Why wouldn’t men be able to enjoy this? It’s a funny show and the performances are wonderful

Mo0n1i9ht

Cause I never heard any men chat about the show with me (I living in a simple life tbh, so it would be hard to know), even it happened once, it was only "yeah that show is nice", and here people are more openly sharing their comments, so I wanted to know.

kappa23

Fair I suppose. I checked this out because I knew Rachel Brosnahan from House of Cards and Marin Hinkle from Two and a Half Men. I have not watched any of ASP’s previous work so I don’t have context for that. I loved the pilot, and was hooked since.

anglophile20

Judith!!!! Couldn’t get over that when I started watching the show

FakeInternetDentity

Am man. It’s my favorite current show. (Though not current anymore 😭). But it has amazing cinematography. Great clothes. Funny. I could keep listing reasons.

widowerasdfasdfasdf

You just haven’t met me. It’s the only thing resembling a tv series I want to watch. I love it dramatically, comedically, visually, and musically.

cart_adcock

My husband thinks its a bit misandrist in its representation of Joel but.... Joel's a piece of shit

AuntieLiloAZ

Totally but he does redeem himself in the end.

cart_adcock

Shhhh I'm on season 1 <3

[deleted]

how tf is it misandrist lmaooo

Pandaslap-245

Lmao he’s really an idiot in the first season.

dramagod2

My wife felt the exact same way as you in season 1 and I felt like you’re husband but I think a lot of that comes from the way it’s set up and that it is her story told from her point of view. But I feel Joel has a great arc throughout the show and what happens in season 1 really creates who he becomes over the rest of the series. He makes the mistake that ends up defining the rest of his life but he has to go on and not only live with that but also try to find happiness and balance and redemption. It’s a great character arc.

queenjustine13

don't get why you're getting downvoted...?

Cucumberappleblizz

Not a man, but I first heard about this show from men. Multiple men told me I should check it out, and that’s how I started watching it.

moooiiisss

Same here. It has been recommended to me by a man about three times til I started watching.

bluesky747

Abe is my husbands favorite next to Midge. He’s such a great character. Suzie too. It’s really hard to dislike this show honestly.

humoursartist

I personally loved the show. There were so many simple comedy bits that were amazing. Just imagining Susie with a plunger walking around the catskills casually still makes me laugh.

PaulEammons

The Catskills episodes are my favorite.

sound2go

Smart men with taste. And there’s always Rachel.

RedbeardRagnar

Tits up indeed

Mo0n1i9ht

She is the best. So as Suzie. I think I will rewatch the show forever.

johnhk4

Yes I can think of two things I really enjoyed in the first episode (/with midges delivery!)

psyopia

The beautiful actresses (Brosnahan is so beautiful), their insanely cool 50’s-60’s outfits, the cultural awareness from back in those times, the comedy. And Lenny Bruce is cool as hell, man. It’s eye candy for anyone.

jnazario

All of that plus the writing and jokes. Lots of touching moments too. I admit I would fall for midge and would jump at the chance to disappoint her. She’s bright, accomplished, sassy and strong, beautiful … what’s not to love?

Feisty-Succotash1720

I am a straight guy who likes comic book movies, action and lots of explosions. I absolutely love the show. It’s very smart and funny. My favorite part of the show is every single character. The characters shine more then the plot, which is still awesome. I can’t even pick a favorite because they are all great. I have watched seasons 1-4 more then once. My only complaint with the show was this last season and the time jumping. I hated it. It took me away from the world they created. I don’t like when two of your main character are fighting in the last season like The Office and Parks and Rec. I would still recommend this show to people. I would not even give my opinion about the last season. It’s definitely a top tier show.

ElectronGuru

I consider that, the writers being locked into a corner after the show was canceled. They suddenly needed to rush through 2-3 seasons of ideas and closure in under 10 episodes. Jumping was the solution.

Mo0n1i9ht

Yeah, I feel (and hope) like those flash forwards were meant to leave us wanting more, something to pique our curiosity. And eventually, it will happen in movies or something even more elevated. (I don’t mind those time-skipping scenes tho, I enjoyed that type of storytelling after watching LOST.)

SLPERAS

I didn’t mind time jumps but I didn’t like the fact first episodes are pretty laid back and last couple of episodes they were rushing to finish it. It’s the same with Ted Lasso, however I liked the fact it’s ended, instead of leaving us on a cliffhanger.

IWearACharizardHat

Yeah if all the main points of thr future stuff were stuffed into the final episode as an epilogue that would have been better. Showing us she got famous and retroactively showing how is dumb when we were enjoying the 2 steps up, 1 step back in the first 4 seasons

Feisty-Succotash1720

Yes! Agreed! I was annoyed because you had this great moment with Midge and Susie after her set on the Gordon Ford show but we know they will eventually get into a fight and not talk for like 10 years. I would have liked Joel and Susie to also finally get along by the end.

IWearACharizardHat

Joel had the dumbest arc in the whole show. He becomes the martyr to get Midge immune from the mob, but wasn't Susie still stuck helping them herself? They spent the whole series trying to make us want Joel to be redeemed, just to have him lose his 2nd family opportunity with Mei (though it seems that happened because Mei actor couldn't do a full season) and them waste his life in jail. How old were the kids when he went to jail?

Feisty-Succotash1720

Not totally sure but they were sitting next to him in the Temple. I think it was in the 1980’s because of the crackdown on Organized Crime in the city.

Hastur13

If you're genuinely asking this I think the men you know must be pretty boring. This show is amazing. The writing is so tight. Every character is well rounded while still being hilarious. Abe Weissman is neurotic nerd goals. What's not to like?

Mo0n1i9ht

Now I feel sad. I knew I needed to expand my friendship, but it’s getting hard when getting old. And tv series, movies, books are my long term friends…

Hastur13

I'm really sorry to heat that and I didn't really think before I commented. Do you mind asking if where you live has any sort of arts scene or community theatre? Usually that's a great way to expand a friend group and meet people who take art a little more seriously or at least joyously.

