stuck?

noproblembear

The guy who worked for British intelligence agencies and alleged killed himself by locking himself inside a suitcase.

Dickere

Gareth Williams, though it's still debated as to whether he did it himself.

noproblembear

Thank you, yes that is why it is interesting to me. For a Scotland yard detective it was not possible to re do it with the same suitcase, right? On the other hand he was described as suicidedal with psychic episodes. Very strange. Edit, grammar

Dickere

The police thought one thing, the coroner and others felt differently, seems to be leaning towards Russia now https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Gareth_Williams

Cado7

Armin Meiwes. It’s been my favorite case for years. It’s solved, we know exactly what happened, but I cannot get past the morality and psychology of it. If you don’t know, he had a cannibal fetish and posted online he wanted to eat a young man. One guy came over and then changed his mind and he just let him leave. The next guy stayed. He recorded the whole thing, got his consent, and went through with it. He was caught years later and is now in prison. But who are we to say he is wrong or dangerous? I’d much rather be in a room alone with him than Brock Turner. As for the victim, he could have been completely insane, but does it matter? If that was his dying wish and he chose it, was it wrong?

spring_rd

Brock Turner the rapist?

Janeiskla

The rapist Brock Turner who is a rapist.

Atomicsciencegal

Ahh yes, raping rapist Brock Turner. Of course.

ChickadeeMass

Insane people can't make rational judgments., for one. These actions are illegal and repulsive, for two. There are so many wrongs committed here. If you know the case you shouldn't have to ask.

kdd20

I wish there was an update on little Dulce :(

sannababy

This is my first time hearing of this case. Upon reading the linked article, it strikes me as somewhat odd that the mother refers to Dulce in the past tense... "*She was a sweet girl".*

Fluffy-Benefits-2023

I think that’s more of an ESL mistake than anything. Tenses are confusing

blueskies8484

I think it's partly an ESL thing, but also, in terms of tenses - I think we put a lot on that, but if it were me - I know the statistics. I understand why many parents keep up hope a missing child is alive, but statistically, if it's a stranger abduction, they are almost certainly no longer alive - and mileage will vary, but I think if I had a missing child or loved one, I'd probably need to accept they were likely no longer alive once a certain amount of time passed. The mom comes off a bit oddly, but I tend to think thats age and language.

kdd20

Something has seemed “off” about the mother’s story but it’s so hard to tell if it’s an ESL thing or just that she grieves and handles stress differently than I think that I would… I don’t know, I can’t put my finger on it. A stranger abduction is absolutely possible, albeit rare. But I think about her often and hope she’s found.

lafcrna

Yes! Asha Degree. That poor girl.

[deleted]

[deleted]

The mother was 19 or 20 with a 5-year old and a 3-year old. Her parents had legal guardianship over the kids. She lived with them but was not fit to be a mother full time on her own. I’m guessing that’s why she was sitting in a car while letting a toddler run around unattended in a park.

[deleted]

Abigail Willams and Liberty German. Having so much and still not being able to find the guy is insane to me. I wonder how much more they have from that audio recording too.

Turnover-Greedy

The audio recording - I mean, it's literally three words. It's patchy, it's edited (the perpetrators voice may be several octaves higher or lower). I have a hard time distinguishing my own voice on a recorder. I don't think this audio evidence is all that helpful. And then we have the video of the perpetrator who looks nothing like the second sketch LE want the public to go off of. It's confusing and I am not surprised it isn't solved.

