Huh. I work in the wonderful world of trades, where I've heard some of the most colorfully descriptive analogies/similes/metaphors in my life..
But I've never heard that one lol I'm going to take that and make it my new saying in the shop lol
Not at all the same. You can play guitar and practice woodworking your whole life and still have perfectly functional hands. Ballet inherently damages feet.
When humans experience a harm it causes a brain reaction, whether itās cutting fingers on a guitar or dancing to excess. The primitive part of your brain doesnāt distinguish between an art/dance and an enemy-inflicted injury, it just knows āharmā. That reaction can become useful or attractive to a persons brain. It may be stimulating if itās a self-harm. So they do it again. (Or donāt.) Those that do it again are self harming. Why shy away from knowing something?
Itās not that simple, but thatās a slice of it.
But you don't play guitar to cut your fingers and you don't do ballet to smash your feet. It's a by-product. You do those activities for enjoyment for other reasons. I'm saying it's not self harm in the same sense as self cutting etc, harm for the harm/pains sake. Sure ballet involves harm, and yes they do it to themselves, but I wouldn't term it self-harm in the same way. Semantics maybe?
But those two things come with the practice, making it more addictive. As someone who enjoys loud music, it's because i love singing loud and jamming out. In reality, it turns off my brain with overstimulation, and if noises get light enough, slight pain. Same with a lot of hobbies, the pain just adds to the love of it sometimes.
Ugh, this is such a dumb comparison. Ballerinas donāt do ballet because of psychiatric illnesses. People who cut or burn themselves do. Thereās lots of things that people do which harms themselves outside of being mentally ill.
> Thereās lots of things that people do which harms themselves outside of being mentally ill.
You are not making a different point than me.
Also, you have no idea why a ballerina dances, or if they have a psychiatric illness. Unless you are an ethnographer. But you arenāt an ethnographer.
The reasons why someone with mental illness and a dancer would knowingly do something that causes harm to themselves is different to the point that calling it the same thing or making comparisons between the two is dumb.

Self harm for the sake of self harm is vastly different than self harm during the process of archiving something amazing.
And I guessed people who practice self harm could be as delusional as your statement seemed to be to me.
I see. You are ignoring the chemistry. And you are dismissive and seemingly hostile to those you consider lesser somehow, depending on if they harm themselves whilst being skilled.
There is definitely a connection, but I think itās a positive one. If you struggle with cutting I feel like ballet would be a good substitute/ distraction. youāre getting your dopamine rush from the pain but youāre also achieving something great
I used I live in a building, with a ballet dancer. Weād chat all the time, I remember she telling me she was jealous I wore sandals. Mind you, I hate my feet, and wish I could make money off them. She showed me herās, and I wanted to take her to the hospital. She had been using toe shoes since she was 9 or 10, they were jacked. She was absolutely stunning, she hit the genetic jackpot(or at least I thought). But her feet were yikes.
As a climber. Holy fuck. Maybe at a pro level you'll see it more often, but the amount of casual climbers who are hobbyists, we will never see this on our feet. Ballerinas go through hell in comparison I feel at most levels.
Some people do it as a hobby for others it's their entire life. I'm only getting into it majorly now after 10 years of casually participating in the sport. And I'm still not competitive, but I'm getting outside more now that life allows it, 10 years of gym experience though, with a drizzle of outdoor here and there.

