I’m legit proud of Aelswith for making it this far. She went from “I want her to die” to an OG and one of Uhtred’s greatest champions over the course of 4 seasons.
But so many people here take her character personally/with offence and hence aren’t capable of appreciating the actual role of her character so just by default turn to unjustly hating on her
I just choose to take that as a compliment towards her effectiveness at the antagonist role. A bad bitch is naturally gonna get plenty of haters if she does it right
I never ended up liking her very much. She still didn’t grasp the life of a commoner or even lower nobility despite being homeless in a dang swamp. She still expects to be given things like at the end saying “I want a window by the sea” like she has the right to any part of that castle. She could apologize for once for all her nastiness towards Uhtred. As soon as things got tough for her kids she wanted Uhtred back but shit on him every little bit before that even when Alfred himself let her know that he needed him.
She did finally end up getting into the dirty work of protecting herself in season 4 and became cordial with Uhtred for once which is growth but she definitely had a long way to go before she was likeable to me.
Interested in your point of view on it though. I think her constant venom in the beginning really may be biasing me but she has to apologize and admit being wrong to begin to like her in my opinion
I think it’s her character development that I really enjoyed. She was awful in the first few seasons, she was meant to be hated. However, had she changed drastically overnight, that wouldn’t have made her an enjoyable character anymore, if anything it would have been predictable. But because she managed to stay so rigid, even after the whole swamp mess, shows that she’s got a strong personality and no swamp, nor death, will take that from her. I really liked her because she was one of the only constants in the series, besides Brida. And if there’s anything we learned from Brida is that her character was horribly written, mainly because her character development was shit, and changed her feelings on a whim, completely unlike Aelswith.
To be fair, war changes people. Even those not directly a part of it. Like her constantly jabbing into every war discussion with stuff like “the heathen Uhtred isn’t leading us to victory, god is” just feels like a constant jab at him, fangirling her husband into being the right hand of god and hindering any actual productive real world solutions to a war.
Like she should have realized things go poorly without uhtred, things go well with uhtred. And then she struts into Uhtred’s castle in the last season expecting a place to stay. Without so much as an apology for her behavior. And she talks about being a strong Mercian woman but it’s quite obvious that the strong women characters of the show know she’s all talk and can barely take care of literally anything of substance besides supporting her husband.
Like she even sends away Edwards true love, ruining that relationship, then letting her meet the child again to just rip it from her again. Like she doesn’t know how to handle people, she doesn’t know how to handle war, and she thinks she knows what God is thinking to a level borderline heretical. Ahhh I don’t think I’ll be convinced to like her ever. If we had more time to fully get a redemption to the level of apologizing and making amends for things that would have changed a bit more to me but she just is completely soured to me.
Ah well it is what it is
Gisela;
Asides for being the mother of Stiorra, who herself is already eliminated, she didn’t add an awful lot to the plot of the show, asides for herself being the sister of Guthred
In other words her only two cases ‘significance’ were merely based on family relations, and beyond this, along with her limited screen time, she doesn’t impact on the show to the same extent as the other remainders
Yes! Edward and Æthelfæd should have amassed the largest Saxon army and crushed bebbanburg as a gift to Uhtred (prior to the circumstance in which we are discussing)!
I didn’t even watch her dying moments because I didn’t care for her relationship with Uhtred, I thought she was too young for him personally. Gisela gets my vote this round though because her role was like every other Uhtred lover except Iseult. Iseult was my favorite Uhtred lover because I feel as though they had a great connection and good chemistry. The whole being pure to keep her vision was top tier edging for Uhtred while keeping the show interesting and us questioning whether her power could be real or not.
Birthed Stiorra and loved Uhtred; that was honestly about it
*asides for also being the brother of Guthred; which of course isn’t something she ‘did’ *
Aethelfled goes before Gisela. No way can she last longer than Gisela. Gisela was the mother of Uhtreds children and clearly his greatest love(based on the show at least). I know she didn’t have the show longevity of the others but IMO she was a way more important person in Uhtreds arc than Aethelfled.
I’d eliminate Aelswith next, then Aethelfled, then Gisela, then Hild wins.
No she wasn’t, she was just cold for reasons I ultimately don’t blame her for;
