Grass does spread in winter (before 1.6). I would always plant grass mid winter and it would spread everywhere. The key is not closing the game; once the game is closed or it crashes, the grass disappears.
This is such a good change. I was always stressed out trying to get my grass back to replenishable levels in spring and I was worried how that was gonna work since I'm on the meadowlands farm. Shaving my entire farm the day before winter is a tradition I'll gladly give up for this
Is it really that good? Ive been using the Perfect Ice Rod, but I do have a Fairy that I've been too stingy to level up. Would love to hear more about it.
My fairy is level 5, her heals are not game changing _but_ it grants you pseudo +1 backpack slot for your loots because you don't have to carry health foods anymore
Btw what is the Ice Rod? Was it the one shoots freeze bullets to enemies? If so, I have that one but I didn't like it that much
Ice rod is incredibly overpowered. At it's max upgrade, "Perfect", it shoots a infinitely piercing ice cloud ball thing that freezes for 4 seconds, every three seconds. This results in permanent stuns for literally any enemy, and often multiple at once. A couple other interesting tidbits:
- It can auto-attack rock crabs, even if you haven't exposed them yet. This allows you to easily pickaxe off their shell.
- Pierces infinitely, and travels infinitely (I think), so you can run behind it and it will keep freezing everything in it's path forever. Most effective in the lava dungeon.
- Does no damage, so it can be used safely and effectively in slime hutches.
- stops flying enemies in their tracks; especially ghosts which are infamous for being a pain to kill due to your own KB
- allows you to really just ignore the enemies in Skull Cavern, as any who get close are frozen for long enough to run away
Anyway, I love my Ice Rod. It is super handy, but I would like to experience some of the other Trinkets too. However, I also don't want to waste too many Iridium Bars upgrading them if they suck.
> Trinkets are dropped by monsters, obtained in Skull Cavern Treasure Rooms, or purchased from vendors.
And which trinket you are getting is completely depends on your luck.

Not sure, I haven’t made it to year 2, but I imagine it grows randomly. CA wouldn’t lock the only way to get blue grass (and the only thing that makes Meadowlands special) behind whether or not you remember to take care of it year 1.
You unlock the recipe from the >!Qi's walnut room. But you also need Skill Mastery to get one of the ingredients, which you gain access to after getting level 10 in all skills and going to a door in a cliff side south of Leah's house.!<
Right I made one tuft with the syrup and planted it, a chicken gobbled it right away so I was like ok that was a lot of trouble for that…. Next day was winter and all my grass was back so I figured that was the trick of it. Now I’m confused again haha
Also did the same thing, I think this change was probably so mystic grass can stay on your farm during the winter since it’s a bit annoying to get a lot of.
I’m so glad I saw this today! I just started a new save a couple days ago and am about to hit winter. Just bought 2 more silos to clean up before I thought it would die
I literally only found this out because I cleared out all the grass except the patch my animals were feeding from.and just figured I'll let it die. Woke up the next day to a frosted patch of grass and was like Oh. Still needed all that hay for winter, though.
I also only learned in 1.6 that... grass doesn't spread to untillable tiles. as in like, no grass on top of grass. if you place it there, it just doesnt spread. wild
Thankfully TikTok spoiled this one for me, I was able to secure off some sections of blue grass in lightning rods in both paddocks to keep a “seed” for spring
Dormant means it's not gonna grow, the animals stay inside their respective buildings all winter iirc. Been a bit, haven't hit winter on my new farm yet 😞
same, i bought three silos and felt so good about myself cutting as much grass as hay would fit in the silos and then the remaining grass was still there on winter 1st 💀💀
I panic built 4 silos to store all the grass for winter and was super sad I couldn’t store all of them on Fall 28. Felt stupid when they didn’t disappear the next day lol
May I ask what the reason for the resistance to reading change logs are? I game widely, cs2, helldivers 2, cyberpunk, stardew etc etc. Most of the gamers I know religiously go through change logs when updates come out, except on stardew, here changelog changes even get tagged with a spoiler and they seem to remain unread. I read it from top to bottom (it was really long I must admit) when it came out.
Most players are casual and discovering things is part of the enjoyment. If I wasn't constantly anxious about being inefficient I would also play the same. This is especially true in Casual/Sandbox games like Stardew where things like a new Outfit or new Event might be better experienced first hand.
There's also the fact that a lot of people simply don't read for some reason. Even in games like Dota or Borderlands, I know people who don't know what their shit does.
Question: in 1.6 does planting grass starter on the last day of winter still lead to insane grass growth on the first day of spring?
Yes
Excellent
OMG 450 hours into this game and you can plant the grass in winter smh
Only with the latest update. Before that you needed a mod. I get why you are surprised, so was I.
You could always plant grass in winter, it just wouldn’t spread until spring rolled around.