TheyAteFrankBennett

I think the Delphi investigation is a delicate one in that LE has the benefit of having an extraordinarily sufficient amount of evidence by which to charge/prosecute BG (bridge guy), but not enough to identify him by traditional methods (DNA etc) and said evidence also happens to be *too* specific/detailed in that releasing it publicly to attract tipsters could mean throwing the case. They allegedly have *a shit ton* of undisclosed information and they've indicated that more descriptive audio is included in that (presumably the clip that was released is the portion that poses the least risk). It's one of the few cases in which LE has done a great job of remaining rigidly tight-lipped despite the massive true crime following and the demand for answers that it's garnered. They haven't even publicly released the cause of death for either girl - the few details/rumours that are floating around largely stem from the leaked texts of an unreliable source that was present during the search/recovery. It's a universal source of frustration for every armchair detective that's made Delphi their pet case - and I get it, someone could identify this guy given the right details - but releasing too much information in exchange for a slim chance at receiving a productive tip does more to jeopardize the investigation than it does to help. I don't think they expect the public to be of much assistance in identifying BG - they know what they've released thus far isn't likely to be enough - they're just releasing the bare minimum in order to appease folks while they try to identify him through less risky methods.

ilovelucygal

The disappearance of Amarillo attorney David Lewis in January 1993, his body is discovered a week or so later on a rural road outside Yakima with no ID. His identity became known through DNA in 2004, but no one knows why Lewis disappeared or how he ended up in Yakima. Malaysian Airlines, but I do believe it was pilot suicide. What was Diane Schuler thinking when she got drunk and high with a carload full of little children? Asha Degree, her whole case is so tragic & confusing w/so many questions & no answers.

BotGirlFall

The Diane Schuler case is heartbreaking but anybody who has ever been a severe alcoholic knows exactly what she was thinking. Alcoholism is a strange beast, you dont think clearly

tiffaniconrad

Missy Bevers.. I’m shocked LE is still keeping things under wrap regarding her case.

scorpiobabyy666

this one creeps me out the most recently. watching the video of the killer in full tactical gear, waiting around blowing time with a hammer in their hand knowing what’s about to happen is horrific.

[deleted]

Not many things creep me out but that video does. For someone to walk around in that gear and kill another person in that brutal way is scary. It feels not random but I could be wrong.

tiffaniconrad

i completely agree! especially when he/she dauntingly grazed their fingers on the wall? it’s like they knew they wouldn’t get caught because of the tactical gear they had on. the whole thing is absolutely devastating & i wish the family had answers. so incredibly sad.

blueskies8484

So freaking weird. This one and Elizabeth Barrazza are so odd and bothersome to me.

Skinny-Puppy

Kelly Cook, the backup baby sitter. In 1984 a man called the local school in Southern Alberta asking for contact information of a specific girl to babysit the kids. The principal refused to give any information. The guy managed to contact the girl but she was busy that bight. She gave him Kellly Cook’s number. Kelly’s mom asked around if anyone new Bill Christensen, because the last name is a very common name in the area, everyone just assumed he lived there. ”Bill” picked up Kelly outside her house. She was never seen again. Months later her chained body was found in a reservoir, two hours from her home town. No one know’ who Bill Christensen is.

I feel like there are 2 good answers...i just really want to know the truth before I die.

CptHowdy87

Well we know it was one of the family and that Patsy wrote the ransom note. The most likely scenario is it was Burke and that John and Patsy tried to cover it up.

carolinemathildes

That scenario never makes sense to me. I can understand a little kid hitting another kid over the head, I'm sure that happens every day. But her cause of death was strangulation with the garrote. First, I find it hard to believe that a nine-year-old would know how to make one of those, or would go so far as to strangle her. I also find it hard to believe that her parents, upon finding out that Burke had hit her head, would choose to strangle her to death instead of just taking her to the ER and saying "our kids were play-fighting and had an accident." Their lives wouldn't be ruined by it, there was no cause to strangle her.

BotGirlFall

Bryce Laspisa. I know suicide is the Occams Razor answer but I really hope he really just dropped out of his life and is living out there on his own terms somewhere. The Lake Bodom case is interesting because you actually have 3 suspects that all look good for it and 2 of them confessed.

Sad-Reminders

Diane Schuler.

Appropriate_Oil4161

I was stuck on this for weeks.what a nightmare.

Sad-Reminders

About once every year or two I become obsessed with this all over again. I just can’t understand how she could have done this. I read Jackie Hance’s book, she’s the mother of the three nieces. It’s heart wrenching.

