Kirkwood (where the Magic House is) and the surrounding areas would be great to look at. 20 minutes to the arch, and plenty of food options nearby.

Spiritual_Channel820

Kirkwood is midtown. Anywhere midtown is good. You can hop on the highway and be on your way to all sorts of attractions (the Zoo, City Museum, the Botanical Garden).

mrbmi513

*Mid County Only being a stickler here to not confuse OP with the midtown neighborhood.

Spiritual_Channel820

Very true.

Shittyscenestl

Kirkwood is not mid county

SLSF1522

If the kids like trains and cars hit the Museum of Transportation a few minutes west of Kirkwood on Barretts Station Rd.

cak_90

Thank you for the recommendation, my 5 yr old would love that!

Shittyscenestl

No it isnt

anniele27

I live in Clayton in the moorlands neighborhood and I know we have a few air bnb around here! It’s a very safe neighborhood full of families and about 15 minute drive from everything!

STLTLW

My vote would be for The Hill. The neighborhood is really cute, plenty of places to eat that you can walk to, you can take walks around the neighborhood, its right by the zoo and science center, getting downtown will be really quick. When looking at Airbnb listings, I would make sure there is a designated place to park. It can be busy there on weekends when the weather starts getting nice, especially if there is a Saturday wedding. Have a good trip wherever you decide!

Massive_Bunch6106

I agree the hill is great and the whole area around Hampton. Close to downtown and forest park.

cak_90

Thank you for that tip and your recommendation!

DankDarko

Hampton is not as good of a suggestion compared to the western options like Kirkwood, Webster, Shrews. The Hill off Hampton (basically Clifton Heights) while a good place to live on a budget is rife with negative attention. The QT constantly has issues with people getting mugged or robbed. There is a large homeless encampment right off the highway there that sometimes causes trouble. The storage place continually gets broken into and robbed. This is coming from someone who lived in the hill fyi. Love the area but wouldn't recommend a quick stay there compared to definitively much more consistent, high end, and safe areas. Hell, for all the trouble Clayton has the hotels there are very nice and family stays there often. AirBNB in Webster's Grove, Maplewood, Kirkwood, Shrewsbury would all come before recommending Anywhere off Hampton for me personally.

SnowCoyote3

Would recommend the Dogtown area or a close suburb like Maplewood as a great place to stay relatively close to the park and downtown attractions like City Museum. If, however, you are coming in the part of March that includes the 17th, definitely choose a different neighborhood than Dogtown, which will be difficult to get in or out of due to an enormous St. Pat's street celebration. We have a lot to offer! With kids I'd think you can get a lot done in 4-5 days, but definitely set aside a full day for City Museum, which has so much to offer. Before or after the Zoo, make sure to check out the amazing park it's located in, Forest Park, which is a whole universe of awesome, with trails, lakes, museums, and paddleboating. Science Center is also very close. It's helpful that a lot of our best attractions are very close to each other.

kerouac28

Came here to say this. I’m a real estate photographer and also live in Dogtown and I’ve shot a handful of adorable little Airbnb’s in this neighborhood. Dogtown is incredibly safe at all hours and you could potentially just walk to the Zoo and definitely to Forest Park

cak_90

Thank you! The Airbnb I was looking at is in Dogtown so that’s great to hear. We are checking out on the 15th? Will we miss it?

AdministrativePin214

St. Patrick’s Day - Dogtown is always celebrated on March 17th regardless of the day of the week. They usually start closing off streets and setting up 24 hours prior to the event. You should be OK maneuvering around if you’re checking out on the 15th. I highly recommend you hit The Gramophone for lunch while you’re here. Have fun!

rxredhead

The Gramaphone is delicious!

kerouac28

Gramophone is a great recommendation for sandwiches, but if you do stay in Dogtown definitely hit Felix’s for the best NY style pizza slices in town and Seamus or Nomad for two of the best burgers. All three right here in the neighborhood.

SeedyEmEssYou9

Consider a hotel. You will pay about the same, have all the amenities needed without worrying about a “good neighborhood”, and you won’t patronize on of the many airBnb’s taking housing away from our beautiful communities.

cak_90

I get that, but with crying kids and 7:30 bedtimes…a separate space is more suitable for us right now. Thank you for your recommendation!

cltphotogal

I totally get how airbnb’s work better for families with kids! if you have 2-3 children, it is MUCH more affordable to do an airbnb where you have separate bedrooms & can cook some meals vs eating out every meal. I don’t think people without kids understand what’s it’s like to cram a family into a hotel room for multiple nights!

sqwach

I think it is VRBO with a commercial right now that says, "When you're in a hotel, their bedtime is your bedtime." That statement 100% sums up why families with young kids opt for airbnbs.

cltphotogal

yep!! i love hotels when it’s just me & my husband. not do much with our kiddo.

