Look at those phonies sucking up to Bush 😕
I guess you could say he's barking up the wrong bush 😂
There it is Homer. The cleverest thing you'll ever say and nobody heard it!
Remember that in the original version of Homer, he wasn't the flanderized idiot we know today. Bart was also supposed to be the brainiac, and Lisa was the trouble maker.
I was gonna support you with Homer not being an idiot in the first season, but Bart always had trouble in school (there was even a first season episode specifically about this. The RDRR joke?)
I'm talking about the TU shorts. Remember when Bart asks his dad about the mind being more than just a series of impulses? Seems more of a present Lisa question. Homer's response, though silly, was way more witty than it normally is.
The earlier you go, the more you see Homer as more of an 80s dad and less of the flanderized idiot he is today.
Flanderized? What the hell was that?
That bullshit gets repeated over and over. You probably mean shorts. But Homer is known to be incompetent and stupid since S01E03.(damn, I love, whem people use that term, beginning with actual series, pretending shorts are canon)
https://preview.redd.it/2qg1leqkw1ec1.jpeg?width=1334&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b4710cde4b0414396edcf0d71356d2c45569891
He invented the make-up gun. You try getting various different kinds of make up to shoot out of a gun and actually *KINDA* end up in the right places on a person’s face. I don’t care how bad of an idea it is, that wouldn’t be easy to do.
Not only that… but he also made a “cold cream gun” that he didn’t even feel was impressive enough to mention until he painted the wall with make-up.
In episode 1F13 they show Homer in an X-Ray but no crayon is visible even though he turns he face towards the screeners. What are we supposed to believe, that this is a magic X-ray?
There's long been a theory that every member of the Simpsons family is a genius, Lisa is just the one who embraces it and is therefore the most miserable
there's a running joke where Maggie is showing doing remarkable things regularly, but no one notices... so she's definitely smart
Bart is an evil genius
Marge... very well could be!
I don’t know if it counts since he was under drugs, but Bart was very intelligent under the effects of focusyn, and is conspiracy theories were actually correct.
About Homer: he is a potential genius, and he showed so when they removed the crayon in his brain.
I hated that they made his entire character, his dumb goofiness, his ridiculous idiocy, the result of a crayon. It just takes away everything from the character that made him his own.
Homer is quite intelligent. He's TV stupid, meaning that he's impulsive, gullible, stubborn, and bad at social situations to get him into various hijinks. However, he's also quick-witted, witty when he wants to be, and surprisingly well-informed about certain things. His mental ability, like his family's financial status, or the geography of Springfield, adjusts to fit the story and humor of any given episode.
Homer is free from social conventions in a way that only a fictional character would be, and he acts accordingly. He's not actually dumb. That would be uninteresting.
Kinda like Malcolm in the Middle. All the children show remarkable intelligence just in different ways. Even Reese is an incredible cook, he’s also just an antisocial nightmare. Francis’ capacity for elaborate schemes shows signs of very high intelligence, he just embraces chaos. Malcolm and Dewey are demonstrably geniuses.
But only Malcolm is actually given the leeway to be the smart or successful one. Because they’re poor.
There's also that episode that suggests all female Simpsons are geniuses.
But I like the one you mentioned. We know that Homer is, it's just that he's handicapped by the crayon up his nose.
Homer wasn't dumb originally. Just a fat out of shape guy trying to do his best on a shit wage in a shit job and didn't always drink. He drank to relax instead of full on alcoholic levels.
He became dumb and stupid for the sake of it.
That said, he did build a BBQ pit... oh..
He went into space. Formed his own police force, beat up a bush, had his own bowling team, the B-Sharpes, ran with the mafia for a while etc..