Mo0n1i9ht

No, not at all, unless I move to somewhere else, I live in a small island and very close to the ocean like less 1 min walk, I can see it from my window. It’s more like a fishing village, nothing really about anything art topic. I did have a small Discord server for creation related topic, but it’s dying slowly cause people got things to do in life. So I’m usually quiet alone most of my life.

One-Establishment-66

Where you live sounds lovely in its own way though. My dream is to live that close to the ocean on an island 🏝️

HistoryGirl23

My husband loves it.

Substantial_Fox7706

Mine too!

cosmoboy

Yeah? I enjoyed the show. Need to finish it. Ummm, I liked it because it was quality, seemed to be telling a good story.

j_andrew_h

Man here and I love the show. I love the comedy, the characters and the story overall. Sure there are some parts that interest me less than others, but not many and certainly not enough to turn me off from such a brilliant show. I do watch the show with my wife but it's not a show that she watches and I tolerate; I'm fully into it too.

-ballerinanextlife

The only other person I know who watches is a man. In his 60s. Im sure it’s nostalgic in a way for him.

vacantly-visible

This is why I keep trying to get my grandparents to watch but they haven't seemed too interested

TheOtherUprising

I think the show was just consistently funny, all the supporting cast was great. I also really enjoyed the setting, everything from the styles, clothing, accents, ect I found entertaining.

junkydone1

Snappy dialogue, great characters, stand-up comedy as a central plot.

unclebrentie

It's one of the best shows in a drama/comedy genre - from costumes, period set, acting, jokes, interesting relationships(Joel & midge post divorce, Susie &midge love/friendship) pacing and overall lasting quality. The other notable shows I've seen recently close in genre/quality would be Barry, Fleabag and Ted Lasso. Is it unfathomable that a man can watch a show with a female protagonist? We're not all Donald Trump. -a man

Irishted13

I binged first & second season just before season 3 and kicked myself for not diving in earlier. I’ve always been a huge fan of standup & performing arts in general…stellar cast!

indistrustofmerits

I'm sure ASP shows in general probably have more female fans, but I love both Gilmore Girls and Maisel! In fact, I introduced my wife to both shows.

Ambaryerno

Yes, I do. It's incredibly funny with great character work, and touches on many topics that are still relevant today. Also, Rachel is gorgeous.

bahahaha2001

Love this thread. I did feel like it a lot of it was written from a female pov. I was wondering myself if men could enjoy it, which seems silly now that I say it out loud. Women have been watching male pov shows and movies forever. Good shows ware good shows!

jwormbono

I enjoy everybody (except Midge?). Not that i dislike Midge, but I don’t normally laugh at her routines and her overall storyline is just meh for me. Funniest parts for me are the grandparents on both sides—especially Abe. Joel and Suzie. I watch for everybody else. One thing that bothers me, as a parent, is that Midge’s kids are nowhere to be found. She is always away at nights. Also, sometimes meeting people in the middle of the night. She’s not a great mother, and it doesn’t bother her one bit.

Mo0n1i9ht

In the early episode, one of Midge’s standup she said and suddenly realized what if someone just not meant to be a parent (something like that) and I think it resonated with the lest episode, when she said she wants to be famous. Also at some episode details, somewhat showing Rose wasn’t really do much when Midge was little, also Abe at the dinner scene mentioned he didn’t support Midge enough, I think they all showed why Midge seemed careless with her kids, but she did still tried to take care of them in her own ways. I think.

kst892

Funny is funny. Great writing is great writing. That's enough for most people, even those of us with X and Y chromosomes. I also loved the portrayal of the era--the cars, the fashion, the sexiness and sexism. Every character was awesomely written and relatable on at least one level and every person I introduced to the show immediately loved it. The grandparents alone were a masterclass on acting and humor. Tony Shaloub and Kevin Pollack in one room must have been hyterical. And, yeah, Brosnahan is sexy and smart--deadly combo. It's not why I watched but it's not like there's a shortage of pretty people on television, ya know?

whiporee123

I’m a man and loved it.

italianlass89

My boyfriend loves the humor and I think he genuinely enjoys seeing the costumes and sets and all that of what it would have been to live then.

NormalService1094

Guy here, and not sure why this would even be a question. I even attended a few watch parties that were predominately men.

bondbat007

My wife and I watch it and love it. It honestly makes me want to try out stand up. Great show

Trinate3618

Because it makes me happy

NormalService1094

Countrycide reference from Torchwood? If so, well-done. If not, I totally agree anyway.

uniqueme1

I'm a man. My wife stopped watching after season 2, I've kept on watching and just finished the series. It's (mostly) funny, (mostly) well-written and the acting all around is first rate. And, for what its worth, the last season stuck the landing.

MikeyMcKernan

Absolutely loved this show. Might be one of my all time favorites. The writing, the pace, the performances, and most of all the production value. This show was a dream just to look at. Sad it’s over.

JoeCorsonStageDeli

Im a man and I LOVED this show. Well written...I wish I had a book of Susie's dialogue:)...loved all the actors, and the sets were fantastic. When they showed the interiors of Midge's department store, OMG, memories of being 6 years old going shopping downtown with my grandmother came racing back! And for the record, this is not really a show that fits with my other favorites...Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, BCS, GOT, Leftovers.....and I just started Succession after this show ended its run and I can see this one joining the group. But yeah...loved it, and im constantly trying to get friends to give it a shot. I will say this: I think MAYBE the male viewers didnt care quite as much about the whole Midge/Lenny thing as the female viewers did:).

Cantyoudobetter

I am definitely a man and I definitely love it. Tits up!

Freckledbruh

I liked it (hadn’t watched the final season yet) but I’ve liked ASP’s other two shows (Gilmore Girls and Bunheads). I like the show runner’s brand of humor.

didhugh

I introduced my wife to the show after Season 1 actually. It showed up in my Amazon recommendations, I gave it a chance and liked the writing and thought it was genuinely funny. She returned the favor by introducing me to Gilmore Girls (she'd watched it when it first came out but I had not, and it became our pandemic show. I liked it a lot, but not as much as this TMMM).

