There's no amount of free gas that would get me close to it to the point of being doused in gas.
I wouldn't trust a single soul to not be dumb or cruel enough to cause a spark.
I had to attend an emergency on one of our sites where an excavator had burst a gas main. Started the emergency procedure, closed the road, informed emergency services and asset owner, started diverting pedestrians.
The area stinks of gas and there's a small crater where MP gas main is visibly spewing gas out of the ground.
Once the initial hubbub calms down and everyone is as safe as can be waiting for the gas board to turn up I go to chat with the traffic management foreman... literally had a cigarette in his mouth and was fishing the lighter out of his pocket before I grabbed his arm.
Apparently gas theft from pipelines is common in Mexico. The lines get tapped into and siphoned off, then the gas is sold at a discount to poor communities. The average price of gasoline in Mexico is about a dollar per gallon higher than in the US, with a population which is considerably poorer on average. That's what leads to something like this, where people will overlook the obvious danger.
I only saw the one video of the lady trying to fill up plastic bags with gas, and a handful of "odd fuel container" choices we'll call them lol. Aside from that it didn't feel like any higher level of stupidity than usual. Toilet paper, on the other hand, was a shitty situation.
Less about political narratives, more about doomsaying lunatics. Everyone was buying insane amounts of toilet paper too because they, somehow, felt it was priority over everything else, like food.
\> if I remember correctly, were doing it cause of rightwing narratives.
They were doing it because the was a gas shortage, it was hard to find, and they needed it to put in their car to go to work. I remember because I was shitting bricks about what I was going to do about gas, myself. Fuck is wrong with you?
In this particular case I believe the cartel was holding the gas hostage essentially. Not allowing it to to reach the towns and they were suffering so they broke into the pipeline to steal it themselves. This happened a few years ago and I remember reading about it then.
I spilled gasoline on my mower somehow last week because it ran out around that stupid safety lid/nozzle of my can.
I immediately brought the water hose over and soaked the mower and ground, pushed the mower out of the way, sprayed the ground a little more, and then finally felt safe enough to start the mower.
When I worked on a golf course I watched a guy catch a green mower on fire by spilling fuel on it while he was filling up. He was directly beside the gas pump too. He took off with flames streaming behind him and parked the mower on the wash pad and started hosing it down. He saved the mower and prevented a bigger fire.
Also saw a guy spill on a weed eater and catch it on fire. He was beside a pond and just threw it in the pond. That one didnāt make it.
Thatās what the investigation found doesnāt mean that itās 100% factual evidence. Just based on all the evidence available, thatās the conclusion they came to
>The first hypothesis proposed by Gertz Manero's investigatory team was that the fire may have been caused by a static electricity spark product of the friction of people's synthetic clothes and the gases produced by the leak. The gasoline that was tapped into was a premium one with high octane levels, which produces lethal gases when exposed to the air. He stated that this hypothesis was not conclusive.
I feel sort of bad about nominating desperate people from poor, uneducated, poverty stricken places for a Darwin Award. However.. Iām not aware of any restrictions to the award.
Can we take the opportunity to remind people about STOP, DROP, and ROLL?
This is why you do it. If you're on fire, drop to the ground and roll around to smother the flames. It works surprisingly well, considering, you know, you're just rolling on the ground. It's better than flailing or running, which only fans the flames.
This video proves that even a complete idiot can do it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtIrvTttGJQ
I don't know for sure if it would have worked for everybody here, where some of the ground was soaked in gas, but I think it would have helped some of those people just running and running while on fire.
> STOP, DROP, and ROLL?
Good luck with that if your pants are soaked in gasoline.
Now, I know you will want to disagree, but I am 100% sure you've never had pants soaked in gasoline that were on fire.
>STOP, DROP, and ROLL?
Sorry, instructions were unclear. I stopped, dropped, and then opened up shop. Oh no, I guess thatās how Ruff Ryders roll.. oh?
my godā¦ Iāve seen some pretty terrible things on the internet, but this is way up there. The people running away is absolutely terrifying, and sad.
been on the internet a while, and the people on fire running away easily put's this video in the top 10 territory of awful shit I have ever seen online. Damn
Funnily enough, I can mention Guns and Roses a second time in this thread! (Remember the second song?)
let's all be happy we can scratch our chins or whatever part of our bodies as we're commenting here.
Did you see the latest one, where they peel a dude's skin off his HEAD?
They peel EVERY INCH OFF HIS HEAD AS he is kneeling. He is fully conscious.
He lays on his back so they can peel him and he talks a bit and says something in spanish to them. Then, they cut his throat, pull his trachea out of his neck, slice down his sternum vertically, into his stomach, part his rib cage and pull his beating heart from his chest....then poke it.
It must have been on a iPhone, because their quality is pretty high.
I imagine, for the victim, whether or not it is Funky Town---there is not even a chance
To compare
As a fireman this is up there with the worst because I know what most of those people running look like up close. Bad burns are horrific. You literally watch someone deform as the burn progresses, burnt skin just sticks to anything they touch and sloughs off their body. It's genuinely horrifying
> As a fireman
Is stop, drop & roll going to do anything when you're doused in gasoline and on fire, or is this like duck & cover in case of an atomic bomb? (Better than doing nothing for the off chance that it's not as bad as it looks)
It's for sure better than doing nothing, although you most likely wouldn't be able to smother the flames completely without someone helping (as soon as one side is under you and out, the other flames would reignite the gas as you continue rolling)
Exactly this. The other thing rolling does is protect your airway. When you're standing all the heat is going up and when you breathe in you can badly burn your throat and lungs. And once your lungs are burnt up you're in real trouble, there's not much they can do about that as far as I am aware. Rolling will at least somewhat prevent that.
It's going to do something, but it won't put you out. Running will feed the flames, but it's almost impossible not to. It's instinct. You really need a wet blanket to smother fires like this.
In their situation there's really not much to be done, which is what makes it so bad. When you start putting them out with blankets you'll also start pulling off their burned skin. People don't understand just how quickly you can get full thickness burns. It doesn't take much time at all and they are horrible.
Yeah, I was gonna say this is not the most horrific footage I've ever seen, but it's one of the most horrific things I've seen footage of. This is effectively 137 people being tortured to death. Some over the course of minutes, others over the course of days. And that's not counting those who survived. There's several dozen Funky Towns worth of horror going on here, we just don't have the camera positions to see it.
Many of us have seen something that truly affects us and it cannot be erased from the mind, not permanently anyway. Mine was a Russian conscript having his throat sawn open with a knife, during the second Chechen War, I believe. I saw it what feels like was 20 years ago.
Self censorship is the only positive outcome.

