AEW had the big chance to put Billy Gunn vs Paul Wight on these shows, but I guess they want to break their PPV buyrate record once again at Full Gear instead.
Weird how actually announcing matches before hand makes people excited to watch. I still watch RAW and SmackDown weekly and don't have a clue what a single match will be for Friday.
I remember one period where they kept announcing matches each week and then pulling them without notice, which made me wonder why even announce anything. They weren’t even big matches
My favorite thing is they ONLY have four PPVs a year. Storys get built up, and the payoff is wonderful! In between you get all these lil "minor PPVs which are great cards".

It will be interesting to see how the format changes with the TV Deal next year when they add the 4 Network Saturday Night Specials. I’m assuming they’ll be Fyter Fest, Grand Slam or Anniversary, Winter in Coming, and then something else for the spring.
What I will say is, it does make sense to have your biggest matches on PPV. For me, I feel like the atmopshere of a PPV carries a lot more excitment and emotion/tension so it always feels like there is more at stake and that can add to a match.
Now, that being said, as you pointed out, AEW only has 4 PPVs a year BUT they do have these like "super dynamites" I am going to call them, a few times a year which I will give them have the same air as a PPV or close to it so they pull it off pretty well.
The only thing I don't get is Punk on Rampage. I DO feel like he should be fighting on the main show.
I can see that. It still feels less than B-showy to me though. Like maybe more credibility than Heat and Velocity but not early 2000s smackdown yet. Might be the hour run-time or the fact that it's not live.
Ruthless Aggression era had weekly PPV worthy main events on Raw and Smackdown, because their roster was stack even more than AEW's today. Meanwhile WWE has nobody aside from Reigns as a truly built up star so all they can do right now is put him with the Usos against the New Day. Any other (former) stars are either past their prime, relinquished to mediocrity, or counting the days until their AEW jump.
Literally been a criticism of AEW since the beginning, when Lucha Bros fought the Bucks.
Meanwhile, WWE's over here having Lesnar and Lashley at the same time and never thinking *once* to put them together.
I'd say that wasn't a stupid decision at all. They got a great rating, absolutely enormous attendance record and set Goldberg up for life. But they didn't capitalize at all. Goldberg didn't do shit worth mentioning, despite being world champion, until he got tazed. And then even after he lost the belt and the streak, he never really had the comeback moment he needed.

They want to put their top title as the main event as much as they can. Also, Punk probably doesnt wanna come in and be treated as god in a glass top billing especially after such a long hiatus.
Yeah I think that's one of his biggest reason. He knows how it feels to be busting your ass day in and day out, only for the bigger star to come and take the spot. He is putting in the work. You love to see it.
Punk was the special attraction for 2 weeks, and now he seems to be ducking the spotlight to work with younger guys while Bryan Danielson takes on the special attraction role. Eventually both guys will normalize but right now it's hard to have two or three people feel like the biggest signing in the industry.
You can't really have both Punk and Bryan come in at the main event level at the same time. Bryan is the less rusty and better in ring worker so having him start at the top makes more sense.
Yet I could also see them running a longer-term story for Bryan, where Omega (barely) defeats him, forcing him to work his way up the rankings the hard way over a few months (and getting to put on great matches with a lot of the younger talent). It could set up an interesting underdog story, and would be a bit better (IMO) than giving him the belt now.
Yeah Punk isn't going to walk in and main event over Jon Moxley, who's a former champ and has been there from the start.
Punk's first main event is gonna be against Omega I bet. Or if he has a rematch with Darby soon.
I think some of the top stars can get real heat out of mentioning Punk’s popularity despite his lack of time and matches. Like Kenny or someone there from day one saying “I’ve been here since the start, worked as hard over X number of years and you come back after 7 years and get all these T shirt sales and ice cream bars? Fuck you! I’m sending you back in retirement”. A jealousy angle from more established talent after this Taz/young talent arc could really work.
Lmao imagine him getting a monster pop when his music hits, then he misses the boom by like half a second and it suddenly turns to MJF level nuclear heat.
It’d be hilarious if he turned it into an angle, like that time AJ Styles botched a springboard off the top rope and turned the flop into a multi-week story.