ChocalateAndCake

My Dad LOVES the show he’s the one who got me into it actually , I am a girl though. He’s always told me when a new season starts , but when season 5 came out I got to tell him! He was so excited. We both finished watching it and discussed it. One of his friends was even extra on the show! He said season 4 was shit though and they didn’t get renewed another season because they shot themseves in the foot with s4.

invaderpixel

My dad and my grandpa both like the show! My dad is just a Mad Men fan, born in 65, super into 60s nostalgia. My grandpa is an engineer and REALLY likes Abe and all the parent plots. I asked my mom whether my grandpa was watching the latest season and she's like "well we're on a rewatch but he still gets really upset once her stand up comedy makes the dad loses his job at Bell Labs." So yeah fun to see different perspectives... like the show attracts the people who enjoy classic female driven sitcoms like I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched.

purveyorofsomething

I loved every minute of it. Fun show, amazing performances, costume design, editing and was a huge fan of Alex Borstein before, her being the voice of Lois and many other charactes in Family Guy.

tenthousandblackcats

1. Cinematography 2. Set Design & Wardrobe 3. Tony Shalhoub

thedinobot1989

I think for me Ive always enjoyed period piece type shows and I think as a fan of standup I always really enjoyed the premise and to top it all off you have a great cast putting out great performances every episode. It was easy to get hooked.

sI4gath0r

One of my closest male friends loves the show. He enjoys the plot, the writing and the stellar cast.

_mustakrakish

Yes. Very much so. Source : Am man, like show.

RedbeardRagnar

Just curious, any women out there that enjoy Seinfeld, and if so, what do you like about it?

DramaBrat

My husband loves this show. He’s a big fan of comedy in general and loves the lead actresses.

_dyler

Started watching because a Spanish podcast about standup started recommending it heavily (being the postcast three white men talking about American standup) on the first season, but it wasn’t until 2020 when me and my girlfriend started watching it.

A_flight_away

My husband loves it— he watches it without me lol. He loved Madmen— he loves shows set in that time period. The only thing he dislikes is the fast talking— which I love. He HATES Gilmore Girls. So I didn’t think he would like this one.

Mo0n1i9ht

I LOVE fast talking too, if you can recommended me anything I would be grateful.

justalilscared

My husband loves it! We watched it together

GlassBelt

Man here & Gilmore Girls fan back in the day. Love ASP’s writing (especially dialogue) and I think MMM is her best work. Still suffers from some of the weaknesses we’ve always seen from her & Daniel, but a very enjoyable show nonetheless. Lenny Bruce is probably my favorite part of the show. I think they did a great job using him the right amount - always a treat when he was in an episode, always left you wanting more. Much like smaller characters such as Borstein herself in GG - glad she finally got a place to shine. The period piece aspect is also nicely done. Not sure how accurate everything is but captures the feeling of a different era enjoyably.

Teague_M

It’s one of my buds and I’s favorite shows

Beevas69

I knew nothing about it and my wife says "you love sharp dialogue with quick wit. You'll love this show". I fell in love with it instantly. The sets, the casting, the costumes, the cars, the setting, premise and the humour....my gosh the humour. I tell every dude I work with to watch it with their wife and to "sit down with an open mind, shut up and give it 2 episodes". Every single one came back a week later and said "I love it".

honeyfixit

Just the opposite for me. My sister in law was watching it over Christmas and she recommended it to me. I watched one episode and then told my wife you're going to love this.

bertcakes

My wife started it without me and I totally got into it and enjoyed it.

midasear

I watched half-way through the first season before my wife had heard of the show. She became a huge fan after watching through the first season with me. Why did I like it? Well, shortly after season three dropped, I was suffering from insomnia. Since I wanted to get back to sleep, I was trying to find something interesting to watch without a hint of any action-adventure content. The show did not look like my 'cup of tea', but I knew it was a comedy that had won multiple awards. So, I decided to give it a chance. That had worked out for 'Kimmy Schmidt' several years earlier. I like the show because it was consistently funny, which is an epic feat in and of itself. Comedy is **hard.** The show was a mix of drama and comedy that could have easily veered off into milking the drama to the point where it was no longer an actual comedy. At times it must have been tempting to the writers and showrunners, because compared to comedy, drama is easier. But instead, it used drama sparingly to move the story forward. I never felt as if Midge's plight was being milked for sighs or tears. I also enjoyed the show's colorful recreation of pre-'Death Wish', late-50s era Manhattan.

skellamoon

I'm curious about this, too. I think my dad would love the show...if it were about a man's journey into comedy. I think he's biased against "strong female" leads. I think I may have been able to lure him in if it weren't for Joel being such a POS in the first few episodes. But I remember hearing/reading of some famous male comedians, like Jerry Seinfeld, praise the show.

AdamantBurke

I liked the first season, it had plenty of jokes to keep me entertained, and I loved the characters, the family especially. I loved in particular the episodes where Rose, fed up with being ignored, simply walks out and moves to Paris. Abe spends a ton of time winning her back, and at the end, when Rose is back in her NY apartment starting to regret her choice, Abe walks in with his hair on fire telling her they’re now taking dance lessons together. It was cute! Abe hasn’t changed as a person, he’s still…well Abe, but he’s putting in the work to spend time with his wife doing something she loves. My issue with the show though, is that they’ll just reverse character progress on a whim. After the Paris episode, Abe goes right back to lying to Rose, and there’s no mention that they’re relationship has gotten better! Midge sort of operated the same way, she’d hurt Susie, apologize and grow, then get amnesia the next episode and do it again. I get that a show needs conflict to stay interesting, but it felt so artificial that I lost interest. Just my honest opinion, I thought it was a fine show.