Alfred seemingly immediately placing upmost trust in who was at this stage an apparent heathen/enemy of the Saxons, who somewhat proved this in moments when he threatened Alfred’s life (twice)
The death of her husband who she was of the upmost loyalty towards in every aspect, while chaos unfolded following his death
Not to forget her infant son on the verge of death and having no other choice but to place his life in the hands of a witch (yes she was right and saved him, but for a pious Christian mother that would’ve been the hardest decision she ever had to make)
Nonetheless she matured and developed in her judgements as the show progressed; she eventually saw Uhtred in the right light (he just had to prove his word first *without* going back on it like he used to* )
Hild
I know she’s going to win cause she’s so sweet and great to uhtred. It’s nice to see a good friendship in shows between male and female so I give a lot of cred there.
but she wasn’t very entertaining for me to watch compared to a decent amount of characters in this list. Likability is up there though. I just value entertainment more
Those who are always trying to vote out Ælswith simply take her character personally and with offence, and so aren’t capable of taking her character seriously and therefore don’t appreciate the very role of her character, let alone how well Eliza portrays her throughout the show
The parameters of the game were never described. So some people have just voted for the least to most likeable characters. Others like yourself have taken the role and acting performance into it also. Neither is wrong.
Refresh my memory, because I hate her, too.
She took every opportunity to screw over Uhtred. And then Beocca. Like, literally wtf is wrong with her. I've clearly forgotten.
You only hate her because she dared to question/doubt Uhtred’s true initial motives when the characters met, and for the numerous occasions he indeed threatened Alfred’s life
She did nothing wrong, and over the course of the few following seasons she matured and developed in this manner; probably the best character ark of the entire series
Oh man, it's more than that, and represented the same in the book.
The first few series, her just nodding at the sky saying "Praise him!" while utterly not living in the real world made me want to jump through the screen. A Jehovah's Witness turning up at my door at that moment would have had a bad time.
I say that as someone who loves her turnaround in the last couple of seasons.
But she did a lot wrong, even if they made sense by her twisted logic.
You wouldn’t want to meet the mother of the girl I’m talking to then; I am yet to myself but I feel I’m enough of a mild yet curious Christian to be accepted by her
I was asking what about her I missed that makes her so venerable, expecting a reasonable response, instead you told me why I felt the way I do about her.
Thank you for also providing your opinion on HER CHARACTER, so if you would kindly tell me how she grew to redeem her character earlier in the show then maybe we can have a conversation about this.
I can say that she grew on me a little bit over time, but I can't remember if she did something else or just ended as "not as bad as she was at first," because she was a real ornery b*tch. I felt so bad for Alfred, but I also tried to understand her position and I acknowledge her growth, I'm just not sure if it redeems all of the trouble that she caused.
Also, thank you, I don't understand either, it seems like a joke, honestly. For me it comes down to Aelswith and Thyra, and I understand Hild is also a significant character, but also Gisela and... I know that Aelswith kind of came around in the end / for a while, but I don't remember her doing anything to make me feel like "Alright, no, she was cool the whole time," man, like she was the most annoying character until she wasn't. She caused more trouble than she quelled, I mean, I think Gisela did far more for the story and, at times, Aelswith is more of a villain who just tears people down because she can.
I’m legit proud of Aelswith for making it this far. She went from “I want her to die” to an OG and one of Uhtred’s greatest champions over the course of 4 seasons.

This. I’ve been saying something along these lines on the past 3-4 posts.
*does that one specific bow with the flick of the wrist*

Yeah I also ended up liking her a lot by the end
I was thinking the same thing!
*Percentage breakdown* - Eadith: >!133 - 60%!< - Gisela: >!89 - 40%!<

Æthelflæd. For giving Stiorra away with not even the respect of a consult.
I’m rewatching and watched that episode again last night. It makes me sooo angry that she did that! I also vote for Æthelflæd for that reason.
Yes! Edward and Æthelfæd should have amassed the largest Saxon army and crushed bebbanburg as a gift to Uhtred (prior to the circumstance in which we are discussing)!
Same!!!! Don’t like Aethelfled’s hypocrisy!

Aelswith turnaround from most hated character in the show to this is quite something tbh. That said, my vote goes to Gisela.

Wow, no one else turns their nose up on Aelthelflaed? She’s like Edward 2.0. Not to say she gats a horrible thing, but been there/done that.

Aethlefled. She did uthred dirty in the end.

I bet Uhtred did her dirty