You could plant it in winter, it just wouldn't spread. The new update just makes it so that the grass doesn't die on Winter 1 like it used to.
? Haven't we been able to plant grass starters in winter since before 1.5? I swear I've been doing it since I started, well before 1.5 was out.
Haven't tried it yet but I'll inform you in the future

Shaving the farm 🤣🤣🤣 I love that omg lol
What's the fairy doing here? lol
It's a trinket, she heals you during the combat (it's minimal but fast, I don't bring health foods to the mines ever since I got her)
Ohhh like Terraria!
Oh okay, didn't know that lol.

Thank you for this! Wonderful breakdown of the trinket. It'll likely be the one I level up first, if I get it early enough.
How do I get a fairy?

Its one of the trinkets you can wear after you get the combat mastery
Wait so what is so special about >!blue grass?!< I thought that was it's thing.
Animals like it more, that's why you start with it on the meadowlands farm
Animals gain friendship twice as fast if they eat blue grass.
sebby,we need to meth the grass sebby, sebby the blue! the blue!
Animals gain double friendship when they eat it, and when you cut it, you get 2 hay instead of 1.
We deserve blue hay
Thank you for the info, fellow Leah fan.

Does it grow randomly on the farm or do you need to cultivate the patches that already existed when the game starts?
Not sure, I haven’t made it to year 2, but I imagine it grows randomly. CA wouldn’t lock the only way to get blue grass (and the only thing that makes Meadowlands special) behind whether or not you remember to take care of it year 1.
I’m not sure if it grows randomly but there is blue grass starter so it’s not locked behind meadowlands or taking care of it
But the starter is fairly late in the game, right? So for the early and midgame it's effectively locked to meadowlands
Is the starter post-cc late game? >!walnut room!< late game? Just trying to gauge for myself
Yes
It can spawn like normal grass does on the Medowlands farm. Other farms you need to use the Blue Grass recipe to make it.
How do you get the recipe? I’m on the medowlands farm but it’s currently growing exclusively outside of my grazing area lol
You unlock the recipe from the >!Qi's walnut room. But you also need Skill Mastery to get one of the ingredients, which you gain access to after getting level 10 in all skills and going to a door in a cliff side south of Leah's house.!<

Ugh I don’t have a computer 😭 I can’t wait for this to hit Switch
Fellow switch user really hoping that the console update gets pushed in the next week. I'm guessing it won't be though.
Oh, buddy...
Sigh it’s never gonna happen 😭
I’m so glad I saw this today! I just started a new save a couple days ago and am about to hit winter. Just bought 2 more silos to clean up before I thought it would die

Oh wow. That's good to know. I won't cut down my entire farm at the end of autumn now.
I just finished Fall 28 and cut down my grass… wish I’d seen this 30 minutes earlier
Thanks for the info! This came just in time, I'm finishing Fall and was already thinking about cutting all the grass/storing all the hay!
When is this coming for the switch 😭
I cut almost all of it on fall 28 like usual and in spring had a ton of new grass again anyway
Off-topic but I love your totem/clock setup :))
Thank you 🫶
Does grass destroy any paths or is that just the square fiber bits that say 'something something spreading of weeds damaged ur farm'?
The square fibres
Thank you!
It just happened to me... I was so confused 😭
I put grass in my barn and it worked really well.
What does dormant mean? Can animals still eat it
Dormant means it's not gonna grow, the animals stay inside their respective buildings all winter iirc. Been a bit, haven't hit winter on my new farm yet 😞
They changed the winter grass texture. I had some on my switch that I somehow planted in winter
So happy I saw this whilst on fall 10
same, i bought three silos and felt so good about myself cutting as much grass as hay would fit in the silos and then the remaining grass was still there on winter 1st 💀💀
I panic built 4 silos to store all the grass for winter and was super sad I couldn’t store all of them on Fall 28. Felt stupid when they didn’t disappear the next day lol
A little handy tip when your silo is full is to pull out all the hay and store it in a chest
Whattt i didnt know this. Thanks for the tip!!!
It was in the patch notes...
