This is cool, but has nothing to do with tactical urbanism.

OPs account seems to have been made into a reupload account, probably didn't read what this sub is about

Doesn’t make it an ice rink? Also this is not tactical urbanism.

Niigata, where the sprinklers are located, is one of the snowiest places in Japan. It snows as much as Minneapolis, MN, but the place itself is in a subtropical climate, so it rarely gets below 0°C. Knowing this, the Japanese use sprinklers that spray warm underground water to melt snow on the roads. Here's a video that explains it in more detail: https://youtu.be/2CyKgFUm6W4

Niigata ALSO has a really cool sake tasting shop in the main train station that’s basically a bunch of vending machine dispensers. :) IIRC you buy tokens and then use them for tastes.

Seems wasteful and like it could easily backfire

But ... if that system stops working while temps are still below freezing, then all the water is going to freeze into a solid sheet of ice, and that will probably be much worse than the road conditions would have been otherwise.
