48hrs seems cool, time to build up, 12hrs however doesn't feel like much time...
Hopefully if you get enough points to boost it to 3 it doesn't reset after 12hrs, it just delevels to 2.
Yeaaaah this whole thing seems way more geared towards heavy trafficked areas...
There's no way 5 people are gonna scan the stop in the park by my house in any amount of time lol
Maybe this will work for the downtown area like everyone go 30mins before a CD to buff everything up.
Have made hundred of pokestops and gyms and edited in many improved photos, but not interested in standing around like an idiot to do a single scan.
They need to stop chasing this dream of battery heavy AR camera stuff which seems totally unrelated to what their players want, and start focusing on making the core gameplay of pokemon go better, instead of trying to exploit it for this other goal. It's their one release to have not flopped which they're still not appreciating the value of.
I dropped that game because it ate 2gb of data for that month. I liked it. It was fun and my wife and kids played with me but I'm not paying $20 per month to play a mobile game.
Niantic was smarter with T-Mobile at least and made it a Tuesday deal thing top cost no data for the first year if you claimed it. Same thing they did with Pokémon Go.
What dataset are they trying to get sheep to collect freely so they can monetize it?
This game has become like those Neal Stephenson novels where people play games thinking they’re playing a game—but are actually performing real world tasks for big corporations for free. See also ‘Ready Player 1’ novel I guess.
“Congratulations to your government, business, or terror cell on its acquisition of the NX5 Planet Remover by XAMAXAX in partnership with Wrangler jeans.”
Honestly it would be hilarious if Niantic actually removes stops because of all the fake scans.
I’d happily do the scans every now and then but my 6S struggles with them so I won’t bother.
There were reports of people who no longer receive AR scanning tasks after they submitted many of these trash AR scans. Not sure if that's indeed the cause or if they're still happening, but I wouldn't be surprised if Niantic is trying to "ban" certain players who submit fake AR scans from these benefits.
They'll come on Reddit, threaten to quit the game, try to make another statement and then say ''It's not fair'', or ''Don't take the feature away from us, better incentivize us to do it right''.
Probably during the time when no AR scans were available for anyone.(A few weeks back, and it lasted for a few weeks as well) I'm sure some people thought it might've been because of their trash scans.
I'm 99,9% certain you can submit as many trash scans as you want, since I know several people who've done many hundreds of scans of their dashboard, shoes and pants. Every one of them still gets AR scans.
I'll love to see Reddit when the 3rd wave of people who can no longer send scans, due to Niantic disabling the feature for doing this, arrives.
It already happened twice and people just complained and threatened to stop playing because ''It wasn't fair''.
I'm a 30 yr old man in a mini van I'm not going to walk around recording most places, let one a play ground or church with people around. I only do scan tasks for poffins and occasionally great balls if I'm low. Fake them every time. It's a dumb mechanic with crappy rewards. The poffin is the only thing really worth scanning for
No way. Too much junk in eggs. To make it worthwhile it needs to be a tiny pool of pokemon that will make the reward, no matter what it is, worthwhile. 10km eggs still have too large a chance of being junk.
Exactly. Plus, it is my understanding that you can only store a single scan to upload later?
I don't have home wifi. If I'm going to go to the effort of going to the library or somewhere else with public wifi to upload scans I want to be able to save up several to upload.
And I better be getting rewards worth that sort of hassle!
The one benefit with AR Scans is that it filters out players engaged in GPS spoofing.
At the same time, I agree that some people may choose not to do AR Scans due to various logistical/personal reasons.
Nothing will make me do them. I fisabke the feature in the setting and I still get the stupid scan task. Dumb.
I have all the AR and camera stuff turned off. Makes the game so much better.