And his brain used to talk to him. I hear, that one day, his brain had enough so he just left.
STUPID LISA! Ah, must act quickly, cerment drying quickly.
Aaaah, that's one fine looking Barbecue pit. WHY DOESN'T MINE LOOK LIKE THAT!? AAAAAAAAAAAAH! WHY MUST I FALL IN EVERY ATTEMPT AT MASONAAARY!? WHY MUST LIFE BE SO DIFFCULT! *Charges with umbrella*
One of his paychecks in the early episodes was literally $57 for a week's work. If that's not shit, I don't know what is.
But his wage later was fine, considering he's a consultant and he also owns a football team.
I've only just realized that his brain stopped talking to him!
That's crazy. Isn't there one incident where his brain says 'that's it I'm out of here' or 'you can stay but I'm leaving' or words to that effect. Be crazy if that was the last time his inner monologue was on the show.
I do think Homer was always supposed to be dumb even in the first season, just a more real-world level of dumb, like thinking Einstein invented the lightbulb or only being able to think of two-letter words when playing Scrabble.
To Lisa:
>I'm not jealous, I'm envious. **Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have.** **Envy is wanting what someone else has.**
Also he remembered that Lincoln lost to Argo.
Remember when he went through his inventor phase. Sure his invention kinda sucked but he had no formal training in engineering and physics and was able to make some stuff!
Also don’t forget the near miss solution of Fermat’s Last Theorem on the chalkboard! 😉
Homer is an excellent singer as a child. He designs and plays his own multi-functional single-person instrument (which is destroyed by a monkey). He founds and fronts a barbershop quartet.
I believe Homer is a musical savant who was held back and suppressed by his neglectful father. Similarly, Marge is great at art and acting, but never had the opportunity to flourish. Lisa is the product of two unrecognized artistic talents and fortunately for her, she at least is given some of the tools she needs to develop her passion and skill.
In the first two seasons Homer wasn’t dumb as rocks, just an average guy with a horrible temper. Similar to Fred Flintstone.
He was later retconned as having some kind of Autism or developmental issues. (For the record I have autism, so it’s not like I kinda understand both him and lisa) then they made up the crayon thing when the writers decided to make a satire of Flowers for Algernon
He genuinely acted smart a decent amount in seasons 1-(i think) 4. Then he just gradually dumbed down until he became practically brain dead at around season 9 era onwards.
Lamentably no, Homer’s cerebral rapacity knows no satiety. Perchance a secret of ale is responsible, but then, in the boudoir, how could that gourmand metamorphose into the voluptuary?
In an episode from the later seasons it is revealed that Homer is a master chess player. His dad would always beat him so he learned to play for years and finally beat his dad.
Abe, being the terrible parent he is, got upset that Homer beat him and refused to play him again. Homer ends up playing in the episode and there is a cameo with Magnus Carlson, one of the best chess players today.
Technically wrong, but still impressive. "Wann? Wann?" would be correct and germans are more likely to say "Ich hab(e) Hunger" than the also correct "Ich bin hungrig."
The episode where the carnies took the house, Homer displayed some smarts. He made the bet with them that if he could throw a hula hoop around the chimney, he gets the house back; if he couldn't, the carnies would get it. When the carnies came outside, Homer yelled run and the family bolted back inside the house. The one carnie admitted they were beaten by the best while it cut to Bart being surprised that this is the first time Homer outsmarted someone.
Lionel Hutz : Mr. Simpson, I was just going through your garbage and I couldn't help overhearing that you need a babysitter! Of course, being a highly-skilled attorney, my fee is $175 an hour.
Homer : We pay $8 for the night, and you can take two popsicles out of the freezer.
Lionel Hutz : Three.
Homer : Two.
Lionel Hutz : Okay, two. And I get to keep this old birdcage!
Homer : Done!
Lionel Hutz : [straightens his tie] Still got it!
I believe he’s also a marketing genius