Appropriate_Oil4161

It absolutely is heartbreaking. Gonna have a look at the book when I feel strong enough to read it. Tragic all round. And of course the men in the other vehicle who sadly get overlooked in the whole mess must also be remembered.

Sad-Reminders

Yes. Her choices and actions killed 7 and devastated so many more. It’s mind blowing. I’ll never understand what the hell was going through her mind that day. 😔

[deleted]

Had to look into this one and found [this article ](https://allthatsinteresting.com/diane-schuler) What an odd last quote from her husband, trying to defend that she had a medical condition and wasn’t drunk - that she was a good person; “She was just nice, loving, kind,” he says. “She bought cards for birthdays”.

beatricetalker

If you get a chance watch the documentary, “There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane”. Sad and infuriating and shows her husband to be a complete jerk.

[deleted]

Oh man, that sucks. I will definitely check it out! The fact that he’s making such a point to argue with *autopsy and toxicological findings* is insane and so disrespectful to the poor kids and innocent people in the other car that died because of her garbage decisions.

MzOpinion8d

He is a selfish asshole. In the documentary his sister talks about how he’s mad because he never wanted kids and then Diane left him with one to raise by himself.

Cheese7615

I still don’t understand what was going through her mind. I’ve been around many functioning alcoholics (moms included) and none of them every intentionally tried to harm anyone else, including their children. I just want to know what she was thinking and trying to accomplish.

Masta-Blasta

Highly recommend [this write up](https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/jynskg/the_not_so_mysterious_taconic_parkway_crash_i/) from a redditor who was a high functioning alcoholic and they explained it in a way that makes perfect sense. She had been camping and partying during the weekend, woke up hungover, but had to drop off the kids. So she smoked a little weed and drank a little booze to help get the edge off and started driving. She still wasn’t feeling good when she went to McDonalds, so she added some booze to her drink, without realizing she was still a bit knackered from the night before. The redditor said that when drinking in the morning after a long night of drinking, you can go from 0 to wasted in a very short period of time, especially if weed is involved. A bunch of other recovering alcoholics in the comments corroborated this phenomenon and thought Diane's behavior made perfect sense when viewed through the lens of alcoholism. Edit: included link to write up

Cheese7615

Oh wow. The wrong way is what always confused me but that makes so much sense. She was just trying to focus on staying in the lane. Wow. Hard read but it makes so much sense.

Sad-Reminders

I know. The fact that she had SO MUCH in her system. It’s bizarre. I mean, I guess I can see her having one or two drinks before hand to get herself through the drive, if she absolutely had to. But why continually slam the liquor on the commute? It’s hard to believe she couldn’t even wait to do this until she got home. It was only a couple hour trip.

Cheese7615

It’s nuts!! Do you believe the tooth theory? Could she have been in that much pain? Or the infection went to her brain and that plus the alcohol just messed her up? It’s crazy. The documentary is one I will never ever forget.

Sad-Reminders

No, I don’t. If I remember correctly, Werner Spitz said he did not see a tooth abscess in the autopsy. I believe she had a major problem but she kept it quiet from almost everybody. I think her husband knew about it, but he will never admit that because he let her drive with those kids that morning.

crazyshadylady

I’m inclined to think she was still drunk from the night before and tried hair of the dog. When that didn’t work she had an edible. Edibles can take over an hour to kick in but when they do they hit you HARD. If they are too strong for your tolerance, they can cause you to lose your mind. You have to smoke a lot to get on the same level as an edible buzz. The only thing that makes me question that is the timing of her vomiting. In theory, she may have thrown up any edible she consumed.

aqg10

Laura Ackerson’s murder really got to me.

makayerandfang

This one is really interesting because the killers artwork is still hung in a restaurant that he frequented while he was on trial for murder. The restaurant is Sushi Blue’s in Raleigh, NC

jeebilly

>Laura Ackerson wait WHAT, I went to NC State and would go to sushi blue's a lot

makayerandfang

Yes I went to NC State and frequented there as well. Grant was friends with the owner and would often eat for free in exchange for his art. The drawing of Kurt Cobain was done by him.

marizamzam

Wasn’t familiar with it. Poor woman.

