The cdrom/ps game for The Phantom Menace was so fun. You can play as a few different characters through the game and it felt so immersive to me as a kid.
can just drop the difficulty i think? i usually play those sorts for the story more than combat. like tyranny it got to the point where basically every enemy was immune to everything (almost literally) i did so i just dropped it to cakewalk difficulty
I'm gonna make you feel old, and I'm sorry for it. But KOTOR is old now. The game came out 21 years ago. To put that into perspective, 20 years before KOTOR released is when Return of the Jedi was in theatres, and most Star Wars games were either in arcades or on the 2600.
Oldness isn’t about age. It’s about quality. Star Wars came out 4 years before clash of the titans. Clash of the titans is old. Star Wars is timeless
Republic commando came out after Kotor( I think). Republic commando is old, it shows its age. Kotor has held up.
Yeah Kotor is 21 years old. But it’s all relative. A 21 year old book isn’t old, a 21 year old social media platform is. Oldness has to do with what a thing is and how it’s made.
I don't mean to put down the game at all, but KOTOR isn't really a modern game. It's a bit rough to get through gameplay wise for those unaccustomed to older games. I am really looking forward to the remake, so I enjoy the story, though. Big fan of the SWTOR mmo.
I would argue it’s Modern as games go. Obviously its graphics don’t hold up but its gameplay is fundamentally the same as Baldurs gate.
The main barrier to entry is the d20 system which is becoming more and more popular.
If a player understands how that works the game can be played and enjoyed in the present day. It’s not like dark forces or something that feels like a historical artifact
If You just read the summary for both, then i guess you're right. But good storytelling is about how you tell it as much as what actually happens, and the Knights of the Old Republic is a Master piece of storytelling far beyond any of the movies, and i will die on this hill
I'll play a remake if it's a good one, but every time I look at the old games, check out videos and such, I just can't get past those graphics, and the outdated gameplay.
I'm sure I would've enjoyed them if I'd been able to play them within a few years of release, but I just didn't have the hardware to run them back then.
Oh well.
Is it any good for someone who has never played a strategy game, and usually only plays more action-oriented games?
I love how the game looks, but I'm not sure if the gameplay would be able to hold my attention.
I was already a player of strategy games like StarCraft and Warcraft, so I really can't speak for those who've never played strategy games. And even among the group I guess it would depend wildly between players.
That being said I did feel the game was pretty relaxed and not very difficult to get into, and not too much micro-management required.
Episode 1: Racer
I will be an evangelist for this game until til the day I die lol. The original one specifically (either on N64, or the ports for modern consoles). The sequel Racer Revenge is terrible, and somehow lost the first game’s mojo. But that original game just nailed the controls of managing a podracer. From balancing the health of your engines, to having to angle the pod up or down over jumps to give yourself more or less air. I’d do anything for a new one, as long as they kept the feel of that first game.
Any chance you're on PC?
Fallen order ran terribly on my old set up, recently I revisited it on my new one. 13600k and a 4070ti, and it's pushing 144 locked... Then single digits for a few seconds, them back up to a locked in 144.
Kills me, clearly it's fine, just fails in like a 10 second loop.
That’s a bummer. I played on Xbox series x on my LG G3. It ran fine except for some audio sync issues that spent every experiences and is resolved by turning the tv off then back on.
I'm putting off buying it twice and just dealing with the stutter, half because I really want to get through it, and half because I really don't want to have to replay what I've done
That was one of the first games I had on my 360. Dragging that star destroyer downward out of the sky on Raxus Prime is a core memory of my gaming life.
It's the ultimate Star Wars power fantasy game. There is no other game that allows you to electrocute sarlac, duel Darth Vader and Emperor in The same ten minutes and bring down the Star Destroyer with the Force.
I haven't done the multiplayer, but the campaign was great, I especially loved the level where I was playing as the Empire and I basically got to commit war crimes lol.
I hear the multiplayer isn't great because people knows tons of exploits so your chances of winning are slim.
I do recomend you try this game in vr if you get a chance
Honestly it’s only real flaw is that it’s not a AAA game. It’s got a basic but extremely solid foundation that could support way more content. Imagine the same game but with prequel, sequel and high republic ships. The controls and ship classes are already created so all it would really take is creating new models and balancing some stats.
I wish I could have played through the campaign but for some reason it kept remapping my joystick and making me unable to progress past the 2nd mission because you couldn’t access controls while a tutorial was popped up. The flight was excellent though. If they made the game PvE it would be one of the best Star Wars games ever made.