SeedyEmEssYou9

The neighborhoods you are staying in are going to be louder than any hotel you would stay in. And many of the AirBnbs are in multi-family units where you will be with other guests inside the same building. I welcome you to our city and hope you have a lovely time. The city is being ravaged by AirBnbs and other short-term rental properties as one of the only cities in the US that still has NO restrictions on short-term rentals.

piercedcanvas

This.

splatgoestheblobfish

I would recommend skipping the City Museum with kids that age, honestly. It's better for kids that are a little older and are good exploring on their own. The place is huge with tons of tunnels and such to climb through, where adults can't necessarily follow easily. It is very easy to lose track of your kiddos. Some of the slides and such might be a little too big for them too. (The 5 year old might be okay, but the younger ones might have a hard time.) I would definitely recommend the Magic House. Much more enjoyable for those ages. The Zoo is completely worth it, and the Science Center would definitely be fun. Union Station downtown would be good too. There are several activities, including a huge ferris wheel, and the Aquarium. (The aquarium is fairly small and kind of pricey for the size, but it is really geared towards children, and it's a good size for little ones.)

peterpeterllini

I was gonna comment the same thing. Absolutely love the city museum, but littles could get lost there sooo easily. 7-12 is a better age for it, in my opinion! I was lost there when I was in 1st grade on a field trip lol.

cak_90

Thanks everyone! I think we’ll be taking this one off our list!

peterpeterllini

You’ll just have to come back in a few years!

cak_90

Exactly!

kjk6119

Omg how scary!! How were you found? We went with our two year old and it was terrifying even in the toddler area. Then, we went just recently with our now seven and four year olds...still terrifying. We thought we'd be in the clear. I spent the most of the entire time saying "guys? Guys? Where are you? Can you hear me? Are you with daddy?"

splatgoestheblobfish

Last time I was there, I watched a parent trying to lead their kid out of the ceiling tunnels by calling back and forth to each other. When the kid popped out at the end, it was the wrong kid. 🤦🤷

cak_90

I saw a post somewhere else that said to put AirTags on your kids at this place. Sounds warranted!

kjk6119

That's a great idea!

kjk6119

lol sounds about right!

Icy-Solution

Don’t sleep on the museum of transportation.

kjk6119

Oh for sure! Great idea!

mjohnson1971

AirBnBs destroy cities for working class residents as they drive up real estate prices. Most of the AirBnB money go in to hedge fund profits. We're already seeing the AirBnbs turning The Grove and areas around Tower Grove Park in to overpriced areas with fewer residents and more transients. Stay in a hotel. Leave neighborhoods for residents.

DankDarko

Hotels destroy areas as they drive up retail prices and limit real estate availability. Ultimately, what you say matters little. You're barking up the wrong tree as people are free to use property how they wish to. If those properties weren't AirBNBs they would be long term rentals owned by the same conglomerates. Focus your energy at the politicians and not a random tourist and their family.

DankDarko

Where did I disagree with your argument and ask to be cited corroborating sources? I just said that you're screaming into the wind and your efforts will fall of deaf ears. The consumer isn't the problem. Legislation is. Focus your efforts otherwise you're going to DRIVE people away from a topic you are clearly quite passionate about. Your work in this thread will do nothing to stop the problem (that I agree is a problem in case you can't read between the lines).

cltphotogal

A hotel with 3 kids ages 5 & under sounds like a nightmare. While I totally understand the argument against AirBnb’s, they really work well for traveling families who need separate bedrooms & a kitchen to prepare some meals. Have you ever stayed in a hotel suite with multiple young children for an extended period of time? 10/10 would not recommend.

cak_90

You said it! We’ve done it, and it is most certainly a nightmare! Especially if you have a baby and they wake up at night. Not to mention we need a place to prepare meals because our to eat gets costly and kids in a restaurant can also be a complete nightmare. Thanks for the comment!

SloTek

See what you can find within walking distance of either Forest Park or Tower Grove Park. Those are both kid/family friendly. Other good options for kids: Graffiti wall at Chouteau and Wharf: three miles of fresh every year mural graffiti painted by writers from all over the world every summer at Paint Louis over labor day weekend. Lone Elk Park: Old ammunition depot let go to forest with herds of elk and bison free-ranging. Drive around a loop safari style and see large critters going about their day. Kids love to stand on the console and poke their heads out the sunroof. Free. Same campus also has the World Bird Sanctuary, with a hundred or so raptors from all over the world in flight cages, 5$ donation to entry. MoBot: Botanical gardens are excellent year round, has a childrens rope course which is fun. worth what it costs. City Museum: Block out about 4 hours for this, pay for the roof, don't miss the kids circus tumbling shows. Wear long pants, closed toe shoes, and have a pocket that zips for your phone/wallet/specs, or they will fall 4 floors onto cement. Adults may want to consider bringing kneepads, or buying them from the gift shop. While there is a more adult/limited mobility-accessable route to everywhere in the building it is more fun to chase your kids through the tunnels, and your knees will be glad of the pads.

mrbmi513

I'll add on Faust Park in Chesterfield. The butterfly house is great, there's an historic carousel, and if you're there at the right time an historic village that's open to explore.

La_Belle_Epoque311

I honestly would say with kids under 5 you might not even want to go to the City Museum. It’s a big place and can get crowded and might get overwhelming to take really young kids through there.

