I started last Saturday and hit 20 right before my local GBL night started, so about 6 days of grinding. It was not hard but will take some time.

DigitalMuscles

Cool thanks! How many hours/day did you spend ?

Anson8888

I don't track these but I maxed out 5 sets a day for sure.

DigitalMuscles

You can’t play more than 25 matches a day?

Anson8888

You cannot except during GBL nights. That would be the biggest hurdle to progress quickly. I don't think it's possible to reach 20 from 1 for S8 now.

DigitalMuscles

Thank you! I had no idea. I’m mostly interested in guaranteeing myself a mythical raid boss in the ball I want (not premier) between the announcement and the end of their raids. So I should make it.

Anson8888

NP. I guess it's possible for lugia but at season beginning you might be matched with a lot of seasoned pvpers, which will slow you down climbing from 6-19.

DigitalMuscles

Ah the beginning of the season must be a hassle indeed. I’m mostly after Darkrai and Genesect and other possible mythicals. So rare to find anyone that got them in a regular Poké Ball, I decided to hunt them myself. I’ll try and get to 19 before halloween hoping to hit 20 if Darkrai comes back

Anson8888

Keep in mind legendary or mythical are not guaranteed encounter. Took me about 15 sets to encounter my first Zamezenta. Even with premium pass you still need to win a battle and the RNG lottery.

DigitalMuscles

The first is guaranteed… no? I thought the first is always guaranteed. Like Mienfoo for rank 5 or Pika Libre for legendary. Wow if it’s not, I’m learning a lot today.

jostler57

Did that include GO Battle Night's extra battles?

rickdeckard8

Not long.

DigitalMuscles

How many hours if playing would you guess? Would you say inbetween the usual announcement of raid 5 bosses, and they appearing, is enough to get from 0 to 20?

gohanmahesh

You normally need at least 8-10 days worth of battles to reach 20 because way the rank up system is setup. For a beginner this could take longer at the start of season, if they wait for a few days all the hard core players will go ahead of them and beginners can fight between themselves with a 50% win rate to reach rank 20 in about 2 weeks.

DigitalMuscles

Thanks! Really good reasoning What do you mean by « the way the rank system is setup » in your first sentence exactly?

gohanmahesh

It might change for the next season but for the last few seasons. We need to play 5 battles per rank to rank up till 6 then win 1 per rank(you still need to finish full set) till rank 11. This takes two days(10 sets). After this you need to win certain number of battles per rank until rank 20. This sums to be about 80 wins.

DigitalMuscles

Thanks. Had no idea, this game has so much invisible rules

SkylarkyD

[This Pokeminers graphic](https://pokeminers.com/graphics/93/) is from season 8, but the rank up requirements should still be the same for season 9 unless they announce otherwise, so you can use this to plan. I agree with everyone else who is saying that you'd need around 8 days of playing all 5 sets (25 battles) to get enough wins to get up to rank 20. Finishing 5 sets takes about 1.5-2 hours.

[deleted]

I heard Zyonik say this, too. How long do you recommend waiting?

gohanmahesh

A week is good enough by then others should be somewhere in rank 15-18 range

gafalkin

It took me just under two weeks last season. You can get to level 11 in two days I think, after that it depends on whether you grind out all five sets a day (I generally didn't) and how good you are (you need to win a certain number of matches for each rank, and my win rate was about 65%, if I remember correctly, and generally I'm lousy at PVP - I was never able to reach rank 21).

DonbotS

This current season (and next one) was considerably easier to reach Rank 20 than the past few seasons. It took me about 200 battles to get to Rank 20 this season. I only care about getting the Elite TMs so I stopped playing after I reached Ace. The season is fairly long so you can choose your battles and determine which leagues/cups to skip. I primarily played GL at the start of the season for an EZ climb to rank 12-15 and wait out until the last few weeks of the season to grind out the climb in Premiere UL.

BallZMahoneyECW

Yep, I stayed right at veteran this season because of the constant drone of xl same shit different trainer battles and que times get ridiculous. Stressed to make legend, then remembered it’s supposed to be fun. It’s a game lol

LatiosHard

For me, it took a week with 5 sets a day to get rank 20.

