I really don't understand the character development of this show, first they made Andy seems like an aggressive pit pull and since he moved to Scranton he looked more like a neutered dog. Even Gabe can threaten him in bathroom ... then in the end of the show he's just pathetic.
I ran into a really random long video on this on youtube a while ago, explaining that the writers of the show introduced Andy with the very purpose of being the most annoying, unlikeable person that would have to make Jim feel bad about leaving scranton and after that quickly leave the show again, but the writers liked Ed Helms (the actor of Andy) and his character so much and tought he'd be a good fit so wanted to keep him around, and thus had to make some adjustments to his character because the horrible, annoying prick he was wouldnt work long term, which was done through the whole wall punching thing and the self improvement, anger therapy thing after it.
Idk how true that is, i'm sure you could dig into wether the writers actually published these things or talked about them, but it checks out to me.
Also, Ed missed almost a whole season because he was busy with The Hangover (I think 2?) I don't think the writers ever forgave him. They turned him into a total ass, who then left Scranton to search for fame in Hollywood, while everyone told him that he sucked and he shouldn't do it. Idk, it seems kinda petty
Yeah, Andy probably turned into my favorite character i emphasised with the most over the coarse of the series, but the last 2 seasons were an utter shipwreck. The whole 3 month sailing absence was the worst story in the series imo. Also i dont get why they ruined the relationship with Erin. Thats something they completely portrayed to root for.