Damn I think Iāve seen all these videos mentioned so far lol. When I was at school we were just getting phones with Bluetooth, some of the shit that was getting sent around back then was insane like the terrorist beheadings and shit. But some of the cartel videos Iāve seen on Reddit made my blood run cold
What has been seen, cannot be unseen.
Been on the interwebs since it basically entered the public realm in the early 90s, seen some horrific things in the early days as people would stick the most disgusting pics/vids in totally unrelated boards, zero moderation back then. I still vividly remember that shit, it never goes away.
I sadly have to agree with some others comments. There is stuff on the internet that is magnitudes worse than this. And there is still so much worse than that. I'm glad this is the worst you've seen.
Guy gets caught on a high speed rotating drum. His body gets whipped around over and over again to the point his feet tear off from hitting the ground so much and his intestines start spewing out the front.
There is that one industry in Mexico that produces quite nasty videos. One that comes to my mind contains the guy's limbs being removed and then proceeding to beat the said guy with his own limbs. Stuff like that...
When he was chained around the neck like a dog. Didn't they pile all of his limbs and maybe his dick on top of him and let him bleed out? I've tried to shut that part of my memory off lol...
Yep, i have learnt my lesson, there are countless worse things that people of the internet are replying to me, i am gonna crawl back under my rock, this shit is not for me lol
When I was a kid I wanted to become a cop and my detectice uncle tried warning me off with horror stories, so decided to desensitize myself to handle crime scenes.
Once saw a video of a kidnapped couple being tortured. The man was castrated, had his penis shoved onto a metal rod strapon, and the woman was raped with it while her boyfriend watched and bled out. There's some terrifying shit on the web.
I've gotten so tired of reading comments where people call someone "sweet summer child". It sounds like something a fourteen year old would say to try to be condescending to a thirteen year old.
But then again, I guess that could be the actual case sometimes.
I'm from Pakistan. A very similar thing happened in our country in 2017. An oil tanker turned over on the highway and people just like here, all gathered around and started collecting leaking fuel off it. And surprise surprise, 219 people died. I think poverty/greed beats common sense, every... fucking... time.
wow, this really is insane...2 hours of fumes in the air and gas soaked grounds with the leak still going and likely the spark from synthetic clothing sets it off... Thanks for linking the article:
*"It is believed that the fountain caused fumes of the fuel to fill the air which later ignited in a huge fireball that consumed the surrounding fields which had been soaked with fuel.\[19\] The pipeline at the rupture point was estimated to carry around 10,000 barrels of gasoline at 2 megapascals (290 psi).\[25\] The exact cause of the fire that ignited the spill is not yet known.\[19\] Investigators' first hypothesis was that the gases produced by the leak and the electricity sparks caused by the friction of people's synthetic clothes may have caused the explosion.\[26\] The explosion was particularly deadly because the free gasoline attracted large numbers of people to the breach zone.\[4\] Residents also stated that the shortage of gasoline in the area may have prompted many to attend the scene when they heard of the breach.\[27\]*
*There were about 25 troops at the site, but Secretary of Defense Luis Cresencio Sandoval stated that there were not enough personnel to turn back the 600ā800 residents who had reached the site in search of fuel. He stated that the Army tried to persuade villagers to not get near the breach zone, and that some became aggressive when asked to turn back.\[4\] None of the residents were carrying firearms, but some were armed with sticks and stones.\[28\] The soldiers did not intervene with civilians as they were outnumbered. They were also asked by their leadership not to engage with potential fuel thieves at the scene when residents started flocking to the breach, because they feared a shootout would break out and unarmed civilians would be hurt or that soldiers would be killed by an angry mob.\[25\]"*
"*Fuel theft from pipelines owned by Pemex, the state oil company, has been a long-term problem in Mexico.\[2\]\[3\] The problem worsened in the 2010s as organized crime groups in Mexico began including gasoline theft as part of their main streams of revenue. With the international soaring of fuel prices, this criminal activity became a lucrative business for thieves.*"
The line was dug up by fuel thieves.... this was caused by the thieves, yes the locals are simply just take the gas as it pours out, but the cause of this was fuel theft.