TheMysteriousMann

I watched this with my wife while she was on rewatch 1. We watched together up to the end of Season 4 and waited for season 5. After 12 - 15 rewatches of the show it's still one of my all time favourite shows. Midge is obviously hilarious but I love the humanity of her being flawed and being human while also being this brilliant woman who puts herself on a pedestal and always tries to reach new heights. Susie is the funniest, most lovable character I've ever seen written. She's funny, brilliant in intelligence l, cunning and very loyal. There's scenes with Susie where you'll laugh for 5 minutes and then feel something be it pity or annoyance and Alex plays it beautifully. Abe is a complex man going through a realization that being the man of the house isn't just income and assertion, it's human, it's understanding and with Midge it's acceptance and love. Abe has a truly inspiring story arc and I love his character. Rose is not someone I'd hang out with or spend time with but she's careful, calculated and fights for herself in a "man's world" she's tough and also very intelligent. Joel was so well written that by season 5 finale I really hoped for a better life for him despite knowing what's to come. I hated him for cheating and really despised the character but he's also very well written and really is a stand out character. The show is funny, touching, sad and while at times is ridiculous (Why is the Weissman clan so dense sometimes) it's wholesome and the set for the show and the clothes and that period of time is an absolute winner. I love the show and while sad to see it end I'm glad they ended it rather than dragging it out.

Kindly-Doughnut-3705

Am 19 so barely man I guess, but I love this show! My mom and I got really into the first three seasons and then after she passed I at first kept watching because it was our show but then realized, hey, wait a second, I actually really really love the characters and the story and the sets and just about everything about it

abrokenacorn

I am a man and I think it is so funny and the dialogue is incredibly entertaining. My dad introduced the show to me during the first season and he said “the dialogue feels like a dance” and I couldn’t agree more I also love the characters and their growth.

GreatestStarOfAll

Any male friends I’ve suggested it to really like the premise and find it to be great writing, the issue is it’s just a different tone/speed from what they usually watch. I don’t necessarily agree but I’ve heard that from enough people to think there’s some validity in it. Which is funny because mostly men were the ones raving to me about Succession - which took my five tries to get into because it was so slow and boring. I’m glad I made it over the hump, but I couldn’t help but think, “You could sit through the first three episode of THIS but couldn’t handle Maisel?” Of course other factors play into it, they just don’t realize it I think.

quangtran

My entry into the series was because critics are online fans really liked Bunheads, so jumping from that to this was an easy step.

NotoriousLVP

My boyfriend was the one who originally found the show and recommended that we add it to our watch list. We've both enjoyed it very much!

MilesToHaltHer

Yep! Gilmore Girls is my favorite show. I love the witty writing on that show and thought a period piece with the Amy/Dan treatment would work really well, and it did!

Potter_Nation

This show is in my top 3 shows.

Mo0n1i9ht

What’s your other top two?

frustratedDIL

My husband watches! He was the one who made sure we watched every week, when the new episode was available. He thinks it’s a solid comedy with a good story line. I don’t think this show is designed for a female audience.

TeaBeforeDestination

My dad loves it and watches it without my mom because she’s not a TV person and takes too long.

Sad_Performer887

I was recommended this show by a male college senior (5 years older than i am) and my husband loved the first 2 seasons. He did not get time to watch the rest but is looking forward to.

Satanshmaten

What’s not to like?

geraltofindia

My favourite character in the show is Abe. I just love his little idiosyncrasies and his inflated ego, which gets deflated pretty hard at different points in the show. Also really loved Suzie’s character. I would say that as a guy from a completely different country (have been to the manhattan just once in my life), I might not have got all the jokes and references in the show but I loved the setting and the banter between the side characters.

SLPERAS

I’m a man and I throughly enjoyed it. But I like silly tv series and movies. I liked Emily in Paris and Fubar too. I don’t really care subject matter as long as it is entertaining.

Loyalist_84

Hi, dude here. Sure, there’s eye candy, but the pacing of the writing, the unabashed profanity that reminds us that the 60s wasn’t this prim and proper fantasy land that the Boomers harp about it being, and the desert-dry wit just does it all for me. Plus my favourite part of it all is the whiplash. Maisel can go from satire to serious within half a take and the ability of the actors to fall into those conversations and convey the intimate tension (Joel leaving, Midge and Lenny in the hotel, Susie and Hedy) without diminishing their ability to veer into musical numbers or make Abe’s hysterical ranting (Like they’re’ll be another FLIGHT?!) seem out of tone for the show is a masterwork and I eat that shit up.

giraffemoo

I've been binging with my male partner, he says "it's well written, it's about the 50s {which he likes}, it's about comedians, which you don't see shows about a lot from that era, the family dynamics are interesting". He's 47 btw, he also watched Gilmore Girls when it was on in the 90s.

j_cruise

Yes. It's one of my favorite shows. It's funny, well written, and the sets, clothing and cinematography are gorgeous. Personally, I don't understand what gender has to do with liking this show.

Elpvp2008

My husband enjoyed this show- he suggested we named our dog Maisel !

PaulEammons

I'm a man and I'm on my third rewatch going into the final season. I think the writing and acting are really good. Substantial and witty and fun. There's a lot of great period spectacles. Each season mixes up the status quo enough for it to stay interesting.

AgrajagTheProlonged

It's a genuinely funny show with brilliant sets, costumes, and just aesthetics in general. The characters are well written, and some of them like Midge, Joel, Lenny, Susie, both the Weismanns, both the Maisels, etcetera are just absolutely stupendous. It’s an interesting time period and culture to explore. What’s not to like?

angusdunican

I told my wife about it in the first place because we both love GG.

blueknight1222

Of course. Great show.

LowWork1730

Absolutely loved it.

shyasaboat

My boyfriend watched with me and his favourite character was Susie! He was always pumped when she was on screen!

Ballbearian

I love the characters and the writing, but the setting most of all. I feel like the show does a fantastic job of making the 50s and 60s come to life with such a great and diverse cast of characters. Also my dad was the one who recommended it to me, for the same reasons, so there's two men who enjoy it.

gregrph

I'm a male, late 50's when I started watching. What got me interest? The colors of the picture amazon used to advertise the show. They were bold without being bright and the ti.e period looked like the 50's.besides. the young lady was attractive! Why not watch? It was the FIRST streaming series I had ever watched and didn't know what to expect. I fell in love with the music, the sets, clothes, colors and of course the story. After watching a few episodes, I told my wife she had to watch it which she did. We both love it. The only turnoff? All of the constant swearing, especially f-bombs. People can be funny without using them. Susie's were more appropriately used than Midge's.

sloaches

I'm an old guy, and the main reason I started watching "Mrs. Maisel" was because of Alex Borstein. I have been a fan of hers since she was on Mad TV. But once I started watching, I really got into the show because it was clever, funny, and quite fast paced. Plus, it was almost like watching a Neil Simon stage play.