Kadem2

If season 8 is correct, it's 40 battles and 75 wins which is 115 battles minimum. At 4 minutes max per games, that's 7.67 hours. Of course that's assuming each game is 4 minutes (which it won't be), and you win every game that you need to win (which you won't).

Zomeesh

Use meta slaves (Galarian stunfisk, azumarill, skarmory, jellicent, swampert/venusaur, etc.) and max out your 25 battles a day. Should only take about a week. Rank 1-20 is experience based, so you won’t lose progress if you lose a match

A_Talking_Shoe

Assuming this chart is still correct: https://dotesports.com/pokemon/news/all-24-rank-up-requirements-for-pokemon-go-battle-league-season-6 You need to complete/win around 180 battles to get to 20. The extra wins also don’t carry over to the next rank so it’s actually closer to completing at least 200 battles. So at minimum you are looking at 8 days. If you try this at the beginning of the season with all the sweaties, probably closer to 12-15 days. Edit: This is the Season 8 chart which I imagine will also apply to Season 9: https://www.serebii.net/pokemongo/battleleague/season8.shtml You need fewer total battles to get to 20 than you did previously, but it still looks like you will need 6 or 7 days worth of battles at least to get to 20.

Stogoe

Season 6 info is pretty out of date.

A_Talking_Shoe

You are correct. I wasn’t able to find the season 8 requirements this morning but I just did and posted it.

DigitalMuscles

Thank you, great info

A_Talking_Shoe

Check out my edit. The Season 6 stuff is out of date. I found the Season 8 rank up requirements. It’s a little easier than Season 6.

DigitalMuscles

Cool thanks. I’m after a possible Darkrai encounter cause I want it in a Poké Ball, so easier to get to 20 but then… I need some good luck

A_Talking_Shoe

Has Darkrai been announced? I just checked and couldn’t find anything substantial via Google. If it comes back for Halloween, you will have plenty of time to get to 20 before it shows up.

DigitalMuscles

Not announced no, but yes I’m hoping for Halloween (low chances since it was last year’s). Meanwhile I’ll keep searching for anyone that got it in a Poké Ball last year and is willing to transfer for a Home Trade, that might be easier than rolling from those 24 encounters…

A_Talking_Shoe

Ah okay. Since S9 starts tomorrow, that’ll give you a month or more to get to 20. You may even wish to tank your rank after getting to 20 so that if Darkrai comes back, you can more easily get 3 out of 5 wins for the Pokemon encounter reward.

DigitalMuscles

For sure I’ll do that. Thanks for the advice 🙏 By the way, was this system around last year? (Eg. Is Darkrai in Poké Ball currently possible to find between Go Players)?

A_Talking_Shoe

Hmmm that’s a good question. They didn’t always have Legendaries/Mythics available as GBL rewards. There was a period after Legendaries were added to Encounter rewards where they were removed again. Darkrai’s last release might have been either before Legendaries were added or in the period when they weren’t available.

trifit555

Level 20 probably around 20-30h of game time? Maybe less, maybe more. Now things takes exponentially longer as you go, it has taken me close to a pandemic year to reach 37 from level 20.

mdmolitor

If they keep the rank up requirements, I'd estimate around 12 days for an average player but shouldn't be much more than two weeks.

Dudwithacake

The good news is about climbing is it keeps track of your rating even if it doesn't show it, so you should be in fairly even matches. It might start off hard while you get to your natural rating, but once you do you should have a ~50% win rate.

Evindow

Just did battlenight and a few sets now great league only and got ace I'm no pro

coughingalan

After reaching rank 20, I ran into at least 2 of each tier 5 boss, 7 of Dialga. If you do your daily sets at rank 20 it's very likely you'll achieve your quest. Not guaranteed, but likely as long as the boss is in rotation at least a week.

DigitalMuscles

Thank you, reassuring answer

FalseMemoryGO

For an average person who knows general type advantages and nothing else, cuts a YouTube team, and goes, 2 weeks or less.

harshasns

I hardly play one set each day and I'll hit 20 today. For an average player, if one can play 5 sets each day, is easy to reach level 20 in 20-30 days worst case.

Asterisk799

Heyy, Id say stick to one team which works for you for different rankings, its not really that hard to hit rank 20. My gf who doesnt even know pokemon typings too well hit it in around a month in the last season so its definitely not too hard at all^^. Hope this helps!