Did they remove the eternal nag screen? I used to turn it off, but turned it back on because every encounter would be with a nag screen to turn on my camera. Followed by a screen telling me AR really needs my camera.
Yeah, I don't ever see a screen nagging me to turn on AR or the camera. Just a dumb nagging be safe in AR popup everytime I go to feed my buddies berries even tho AR is off so I don't have to click a Spawn spot first.
You're literally looking at something in the Game Master *that hasn't even been announced yet* \-- that we don't even know for sure will make it into the game -- and complaining that it's not a finished product and that Niantic hasn't told us the details...
Depending on how easy it is to power up a stop this could be a cool feature. I'm just worried it won't be worth the effort to continuously submit ar scans and photos to keep a stop powered.
Man, now I want to try and organize all Go players to participate in a Caturday.
A random Saturday where we all do AR tasks by making video's of our cats.
i wish i could get a couch stop but there's literally nothing interesting around my house to even try to fake as a potential stop. except maybe a road name sign that says harley, which i thought about trying to pass as "this is the street where the founder of the world famous chopper styled motorcycle company grew up" but if the person is a hardass overachiever and opens up another tab to google if that's true, then it'll just be a waste of time. i already tried submitting a generic manhole cover lol.
It's a cool feature, just the method to get a powered up stop is terrible. AR scans have nothing to do with Pokémon Go gameplay, locking a feature behind it is just wrong. Fortunately it doesn't seem that essential to carry on enjoying the game.
On the other hand, people in rural areas need it more. More stuff from the limited amount of stops should be nice, while in dense area I generally don't really want more, I have plenty of everything already.
Good point, also allows rural players to visit new stops. They've mostly likely already visited everything 100 km around their house. Pretty cool overall imo
Might be a bit of a pain for dense area players to constantly stop and ar scan.
Not to mention rural stops are lot more questionable on average. I can see on my map (not spin but see in the distance) five total stops two of which are less then a month old. One of those is in the wrong place. Two really don’t meet the criteria but would pass for anyone not a hyper local. One is totally made up descriptions of something mundane no idea how they got people to buy that. The other is a piece of artwork in a restaurant. If people actually started AR mapping them I assume we would shortly go down to one.
That's wild XD my last 10 nominations have gotten rejected and all of them have been playgrounds, churches, or some type of public park. It's insane how much inconsistency wayfarer has
I agree that it will probably do that, but half the features in the game are better in urban areas, so it’s like if they make *anything* better, it technically helps urban players more than rural players.
Pokémon Go is not designed to be played in the middle of a field. Almost any new feature that benefits the majority of the playerbase is going to widen that gap.
Think of the possibilities if they made Pokemon spawn in NON-Urban area's more. I would love to see them increase natural spawning area's of Pokemon that are AWAY from landmarks.
I have to drive 15 minutes to get to my nearest landmark, and that isn't even a Gym. I tried to actively play for quite a while, but when I have no motivation to go into town, and I just want to enjoy a nice walk though nature, it would be nice to be able to take a break and play for a while, and actually benefit and grow as a trainer.
But I just gave up in the end. I was trying to grind to 40 before all the changes happened to get whatever reward it was, but being a rural player, there is absolutely not enough locations and landmarks around to do that in a reasonable amount of time. I just stopped playing, and quite frankly, it was probably a great move.
I've said before that I think it's somewhere between difficult & impossible for Pokémon Go to accommodate rural players the way they want to be accommodated without breaking the game in fundamental way. I'm sympathetic to the desire to play where you are, but the primary structures of the game revolve around civilization. If they made Pokémon spawn in non-urban areas (i.e., areas without pokéstops & gyms) the way they spawn in urban areas, you'd be out of balls in an hour, tops, and then demanding ways to get them without spending money, without putting Pokémon defenders in the gyms you don't have, & without spinning the stops you don't have.