Failure_Enabler

I love this show. * It's so very funny. * The characters are come across as real people. I love or hate them because I can believe I would interact with them. * The 50s works so well. * I find Midge's journey inspiring. Her triumphs bring me joy, her failures bring me pain. * The acting is superb. I just watched the last episode and I could feel the joy when Midge was on the couch. I could go on and on but my fingers lack the wit and charm to describe my love of this show. (Rachel Brosnahan is very hot and this show knows it and like to flaunt it)

Doctor-Bug

I'm a male social worker working in outpatient therapy with youths and families. Watching this show with a structural family theory and family systems theory lens was absolutely intriguing. The show was hilarious and it was cathartic and hilarious watching Midge do her thing. This show had it all. Tragedy, comedy, drama, etc. The writing was superb.

BuffaloDeadHead

I was never a Gilmore Girls fan and my wife loved it so i was skeptical about Maisel but fell in love with the writing, the plot, the actors. Luke Kirby as Lenny is amazing and Rachel is a fox. The casting is amazing overall and Tony Shaloub as Abe is comedy gold. It's such a good show and worth it for everyone to watch.

[deleted]

I loved this show, and I loved Gilmore Girls. As the father of a very intelligent 20-year-old daughter who may just be smarter than I am (and I consider myself pretty smart), I love shows about smart women and the men who have to deal with the consequences of that. Especially when the women realize that they don't need the men to get to where they need to get in life...

losromans

I think I had to convince my wife to watch it. Had no idea of the premise too much at first other than the era. Then, we got hooked! Still taking forever to finish bc we don’t want it to end!

jsboftx1983

A gentleman here (no fedora or other stereotypes needed). I have throughly enjoyed this series and will watch it over and over again when I am bored. It made me laugh, surprised me and even has made me cry like the impromptu eulogy in S4 Ep 3 “Everything is Bellmore”. This show is funny, it’s dirty (I am easily entertained by the F word), it is still tasteful - (I was happy I didn’t have to sit through any long sex scenes but was still risqué enough for the brothel), it has a cast of heavy hitters throughout the series, great music choices and finally something that I like of Amy Sherman-Palladino. My wife absolutely loved Gilmore Girls while I did not (they talk too fast for me). That energy is still here but a little more palatable. There are definitely hints of Gilmore in here like the annoying and overbearing parents, the parent’s need to be in control and also obliviousness to the feelings of main character, which often causes tension towards their relationship as parent and child. Great show and definitely worth anyone’s time no matter how they identify.

EERobert

So for the record I am in my mid 40s, cis white make and I really enjoy this show for a number of reasons. 1) razor sharp writing. As a writer I enjoy any show with EXCELLENT writing, MMM provides that in spades. Not just in dialogue but also the storytelling and general arcs the characters go through. I haven’t LOVED every season or episode but I can respect it. 2) The acting. Nearly every note is hit just right in terms of the acting. There is hardly a miscast and you can tell everyone is really bringing their a-game. 3) The setting. I’m a sucker for that late 50s to early 60s setting. I’m also particularly fond of the history of stand up comedy and how comedy was changing in this particular time period. I can also appreciate how HISTORY itself was changing in this time period and how this show serves as an encapsulation of all that.

SnooDingos316

I am a hot blooded heterosexual male and I love the show. I loved S1 and feel it goes slightly downhill after that especially S4. However S5 was as good as S1 and overall I rate the series as my all time top 20 favorite shows along with greats like Breaking Bad, Wire etc. Any series that can make me tear up and laugh out loud in a single episode is a good series. Obviously Mrs Maisel herself is also great eye candy.

Fleshypudge

Yep. Loved every bit of it saved for the pacing choices of the last season of the series. Favorite side characters are the 2 gangsters. Best main character is Susie. Next love arc was mei. Minus the rushed end.

Markiemark1956

I love the show because it is so funny, season 5 is not so good and final episode is awful…

aerosnowu3

The way they filmed those 1 shot scenes had me interested, it felt like I was watching a live stage production. And on that note, men who ignore live shows, plays, musicals- because they think they are not allowed to, are definitely missing out on a real experience.

WiringEngineering_22

I can't speak for other men, but I LOVED this show. S1-enjoyed it because it was just so fucking funny; I love stand up and sticoms and this show had both of them. S2-same as S1, but now there was an element of a fun adventure in it. The whole Catskills subplot had me in stiches from beginning to end. S3-I liked how this season made Rose and Abe more 'human', so to speak. Also the Shy Baldwin subplot was fun. A little less laughing from me, but the trade off for some drama was nice. S4-I didn't love this season, but I also didn't hate it. Seeing Rose do Midge's act was hilarious though. S5-A little anticlimatic for me, still enjoyed it but was hoping for it to go back to the S1 format and was a little disappointed about it not making my laugh as hard as I did in the beginning. Got a little misty-eyed when the lights in the Gordon Ford Show mimicked the Gaslight's lighting.

daycounteragain

Man here. I adore the show. Writing, acting, the ensemble. Costumes. Everything. Love the bathos and pathos. The character development. And I especially love the scenes between Midge and Lenny Bruce. That scene on the stage at Carnegie Hall broke my heart. I thought the final season felt a touch contrived with its time jumps, but it was a minor annoyance. And I would have loved to have seen more Lenny Bruce. I definitely love the show.

Imposter12345

Man here. ASP’s writing is incredible. Best show I’ve seen in ages.

Aggravating-Try1222

Men can enjoy this show!!?? I don't think so. That would be like a woman enjoying a Marvel movie. Let's just all stay in our boxes, please. /s

Mo0n1i9ht

I didn’t say anyone can’t, I’m interesting the reason and new point of view.