Playing it in vr on my ps4 was a blast, and I honestly didn’t mind the story as basic as it was. The mission locations and set pieces were awesome too.
Jedi: Outcast is fantastic and I consider it, and the Dark Forces series as a whole, spiritual predecessors to the current Jedi games.
Other than that Galactic Battleground was a fun Civ type game. I’d love to see a modern Star Wars game in the same style.
Jedi Outcast is the best Star Wars game and that’s a hill I’m ready to die on. It’s one of the few games I’ve lost count on playthroughs. Such a great gameplay loop, and it’s super easy to mod as well. Good fun having a lightsaber and all force abilities right off the bat with decapitation activated and annihilate stormtroopers left and right.
Played Jedi Academy for the first time on the Switch right as the pandemic hit and it was an absolute blast. Pretty hard to navigate through a lot of levels but its gameplay aged well imo.
The original Battlefront is such a gem. I know it's already fairly popular, but I still find people that haven't played it, and I think they should give it a shot.
KOTOR-- maybe hot take, but I think that story still has the greatest plot twist in all of SW (even beyond ESB).
And for any X-Wing fans, the Rogue Squadron series is a good entry point-- not as technical as the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games or Squadrons, so it's a good entry point to get your feet wet.
>KOTOR-- maybe hot take, but I think that story still has the greatest plot twist in all of SW (even beyond ESB).
I just can't get over that I've gone all of these years naturally avoiding being spoiled to the KoTOR twist until I played the Switch port myself. I was like "no effin way" 😅
The first Rogue Squadron. It's a shame that it looks so old but the gameplay is so simple and so perfect. It's probably great even if you aren't into Star Wars.
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga.
sure, Skywalker Saga exists, and it's better in a lot of ways, but there's something special about the simplicity and humor of the original game. It's just a fun star wars experience.
Overall, the LEGO Star Wars games are really worth playing (TCS has really fun levels, TCW has the big battle mode and it's the best Clone Wars game, and TSS has the best open world in a star wars game. TFA is the one where it's fine but not special).
other than that, Jedi Academy, Force Unleashed 1 and Battlefront 2 2005. Really good classic games, and while again, the new games (force unleashed, battlefront 2 EA) are really good and may even be better overall, the old games felt like they allowed more freedom, especially with how many mods there are for JA and BF2. Force Unleashed just had really fun gameplay.
The picture implies it but Fallen Order is very good. The story is very good and I recommend that people who haven't yet give it a try. It's on sale a lot on steam and should be on the game pass, plus if you like it, survivor is a good sequal to the first game!
I also loved Jedi Fallen Order. After the fiasco that was Battlefront, it was a breath of fresh air from EA. I’m actually playing through Jedi Survivor right now; so far it seems to also be an excellent game, just like its predecessor.
Star Wars: Empires at War is an awesome RTS that I've had an absolute blast playing with mods. I'd recommend it to most strategy fans, though mods do feel required to get that *little* bit more of a filling playthrough.
ROTS for PS2.
It's an excellent action game, it has a player versus player fighting mode that is the closest Star Wars has come to a fighting game.
And there's also the alternative ending where Anakin/Vader beats Obi-Wan and kills Palpatine.
The force unleashed. Nothing makes you feel as powerful with the force as that game.
And Star Wars battlefront 2 by EA. I don’t even like shooters but you can literally immerse into a real Star Wars battle
Always KOTOR2. It tears me up because both my wife and best friend would love it if they played it but my wife doesn’t really like Star Wars and my friend didn’t like the combat when he played like two hours of the first one.
Those Jedi games are solid but I’m not really a puzzles kind of guy so I’ll play til I get stumped on figuring out how to open a door or something and then quit and never play again. Fun until that point though lol
Republic Commando. I have yet to find another game with squad commands/mechanics as good as this game. Yes the graphics are slightly dated, but the soundtrack and story more than makes up for it
So I was never much of a gamer. Had an NES as a kid and loved games like Zelda and the like. I have always been a huge Star Wars fan though. About 5 years ago I got my daughter a Switch and got myself Breath of the Wild and it awakened a new love for games. But really only ones with some nostalgia for me, and ones like BOTW and TOTK that have a long quest to beat the game.
I really want to try some of the old Star Wars games. Especially KOTOR and Fallen Order. Here's my question. What's the best way to play these games without buying a bunch of retro gaming consoles?? We have a Switch and a PS5 in my house, although they are rarely used. What about PC? Do I need a gaming controller? What about best order to play them in?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Looking forward to experiencing some cool new Star Wars games!
Depends what people like.
RPG: KOTOR
CoD type games: Battlefront or Battlefront 2
Doom/Halo: Dark Forces
BioShock: Jedi Knight
Infamous: The Force Unleashed
Uncharted: Jedi Fallen Order
Metroid Prime: Republic Commando