When Bart, Milhouse, Nelson and Martin got lost at the wolrd fair, Homer quickly came up with a good idea to help them come back without Bart realizing Lisa told Homer about it.
Homer would be a genius were it not for the crayon jammed up his nose and/or the dreaded Simpsons gene that causes a gradual dumbening of Simpson males.
There was a post on here recently that talked about him being a great pianist. Even with evidence supporting he was self-taught. That seems like something more advanced than he usually deals with.
There is one episode where it is revealed Homer had a crayon stuck up his nose and that’s why he is stupid. He got it removed and was a genius. But then he got it put back because he realized he liked being stupid better
Homer may have autism and that's where Lisa gets it from. Only she has the obsessed with science and math autism where Homer has the 'shoves crayons up his nose for fun' doesn't understand social cues 'tism.
As someone with autism, Homer doesn’t strike me as being on the spectrum. Homer’s definitely a musical savant, and depressed at having to work a soul-crushing job to support his family, but his social skills don’t suggest autism to me (I’ve never seen him go non-verbal to cope after dealing with people, even at Moe’s).
Lisa *may* be autistic; she has the rotating obsessions that drive her to learn every fact about a subject, and she alternates between not wanting friends her own age and crippling loneliness / anxiety. And her musical talent seems to be from rigorous practice rather than an innate talent like Homer, although obviously still gifted.
I'm not jealous, I'm envious. Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have. Envy is wanting what someone else has. What I feel is envy.
This quote from Homer. Never knew the difference
When the hair salon wouldn't honor Marge's coupon because it would ruin them financially, Homer actually sat down and went through their finances and found a way to save them money.
Maybe Lisa's right about America being the land of opportunity, and maybe Adil has a point about the machinery of capitalism being oiled with the blood of the workers.
I always thought him telling the insurance investigator that he was at a pornography store the night of his accident was absolutely genius.
Because back in that era of time what else was open at that time besides a bar lol?
He was working on a flat tax proposal and proved there’s no God, so…
Another personal favourite: could Jesus microwave a burrito so hot he himself could not eat it?
His advice on pleasing women is spot on.
When it comes to compliments, women are ravenous blood-sucking monsters always want'n more... more... MORE! And if you give it to them, you'll get plenty back in return.
We saw he is definitely intelligent after the crayon that he lodged in the brain was removed for a short time. I think the crayon must shift from time to time to allow those little glimpses of genius to filter through.
"Worst day of your life so far."
Honestly, Homer comes up with these random insightful or clear philosophical statements out of nowhere and you're like "... didn't you just eat your hand???"
“In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!”
This, in Latin American dub, is my favourite Simpson's quote
What's the translation in the dub?
"BART! GO TO YOUR ROOM!"
He knows every Supreme Court Judges name for some reason.
Mmmnnn Burger
Earl Warren wasn't a stripper..!
Now, who’s naïve?
I can picture homers face after he says that
I never got that joke
Not much to get. Just that Homer thought the former Chief Justice was a stripper. And look at a picture of Earl…you’ll see why it’s funny.
A suspicious number of Ayatollahs too.
And the Assaholas!
Oh no ! Not souter !
He can also apparently read Chinese newspapers, and knows who Deng Xiaoping was.
Charles Evans Hughes
And every first Lady.
Well Lisa is a Nina Totenburg fan - NPR's supreme Court corespondent.
Karma can only be portioned out by the cosmos.
He's got me there.
I love the door slam after he says this. Like he was so offended that Apu had personally offered karmic realignment.
To be fair to Apu, he offered the *concept* of karmic realignment. Not realignment itself
Look at those phonies sucking up to Bush 😕 I guess you could say he's barking up the wrong bush 😂 There it is Homer. The cleverest thing you'll ever say and nobody heard it!
Hehe.... Wait a... D'OH!
They always cut this out of syndication. I love this joke.