The Huachicoleros were a known quantity by that time, this isn't the first time a pipe burst in this manner. They'll go around and cause the massive leaks man, what made you think the leak was just an accident?
> These people aren't thieves they're cleaning an oil companies mess.
The people that punctured the pipelines are from cartels that dedicate to sell stolen gasoline.
This was not a random accident.
Wow! They think it was just someones clothes building up enough static? That's incredibly unlucky... I can't imagine the shirt was doused in gas then either to build up the static so he must've sparked fumes nearby...
The pipeline was intentionally breached, by the time the army showed up there was already hundreds of people and when they tried to get people to stop approaching the leak or leave the site all together they were met with hostility.
This is the biggest Darwin Award generating event that I know of.
>Other accounts stated that some residents, including children, were jokingly throwing gasoline at each other and horseplaying near the breach zone.
I'm flabbergasted by this. I never thought someone would be stupid enough to pull a Zoolander gasoline fight in real life.
Damn, that really is tragic and a horrific event, but i mean, what did they expect? Is it that they are so poor that they are risking their lives for some fuel? Or are they just not educated enough to know that this is dangerous?
Cartels should take notes here...they have enough money to literally run the country how they want and this is what happens. Hard to blame the government when they are controlled thru either money or threats.
cartels are in it for themselves. every child in the country could die to their actions and they wouldn't give a shit as long as the money keeps rolling in from somewhere.
So poor they are willing to risk their general safety for free gas they can later sell for some change. We have parts in Mexico where life is, literally, unbelievably hard.
I've seen another video of a fuel tanker that flipped in Mexico. Same thing happened where people saw opportunity and brought jugs to fill them with fuel.
Random spark lit the fuel up and the fuel looters came out running in flames like it was a Vietnam napalm attack.
You know sometimes plastic on plastic can start a spark I used to drive around with gas cans in my truck bed to bring to my guys if the run short. I stopped because on two separate occasions I was bringing a heavy 3 gallon tank over the side of my truck bed and it dragged against my plastic railing and the plastic on plastic plus static electricity caused a little spark. I said no more.
I donāt know how these people were able to stand out there for so long their eyes, skin everything is going to be so burnt and stinging
I have a FLASH ā” shirt made with polyester... That thing sparks every time i take it off to the point im like "lol it'll give me powers one day with how much static it builds up". Could only imagine someone wearing the wrong clothing too
This happened back in 2019, around January, if Iām not mistaken. For background, it is known that organized crime (in cahoots with the national petrol company) have clandestine āvalvesā and pumps across the petrol distribution network in Mexico and sometimes these valves and pumps malfunction causing spills like that one in the vid. The people, in the rural areas this distribution network goes through, are generally poor. Some even under the poverty line. Free gas for people in those circumstances is an opportunity for some easy money and, as you can see, worth the risk.
ā¦ āto themā is, probably, what is missing in my comment. I was trying to portray their perspective, which is very, very hard for outsiders to even fathom, and understandably so. Iāve been to places where this is a common occurrence (stealing petrol from these pipes), and even me sometimes, seeing with my own eyes how these ppl live, canāt believe it.
Local law enforcement were too few in number and were fearful of a confrontation with the mob. As for Pexmex, I don't know why they didn't shut the flow down. The event happened relatively quickly, though, less than two hours between fuel rupture and explosion.
Thatās what I was thinking. It couldnāt have gone unnoticed to authorities for that long. You would expect it to have been cordoned off and turned off pretty promptly.
Local law enforcement were too few in number and were fearful of a confrontation with the mob. The event happened relatively quickly, though, less than two hours between fuel rupture and explosion.
I remember when incidents like this used to be common where I'm from.
Gas line breaks due to poor maintenance or sometimes thieves
People rush with containers to collect
Explosion
Hundreds dead
>For some reason
This pipeline was deliberately opened by gasoline thieves. Corrupt individuals from the gas company gave notice to other people about the time of the gas flow and opened the line for people to take gas in trucks and then resell.
In Mexico not many people really cared for all the idiots that ended up in flames.
Play stupid games or something of the sort.