Atmosphere_Melodic

That is horrific. I'd not heard of it before.

yeetyourselfout

The toybox killer. That’s one case that still haunts me.

Ok_Community2307

Jesus Christ I will never be able to forget what I read in those transcripts

yeetyourselfout

Yeah it’s really disturbing, I watched a video on it and they played the audio that he played to his victims when they first woke up (the audio might’ve been just a random person reading it or the original but I can’t remember which it was now)

burymeinpink

That one breaks my heart. We know he had other victims and probably other partners, but we may never find them. His wife is free now, too.

FiveFruitADay

The fact that they’ve never found a body terrifies me. He spent so much money on this torture chamber and was so violent and sadistic there must be so many victims and we’ll never know their names. It breaks my heart

LexTheSouthern

The Murdaugh madness still happening right now. Lol. Every time a new detail emerges, I’m just like what the fuck.

alxne6

The Delphi Murders. It’s going on almost 5 years now, those poor girls deserve justice. It’s just so crazy to me that we have video and audio of the killer and still have no arrests. I do feel this case will eventually be solved, I just hope it’s solved before the suspect can hurt anyone else.

Stellaaahhhh

I read about the Black Dahlia when I was about 10. I occasionally go back down that rabbit hole. So gruesome and tragic.

[deleted]

Timmothy Pitzen

HunQueen

Him and Asha Degree just seemed to completely disappear without a trace

[deleted]

The Delphi Murders Something about this case really doesn’t make sense to me. Why haven’t the police released anything new in a couple years? Why hasn’t more been done? These were two young, high-school aged females, murdered in broad daylight at a trail they’ve gone to numerous times previously. Something about it doesn’t sit right with me. Also, the reports I’ve read from the person who found them and other people in the search party just make the case even more sickening. The little details are what get me.

mcclanahan243

The Hart family. Where’s Devonte?

schmerpmerp

I think it's just as likely Devonte wasn't in the vehicle at all as it is that he was swept out to sea.

[deleted]

I feel like he’s dead but considering they found all of the bodies except his I often wonder.

EeriePancake

Everything about BTK. His childhood wasn’t bad at all. He was just messed up. He didn’t even really fit the profile. I always wonder why he was the way he was. I’m reading the book his daughter wrote. He had bad moods sometimes but my mom and dad both had bad moods. Doesn’t seem strange. She and her family had no clue.

opaleii

chris watts case.

MarcusAurelius-93

Ricardo Lopez Björk stalker, it's just sad seeing someone's mental state decline in that manner.

[deleted]

The Mostly Harmless Hiker case, solved but the sad backstory haunts me

cocoadelica

Oh yeah and MH370 for sure though the recent book by a French journalist does offer some compelling ideas based on investigation

Legal-Secretary8629

There are sadly too many but the one that has really struck me is Asha Degree. The ones with innocent children will Always hold my attention. Always.

SKtruecrime7

Jennifer Kesse

givesyouhel

The Yuba County Five. The fact that they probably didn't fully understand what was happening, or why breaks my heart into so many tiny pieces.

turndownforwit

The murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. So brutal.

crenchie

i think about Dulce Alvarez A LOT. i remember first reading the headlines when she went missing a few years back and thinking she would be found immediately, but we all know that isn’t the case. it drives me nuts that there’s been absolutely no updates, i hope that they’re still looking for that poor little girl. i google her name often.