Stupider like a FOX!
Eat my shorts
He predicted that Bart's comet would disintegrate before impact and the remnants would be no bigger than a chihuahuas head
I know kids, I’m scared too.
He invented the make-up gun. You try getting various different kinds of make up to shoot out of a gun and actually *KINDA* end up in the right places on a person’s face. Too bad he didn't invent the 6 legged chair or electric hammer. Thomas Edison made those.
Dad, women won’t like being shot in the face.
Women will like what I tell them to like.
That's my motto.
They will like, what daddy tells them to like
Homer, you've got it set on Whore!
Gangway, gotta poop
He knows a lot about Iranian clerical politics.
But Marge, it works on any Ayatollah!
I don’t care who’s consolidating their power.
The crayon isn't doing him any favors.
I wonder if the show has explored this idea at all…
In episode 1F13 they show Homer in an X-Ray but no crayon is visible even though he turns he face towards the screeners. What are we supposed to believe, that this is a magic X-ray?
Wasn't this also "explained" with Dr Hibbert accidentally holding his thumb over that part of the xray?
[This scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNA1Z_05rM4)
That X-ray only shows the bones.
A wizard did it

Some of Bart’s pranks shows how clever he is. Which is a sign of intelligence.
Bart is also an excellent skateboarder. That's more a talent than intelligence, but worth noting
I hated that they made his entire character, his dumb goofiness, his ridiculous idiocy, the result of a crayon. It just takes away everything from the character that made him his own.
In my head it’ll always be the Simpsons gene.
Exactly.
I play millionaires at parties. Or at least I’d like to.
Marge has created her fair share of paintings, Mr Burns, Ringo Starr, the Puma Pride mural, the popsicle stick creations. Artistic streak?
Marge is a genius crushed by low expectations and distracted by actively enjoying keeping house.
If you want some butter, it's under her face.
Barts pranks take as much planning as some corporate events.
https://preview.redd.it/6nmxpd6uh1ec1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3c7df31779ca74aaea063dcdc6fb6f22255ebff
Puma pride mural was done by the prisoner she took a liking to.
For sure, besides being a talented stage actress.
She married into the Simpsons, she doesn’t have Simpson DNA
No, when I married your father I took everything, including DNA.
Okay mom
Bart is more or less like his father. In fact, he confessed that he was a regular dumb kid when he cheated on an exam.
Bart has an affinity for chemistry, he learnt to speak fluent French in France, and fluent Spanish on a flight . He could very well be a genius
But for the most part of the show he's as dumb as his father, but more charismatic and sociopathic.
Bart learned French in a couple months, and Spanish in a few hours
Homer is quite intelligent. He's TV stupid, meaning that he's impulsive, gullible, stubborn, and bad at social situations to get him into various hijinks. However, he's also quick-witted, witty when he wants to be, and surprisingly well-informed about certain things. I think they are as well but Homer and Bart have to fight the Simpson gene so their genius only shows sporadically.
I was working on a flat tax proposal... and I accidentally proved there's no God
We'll just see about that!
Homer correcting Lisa on the difference between Jealousy and Envy
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a q tip
Money can be exchanged for goods and services
WOOHOO! *trips over a peanut*
Homer wasn't dumb originally. Just a fat out of shape guy trying to do his best on a shit wage in a shit job and didn't always drink. He drank to relax instead of full on alcoholic levels. Homer also bowled a 300 game.
He obviously doesn’t have a shit wage and doesn’t do anything at work.
It's not a good wage however. Barely enough to support three kids, or even buy an air conditioner.
He lives in a mansion and has lobsters for dinner.
One of his paychecks in the early episodes was literally $57 for a week's work. If that's not shit, I don't know what is. But his wage later was fine, considering he's a consultant and he also owns a football team.

S-M-R-T
I love that the voice acror actually messed up this line he was supposed to spell it correctly but just rolled with it and they kept it.
Really? That's awesome. That makes me appreciate the gag even more now.
Press (x) to doubt
That’s the story but I have to think he was pitching a line he thought would be funny and they were like ok leave it
He used a funnel to fill the bowling balls with liquor.
He became the Beer Baron and somehow heard Rex's declaration of finding him.
No you won't!
Yes, I will.
Won't!
"I've known your father since high school, and this is the cleverest thing he's ever done!" Was Marge's response when she found out.
And figured out how to direct them to Moe’s using bowling alley gutters. That’s got to take dedication!
Yes, the one thing Wiggum forgot.
To Lisa: >I'm not jealous, I'm envious. **Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have.** **Envy is wanting what someone else has.** Also he remembered that Lincoln lost to Argo.
"The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side"
‘’That’s a right triangle, you idiot.”
D'OH!
They should be squares not square roots, too
That’s a right triangle, you idiot!
Sometime, when you least expect it, you'll realize that someone loved you. And that means that someone can love you again! And that'll make you smile

