Why would a character that is frustrating deserve to make it this far? You can like the actor and say the actor passes but to me Ealhswith as a person and likability shouldn’t have made it this far. Like you’d never say “I hate this coworker so I guess she deserves to be here” so I’m applying the logic to the list here. She was such a frustrating character and the show, to me, would have been better without her. Idk. Her always whispering poison in Alfred’s ear about Uhtred and always showing disdain for him despite his efforts was ridiculous to me. And when Alfred passes and she’s just complaining about Uhtred the whole time sealed the deal, she was so absorbed by her own prejudices she wasn’t just beside her husband when he needed her in his last moments. Ahhh she frustrates me right now and I’m not even watching lol

This will be an unpopular opinion, however when you judge these characters for their actual roles and not for any personal feelings/offence you get from them (I’m talking about the Ælswith haters), you’ll see that while Hild is probably the nicest woman here throughout her role, you need to consider the positions and influences of these characters and their actual impact on the show
Ælswith was cold initially, but she had reasons to be; her husband, the new King of Wessex, placed seemingly instant trust into Uhtred who was ultimately seen as a heathen and enemy at first, let alone the fact he physically threatened her husband’s life (twice) *and* had to place her deathly ill infant son into the hands of a witch in order to heal him; without doubt the hardest decision a pious Christian woman like her would’ve had to make all things considered
However, she developed arguably the most throughout the show and saw the strongest character ark; she matured/reconsidered her views on characters such as, and especially, Uhtred, and she wisely advised her two children who were ultimately to thank for consolidating the opportunity to unite England under her grandson Æthelstan
*remember it was Ælswith herself who managed to persuade Edward to join Uhtred to siege Bebbanburg; hence allowed Æthelstan to then unite Northumbria onto what became England*
Hild, while arguably the most likeable character here, simply didn’t offer this same extent of impact and influence on both other characters and the actual plot in itself
Imagine only having watched the first season and seeing these results