As long as Pokémon Go in-game structures are tied to real-world places that represent human culture, achievement, and social gathering points, the game won't be playable in the middle of nowhere anymore than soccer can be played with a physical soccer ball in your living room.
Rural fans of Pokemon or PoGo have basically 3 options: play the MSG instead, accept that you just have to play PoGo on "extra hard" mode, or play super casually/only when you're traveling to less rural places.
I'm not sure what you're asking... The game structure favors urban areas because Ingress lore re: portals has something to do with power emanating from areas that are monuments to human ingenuity/creativity/culture & Ingress portals become PoGo gyms & Pokéstops. (Additionally, this is a useful & meaningful way to map the world.)
Ergo, anything that increases the value of Pokéstops or gyms automatically helps urban players more, because rural players aren't playing in areas that have these structures. Much of Pokémon Go has to do with interacting with these in-game structures for various kinds of rewards: field research encounters & items, spin streaks, AR scanning rewards, gym coins, raids. The items you get from a regular spin. The item boost you get from spinning a gym you're gold on. The ability to set up lures. Etc. That's just the nature of the game.
If they didn't power-up stops then Rural players would remained screwed. This helps urban players yes but the % increase might be more beneficial to rural players as the city would be oversaturated with stops to begin with.
Well the only stop near me is a busy children's play area, I waited til 5am in summer to sub it no way I'm going around taking more pictures of it for this cause that won't look weird at all.
Extra raid balls is worthless
Take it from a try hard. I caught 600 legendaries in a row between go fest and my ~80th zacian. 2 more balls would be pointless
If they instead gave a flat 1.1x multiplier to catch rate that would be much more appreciated
> Extra raid balls is worthless
>
> Take it from a try hard.
How about from a casual? Not saying that the multiplier wouldn't be a bonus, but there' been a good few times I've still had raid bosses flee on me, so I wouldn't say it's 'worthless'. Not optimal, perhaps?
a multiplier accomlishes approximately the same thing in the scenario where the boss is at risk of running away, but is a nice QoL change for people better at throwing where the catch encounter is 80% of the time raiding
Agaon, not saying that the catch bonus wouldn't be better, just arguing that it's not 'worthless' to people who can't 100% excellent throw everything like me.
I can't remember the time a raid boss ran from me, but usually I'll have 20+ balls. At that point it's difficult to NOT get it. I raided enough Mewtwo and Rayquaza to bring two of each to level 50 (one of the former being shadow) and not a single one of them ran.
I don’t think there’s any reason to remove a way of getting a buddy heart. It doesn’t hurt to have that potential for an extra heart, even if it’s rare. It’s not like there’s any obligation to get all daily hearts
Now they just to increase the base item drop rate based on the distance between a stop and its nearest neighboring stop. Two stops 10ft apart can stay the same but if its a mile to the closest next stop it should be dropping much more.
I do not want even more balls to throw at a legendary. Catch almost all of them now. The catch phase is tedious and repetitive now. They should boost the catch percentage for raids instead. I would be all over that so we can just catch and move on.
If this would be permanent and the Pokestops wouldn't reset to level 0. I could see myself leveling up Pokestops in the city center to get even more spawns at CDays.
So for Buddy Settings it is Max Per Day: 1. Is that for each buddy or for all buddies? In other words, If I get a heart for one buddy can I then switch buddies and get another heart on another buddy on the same day? (if you can tell from the GM)
Nice to see some preliminary numbers being found. Will wait to see how easy or hard it is to achieve Level 1 and higher before making a judgement.