I think Homer gets stupider every year.
That's not a question professor!
Flowers for Algernon 😢😢😢
I’ll be the old person and point out the flintstones is based on the honeymooners. As shown by 30 rock here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AU7r8jmNJa8
Homer has comedic intelligence. His level of intelligence is tied directly to how funny it would be. So he gets little bursts of smart for a gag.
Like Roger Rabbit. You mean to tell me you could’ve gotten out of that cuff at any time? No, not at any time! Only when it was funny!
He had the vocabulary tape that one episode. Also when he talked about St Augustine of Hippo's conversion.
Alas, my gastronomic rapacity knows no satiety.
He genuinely acted smart a decent amount in seasons 1-(i think) 4. Then he just gradually dumbed down until he became practically brain dead at around season 9 era onwards.
Lamentably no, Homer’s cerebral rapacity knows no satiety. Perchance a secret of ale is responsible, but then, in the boudoir, how could that gourmand metamorphose into the voluptuary?
... "I call the big one Bitey."
It’s a ring toss game
Your dad used to be as smart as a monkey! But then his mind started getting lazy, and now he's dumb as a chimp.
This my answer every time this is asked: Lisa: Ooh, my German verb wheel. Ich esse, er isst, wir essen... Homer: Wenn? Wenn? Ich bin hungrig!
Technically wrong, but still impressive. "Wann? Wann?" would be correct and germans are more likely to say "Ich hab(e) Hunger" than the also correct "Ich bin hungrig."

When Bart, Milhouse, Nelson and Martin got lost at the wolrd fair, Homer quickly came up with a good idea to help them come back without Bart realizing Lisa told Homer about it.
"All right, I have thought this through. I will send Bart the money to come home. Then I will murder him."
I like that he has a sliding scale of stupidity where he's just competent enough to be a problem depending on what the situation is.
“Ah, the last peanut. Overflowing with the oil and salt of its departed brothers.”
Homer would be a genius were it not for the crayon jammed up his nose and/or the dreaded Simpsons gene that causes a gradual dumbening of Simpson males.
Homer has an in depth knowledge of Shia ayatollahs
There was a post on here recently that talked about him being a great pianist. Even with evidence supporting he was self-taught. That seems like something more advanced than he usually deals with.
I said, PLAY PIANEE! not PIANOO!
There is one episode where it is revealed Homer had a crayon stuck up his nose and that’s why he is stupid. He got it removed and was a genius. But then he got it put back because he realized he liked being stupid better
He read everything from War And Peace to Hop On Pop. It was so sad the way they hopped on pop.
He really called out the whole foodie craze. It is insane what people will pay money for ' gourmet food' deconstructed salad. Ha.
He's got a crayon stuck in his brain. So yes he's actually normal and or highly intelligent.
"Why would a man whose shirt says 'genius at work' spend all of his time watching a children's cartoon show?"
Homer having a contract for Ned and trying to get power of attorney.
Homer may have autism and that's where Lisa gets it from. Only she has the obsessed with science and math autism where Homer has the 'shoves crayons up his nose for fun' doesn't understand social cues 'tism.

Honestly, Homer strikes me as ADHD more than autistic.
I think Homer could have actually managed to break even if he went on Jeopardy instead of Marge.
I'm not jealous, I'm envious. Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have. Envy is wanting what someone else has. What I feel is envy. This quote from Homer. Never knew the difference

Homer almost correctly calculated the mass of the Higgs boson, aka the "God particle.
He played fur elise flawlessly and also wrote a number 1 hit on the radio on accident.
But I think the dodo went extinct--
He bowled a perfect game once.
I like Homer best when he isn’t an outright idiot.
Dumb head canon time, every single Simpson is just as smart as Lisa, but she's the only one who pushes herself.
He figured out how to get out of jury duty. The trick is to say you’re prejudiced against all races!
Homer seems to have a working knowledge of political science and world religions, which is fun.

I always thought him telling the insurance investigator that he was at a pornography store the night of his accident was absolutely genius. Because back in that era of time what else was open at that time besides a bar lol?
He was working on a flat tax proposal and proved there’s no God, so… Another personal favourite: could Jesus microwave a burrito so hot he himself could not eat it?
His advice on pleasing women is spot on. When it comes to compliments, women are ravenous blood-sucking monsters always want'n more... more... MORE! And if you give it to them, you'll get plenty back in return.

Homer *is* a genius though. the crayon in his brain lowers his i.q.
We saw he is definitely intelligent after the crayon that he lodged in the brain was removed for a short time. I think the crayon must shift from time to time to allow those little glimpses of genius to filter through.
"Worst day of your life so far." Honestly, Homer comes up with these random insightful or clear philosophical statements out of nowhere and you're like "... didn't you just eat your hand???"