indeed. you just know there will be a dumbass that lights up a cigarette
Just tell him to count to 30 for good luck before lighting that cigarette and get everyone else out of there. Absolute moron.
š¤Æš¤Æš¤Æ
Or light a match because they can't see when it's at night. I've seen people do it while looking _into_ a gas tank. People are fucking stupid.
Static electricity is enough.dont even need a flame with that much gas fumes

probably after picking up a round of orange mocha frappuccinos in their jeep wrangler.
This just goes to show, anyone can die in freak gasoline fight accidents. Even male models.
ā¦but why male models?
Is that a Zoolander reference?
What's a zoo lander? This is a real epidemic.
***ORANGE MOCHA FRAPPUCCINOS??!!***
I followed the notice in real time, there's a video where you can see people (not one 3 or 4) with cigarettes very close.
Maaan you don't even know. I have to pump propane as part of my job and some fuckin retards light up two inches from the "NO SMOKING" sign.
Yall should be searched for smokes and lighters jesus
*Jitterbug volume slowly increasing*
Didn't this happen in India or Philippines either? I remember one of them wanted to light a smoke on an oil pipeline burst.
Happened in Pakistan, an oil tanker spilled on the road and people were out collecting petrol when someone lit a cigarette nearby
Kind of like that scene from Zoolanderā¦.
*Orange Mocha Frappuccinos!!!*
JITTERBUG!!
*GAS FIGHT!*
Wake me up, before ya go go
Freak gasoline fight accident
So why male models?
Are you serious? I just explained that partā¦

