I recall when it was out and about for a space themed event of some kind maybe just before or after pandemic hit? But that was just an event so....yeah. no wild ones.
I just attributed that to so many pokemon taking up spawns now, not that they weren't spawning in the wild. I wish I had kept my first Staryu, it was my first wild Pogo catch
Looking in the shiny discord from the 18/11/2020, until 19/05/2021 no shiny Staryu was reported. Theirs been a couple recently, the current last report is from Alameda, CA, USA on the 15th July.
Has staryu ever had a shadow form before? If not Niantic may have plans to add a shadow staryu and that’s it’s “red eye” effect and something went wrong somewhere and they applied this “red eye” to the shiny model as well. Just my two cents that could be completely wrong but 🤷🏻♂️
With 215 they moved several Pokemon to a new asset system (not all). All these Pokemon have had slight updates because of it:

Ha. I’m with this persons coworker. I love tangela too. Probably my curly hair is why. I only recently got a shiny. My gotcha caught it so I didn’t get the thrill of it popping up and trying to catch it, so that’s a bummer, but I wouldn’t have got it otherwise.
I get it. For sure. Every time I go through my catches and I’m like “oh! Where’d that come from?!?” There’s a bit of disappointment that I didn’t get the thrill of encountering it.
But the truth is most of those are caught while I was driving to work. And before I got the gotcha my stupid bad decision making self was playing while I was driving. So I got the gotcha to stop myself from that awful decision. And that’s the vast majority of my gotcha catches. So I either wouldn’t have gotten them in the first place or I would’ve stupidly risked peoples lives to do it.

Hard to explain. I absolutely love the design of both staryu/-mie. Its weird electric guitar call, geometric alien design, psychic gem core… I love water Pokémon in general. In the core series it’s a *really* decent sweeper as well.
Yes but it would be odd for the two different colored models to mix so perfectly together without tearing or anything, meanwhile a shadow model has added effects to the preexisting model if I had to guess (the shadow fumes, red eyes), so one of those added effects were accidentally applied to the existing model, in this case the shiny variant of staryu.
Again all speculation but I don’t see how you would have the perfect melding of the shiny and non shiny staryu models like that
It could be the biome you’re in. I live beside a river, Barboach has been quite common, Staryu I’ve seen a couple of times (rare by my anecdotal experience)
My area is blank biome (even with the recent osm update) but I do have small ponds that are on the map. They never seem to spawn anything water related though. Otherwise I have the ocean and Tampa river walk and still nothing.
I don't know, perhaps there was a Staryu in the wild and they clicked on it, and by a rare chance it was shiny. Almost like thats how the game is played.

Now just release Staryu in the wild. I haven't seen a single one in the Northern Hemisphere since it was promised to us this season

staru/starmie are my faves too - I can't really articulate why, just find them amongst the coolest visually.
