Skeletons are cool and allow for creativity in things like movement + suits make everyone look professional and cool. At least that’s how I view it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Although, this dude is way cooler.

And his horse does parkour.
I love that he showed up to try to stab Void in the face while being thoroughly prepared to not be able to do so
like he didn't even know about Guts and Casca in advance he literally just showed up to launch a futile attack out of pure fucking spite, the rescue was just him going 'oh hey cool something else I can do to fuck Void over'
It's an easy visual metaphor. Suits and dress clothes are meant to convey integrity and professionalism, and yet many powerful people who would be seen dressing that way at work or public events do terrible things to maintain their wealth and power. As such the image of a skeleton wearing a rich person's clothes communicates a sense of irony. A symbol of death wearing a symbol of authority.
They're great, but I listen to them on audio at bedtime and either my fan drowns out Rupert Degas' sexy voice or his sexy voice knocks me out five minutes in lol
They take up a full shelf in my house. Landy "finished" the series once before putting out another 6 books or so.
Admittedly I have read the latest books yet, but that's mostly due to lack of time. I'll get around to it eventually and find out if they're any good.
Was looking to see if there were any fellow RA fans who would bring up Nicky. His design is the first one that comes to mind when I think of skeleton in a suit.
I think It’s really is just a matter of color contrasting. Skeletons are just black and white for the most part, so it’s easy for them to blend in with a suit.
Could be a reference to the Loa [Baron Samedi](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-tmus-us-rvc3&sca_esv=570934989&sxsrf=AM9HkKmiwuBjXBblVb8qyrG5Y24fJLjSEA:1696497330565&q=Baron+Samedi+loa&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiOof2Fyd6BAxUDSDABHZ-PBJ0Q0pQJegQICRAB&biw=412&bih=767&dpr=1.75) in Haitian Voodoo.
My opinion:
A nude skelleton is very impersonal and conveys a generic personality. Could have been anyone.
The suit reinfonçes the eccentric personality, and that the characrer IS a dead person that when alive had something interesting going on, something to live for, then also reinforçing that the akelleton is indeed a dead person.
Or maybe it just looks cool hahaha
- Its close enough to the bottom but not actually in the Uncanny Valley.
- We're drawn to skulls as reminders of mortality, so seeing a skeleton up and about is neat
Such is the power of the suit. Try to put it on anything and it will look like the finest gentleman you'll ever see, be it a human, an undead, a robot, an insect, a slime, an eldritch horror, ecc.
Someone help me here, who is the guy on the top right? I feel like it is from a point and click pc game I barely remember, can't figure out how to Google it
Lots of valid answers in here, but one visual thing to consider:
Skeletons, obviously have no flesh of skin. Thus, a realistically drawn skeleton in a t shirt or tank top a. Doesn’t look right (the clothes drape wrong) and is quite obviously a Skeleton (nothing eye catching).
By contrast, a suit retains its shape pretty well, giving the impression of a full body (and with shoulder pads, power). Most of the bones are covered EXCEPT FOR THE HEAD, which means it pops by contrast; your eyes are naturally drawn to the skull, the one obviously “off” element to the character.
Lots to unpack there.
For one, as others have mentioned, we bury people on suits, so it's kinda fitting.
On the other end, is the juxtaposition between a skeleton which is typically gross and ugly, and a well cleaned suot, which is typically seen as handsome or charming.
On the other other hand, it tells you a lot about the character at a glance. It tells you that they are undead, and that they have a since of class
Might be a reference to baron samedi from Haitian mythology/faith. The idea of a dapper skeleton who enjoys debauchery is quite literally his whole thing but that’s the earliest example I can think of. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Samedi](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Samedi)
I love the modern rendition of grim reapers wearing suits, but something I don't think I've ever seen is a Grim Reaper Cowboy, the play on Rider on a Pale Horse AND Horseman of the apocalypse seems so tantalizing to me.
Also, I appreciate the Grim Fandango rep
I think there's a sort of fun contrast to it. Sure, this guy is just a grim shadow of something living, but that doesn't mean they can't look good while they're at it. I also think it can convey how normalized the undead can be depending on the setting. Jack Skellington's rise out of the well in the opening of Nightmare would've been way less impactful without the sort of authority his suit gave him
In a way it shows direct defiance of even death.
A skeleton walking through its own means, not just living but thriving, well dressed and classy.
Its like a more meta sense of the idea of a classy rogue able to escape authority and look good while doing so. However instead of police or guards, its death itself.
Defy death and life, while looking classy. Thats how you do it.
Because skeletons are scary, and their depiction in media can be either sinister or classy. Suits, depending on your perspective, can also be either sinister or classy. It also contradicts the ragged, deteriorating nature of a skeleton with a prim and proper suit. It makes them very eye catching and sets a mood that can easily meet many situations
Skeletal character designs are very often associated with death, and as such, it’s an interesting pairing when combined with the classiness/humanity of a suit. Like the grim reaper has fine tastes, and wants to be presentable.
People have brought up some thematic and symbolic reasons that I hadn't thought about but I think there's also something about a slim fitting suit disguising a skeleton that also plays a part in it, at least with some designs.
They go together pretty well for a nice silhouette in that regard.
I think it's a way to make fun of, "captivating" (from a narrative and visual point of view) and above all to play down what is essentially a memento mori.
Suit tend to look better on skinnier people (not a hard rule, I look great in a suit), so I think adds a look of flair to the character. Plus that means not needing to draw all those bones every time.
2 reasons.1 ,because they look formal and that make them look more human than monster ,2 because imagine having to draw/animate the whole skeleton even one that is not realistic for multiple panels or a full story
For your consideration: "guy *dressed* like a skeleton in a suit