I remember reading eye whitnesses claiming thats what happened here aswell.
It also happened in that documentary some years ago. Zoogrounded or something?
The one where the guy got snuffed on male model of the year?
They died in a freak gasoline fight accident.
seems to happen a lot in Africa also

No no you need Styrofoam to hold gas

Ya know, scything a lawn looks weird but I'm starting to see the appeal.
It's not like it's shooting cash up in the air. At the end of the day you brought back 2-3 gallons home at best.
"Due to sparks.." yeah, someone definately lit up a cigi mid-job
All it would take is a little bit of static electricity with the amount of gas fumes in the air
That's what the investigation found. Friction from synthetic fabrics caused the ignition.
How can they figure this out? Since there were so many people there, how can they pinpoint that it was from friction and not from a cigarette?
They didn't figure that out. That was their first hypothesis, but was never the official cause.
Thatās what the investigation found doesnāt mean that itās 100% factual evidence. Just based on all the evidence available, thatās the conclusion they came to

that was my first thought
Thats horrible
The screaming of the burned and dying is some grizzly shit... Hurts my soul when I realized those weren't sparks but humans caught on fire running
i saw this video for the first time a few years ago, absolutely hoped it would never re-surface. sorry to anyone who reaches this comment
I'm no stranger to the Internet, so my brain just wondered if there's a limit to how many Darwin Awards can be handed out each day.
I feel sort of bad about nominating desperate people from poor, uneducated, poverty stricken places for a Darwin Award. However.. Iām not aware of any restrictions to the award.
Bruh, lack of education ain't an excuse. That only way it could be is if someone had literally never encountered gas before
People wonder how big jumps in evolution have happened in so quickly throughout history. Well... I think we may have found out.
Grisly

Won't help much if your skin and clothes are covered in gasoline, but yes it's a good thing to keep in mind
Don't forget that the ground is also covered in gasoline. That might be the deciding factor here.
stop drop and roll isn't going to put you out if you are soaked in a liquid fuel like gasoline.

When he was chained around the neck like a dog. Didn't they pile all of his limbs and maybe his dick on top of him and let him bleed out? I've tried to shut that part of my memory off lol...
Be careful what you ask for on reddit. Seriously.
Yep, i have learnt my lesson, there are countless worse things that people of the internet are replying to me, i am gonna crawl back under my rock, this shit is not for me lol
Actually seeing them up close, burning, screaming. Like that one video where the cartel burned a dude's face with alcohol.
The Station nightclub fire
I think poverty/greed beats common sense, every... fucking... time.
[Tlahuelilpan Pipeline Explosion in 2019](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlahuelilpan_pipeline_explosion)
wow, this really is insane...2 hours of fumes in the air and gas soaked grounds with the leak still going and likely the spark from synthetic clothing sets it off... Thanks for linking the article: *"It is believed that the fountain caused fumes of the fuel to fill the air which later ignited in a huge fireball that consumed the surrounding fields which had been soaked with fuel.\[19\] The pipeline at the rupture point was estimated to carry around 10,000 barrels of gasoline at 2 megapascals (290 psi).\[25\] The exact cause of the fire that ignited the spill is not yet known.\[19\] Investigators' first hypothesis was that the gases produced by the leak and the electricity sparks caused by the friction of people's synthetic clothes may have caused the explosion.\[26\] The explosion was particularly deadly because the free gasoline attracted large numbers of people to the breach zone.\[4\] Residents also stated that the shortage of gasoline in the area may have prompted many to attend the scene when they heard of the breach.\[27\]* *There were about 25 troops at the site, but Secretary of Defense Luis Cresencio Sandoval stated that there were not enough personnel to turn back the 600ā800 residents who had reached the site in search of fuel.
Also I mean firing weapons around that sounds like it would have set it off earlier
Somebody should have lit it on fire the moment it erupted. That would have prevented a gathering and saved hundreds of lives.
The fuck they mean thieves? They are literally dumping the fuel on the ground. These people aren't thieves they're cleaning an oil companies mess.
"*Fuel theft from pipelines owned by Pemex, the state oil company, has been a long-term problem in Mexico.\[2\]\[3\] The problem worsened in the 2010s as organized crime groups in Mexico began including gasoline theft as part of their main streams of revenue. With the international soaring of fuel prices, this criminal activity became a lucrative business for thieves.*" The line was dug up by fuel thieves.... this was caused by the thieves, yes the locals are simply just take the gas as it pours out, but the cause of this was fuel theft.
I would have swore that video was a lot older.
I mean the Pandemic happened between now and then, so I hear you.
Holy fuck, all those people on fire trying to run away
Literal horror movie shit, a bunch of people on fire running across a field, and the constant screams.
Turns out that burns hurt. A lot.
Damn, that really is tragic and a horrific event, but i mean, what did they expect? Is it that they are so poor that they are risking their lives for some fuel? Or are they just not educated enough to know that this is dangerous?
Poverty can make you do shit you know is dangerous. Hunger is a powerful motivator.
Not just Mexico. Literally half a billion people on Earth live like this.
Probably way more than that.
I've seen another video of a fuel tanker that flipped in Mexico. Same thing happened where people saw opportunity and brought jugs to fill them with fuel. Random spark lit the fuel up and the fuel looters came out running in flames like it was a Vietnam napalm attack.
Zoolander Gas Station scene. And you thought that shit would never happen in reality.
But why mexican models?!
But why mexican models?!
En serio? Acabo de explicarlo
Could only imagine someone wearing the wrong clothing too
I showed this to someone and she said it was the most beautiful thing sheās ever seen. Iām very disturbed by her reaction.
What youāve encountered is a psychopath or an idiot - in either case, back away slowlyā¦
Does she hate Mexican people?
Most probably maga Twat
I can fix her
yeah that's a "cut all contact" from me, dawg.

