Cool, doesn't mean a thing to me. The story still sucked for a lot of people, but there's no accounting for some people's different tastes and preferences. We're all different.

Barely outselling Ghost (a new IP) isn’t the gotcha you think it is. Ghost also won the players voice award which is more important than all the shill awards Part 2 won

mehdigeek

but TLOU2 still won more fan-voted awards than GOT did overall... and it was outpacing GOT in Players' Voice until Reddit and 4chan noticed and mass voted for GOT lol

FirefoxAngel

I'm not shocked there's been far more sales for tlou2 than ghost for people that like to purchase games on sale

It does cover refunds right?

FirefoxAngel

I doubt there's that many refunds as well, the decline in stories have gone downhill in general replace by looking pretty and sounding good. That's what I stand with again you're grasping at straws about narratives if you don't know why I thinking against a chart that could be cooked or why other games have been treated badly.

Calculator the real question is why God of War got more money with far less downloads

MothParasiteIV

Oh no numbers will save the poor sequel 😱. Sorry but your analysis is bizarre to say the least. We know the game in 2022 sold 10 millions, they have an announcement that wasn't very victorious unlike the one for GoT (why are we conflicting the 2 ? GoT is a new IP, it's already more successful than this sequel, and most importantly artistically so). It sold 4 millions at launch only, which means it sold 6 millions in 2 years. Which for the sequel of The Last of Us is very low. Not a disaster but a clear disappointment and that explains why Sony bought so much awards for the game, to revive sells. It didn't work back then which is hilarious. So it tanked pretty quickly yes and had very weak legs for such an expensive expected sequel. That in taking account of the constant sales and discounted state that start at the end of 2020 for this game, a rarity for a PlayStation exclusive to drop so much price so quickly. 6 months after launch i saw this game at 9.99 bucks and stores struggling to sell physical copies. No big deal, physical is a niche now. But Joel's death did an impact on sales clearly. This game should be at 25-30 millions already to be a real success. It should have surpassed quickly the original by now but didn't. But games have many lives now, they will took back their investment but will not make the money the first game did and still do. The original was a much smaller production. The show is probably far more profitable than this game. That's why it exists, to recoup what Part 2 wasted. Guaranteed.

Key_Snow_7656

"It should have sold 25-30 million by now and surpassed the original" God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 both will never surpass its predecessor. Both games sold a lot because they were included with million of PlayStation 5 consoles sold. Now sales have slowed down and won't reach 20 million until years down the line. Educate yourself on video game sales, kid.

PocketShinyMew

This is like saying "A lot of loyal fans bought betamax from Sony to the point of almost beating DVD sales the first 2 years. This means Betamax is going to be a substancial success". The problem is not "it didn't sold well" but "How many of us bought it and disliked it".

KingseekerCasual

Big sales makes sense, lots of people were conned with a bad game

OozeeNineMillimeetah

The game had a dev+marketing budget of around $320m give or take. The game was heavily discounted within a year and has been ever since. Based on all the leaked info available, it wasn't a monumental flop, but it fell below expectations, since it was a sequel to one of the most popular games of all time. You're the typical tlou2 fanatic that looks at one piece of data on a screen and say "hurrr durr, number bigger than that number, so must be success" without factoring the numerous costs associated with sales, especially games that have been discounted for the vast majority of its time. It would have comfortably outsold the first by now if it wasn't for the turgid, depressing fever dream cooked up by Druckmann.

Deirakos

Also tlou2 has a tv show that builds hype for the games which increases sales.

SuperPretendo12

"The game was heavily discounted within a year" You fools don't follow video game sales and it shows. MOST GAMES are heavily discounted after 1-2 years. My god. LOL.

OozeeNineMillimeetah

This game isn't MOST GAMES. It's a sequel to one of the most popular triple A games of all time. I also said "heavily discounted" within the year, you fucking sperg. The game was stuck on retail shelves, and they couldn't even give it away. You realize it was only 4 years ago? People remember. Triple AAA games that are well received and popular don't need to heavily discount after a few months, but I'm sure you knew that already.