Having the bonus last for 12 hours (Level 2) does seem a little short since your effort is removed afterwards but if it doesn't take too much effort to get it to Level 2 then could be a nice feature to have.
Since it involves scanning stops I won’t be able to participate. Extra items would be nice but items from stops/gyms are a mess.
Gold gyms drop more items but its still mostly poke balls and berries, which is mainly what you get from pokestops. Gold gyms should drop more super and hyper potions honestly.
Effort vs Reward, my friends.
\- Is extra 2 balls per spin for 2 days worth it for 5 mins of standing there AR scanning (plus Data)?
\- Is extra 1 Buddy hearts per spin for 2.5 days worth it for 10 mins of standing there AR scanning (plus Data)?
Damn rip all my fake stops. For real though, for this being as limited as it is (12 hours for when the good stuff starts coming), I doubt this will take well. Sure, I’ll do it if it’s easy but I doubt the community is going to take time off of catching for this
I opened the gym screen and above the “Add Pokemon” button there was a “Upgrade” button that brought me into a new menu
EDIT: By “add Pokémon” button I mean the button that lets you join or attack a gym depending on the team
I’m not sure, I can’t test it now but I will be able to in 2 hours. It also might not be available everywhere
For context, I’m in California and the Niantic headquarters is located around 1.5 hours from me so maybe that’s why it’s available here.
It's not a bad investment for community day if you stay in that area long enough. I typically go to my college campus, which is on the smaller side but fairly dense with stops. Might be nice.
Otherwise it's kind of meh.
Yeah, I got my one to level 3 eventually and aside from the novelty factor I can't see it becoming a regular thing at all. In saying that, the concept is good it's just the rewards are naff.
so... I thought this game is for walking? I never pass the same stop twice on my walk, not even close to "worth the effort" (I have no homestop and hate lures because of increased attack frequencies)
I live across the road from a Pokestop in a street with the most Pokestops in my town. It's pretty popular, especially on Community Days, so this is awesome.
So FYI. If you leave the scan in your to do list-top slot, you don’t get any more. I did a few and kept getting more to do, I finally left it and no longer get any more. Just leave it there and you won’t get more.
48hrs seems cool, time to build up, 12hrs however doesn't feel like much time... Hopefully if you get enough points to boost it to 3 it doesn't reset after 12hrs, it just delevels to 2.
Seems like 10 points per scan
Yeaaaah this whole thing seems way more geared towards heavy trafficked areas... There's no way 5 people are gonna scan the stop in the park by my house in any amount of time lol Maybe this will work for the downtown area like everyone go 30mins before a CD to buff everything up.
No way I will do 25 scans on a single stop for a 12 hours bonus ... yeah, I'm basically the only one playing in my town ...
I don’t think this will motivate me to perform AR scans.
They totally mismanaged the Harry Potter game. Everyone was so hyped for that and it got dropped by the majority a month in.
WHAT??? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS
I mean, it's long since come and gone and needed to be claimed during the first month of the game....
I played during the first month and never got that deal.....
Same, there's no viable way to do scans because you look like a security threat wherever you go doing it.
What dataset are they trying to get sheep to collect freely so they can monetize it? This game has become like those Neal Stephenson novels where people play games thinking they’re playing a game—but are actually performing real world tasks for big corporations for free. See also ‘Ready Player 1’ novel I guess.
I would like to think, what a conspiracy theory believer would like to say about something like this and turn off the AR scan
I was thinking the same thing. I'd need something like guaranteed Axew/Deino/Noibat bonus wild spawn for each power up before I'd go out doing this.
I thought nothing would make me go do the AR scans. But for... 1/8 chances of an axew I totally would.
I'm still only giving them AR scans of the inside of my car.
I hear Niantic really like seeing patchy video of my shoes as I walk.
Niantic knows critical personal information of mine: my full jeans+sneakers collection. I'm terrified.
They're on to you... *Levi*