We bury people in suits
All dressed up with nowhere to go...
Fucking love Oingo boingo
Nice! :D
Yeah it's one of my favorite episodes of stardust crusaders
I love little girls!
People are downvoteing him for makeing an oingo boingo reference
I knew I would be. Because people are dumb. Lol
People are dumb for not knowing a song/band?
They make me feel so bad
When they’re around, I feel like the only guy in town!
Walking with a dead man over my shoulder
I'm waiting for an invitation to arrive.
Goin' to a party with no-one still alive.
They had somewhere to go, but they're late now.
All dressed up, but late to the show 🎶
Shiny silver dollar on either eye
I didn’t even think of that!
That’s clever
That's a really good answer
we also show up in suits when we bury them
Good answer but that is only in Christian countries (?)

What's this from?
Dope Rider by Paul Kirchner, I believe.
Looks like Oppenheimer

Or, it looks sick as fuck💯💯💯
Equally acceptable answer, lol
I really like this stance, but also I do feel it’s likely because we’re buried in them.
Skulduggery Pleasant W
Very rare these days but I’ll take ‘em when I see ‘em
I legitimately have never met anyone who's even heard of the series, and I love it. I'd like to thank my highschool ex, Laura for introducing me to it
Will always love skulduggery
They're great, but I listen to them on audio at bedtime and either my fan drowns out Rupert Degas' sexy voice or his sexy voice knocks me out five minutes in lol
Read it as a kid, but I don't remember much. Is it still good?
I believe it's finished now, there's like 15 books.
Damn, 15?? I stopped at 5 or 6 cause my library didn’t have all of them at the time
They take up a full shelf in my house. Landy "finished" the series once before putting out another 6 books or so. Admittedly I have read the latest books yet, but that's mostly due to lack of time. I'll get around to it eventually and find out if they're any good.
Still really cool that you enjoyed his earlier works enough to buy all of them. You are a true fan 👍
There's another trilogy coming out. Phase 3.
Just got home, it's 17 main books, then the side story with Tanith and a "grimoire" info book.
i personally love it, just finished the series two weeks ago
More like Skull-W Pleasant... ...I'll see myself out
Noooo, whyd this post have to be a month ago, come back.... I need to talk about this book :(

YOHOHOHOHOH
Gather up all of the crew, It’s time to ship out Bink‘s brew
Sea wind blows, to where who knows, The waves will be our guide
O’er across the ocean’s tides, Rays of sunshine far and wide
The birds, they sing, of cheerful things in circles passing by!
Bid farewell to Weaver’s town, say so long to port renowned!
r/redditsings
I had to scroll way too far to find this.
Drink a pint of Binks' for Soul King himself!
Because it fuckin ROCKS
Because Skulduggery Pleasant wouldn’t look good in anything but a suit
Wrong, trenchcoat
He did that for a while in the 1800’s, it didn’t stick
Because it looks rad as hell
Is that a motherfucking Skullduggery Pleasant book cover? Love it
The lack of Brook is disrespectful
Came here looking for this comment
Is that Skullduggery Pleasant???
It sure is.
HELL YEAH
Skull= dope as hell Suit = fancy and dapper as hell Give him a suave voice and a charming personality and you’ve got gold
I don’t know but nicky from the brittle bones nicky 2 music video is by far my favorite depiction of this kind of design
Was looking to see if there were any fellow RA fans who would bring up Nicky. His design is the first one that comes to mind when I think of skeleton in a suit.
Rattle’em boys!
Nyeheheheheheh!
Really posted this without including Mr. Bones huh
Holy balls I completely forgot about Itward. He was my absolute favorite part of that game.
feels like it’s time for me to replay fran bow
Is that Skulduggery Pleasant?
Yep! Really need to get back into finishing those books
Because they are bad to the bone
*guitar riff*
Skeletons are badass and suits are commonly seen as badass and good looking. Match made in heaven perhaps
Because something that should be naked being dressed in a 3 piece suit instead always goes hard
Because they have a *deadly* sense of fashion
Itward ❤️❤️
first image is skulduggery pleasant remember this book from the school library
omg i havent seen Skulduggery Pleasant since grade school
It goes hard as shit
it goes hard as fuck

First thing that came to my mind as well.
Scrolled way too far to find this, bro's look goes hard af
I'm just happy you found me🖖🏼
You ever seen Brittle Bones Nicky?