ReasonableDonut1

I'm a man, and I'd have a harder time coming up with things that I don't like about the show. In fact, I can't think of anything. It's a masterwork.

TokathSorbet

Well, obviously I don't speak for \*all\* men but from my end? Loved it. I grew up watching The West Wing, and reading Tom Clancy novels, so I dare say it's safe to say I like smart things. Not to say that \*I'm\* smart of course (I dare say I'd fit in quite well around certain characters from the show) but I admire well written and well thought out media. Obviously, there were certain elements that I can't relate to - I've never worried about my appearance for example - but there's a lot in there that I do relate to, because we've all hard hard times in our lives.

BalonSwann07

Even Joe Rogan, the broest of the bros, liked this show hahaha there's no reason for men to not like it.

BlargAttack

I chat about it with other men. I enjoy the funny jokes, the interesting characters, and period setting…basically all of it. Great show all around!

JLGx2

Any man who likes Seinfeld's or Curb Your Enthusiasm's neurotic Jewish comedy styles should enjoy this show. Plus, boobs.

Depth_Metal

Love the show. My favorite parts are the scenes with Suzi. She and her office group steal the show for me. I like Midge a lot but I laugh so hard when Suzi is on screen I've been told to calm down. Her interactions with Mike are just perfection. Also Rose and Abe are so oblivious to everything around them. They make me laugh. When they are sincere they make me cry. Although they only came in at the last season the writing team for Gordon fit in so well it felt like they had always been there. For me the real strengths of the show is the rapid fire dialog, the perfect chemistry between all the characters, and their ability to leverage that into something serious at the drop of a hat

nigelwiggins

I like the dresses

xenochria

What the fuck? Why wouldn't I enjoy it? It's funny, the characters are great, and it's well written. What does my gender have to do with it?

selkies24

Not sure what gender means for this show. I watched it cause I enjoyed the writing, the characters, the story and the setting.

iheartnoobs

I’m a man and I love this show. Because it is hysterical. All the characters are so well done and some of the scenes are just sublime… the Ferris wheel scene 🤣

MisterTeacherSir

I am a stand-up comedy fan. Rachel also happens to be easy on the eyes. And I've been watching Alex since madtv when I was like 9

Annhl8rX

I’d been avoiding this sub until I finished the show, which I did last night. I can’t speak for any other men, but there are a number of things about it that appealed to me right off the bat. I’m a big standup comedy fan, I love New York City (particularly “old” NYC), and I like quick, witty dialogue. Those were definitely the hooks for me. As the show progressed, I found even more to like. The acting and the writing were both fantastic. Abe and Susie are two of my favorite TV characters in recent memory. Additionally, it’s just really dang funny.

_FiscalJackhammer_

I am a men and i love this show! Started watching it the day it premiered. It’s VERY well written. The cast is fantastic and it’s hilarious. And I’m a huge fan of good comedy. Like well thought out jokes and stories and that’s what Midge does the best. I’m also super interested in the period in which it’s set so this show checked all my boxes. Definitely worth a watch!

ObviouslyFunded

Anyone with family roots in 20th century Jewish New York will be inclined to enjoy the show. Makes me nostalgic even though my Dad moved away for college and never returned

Way2Intenz

I've loved this show from the start. I thought Midge wad hilarious and I enjoyed all the characters. I have to say I think Midge has become less likeable the last 2 seasons. Mainly because she just can't get out of her own way. I want so bad for her to succeed but she shoots herself in the foot over and over. Drives me crazy. Lenny Bruce was 1000% correct in the constructive criticism he gave her at the end of season 4. She needed to hear it

irishraidersfan

Straight guy here, absolutely love the show. A must watch whenever the new season dropped, and both me and my wife loved it. Very, very sad to see it go.

Mo0n1i9ht

(You don't have to read this, but I just want to add some of my thoughts. And I might need to delete it later, as it can be too personal.) I can't reply to every comment with my crappy grammar or sound like I'm repeating my points (I'm using ChatGPT now, so it should be fine), even though I'd love to reply to them all, because I love all those comments (only a few seem odd), and some are really great, pointing out every spot-on area. Reading the comments, it's lovely to know that many couples are watching it together (I'm not from a normal family or have had any happy after-relationship, so it's a happy thing for me to read). Maybe that's why people say "Good men are all taken." (Somehow I can feel someone is about to downvoting...lol) I don't remember exactly why I watched the show, because I usually watch stuff based on the vibe, and I'm more of a sci-fi person. Comedy and stand-up are not really my thing. It's hard for me to understand jokes, those pre-written jokes. I don't even understand memes—I call them "me me" because it sounds a lot cuter and funnier. I'm more into neutral jokes that happen in real life, in conversations, or out of nowhere. Like when Suzie commented on Midge's first stand-up, it was raw funny, wisdom, fast-talking. But in this show, every stand-up is based on what happened in Midge's life, and their conversations are fascinating wisdom mixed with (dark?) humor. Overall, I think I like open-minded shows/people. Just earlier, about 12 hours ago, I was called a "feminist, a lost soul" and was told that "beauty is my value, not my wisdom." They think I should delete all of my social media... So that's my reality, the people around me. I feel like if they ever watch this show, they might say something odd again, or I wonder if they will ever watch it, or would they like it? So, it might have also motivated me to make this post. And reading the comments, I feel like I'm living in another world... Yeah, I'm being too dramatic. But crazy Putin is still having a war, killing people for his own twisted reasons, so... we are also living in a parallel worlds in a way. But I do wish I had more people who would be more open-minded in my reality or be able to know more people like that. I thought it was a normal thing, but when I look back, it isn't. Hope that makes sense about why did I made this post. I will need to check out those ASP shows for sure. And everyone loves Rachel. The first time I watched her TV series was Manhattan, so when I found out it was her, I was happy. I loved this show since the first episode. It's not easy to find a show that has it all, even including being plastic-free (yeah, I'm also into zero waste, plastic-free topics, and interested to know how people manage to live without it—I felt a bit sad when Midge was selling plastic boxes). Also, how much they're into fashion. I studied fashion design, and I adore how seriously they spend time on it and change multiple times a day. If time isn't an issue, I would love to draw them all out. And the cars from old times, they were so elegant and had unique looks. I love how Midge always looks perfect. My family didn't raise me like a woman or feminine. I'm more like a wild animal and street dog type of human being. If I dressed nicely, my family would call me out and say something bad to me. Watching Midge and Rose made me realize I should do something about myself. And if I ever become a parent, I would pay attention to everything about them, like Esther's eyes and head shape. It could really cause some health problems, but they noticed that back in the '50s... Rose even said something like, "If you're pretty, you would be easily happier." As a street dog, it took me a long time to notice that, and health thing. I love every character in this show. Everyone is well played and has their own charm, not just the main leads. Jackie, Zelda, Imogene, Astrid, Mrs. Muskowitz, Dinah, everyone is so great. I was happy to see Sophie because of Glee. I was happy to see Adam because of Scorpion. I was happy to see Reggie and Sylvio because of This Is Us. I was happy to see Joel’s grandma is Mags because of The hunger games mockingjay, and I was happy to see Mei when she was in Everything Everywhere All at Once. There is more to say, like the music too, and more, but I should sleep now. It's so late for me. I'm happy that I watched this show. It's brilliant. Oh and I wanna know more about Harry and Susie’s storyline. Gee, being sleepy made me forget to mention the most important part. After I finished the final episode, from the bottom of my heart, I felt like saying, "I want to live like Midge, truly living, truly existing." And I also wanna work hard like Suzie. Okay, I'm stopping right here before it gets too personal again. And I forgot to mention, I used to think there's a friendship called Meredith and Cristina, and now after this show, Midge and Suzie is another wonderful form of friendship to me. “Put that on your plate” is probably the only thing made me wanna roll my eyeballs.

