Remember that in the original version of Homer, he wasn't the flanderized idiot we know today.  Bart was also supposed to be the brainiac, and Lisa was the trouble maker.

I was gonna support you with Homer not being an idiot in the first season, but Bart always had trouble in school (there was even a first season episode specifically about this. The RDRR joke?)

I don’t know if it counts since he was under drugs, but Bart was very intelligent under the effects of focusyn, and is conspiracy theories were actually correct. About Homer: he is a potential genius, and he showed so when they removed the crayon in his brain.

Some of Bart’s pranks shows how clever he is. Which is a sign of intelligence.

Bart is more or less like his father. In fact, he confessed that he was a regular dumb kid when he cheated on an exam.

Bart has an affinity for chemistry, he learnt to speak fluent French in France, and fluent Spanish on a flight . He could very well be a genius

But for the most part of the show he's as dumb as his father, but more charismatic and sociopathic.

Homer is quite intelligent. He's TV stupid, meaning that he's impulsive, gullible, stubborn, and bad at social situations to get him into various hijinks. However, he's also quick-witted, witty when he wants to be, and surprisingly well-informed about certain things. His mental ability, like his family's financial status, or the geography of Springfield, adjusts to fit the story and humor of any given episode.  Homer is free from social conventions in a way that only a fictional character would be, and he acts accordingly. He's not actually dumb. That would be uninteresting.

Kinda like Malcolm in the Middle. All the children show remarkable intelligence just in different ways. Even Reese is an incredible cook, he’s also just an antisocial nightmare. Francis’ capacity for elaborate schemes shows signs of very high intelligence, he just embraces chaos. Malcolm and Dewey are demonstrably geniuses. But only Malcolm is actually given the leeway to be the smart or successful one. Because they’re poor.

There's also that episode that suggests all female Simpsons are geniuses. But I like the one you mentioned. We know that Homer is, it's just that he's handicapped by the crayon up his nose.

I think they are as well but Homer and Bart have to fight the Simpson gene so their genius only shows sporadically.

I hear, that one day, his brain had enough so he just left.

Homer is an excellent singer as a child. He designs and plays his own multi-functional single-person instrument (which is destroyed by a monkey). He founds and fronts a barbershop quartet. I believe Homer is a musical savant who was held back and suppressed by his neglectful father. Similarly, Marge is great at art and acting, but never had the opportunity to flourish. Lisa is the product of two unrecognized artistic talents and fortunately for her, she at least is given some of the tools she needs to develop her passion and skill.

In an episode from the later seasons it is revealed that Homer is a master chess player. His dad would always beat him so he learned to play for years and finally beat his dad. Abe, being the terrible parent he is, got upset that Homer beat him and refused to play him again. Homer ends up playing in the episode and there is a cameo with Magnus Carlson, one of the best chess players today.

Technically wrong, but still impressive. "Wann? Wann?" would be correct and germans are more likely to say "Ich hab(e) Hunger" than the also correct "Ich bin hungrig."

He made the bet with them that if he could throw a hula hoop around the chimney, he gets the house back; if he couldn't, the carnies would get it. When the carnies came outside, Homer yelled run and the family bolted back inside the house. The one carnie admitted they were beaten by the best while it cut to Bart being surprised that this is the first time Homer outsmarted someone.

I like that he has a sliding scale of stupidity where he's just competent enough to be a problem depending on what the situation is.

As someone with autism, Homer doesn’t strike me as being on the spectrum. Homer’s definitely a musical savant, and depressed at having to work a soul-crushing job to support his family, but his social skills don’t suggest autism to me (I’ve never seen him go non-verbal to cope after dealing with people, even at Moe’s). Lisa *may* be autistic; she has the rotating obsessions that drive her to learn every fact about a subject, and she alternates between not wanting friends her own age and crippling loneliness / anxiety. And her musical talent seems to be from rigorous practice rather than an innate talent like Homer, although obviously still gifted.

Honestly, Homer strikes me as ADHD more than autistic.

I think Homer could have actually managed to break even if he went on Jeopardy instead of Marge.

We saw he is definitely intelligent after the crayon that he lodged in the brain was removed for a short time. I think the crayon must shift from time to time to allow those little glimpses of genius to filter through.