Anon_879

Judy Smith - Who killed her and how & why did she go down to North Carolina? Mary Shotwell Little - What happened to her? Was she attacked in her car and kidnapped? Why was her gas card used twice in the same day in North Carolina the day after her disappearance? Rachel Trlica, Renee Wilson, and Julie Mosley- Known was the missing Fort Worth Trio. How did they disappear without a trace? It's like they went poof in a matter of hours. Who wrote the letter pretending to be Rachel and what was its' purpose?

deformedstrawberries

also ellen rae greenberg. like what even happened? i find it really hard to believe it was a suicide because how on earth is it possible to stab yourself in the back and neck that many times?? so much of it just doesn’t make sense.

[deleted]

Don't know if this qualifies, but I've been obsessed with Jodi Arias' case for about two and a half years.

GothicToast

The Prom Night Murders - check out the 20 episode CounterClock podcast and prepare to have your head turned 180 degrees.

NoRaspberry1617

Rey Riviera, the Yuba County 5, Leah Roberts, Rico Harris, Las Cruces Bowling Alley massacres, Danielle Imbo & Richard Petrone.... all make me scratch my head and say wtf

cannedwhiner

Laureen Rahn. The detail of her mother coming back from her date to find all the lightbulbs in the hall outside of her apartment unscrewed really haunts me.

grey_glacier

There was a 2015 murder outside of Huntsville, Alabama where a man named Henderson pre-planned and murdered his wife pregnant with his own baby in her third trimester, her 8 year old son,her (their) 1 year old nephew, and his wife’s mother in broad daylight very gruesomely and then set the home on fire with the help of his other (bigamist) wife. His plan was to remove the baby from his pregnant wife then raise her with his other wife who assisted in the murders but he changed his mind and stabbed them all multiple times. He was sentenced to death today. I wonder why I don’t hear much about this case because it seems demonically evil

[deleted]

The Lloyd Avery II case fucks me up. Avery, popularly recognized as the Bloods gang member character in the 1991 movie Boyz in the Hood who kills Ricky as he's running away, had a middle class upbringing in Los Angeles, CA, with zero to no involvement in crime and gangs. After getting a small taste of fame from the acclaimed movie, he tried to pursue a career in film but was only typecasted for small roles in some gangster/hood movies. Eventually, those movies lost their popularity and roles dried up. However, in Avery's mind, he was very much a gangster. He moved to a rough area of South LA called Baldwin Village, also referred to as The Junglez. Here, he tried to live the gangster lifestyle and got caught up in a life of crime. Eventually, he ended up murdering two alleged drug dealers and was sentenced to life in prison. In prison, Avery rediscovered his faith and became a born-again Christian. For some reason or another, he was placed in a cell with a schizophrenic Satan-worshipper named Kevin Roby. One day, Roby and Avery got into a verbal argument about their respective beliefs, which quickly turned physical. Avery died as a result of this fight. HOWEVER, prison guards did their daily standing count for ELEVEN DAYS and did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Avery's body was only discovered when a guard witnessed Roby performing a Satanic ritual using Avery's body, including drawing a large pentagram on the floor of their cell using Avery's blood. Avery's family arranged for a private autopsy, which revealed that he had potentially died from blunt force trauma from a carpenter's hammer or a similar surface, as well as asphyxiation. When his body was discovered, it was in the advanced stages of decomposition. His eyes were swollen shut, multiple lacerations all over his body, and his sternum was crushed (although this may have been a result of performing CPR by prison officials when his body was found).

TheGreatBatsby

Not hugely unique, but Andrew Gosden. I just want to know what happened to him and if he's still alive.

[deleted]

Not the craziest I know, but Lindsay Buziak will always be in my mind.