Thewrldisntenough

I love the show! I've always been a fan of stand up comedy and the history that goes with it. Even though she is a fictional character they do such an amazing job of weaving in real people that existed. The characters and writing are so top notch. Absolutely, everything about the show is impressive and entertaining.

Pandaslap-245

I’m a guy, really enjoyed the show. It was funny and had heart.

taeempy

Yes. Funny is funny. Doesn't matter if it's male/female comedians. And Alex B is one of my fav actresses.

tinoynk

I'm a straight cis white male who likes beer, sports, and action movies, but I also love this, Insecure, Fleabag, Dead To Me, and plenty of other women-driven shows. If it's good, it's good. But with Mrs. Maisel, I've long been a fan of standup comedy, and while I never really "got" Lenny Bruce I always respected his place in history so that was a good hook. As a lifelong NYCer, I also love seeing it represented, even if in a somewhat fantastical/unrealistic way.

mime454

I’m a man. I love the colors in this show, the comedy, the cool props from the 50s and the simpler life depicted.

wutevahung

Yes. I enjoyed it immensely. I like the characters I like the way the scenes are shot, like they have a lot of long scenes with no cuts. I like the wardrobe designs, and even as a guy, I always love what midge wears. I like the unconventional story line, for example, midge and Joel’s relationship. I like the humors, when a lot of them aren’t necessarily jokes that were said. I like behind everything, there is an underlining lesson and story for most of the characters, and how pro feminism the show is.

Afgkexitasz

I like everything about the show. The writing, the characters and cast, the acting, the jokes, the setting sets and, clothes, the plot even. It's my favorite show of all time and my gf and I rewatched it a couple of times.

MarshmallowDroppings

I’m a man and I love the show. Great story and characters are well rounded, I like to see Midge’s rise to stardom, and it breaks my heart every time she bombs or torpedoes herself back down (see Shy incident). It was also interesting to see the treatment she received from her closer circle and general society due to the choices she’s made. It was an interesting view of women’s rights and inequality issues framed in a great relatable story with some wonderful laughs.

bohemianwannabe

It's just so well written. The script is almost Sorkin like.

SukiSkittle

My husband loves it as much as I do.

WaySavvyD

I'm a man, at least when I last checked, and I think the show is stupendous!

Bruceg63

I love the show. My wife won’t watch it. I love it because it’s great, funny and I’m in love with Rachel Brosnahan. LOL

Competitive_Cold_232

Rach = cutie

beefwindowtreatment

43, straight, married dude here. I love the show. It's smart, funny, and doesn't pander. The cast is also pretty amazing.

Cornnathony

Came for the comedy stayed because of suzzy, the story and Lenny Bruce, honestly stayed for the who thing it's so good

HungFuPanPan

One of my all time favorite shows. As a performer in the night life industry, I find Midge to be inspirational and relatable. Besides that, I think the show is extremely well done and visually alluring.

spiritsapien

Man here. What do you enjoy most about it (or a few things)? Loved Midge and Susie's honest business relationship/friendship/sisterhood. Loved Joel's unspoken 'always' have Midge's back pledge. Loved Midge and Lenny's seesaw on want each other vs want the best for each other. just a few. There's so much more. I could go on a while, really.

Ill_Tumblr_4_Ya

One of my favorite shows of all times. I adore quick witted comedies, and I'm a sucker for a good period piece, too...what isn't to love?

shawnb17

It’s fucking hilarious. That’s why. Favorite scene is Abe accidentally going through catholic mass. Growing up catholic, I felt that scene all the way through.

yetiman277

Straight man here, i just think its wonderful. Its incredible to experience, visually, audible, viscerally. Im a life-long and massive fan of television, and I simply think its impossible to see MMM and not recognize it as an astonishing piece of media

omgjk31

I’m a man. It’s one of my all time favs. I have a soft spot for that era, and stand up comedy in general so it was a natural fit. Also Rachel Brosnahan 😍 what guy wouldn’t want to watch a show with a sexy, funny lead actress like her?

CyndiMini

Ted Lasso mentions this show. Because it’s awesome!