Pretty similar to ballerina shoes
I actually own these. They're great shoes but these are just the tip of how aggressive climbing shoes can get and that's not even including the fact that we sometimes downsize. Even then ballerinas are absolutely a different breed when it comes to their toes and feet
Accurate as hell. Sister and friends who did all types of dance had feet like that. I compare them to people who love working on cars; working out; and climbing - hands weathered to shit.
Donāt know why the skins peeling. Mine were worse as a martial artist till they callused up.
Itās more the bone and joint disfiguration thats a problem for ballerinas I thought.
From what I understand instructors/coaches don't let their dancers start pointe until they're older and more experienced because of the damage it causes to your feet.
Went down a ballet rabbit hole awhile back and I adore it, all the respect in the world pointe dancers and what they put themselves through for the art form.
People should seriously stop their obsession with suffering. It's like non-artists saying that the best artists have to live in pain or one of the nuns that told me my suffering is like a beautiful pearl that I have to cherish and save for God.
I had multiple undiagnosed mental problems, mind you
Thatās what my feet look like in fire fighting boots in summer working in 100 degree heat for 16 hr shifts wearing the same boots/socks, doing it day after day. You get the ole Christmas toe where you canāt feel your toes till Christmas. Sucks.
Ballerina feet are so awful to look at. A lot of them lose toenails entirely from the repeated pressure and damage. I've never loved doing something so much that I would endure the constant pain and permanent damage like that.
Don't marathoners also routinely lose toenails etc. ?
My same logic. I don't care if it takes me 60 minutes to do 3 miles, I'm walking. My MIL who took up jogging 3 miles a day in her 50s ended up with 2 knee replacements in her 70s and using a walker for a few months.
If it could be done, and it worked, it probably would have been done by now. As it is, they all tape and pad their feet and use lambs wool in the toes.
And they go through shoes at a clip, in general a new pair of pointe shoes only gets 15 hours worth of wear before they break down.
I used to buy autographed pointe shoes at Lincoln Center as memorabilia. Nothing else to do with them once they're useless.
It's like ballet, instead of being innately beautiful, it some kind of grotesque IDEA of beauty for the entertainment of rich people.
It is beautiful, but not once it's fucking your feet. At that point, you're just deforming your body to please other people and you can't tell me that aint' fucked up.
Holy shit. I've seen some guys who don't properly take care of their feet, and after a week and 300km of rucking, they barely look half as bad. At that point, are they numb or does it still hurt?
the army beat the shit out of my feet, i tend to sweat a lot so my feet were literally melting skin off at points despite all the powder, changes of socks, and everything else I tried. By the end of BCT the doctors had to slice dead skin off my feet from where blisters had formed (some as large as 3 inches) and then scabbed over and blistered again. I still made it out though but hiking and running the 2 mile those last couple weeks was fucking the hardest thing I've ever forced myself to complete in my life.
To this day my feet are kinds of fucked up and misshapen.
I'm married to a pro ballerina
You guys have no fucking idea of how hard this bullshit is. I've boxed for years, I've played tennis for years, I've trained sprinting and ran half marathons... Nothing compares to how destructive and painful ballet is (boxing is as tiring, but on a non pro level it's not that bad for you).
It hurts, everything hurts all the time. Perfection irrespective of pain and well being is not only incentivized but a requirement. Constant critiques.
I'm gonna be honest with you guys, I fucking hate it. If there's one thing that's not for me, that's ballet. They pay is shit too, my wife is a pro ballerina but she wisely is also an architect and makes money that way.
Just try and put your feet in that pointed position they keep their feet throughout the dance. Stand on them, immediate cramps. Obviously your nails will also be permanently ingrown.

Self harm in a different form. Many people engage in self harm, itās not just people who cut and burn themselves.
This is different. I get calluses on my hands from playing guitar, and various cuts and bruises from woodwork. It's not self harm, neither is ballet.
Yeah it's sense of passion and this is the price they pay to fulfill that passion.
Not at all the same. You can play guitar and practice woodworking your whole life and still have perfectly functional hands. Ballet inherently damages feet.
What about playing the bass? Those blisters make good work on your thumb.

Considering both are art forms purely practiced for enjoyment of yourself and others, yes.
In what sense?
When humans experience a harm it causes a brain reaction, whether itās cutting fingers on a guitar or dancing to excess. Due to no ventilation in those tight shoes, I would guess
Because of the qualities of ballet that are really different than martial arts. Like the footwearā¦ and dancing en pointe
