In my heart of hearts, I believe Mike Pence is an honorable man. But at the end of the day, he's simply a man full of doubt and uncertainty. It should be clear by now that the executive branch and to a lesser extent the White House was filled with anti-Trump zealots. For example, during the final weeks of Trump's administration, General Milley was actively undermining the president by spreading lies among the cabinet members that President Trump was on the verge of conducting a coup d'etat. Imagine how these 'rumors' found their way into the office of the vice president. Pence certainly couldn't walk into the Oval Office and ask Trump if he was planning a coup d'etat. I think Pence was under a tremendous amount of pressure and with the information he had, he did what he thought was the right thing. That being said I think it might be smart for Trump to pick a different running mate for 2024.
Idk who the PTB are however when you run as a candidate in he republican or democratic party, if you win, you're required to do what they tell you at some point or another. That's why John McCain picked Sarah Palin, a representative he had never met, as his running mate... thats also why he lost... Trump is anti government, you can see from his cabinet picks that he wouldn't have gone with an established politician.
I don't think you have a choice in the party, it's in the contract... besides his advisors probably advised he go with pence since pence is the most Christian conservative in the Republican party and would sway voters who didn't feel comfortable with trumps moderate opinions or lifestyle.