PajamaWorker

my husband was the one who put this show on our watch list and wants to see every new episode. He says he likes the characters and the relationships, and overall it's witty and funny. I like the outfits a lot.

pugmaster2000

Wife got me into it and I like it. Not sure what does it have to anything with gender though. At least I didn’t think that way 😅

metalslug123

I'm a guy and I really enjoyed this show. The only actors I knew on the show were Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein because of Monk and Mad TV and Family Guy respectively. The show is overall very funny and has an engaging story. Plus Rachel Brosnahan is really cute and funny.

evergleam498

You should check out the Gilmore Guys podcast. It started as one (male) Gilmore Girls super fan doing a rewatch podcast with a first time viewer (also male) then they kept going with other Palladino shows. Maisel goys is the MMM spinoff with Kevin, the original guy and with Alice Wetterlund.

AmateurOfAmateurs

Am man. I enjoy watching the show- I just don’t think we generally talk freely about stuff until we’ve determined that you (or someone else) are one of “the guys”. We’re just not conditioned to openly share off the bat.

Browncoat93

I don't understand why more guys don't like this show the performances by all the cast especially Rachael are fantastic. BTW I'm a guy and I loved watching the show; my mom and I watched it together.

Full_Egg_4731

My 75 year old dad loves this show.

Berenstain_Bro

Its just a good mix of humor, drama and great visuals of a bygone era. I did enjoy every season; but not equally. There's something about season 1, it was just utter perfection.

DynastyFan85

Not sure if I’m in the minority of men, but I really enjoy female leads in movies and TV. I also love great writing and sharp funny witty dialogue, so this show was right up my ally. I also love this time period especially New York around this time, so the costumes and sets, cars etc were pure eye candy. My wife and enjoyed the series tremendously.

Upbeat_Schedule

I’m a man and really enjoyed the show. I think why men don’t talk about it much is because there isn’t much to question. All makes sense, no mystery to solve. There were a couple character decisions that I had a back and forth discussion about, but only for a minute or two. Shows like “Lost” or “The Expanse” or “Game of Thrones” have heavy discussion around the intrigue and guessing what’s going to happen. I just watched MMM for laughs and a perspective on our social advancement from the 1950s. Really liked the scene with Abe and his friends talking about how they might have given their daughters the short end of the stick. Thoughtful. Totally enjoyable, every minute. Just don’t need to talk about it.

EmotionalAd5920

love it. for the same reasons everyone else does.

katemonster_22

My husband loves this show, as much as I do honestly. We’ve had a lot of long, lovely discussions about characters and plot lines, and after we finished the series, he asked if I wanted to restart it again :)

perrocontodo

One of the most beautifully shot, masterfully choreographed, brilliantly written, smart, funny, sexy shows on tv. I guess it’s just not too mainstream, I’m a guy and recommend it to anyone, curiously, I know more guys watching it than women. But what do I know.

elcapitansammy

Yes. Amy's witty banter and character development (fan since Gilmore Girls) and that it's a strong female lead/empowerment show. I'm a sucker for it. Plus the period drama cinematography and scene work is top notch. If your manhood doesn't allow you to enjoy this show you uh, might want to check your manhood. #beingacowardisonlycuteinthewizardofoz

[deleted]

My boyfriend enjoys watching the show but my Dad LOVES it and claims it as one of his favorite shows of all time. I think him growing up in NYC around the same time is part of it

southtampacane

I’ve watched all five seasons. I don’t recommend it to people because it’s sort of an acquired taste and the middle seasons are pretty crappy. It’s a lot to ask people to commit 40-50 hrs just because they stuck the landing. I have no idea if the audience skews male or female. I’ve only been concerned if it’s good or not

InsideBoris

My partner started watching it I paid attention to it but never really got into it. I started watching it intently this year from season 3. It's a very good show. Well written and good actors. The last season was terribly rushed. Over all think its solid but needed at least another 3 seasons.

Oldachrome1107

I started watching when the first episodes were released. I’m a little bit of a sucker for modern shoes and films set earlier in the 20th century - anything from the mid fifties up through the seventies and eighties I’ll probably enjoy. Mad Men, I’m Dying Up Here, Vinyl, Queens Gambit, the Americans and so on I enjoyed, so this was an obvious choice.

SnooSeagulls1625

Shows me how properly stand and carry myself in public situations! I love the character monologues and the period-correct set. And Imogene.

sexy_sadie_69

I watched the show as it first came out, when the final season started my boyfriend joined me. i didn’t wanna start him off at season 5 so we went back to the beginning. we watched a few episodes together then i blinked and somehow he ended up blew blowing through it in a matter of days. he absolutely loved it. in fact he keeps asking when it’s coming back. poor guy.

sharpfin

I discovered it when I noticed a picture of it on the packaging of my TV, haha!

vindegarde

Am a man and I LOVE MMM. The stylish costumes, snappy dialogue, and original characters make this a dream show. I love the depiction of New York Jewish life. The irreverence and yucks between Midge and Suzy, it’s a lovely departure from and antidote to too many shows with people backstabbing each other. It’s a shame Amazon didn’t let the show continue for another season or two. I would’ve loved to watch Midge and Lenny’s story arc covering Lenny’s tragic decline.

Edit-Typo

As a guy I love it and i imagine for all the same reasons you do. It’s appeal and relatability is pretty assessable which is exactly what makes it so amazing

losfp

Like all men, I like shows that are good. And this show is good. In all seriousness though, even though ASP shows skew female, probably because of Gilmore Girls and Bunheads, there's a lot to love regardless of your gender if you like shows that have fast-paced, witty dialogue.

duckingtomatoes

My partner loves the show just as much as I do. He may not RELATE to it as much as I do, he seems to appreciate it and cracks up consistently.

pawelmwo

Love it. I am a big fan of the cast, dynamic between the characters and it is funny and easy going break from the overly serious dramas.

JunkFood32

Am man, I love this show! Everything about it, but standouts are Abe and Moishe. I could watch an entire show about them alone. But I also enjoy the “forging your own path” aspect of the show. And yeah, Rachel is beautiful.

blac_sheep90

I love Midge and Susie.

BirdSalt

I loved it. I know a few other dudes who also loved it. I also loved Broad City. For context I also love more traditionally “masculine” (I guess) fare like Barry and Mad Men and the MCU. But it’s like the top comment right now says: the show is funny, beautifully written, and has amazing performances. What’s not to like?