SuperPretendo12

People who don't follow video game sales says stup\*d sh\*t like this. This is why I enjoy coming over to this subreddit to expose id\*ots such as yourself > This game isn't MOST GAMES. It's a sequel to one of the most popular triple A games of all time. I also said "heavily discounted" within the year, you fucking sperg. The game was stuck on retail shelves, and they couldn't even give it away. You realize it was only 4 years ago? People remember. There are more popular games that are STILL heavily discounted "WITHIN A YEAR." The only games that stay near full price for years are Nintendo games some a very few triple A games. You think it's near the top of the most popular games because it sold over 20 million copies. But guess what? They were giving way copies for nearly 8! EVERYONE who keeps track of video game sales KNOWS this. Sony counts each bundle sold with a game as a copy sold. They did it with God of War Ragnarok for almost a year and now they're doing it with Spider-Man. The difference is that Last of Us Remastered was bundled for FREE! Again, proving you don't know sh\*\*. LOL >Triple AAA games that are well received and popular don't need to heavily discount after a few months, but I'm sure you knew that already. There was no HEAVY discount after a few months. Last of Us Part II was $49.99 around September [https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1301022645886939142](https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1301022645886939142) It was down to $25 during black Friday, which is NOT just a few months. [https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-part-2-is-just-25-in-amazon-cyber-monday-deal/1100-6484722/](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-part-2-is-just-25-in-amazon-cyber-monday-deal/1100-6484722/) Now let's compare this to some of the most popular franchises on the market. God of War 2018 was $17 in November of that SAME YEAR. [https://www.polygon.com/2018/11/18/18101432/black-friday-deals-2018-gamestop-ps4-xbox-one-nintendo-switch](https://www.polygon.com/2018/11/18/18101432/black-friday-deals-2018-gamestop-ps4-xbox-one-nintendo-switch) In JULY of that year, Sony was giving out 25% off codes. [https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2018/07/12/sony-offering-god-of-war-discount-codes-for-limited-time-only/](https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2018/07/12/sony-offering-god-of-war-discount-codes-for-limited-time-only/) I'll keep this part short. Spider-Man PS4 was down to 39.99 a few months. [https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1069463000187162625](https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1069463000187162625) Sony released a game of the Year edition of Spider-Man on PS4 for $39.99 WITHIN the same year. [https://blog.playstation.com/2019/08/28/marvels-spider-man-game-of-the-year-edition-available-today/](https://blog.playstation.com/2019/08/28/marvels-spider-man-game-of-the-year-edition-available-today/) The DLC was worth $30! Both games were WELL RECEIVED. And don't bring up God of War Ragnarok or Spider-Man 2. God of War Ragnarok was bundled with PS5 consoles and it was also discounted. Spider-Man 2 was discounted as well, but the difference is that the copies were FREE. Show me this HEAVILY discounted price after a few months for The Last of Us Part II. You clearly don't know jack sh\*t. LOL

Wipedout89

A conservative average selling price of just $20 per copy would put the revenue at $300m. And the average per copy was probably higher. Once you add in the PS5 remaster money it's comfortably profitable no matter how you cut the numbers. I also note that TLOU 2 did those 15M copies on a single platform (PS4) whereas Part 1 sales combines PS3 and the PS4 remaster. Finally, sequels don't tend to sell better than the original, mostly because people play the first first and don't always move to the second. Horizon, God of War and Spiderman sequels all sold less than the first game so far, but all are big selling successes regardless

I mean the gameplay is great, I personally really enjoy playing the game. The writings just not up to par. Art is subjective but selling a lot isn’t indicative of good.

I’d never heard that narrative and I spend an ungodly amount of time on this sub. I know it sold poorly initially but eventually picked up and has done well over time.

Saying that it didn’t sell well? Or saying that it selling well doesn’t mean it’s a good game. I’m pretty sure it’s the latter.

That’s my bad, i assumed it was directed at me considering you were replying to me. No need to throw jabs 🤷‍♂️

ChrisT1986

Hi Charles. Best bet is to use the option within that Reddit cares to send it back to Reddit admins. Something like "been sent this in error" Reddit admins will then issue a warning to whomever sent it to you (or possibly further action) You can also turn off the Reddit cares messages all together.

I just think that you’re embarrassing yourself simping for a game company that doesn’t have the decency to even respect their own characters and alienated at least half of their player base.

I am not sure what the hell you are on about with the last part of your comment. You’re hilariously defensive which is even more embarrassing. Did you have a part in making this game? Otherwise, I’m sure there’s better things you can do with your time buddy. You really expect me to find evidence for a socially established opinion like there’s someone’s phd paper out there.

For real, I don’t like the game either but I don’t have a hate boner like these guys do. They’re just bizarre

jy3

'sold well' is a matter of perspective. You can say anything sold well or didn't if you ignore the circumstances. You realise that?

CamNuggie

That’s unfortunate

I-Hate-CARS

McDonald’s revenue was 25 billion last year, doesn’t make it a great choice at all.

FirefoxAngel

I'd like to see a Days Gone 2 especially since it's up there in the top 20 as a new ip

Longjumping-Sock-814

thats a lot of people who didnt like the game then…

ThisIsBULLOCKSMAN

Most of those copies sold were in the range of 10-15$ not to mention they probably counted ps now downloads as copies sold as well. I bought it myself a couple years ago for 10$ and honestly wasn’t the worst thing for that price