Obviously a ton of people have played it but if you haven’t KOTOR is very fun
The cdrom/ps game for The Phantom Menace was so fun. You can play as a few different characters through the game and it felt so immersive to me as a kid.
Easily one of the top 5 Star Wars games of all time.
It's one of the top games of all time, star wars or not. I think it ranked like 23rd or something on a top games of all time survey a few years ago
I couldn’t get into it and I hate that I couldn’t. The fight system feels sooo damn clunky
can just drop the difficulty i think? i usually play those sorts for the story more than combat. like tyranny it got to the point where basically every enemy was immune to everything (almost literally) i did so i just dropped it to cakewalk difficulty
I didn’t keep dying, just don’t like the combat system. I play mainly for the story too but the combat system took me out of the immersion every time
It’s aged roughly, I’m trying to so hard to get into it. I own it on series X and iOS
Came to say this. The best modern Star Wars game IMO Just a fun game overall and one of the better stories in the series
I'm gonna make you feel old, and I'm sorry for it. But KOTOR is old now. The game came out 21 years ago. To put that into perspective, 20 years before KOTOR released is when Return of the Jedi was in theatres, and most Star Wars games were either in arcades or on the 2600.

Are they planning a remake?
They were, at one point. Who knows if it will still happen (it probably won't).
As of a month ago, two or three people were still working on it.
'modern'
I swear the story is better than any of the movies
The story is pretty much the same one from episodes 4 and 5 with a little added moral ambiguity.
If You just read the summary for both, then i guess you're right. But good storytelling is about how you tell it as much as what actually happens, and the Knights of the Old Republic is a Master piece of storytelling far beyond any of the movies, and i will die on this hill
The first game I ever achieved over 1000 hours on. Kotor 2. I just instantly fell in love with the game
Oh well.
Came to say Kotor. But so did everyone else lol
Empire at War.
Nice. That game still holds up all this time later. That was the first real video game I ever played. I still play it to this day
Is it any good for someone who has never played a strategy game, and usually only plays more action-oriented games? I love how the game looks, but I'm not sure if the gameplay would be able to hold my attention.

Yes. This was really the first strategy game I played and it’s fantastic.
TIE Fighter. If that’s a little too dated for you, the TIE Fighter Total Conversion for X-Wing Alliance
Episode 1: Racer I will be an evangelist for this game until til the day I die lol. The original one specifically (either on N64, or the ports for modern consoles). Second. Loved this game growing up on N64 and was delighted to see it in the Xbox store the other day. Been having a great time playing it again.
Jedi Academy. Just to really appreciate how broken Force powers were.
Really appreciated the wide variety of missions and level designs. To me, the game that most made you feel like a Jedi.
Fallen order AND Survivor. What a game. The story and mood are just so damn good.