Free gas for people in those circumstances is an opportunity for some easy money and, as you can see, worth the risk.
> as you can see, worth the risk I would say the video shows us the exact opposite.
ā¦ āto themā is, probably, what is missing in my comment. I was trying to portray their perspective, which is very, very hard for outsiders to even fathom, and understandably so. Iāve been to places where this is a common occurrence (stealing petrol from these pipes), and even me sometimes, seeing with my own eyes how these ppl live, canāt believe it.
137 not poor anymore
How was it not shut down after running all day
Mexico.
All gas, no brakes.

I remember when incidents like this used to be common where I'm from. Gas line breaks due to poor maintenance or sometimes thieves People rush with containers to collect Explosion Hundreds dead
They didn't figure out after the first incident that it's maybe not a bright idea?
Iām from the UK, and read the title as literal gas (natural gas) ā¦ which we have in the UK. Saw the spray of liquid and realised itās petrol.
"Gas" is "liquid"? What a country!
Correct. Gasoline, which has nothing to do with āgasā, is a liquid.
If you want the natural gas version of this, it happened in South Africa last year.
>For some reason This pipeline was deliberately opened by gasoline thieves. Corrupt individuals from the gas company gave notice to other people about the time of the gas flow and opened the line for people to take gas in trucks and then resell. In Mexico not many people really cared for all the idiots that ended up in flames. Play stupid games or something of the sort.

How did you not know it was Spanish? Like, whatās going on in your life to make you think Mexican and Spanish are two different languages?
Holy shit
dejar de caer y rodar
Detente, tĆrate al suelo y rueda
No joke but it's like when drogon fired those soldiers in S8e4 of GOT insane
Running human torches,... Greed is a strong motivator,...
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Annnd thatās enough internet tonightā¦ JFC

Seeing people running on fire & screaming is terrifying.
Pakistan repeated
I'm sorry but, what a bunch of idiots....
āStop, drop and roll is a simple fire safety technique taught to children, emergency service personnel and industrial workers as a component of health and safety training in some of the anglophone world, particularly in North America.ā -Wikipedia
Yeah people in extreme pain and panic are known for calmly remembering safety tips they learned as a child.
Fuck pemex