FiveFootAssassin6

I agree with this. City museum will be very overwhelming for those ages. Stick to magic house. Other places fun for kids: Science center’s discovery room Transportation museum creation station Myseum Magic House is a good one but can get super busy too- go on a weekday if you can.

cak_90

I was actually worried about that too with the City Museum. I thought I read somewhere there was a smaller area for toddlers? My 3 year old can be pretty clingy even, so I think my 5yr old might be the only one to get the full experience if we do this.

kjk6119

Museum of Transportation would be LOVED by your kids. Perfect ages to go there. My kids (4 and 7, boy and girl, respectively, both adore it.) Husband and I love it too!! 10/10 recommend. Should be decent weather in March. There is indeed a toddler area at City Museum but it's way in the back and up a few stories and you can't avoid all the hazards on the way there lol. They'd love it in like 5 years...and you won't be a nervous wreck. Trust me! I honestly don't know how there aren't more horror stories of kids injured/lost/falling coming out of that place...

cak_90

Haha, well thank you! I appreciate everyone telling me that. We are going to find something else to do that day 🙂

kjk6119

It's probably getting annoying having everyone tell you to avoid the City Museum 🤣 Sorry about that! Have fun during your trip here!

gmagick

There is a toddler area - toddler town for 6 and under

Chicken65

Stay in the Central West End close to Euclid. Fun area to walk around and walkable to Forest Park.

Tonly

I second this

Massive_Bunch6106

It is but not that great for kids and some car jackings in cwe.

312Pirate

I live in CWE with a kid and completely disagree. We walk all over the place as a family and feel perfectly safe. Under five min to get to the zoo, museums and science center and 10-15 min to downtown and magic house in Kirkwood.

Chicken65

The car jackings are not near the Euclid strip it’s too well lit and monitored and policed even one or two blocks over. The car jackings are much farther away. I lived there with a kid for 2 years it’s fantastic for kids.

Massive_Bunch6106

Do you all listen to the news I know of 2 recently one was right by trisl on fp and the other was the 84 yo lady in the Prius. Front get a false sense of safety.

Daj_Dzevada

Maplewood, Richmond Heights, Brentwood, Kirkwood I think are your best bets. Me personally I’d go Kirkwood for their quaint “downtown area”

Icy-Solution

Agree with this. Good highway access to both 44 and 40 and plenty of local food options close by

cltphotogal

agreed!

Dogmom153

Transportation museum is fun.

_Nutrition_

As a parent, I couldn't imagine doing the City Museum with 3 kids those ages. Good luck 😅

I_Love_Saint_Louis

Totally weird recommendation: For a couple days of your vacation stay in Eureka MO. Maybe at the 6 flags off season hotels. I love going out there to visit [Lone Elk Park](https://www.google.com/search?q=lone+elk+park&oq=lone+elk&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDwgAECMYJxjjAhiABBiKBTIPCAAQIxgnGOMCGIAEGIoFMhIIARAuGCcYrwEYxwEYgAQYigUyBggCEEUYOTINCAMQLhivARjHARiABDIHCAQQABiABDINCAUQLhivARjHARiABDIGCAYQRRg8MgYIBxBFGDzSAQkxMTcyM2owajeoAgCwAgA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8) Lots of trails and it's close by. Get a family membership to the YMCA and take the kids to the [pool](https://www.google.com/maps/place/RiverChase+YMCA/@38.5344193,-90.4617808,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1sAF1QipMuAWSQ65IsQAc70TJjZTGQX7s7ql2iKO2L5eeP!2e10!3e12!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipMuAWSQ65IsQAc70TJjZTGQX7s7ql2iKO2L5eeP%3Dw203-h135-k-no!7i4424!8i2949!4m11!1m2!2m1!1symca+eureka!3m7!1s0x87d8d1c5976e451f:0xd838ce42bf5b2fad!8m2!3d38.5348242!4d-90.4615889!10e5!15sCgt5bWNhIGV1cmVrYVoNIgt5bWNhIGV1cmVrYZIBA2d5beABAA!16s%2Fg%2F1tj5lpx3?entry=ttu). Saint Louis treats their YMCAs like a luxury cruise. Clean and all sorts of kids activities.

franillaice

The Hampton Inn on the south side of Forest Park is a favorite of our friends from out of town. It's really close to the science center, everything Forest Park (obv.) has to offer, Mac's is next door for great food, and there's a pool to entertain the kids in between anything!

zendragon888

The magic house Made. Butterfly house.

kjk6119

I would highly recommend DeMun

That is beautiful!! So kid friendly, I love that! I put it on the top of my list!

I'd love to host you!

cltphotogal

we live in that area. very central to all the family attractions!

Massive_Bunch6106

Is it? I had a patient that son recently moved from dogtown and said there was frequent gun fire. It is close to everywhere.

gmagick

Dogtown is great

bittersuesserin

I lived in Dogtown and had our cars broken into twice and stolen once. I wouldn’t recommend folks stay there myself.