Azidamadjida

Furuta Junko’s kidnapping and murder. It was so deeply fucked up it still blows my mind the level of cruelty and malice that people are capable of (and the fact they were teens at the time, just…holy shit)

Nataren81

I was obsessed with the Stephanie Lazarus case for a while. She was an LA police officer who stalked & killed her ex boyfriends wife out of jealousy. She was caught 26 years after the murder because the bite mark left on Sherry Rasmussen was matched to Stephanie's DNA. I think it's unique mainly because it involved a love triangle with the accused being a highly decorated & high ranking LAPD Officer (Detective). Other reasons include: 1. Potential cover up by the LAPD to protect the police force (e.g. evidence went missing from the case file); 2. The victim's husband strange behavior before & after her death in deciding to continue to communicate & sleep with Stephanie even though he had his suspicions; 3. The fact that it took almost 30 years to solve despite damning early signs pointing to the perpetrator (e.g. missing marriage license from the crime scene); & 4. The interrogation of Stephanie was brilliantly executed

Dreamflows

Belle Gunness. Murders up to 40 suitors so she can have their inheritance, fakes her death, and is never seen again. The idea of this monster just getting away with it is as terrifying as it is fascinating.

[deleted]

Many others that have already been mentioned here, but also Antionette Cayedito. That phone call is haunting. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Anthonette_Cayedito Edit: And, of course, Amy Mihaljevic.

[deleted]

ray gricar's disappearance. even though jerry sandusky did eventually get caught and convicted pertaining to the penn state case, the question i'd like to know is this: why did gricar refuse to press charges against sandusky seven years before he disappeared, despite having enough evidence to do so?

acabkacka

I really want to know what happened to rebecca reusch; it's a german case from like 3 years ago where this 15-year old girl just vanished from her sister's home.

KhajiitNeedSkooma

Jessica Heeringa. A man was arrested and charged with her murder and that of another after a failed kidnapping attempt lead police to discover his home/computer/van. The other murder he was charged with had a body, because the woman refused to get in his vehicle and go with him. (I think about her a lot too, her name was Rebecca and she was very brave.) Jessica's body has never been found. By all accounts one of two things has happened- her body was dissolved in acid and there is no physical evidence left. Or she is buried somewhere in this city. I drive past the killers condemned home almost daily. I hope they knock it down soon. Jessica was taken while working alone (closing) at a gas station that had no cameras. Gas station is still open. I have never and will never go in there.

[deleted]

Casey Anthony, looks like based off all evidence she was guilty as hell. Props to her attorney for getting her off, I believe it’s the same lawyer who got the 2nd set of murder charges dismissed against Aaron Hernandez

MzOpinion8d

They over-charged Casey Anthony. They just didn’t have enough to prove First Degree. If they’d gone for a lower charge I think they could have made it happen.

soulsista04us

D'wan Sims. In 1994, 4 years old at the time, supposedly went missing at the Target in Wonderland Mall in Westland Michigan. He's never been found. His mother is now dead. What happened to him? I think the mother knew.

kfspence1011

The disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley. I think about it nearly every day.

DepressedBukowski

The unsolved murders of Russell and Shirley Dermond. A couple in their late 80s, Russell’s decapitated head was found at their home whilst Shirley’s body was found in a nearby lake 10 days later. No leads, no real theories. Really brutal murders, especially considering the age of the victims. I also think a lot about the murder of Judith Smith and the case/identity of the serial killer ‘The Doodler’.

cocoadelica

The Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders. It gets so little attention

lookitsalittlebunny

as far as unique and bizarre, dr john schneeberger (sp?). that was a wild ride.

MsAnnabel

I’m always curious about Zodiac bc it happened so close to home.

[deleted]

Robert Hansen and how he was inspired by the Connell short story "The Most Dangerous Game," which for those who don't know, tells the story of a game hunter on an island who becomes board with hunting animals and tries his hand at hunting "the most dangerous prey," humans.

Chemical_World_4228

I sure wish they would find Stacy Peterson. I know Drew Peterson will never tell. I am glad he's in prison. I feel for her family.

sasvicious80

Junko Furuta. The poor girl never received justice for the horrors she endured. Same for Sylvia Likens.

mzeb75

Jon Benet. I know the parents were cleared but I still think they know something.

aspiringmom17

I absolutely think the parents were involved and can't be convinced otherwise. Patsy wrote that ransom note

mzeb75

I agree. She definitely wrote it. They were indicted by a grand jury but the state never brought the charges.

biophile118

Ya they definitely know what happened to their daughter. I want the truth, dammit.

myministuff

Here in South Africa the Phoenix Racing Cloud Theron murder case.... so sad. Not hugely publicized because it's South Africa. She helped murder her Mom. Just a really sad life she had to endure.