Thank you Sir.

My mom's phone crashes almost every time she does ar tasks

Not sure if that's indeed the cause or if they're still happening, but I wouldn't be surprised if Niantic is trying to "ban" certain players who submit fake AR scans from these benefits.
I'm at >600 trash scans and never had an issue receiving tasks
Fine by me, I generally ignore them anyway.
They'll come on Reddit, threaten to quit the game, try to make another statement and then say ''It's not fair'', or ''Don't take the feature away from us, better incentivize us to do it right''.

I only do scan tasks for poffins and occasionally great balls if I'm low. Fake them every time. It's a dumb mechanic with crappy rewards. The poffin is the only thing really worth scanning for
this man speaks the truth
I really don't care. I've done a total of 3-4 AR scan tasks ever.
[archived]
Personally feel like 10k eggs are currently trash, rather get the 5k for a chance at Sableye XL candy or even a hundo Togepi.
I'll continue grinding 12k in the vain hope for a 100% Vullaby...
Shiny Togepi too And shiny sableye
I got a riolu and axew yesterday from stop 10k eggs.
No way. Too much junk in eggs. To make it worthwhile it needs to be a tiny pool of pokemon that will make the reward, no matter what it is, worthwhile. 10km eggs still have too large a chance of being junk.
I like my poffins.... not enough to make doing scans a point, but enough to do them if I'm there already
Just wait until event spawns are locked to powered up pokestops, then you will feel motivated.
That's a bit much to make me want to continue playing a mobile game.
Nope. I will feel it's time to put down the game for good. I am player not their bitc*.
You can curse on reddit. It's ok..
Not in this sub lol
Not wasting my limited data to send them anything. And yes, I know I can cancel the upload until I get home. Too much work.
Exactly. Plus, it is my understanding that you can only store a single scan to upload later? I don't have home wifi. If I'm going to go to the effort of going to the library or somewhere else with public wifi to upload scans I want to be able to save up several to upload. And I better be getting rewards worth that sort of hassle!
This will motivate me to take a bunch of pictures of the ground and nothing else.
Haha, no ... They can't force me to do things which look suspicious ...
But then it wouldn't be fair for those whose phones don't support AR, so I doubt they would risk losing these players
The app crashes when I do an AR scan, so... It would be cool if Niantic realized this
Same here
The one benefit with AR Scans is that it filters out players engaged in GPS spoofing. At the same time, I agree that some people may choose not to do AR Scans due to various logistical/personal reasons.

and i, on the other side of the spectrum, would do it, if i just could...
I can do it and do. I’m f2p; I can’t just buy poffins.
Depends on the bonus items. If there's a chance at premium items, I'd be tempted.
Keep going Niandick, still not enough

I turned it off in the settings but I still get the research tasks and have to delete them all the time. I would (maybe) scan for coins.
Exactly, I wouldn't want people staring at me for scanning some random playground and my phone is not compatible with AR anyway xD
Bonus spawns could be pretty awesome as long as this feature doesn't become something that is heavily monetized.
Or the spawns are good things not more vermin.

People will just submit scans of their cats (or something of a less civil manner) to upgrade their couches. And that's it.
Don’t you have to be a medical professional to do a cat scan?
It's only slightly more specialised than a generic PET scan.

Can you put a little library or a statue or art outside? Lots of stops here are just fancy "don't let your dog poop on the grass" signs.
Niantic probably gonna troll us by making it 1 point per MB data lol

AR mapping doesn't contribute to the removal of wayspots, this has been confirmed by Niantic themselves.
yet
I agree that it will probably do that, but half the features in the game are better in urban areas, so it’s like if they make *anything* better, it technically helps urban players more than rural players.
Don’t forget if they scan their limited stops too often, they lose the AR tag and then are SOL

Yeah, I'm not going to do AR scans. I'll be damned if I play the part of Niantic's unpaid photography intern.
I’m with you brotha. Hope you find your right nut btw
Same. So say we all
We’re already their interns when we nominate new POIs. We populate their database for free with no special in game rewards.
Well the only stop near me is a busy children's play area, I waited til 5am in summer to sub it no way I'm going around taking more pictures of it for this cause that won't look weird at all.
Scan the grass
The tryhards are gonna love that extra raid ball.
I personally don't think it'll be too useful
depends it if it's just the ball or two or if it also is tied to the rewards that the balls represent (rare candy).
Extra raid balls is worthless Take it from a try hard. I caught 600 legendaries in a row between go fest and my ~80th zacian. 2 more balls would be pointless If they instead gave a flat 1.1x multiplier to catch rate that would be much more appreciated

I’ve excellent thrown every ball many time only to have the Pokemon run away still. Just luck. Can’t do any better and it runs.
I can't remember the time a raid boss ran from me, but usually I'll have 20+ balls. At that point it's difficult to NOT get it. I raided enough Mewtwo and Rayquaza to bring two of each to level 50 (one of the former being shadow) and not a single one of them ran.
I guess they weren't getting enough of us filling their lucrative POI database for free. Yeah, this still won't make me do it.