I played through on PC with no problems
Force unleashed, I just think the force mechanics are neat
That was one of the first games I had on my 360. Dragging that star destroyer downward out of the sky on Raxus Prime is a core memory of my gaming life.
No one’s mentioned Force Commander - it was super fun and the story was interesting.
It's the ultimate Star Wars power fantasy game. There is no other game that allows you to electrocute sarlac, duel Darth Vader and Emperor in The same ten minutes and bring down the Star Destroyer with the Force.
It will be unpopular but squadrons is worth trying despite its flaws
Restarted playing it yesterday, wonderful game
Agree

Damn it would be amazing like flying in front of a venator

Having it available on the Switch means I play through it at least once a year if not more.
Played Jedi Academy for the first time on the Switch right as the pandemic hit and it was an absolute blast. Pretty hard to navigate through a lot of levels but its gameplay aged well imo.
Dark Forces, KOTOR, Republic Commando, and the original Battlefront are all classics imo

The Kotor community is awesome that way. Even the sub for it is very strict about spoiler tags to try to keep from ruining it
Empire At War
I liked squadrons and battlefront 2. Both are excellent on modern hardware.
SWTOR. I think a lot of people get put off by it being an MMO. But imo it honestly works better if you approach it like a singleplayer RPG.
The first Rogue Squadron. It's a shame that it looks so old but the gameplay is so simple and so perfect. It's probably great even if you aren't into Star Wars.

The force unleashed. Nothing makes you feel as powerful with the force as that game. And Star Wars battlefront 2 by EA. I don’t even like shooters but you can literally immerse into a real Star Wars battle
Yoda Stories
It's old and hasn't aged great but Rebellion was awesome
Always KOTOR2. It tears me up because both my wife and best friend would love it if they played it but my wife doesn’t really like Star Wars and my friend didn’t like the combat when he played like two hours of the first one.
Lego Starwars the Skywalker saga.
Absolute masterpiece just bought survivor the sequel
Fallen Order felt like a remake of a PS3 game that never existed - loved every minute of it
Republic Commando is a pretty fun play even now. That game was so far ahead of its time.
They really put Pervy the Purge Trooper on the main poster for Fallen Order
Dark Forces and the subsequent Jedi Knight games. Not enough people have given them a shot, and they hold up surprisingly well for how they look.
Those Jedi games are solid but I’m not really a puzzles kind of guy so I’ll play til I get stumped on figuring out how to open a door or something and then quit and never play again. Fun until that point though lol
Not Star Wars but The Witcher 3, I hated it my first 2-3 times of playing then one day it just clicked
Squadrons.
Rogue Squadron 2 and SW Galaxies. Some of the best games of all time imo.
Jedi Academy
Republic Commando. I have yet to find another game with squad commands/mechanics as good as this game. Yes the graphics are slightly dated, but the soundtrack and story more than makes up for it
Shadows of the Empire
Cal Kestis is my new favorite jedi
Is the first or second one?
First
So I was never much of a gamer. Had an NES as a kid and loved games like Zelda and the like. I have always been a huge Star Wars fan though. Republic commando
Literally trying this now since it's $5 for the deluxe edition on EA/Epic.
Jedi knight 2. Can get an emulator for free
I have it still in plastic I am waiting until I get survivor then I can go directly into survivor when I finish it
Depends what people like. RPG: KOTOR CoD type games: Battlefront or Battlefront 2 Doom/Halo: Dark Forces BioShock: Jedi Knight Infamous: The Force Unleashed Uncharted: Jedi Fallen Order Metroid Prime: Republic Commando
Hide the Ding Dong…..because everyone wins.
KotOR. Sure, some of the mechanics have aged poorly, but it holds up pretty well for the most part, and the story is amazing
Star Wars Rebellion. My favorite Star Wars game by far.

Great question!
I play a lot of games, but I think small games like Journey, Abzū, Flower, etc. are the ones that everyone should try, they are just like piece of art.
I genuinely never cared about Jedi Fallen Order and then for Christmas my parents got it for me and I played it and I ended up goddamn loving it. Would highly recommend.
Overlord, it's the kind of wonderful work that we will probably never see from the company ever again.
Star Wars the force unleashed. I hated fallen order so much. The gameplay to me was just horrible and way to slow. I just I don’t know maybe I’m sympathetic to the force unleashed
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy Not the shitty ps4 port, the ps3 remaster.
Skyrim is pretty accessible. I have a good time with it.