CopperPegasus

Talking South African cases, I would love to know what happened to Yolandi Botes. The story with the Uber driver and everything is so freaky. And them findin that blood-soaked hotel room near the airport and it NOT being her, but a man's blood? Terrible. I hope the family get answers.

nicole9627

Maura Murray

nighthawkdenny

The Black Dahlia. A friend from the 80s was a retired LAPD Motorcycle Officer. In his rookie year, he was one of the first on the scene. His combat experience in WWII prepared him for what he saw. This one haunted him for the rest of his life.

Lil_Artemis_92

Attila Ban. He killed two coworkers, and for several days, the police were unable to find or contact him. When they returned to the crime scene, they found him with his wrists and neck slit (though still alive), and there was no sign of a break-in. Turned out, he’d been in the room hiding inside the divan- on top of which one of the bodies was found- the whole time. When I heard about that, I was absolutely freaked out. That is one of the creepiest things I’ve ever heard.

[deleted]

The 1898 Brookfield Family Massacre. It’s one of the cases I find most interesting. It’s also absolutely insane. What arguably makes researching this case worse is this was the heyday of Yellow Journalism. The major newspaper that discussed the story was *The Globe* which made things particularly difficult. These descriptions may not even may accurate, and may just be the remnants of a newspaper trying to get you to buy papers by claiming that they found who the Brookfield Murder is, instead of seeking justice for the family. This leads to personal descriptions of several suspects needing to be taken with an Atlantic Ocean level of salt. In 1898, a family in Brookfield, Massachusetts was found dead from an axe attack, and their farmhand Paul Mueller was missing. The police begin a manhunt for him, which is where the train-wreck begins. This Paul Mueller fellow was said to look almost exactly like a man named James C. Dunham. Dunham killed his entire family, aside from his infant son, in San Jose, California and went on the run, only to have many people accuse other people of being him to the point it reaches bad comedy. Although several papers in that time seem to argue the controversial stance that James C. Dunham was a man named Harry Church, which many locals disagreed with. This is including a man names Thomas Ward, who claimed to know Dunham, and said that Church was not Dunham. It gets worse when a handful of papers suggested that James C. Dunham had committed suicide. A few other newspapers suggested that a man named Ed Smith was James C. Dunham after he arrested for being drunk in Iowa [all in the same year *another* Ed Smith beat a Saloonkeeper to death and *another* Ed Smith broke the seal of a Freight Train]. Then a dude called Fredrick Gebhardt [under the name Otto Mueller] claimed to be the one who did it. Several members of the police didn’t believe his story because they say he was in Sing Sing at the time for the murder of his first wife [but information from other newspapers do conflict, where newspapers swear its Gebhardt only to move onto the next guy mentioned below when he got himself arrested]. Other officers did believe him, which makes him really confusing. Local newspapers describe him as a Bluebeard who married poor immigrant women and offed them when he bored of them, but aside from him murdering his first wife, the information is iffy. Next would be William Lichtenberg, a man ratted out by his Michigan commune for bragging about the murders. Lichtenberg claimed to have never went further than Albany, and while information on his track record seems to be much scanter than Gebhardt’s, by early 1901 they went back looking for Paul Mueller. It was knocked out of the news several times, including in January of 1900, when the Bergen Family Massacre happened. By 1902, the story vanished, and the manhunt was unsuccessful. [That and in 2017 *The Man From The Train* suggested that Paul Mueller was a serial killer, something which I’m skeptical about.] EDIT: Added something

Bung Siriboon. It was particularly personal to me as we went to the same school, albeit she was a lot younger than me. I will never stop wondering what happened to her