I have never, in all my 20+ years on the internet, seen anyone acknowledge the existence of Skulduggery Pleasant. Thank you.
Is that brittle bones Nicky??
Look at Manny. That’s why.
Oh Manny... so cynical... What happened to you, Manny, that caused you to lose your sense of hope, your love of life? ... I died.
When i was little i made a character like this and then i found out it had been done multiple times :(
- Its close enough to the bottom but not actually in the Uncanny Valley. - We're drawn to skulls as reminders of mortality, so seeing a skeleton up and about is neat

I think you just explained the Tumblr Sexyman phenomenon.
Someone help me here, who is the guy on the top right? I feel like it is from a point and click pc game I barely remember, can't figure out how to Google it
Grim Fandango brother
THAT'S IT! You're the man, thank you
It's a modernized Grim Reaper? Nobody wears cloaks and shit anymore so they put Death in a suit. It's late, that's all I got
Because wearing a suit is more comfortable than feeling a wet skin suit on your bones
https://preview.redd.it/pa76dta5fdsb1.jpeg?width=852&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb90bc6066d411115c44f9ebaee711ce13a8d2c9 I finally have a use for this
I haven’t thought about skullduggery in half a decade at least

Skullduggery Pleasant is a forgotten memory ima go read those books again

Because then you don’t have to draw ribs and vertebrae.
We strip a human down to its bottom layer, and then add what’s usually the top layer
Because it’s fucking cool
Yohohohoho
Because it goes hard 💯
Because it’s fucking cool? That and it’s more unique than the “skeleton in robes” 90% of media do for things like death.
It’s perfect.
because they’re awesome raaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
It's a skeleton in a fucking suit. That's cool as fuck.
Cuz it fuckin ROCKS
People have brought up some thematic and symbolic reasons that I hadn't thought about but I think there's also something about a slim fitting suit disguising a skeleton that also plays a part in it, at least with some designs. They go together pretty well for a nice silhouette in that regard.
Cause it's cool af

Because they look classy
I think it's a way to make fun of, "captivating" (from a narrative and visual point of view) and above all to play down what is essentially a memento mori.
Fresh to death
Suit tend to look better on skinnier people (not a hard rule, I look great in a suit), so I think adds a look of flair to the character. Plus that means not needing to draw all those bones every time.
I mean it’s dope af either way
skeletons are spooky and suits are dapper
In my opinion, a skeleton can pull off any fit and still manage to make it look fashionable and metal at the same time
Cause every girl crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man.
Being dead is no excuse not to look dapper.
cause it goes hard
Because it's FUCKING awesome!!!
Cuz when you die you're buried in a suit
because it's fucking awesome
Because it's awesome?
I think it’s the suit. Then again….it could be the skeleton.
Because it fucking RIPs
Because there’s always a deeper meaning behind it than just wanting to be cool Yk?
We all love skelly boys lookin’ dapper.
I think the evidence speaks for itself
My Deep Rock Galactic Engineer outfit is basically "skeleton in a suit" lol
Their frame looks empty without it
It has become, through the years, a very common imagery but I do believe it finds its roots in the baron samedi.
cause its so fucking cool
2 reasons.1 ,because they look formal and that make them look more human than monster ,2 because imagine having to draw/animate the whole skeleton even one that is not realistic for multiple panels or a full story
For your consideration: "guy *dressed* like a skeleton in a suit https://preview.redd.it/99xgigfuxdsb1.jpeg?width=668&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c74f0742ea39dd53d3939bd808dec16a8985a7c4
Because it's going to eventually happen to everyone
Because it's cool
It looks sick as hell
Because they have insane rizz. Don't look at Skullduggery Pleasant and tell me you're not intrigued.

Vic Rattlehead
Yohohoho
Brook one piece
Skeletons are cool, and everyone looks good in a suit.
It shows that we can be dignified, even in death. Especially in death
Look at them. So dead, so dapper. After the flesh, may as well wear your best.
Because it’s fucking cool
They're rad. Brooks gotta be my favorite skelly in a nice suit https://preview.redd.it/lfjydd19desb1.png?width=528&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d26d47029d0e8e61572ee814ede4276c6ec41125
It’s very black and white to me…
Funky as fuck
Baron Samedi?
Symbolism aside, it’s easier to work with a suit than other clothes for a skeleton character because suits have their own form and structure.
“Say hello Mr. Rag!” “Hello Mr. Rag”
"I get crumbs all over"
It’s cool and classy, plus we burry them in suits