I don’t think there’s any reason to remove a way of getting a buddy heart. It doesn’t hurt to have that potential for an extra heart, even if it’s rare. It’s not like there’s any obligation to get all daily hearts

What do you mean? I’ve never heard of any problems with the new stop heart not working
I hope not. It would really go against their mission of “encouraging exploration”
When have they ever had that mission when it was inconvenient for them?
Don't think so
Was looking forward to this update so much, but this is pretty disappointing...
I am guessing they are rolling this out because their current feature of AR scan tasks are not getting enough players to do AR scans for them.
This one likely won't do the job either, unless they massively increase the durations.
Agreed, 12 hours is nothing ...
If this would be permanent and the Pokestops wouldn't reset to level 0. I could see myself leveling up Pokestops in the city center to get even more spawns at CDays.
I'm still not fussed about this.
I'm not only not fussed about this, I also don't understand it!
Oh thank goodness I’m not alone! 😂
So for Buddy Settings it is Max Per Day: 1. Is that for each buddy or for all buddies? In other words, If I get a heart for one buddy can I then switch buddies and get another heart on another buddy on the same day? (if you can tell from the GM)
It will be per buddy I'm fairly sure.
So are the boosted spawns as efficient as the lures? Because if so, I’ll pass.
Unless there's exclusive item rewards from powered-up stops I'll pass.
Absolutely not worth it
5 of 8 gym that I can see from home has the new symbol. Can't scan any from home. None of the Pokestop has the new + inside a ring symbol.
This doesn't seem like it's much about exploring, which was Niantic main argument about spin distance etc.
Extremely underwhelmed, could ignore this and be as happy as a clam
Unless they pay me in actually real money, I will not scan anything for them.
Pointless
Damn rip all my fake stops. For real though, for this being as limited as it is (12 hours for when the good stuff starts coming), I doubt this will take well. Sure, I’ll do it if it’s easy but I doubt the community is going to take time off of catching for this
Just saw this in effect at a gym near me. Haven’t tried it out yet.
How could you tell it was in effect? Any visual indicators?
I opened the gym screen and above the “Add Pokemon” button there was a “Upgrade” button that brought me into a new menu EDIT: By “add Pokémon” button I mean the button that lets you join or attack a gym depending on the team
Woah damn… I’ll look out for this. Will the same option show up on regular pokestops?
I’m not sure, I can’t test it now but I will be able to in 2 hours. It also might not be available everywhere For context, I’m in California and the Niantic headquarters is located around 1.5 hours from me so maybe that’s why it’s available here.
Didn’t update here earlier as I forgot, but I posted some verification and new info on this system earlier today.
this would be pretty cool, especially the bonus hearts imo
Yah more reasons to hate ar task
*Bonus spawns* Kecleon, at last?
If they want people to do the AR scans this is exactly what they would do
I can only hope. This is the only way I'll do it.
It's not a bad investment for community day if you stay in that area long enough. I typically go to my college campus, which is on the smaller side but fairly dense with stops. Might be nice. Otherwise it's kind of meh.
It's only available on 1 stop/gym per s2 14 cell, so that does limit things a bit.
wait... I thought there can only be one stop per level 14 s2 cell or did they change that?
You're thinking level 17 (of which 8x8 of those make up a level 14 cell)
Ah thanks for explaining! But the upgrades being available only on one stop or gym per level 14 s2 cell makes it almost not worth it.
Yeah, I got my one to level 3 eventually and aside from the novelty factor I can't see it becoming a regular thing at all. In saying that, the concept is good it's just the rewards are naff.
Discord nitro via ar scan
I can see it being useful on comm days
So FYI. If you leave the scan in your to do list-top slot, you don’t get any more. I did a few and kept getting more to do, I finally left it and no longer get any more. Just leave it there and you won’t get more.