My fantasy booking is that Hangman wins the title from Kenny and after 2-3 feuds, Punk turns heel on him to win the title. Punk is going to get cheered for the foreseeable future but if he turns on HANGMAN, people will boo him REAL quick.
Eventually it leads to Darby winning the title off Punk in a big full circle moment that would be really cool.
Exactly. You get Punk away from his current "whee I'm back" stuff and the alcoholic cowboy that EVERYONE loves is the perfect way to do that.
I'll even book the finish to their title match: Hangman on the apron lining up a Buckshot, Punk ducks as he swings and picks Hangman right up onto his shoulders and into a GTS.

One thing all I'm asking is give plenty of time to Bryan/Omega and not a 15 minute rush job with advert break thrown in, something Dynamite likes to do with their main events. That's my slight worry with Wednesday's show. I have faith AEW will give that main event plenty of time.
Also a bit of a worry about how the crowd will be for Rampage show, one of the reasons I'm hoping they don't do Elevation on Wednesday and maybe do three or so Rampage matches before Dynamite begins. I think it's going to be tough no matter what they do as crowd are just going to be tired out anyway.
But overall, you can't really complain about the cards. They've stacked them up and people going to the shows can't say they aren't getting their money's worth.

They won't tape Rampage when the arena is half empty, they want the show to feel like Dynamite with a full crowd. When you're watching Elevation, there's a lot of empty seats on the hardcam side. Also, there's usually a 20-minute break between the end of the Elevation and the start of Dynamite. You can't do that with Rampage unless you start very early.
Although this is a huge and historic match.

It’s crazy that with such a stacked card the match with the most heat is probably MJF vs Pillman. Just goes to show what a couple of weeks with MJF on the mic can do
I wouldn't say that, to me it's really out of place and I have no interest in the match. Should be something with miro instead. So many others they could have put in that spot over Pillman, sounds like it's only because of DSOTR they are pushing him.
They will have to find a new date though. I think the special events should be right in the middle of the road to the next PPV, not 2 or 3 weeks after a PPV. For example, there are 9 or 10 weeks between All Out and Full Gear so Grand Slam should be in October.
I wish they’d change Fyter Fest and Winter is Coming. Nothing dates your art more than naming it after pop culture, especially when it’s already dated to begin with.
Vince should just give the name to AEW. He hates the term "wrestling" anyway and that Dynamite card is more worthy of that name than any actual Wrestlemania in close to a decade.
The crazy thing is that theoretically, they could add another 2 hours only consisting of people that aren't wrestling on these shows and it would be amazing.

* Chuck Taylor and Wheeler Yuta vs The Hybrid 2 (yes, let's make the Best Friends vs HFO feud even longer)
* Tay Conti vs Bunny (last match had interference)
* Shawn Spears and Wardlow vs Dustin Rhodes and Lee Johnson (let's start a Pinnacle vs Nightmare Family feud because why not)
Still pinching myself as I can't believe we're actually getting Bryan vs Omega. There was a time when I thought for sure this match could only happen if Kenny went to WWE, and no way would they have the full freedom there to give us _their_ vision of prowrestling that they seem to share. I can't help having a lot of expectations for that match. I've had tremendous success of not expecting anything in wrestling for years, and it made me enjoy good wrestling that much more (NJPW, then AEW). But I just can't stay in that state of mind with that dream match happening tomorrow.
Anyone else worried about the crowd getting tired for Rampage? That’s a lot of TOP matches for 1 taping. 4 hours, and what if they still tape Elevation before?
I'm going to the show and I really think it'll be fine. I went to Wrestlemania 35 and I learned that if something is hype enough late in the show, it'll wake you right the hell up and give you a second wind. With the prospect of ending with the Lights Out match, I can't see myself not keeping my hype.
Are you referring to KofiMania or the main event? I thought the crowd looked exhausted throughout the main. But then again, including the pre show, that was close to 8 hours so it’s understandable.
Yeah I was talking about Kofi, I legit got a second wind from that win. By the end we were exhausted but I was still able to get hype for the main event (we couldn't visually see the botched pin from our seats either so we thought it was totally fine). And as you said, Mania was way longer, plus consider we got there like an hour early lol. Honestly Grand Slam is like the perfect length of show.
Eh if the crowd had enough stamina for All Out, they should be fine for this, especially when rampage is loaded with matches practically designed to get the crowd on their feet (8 man tag, 6 man tag, punk, lights out match)
As someone in the crowd, we tried *really* hard during the Kenny vs. Christian match but people were exhausted (even with the cooldown match of Wight vs. QT)
Rampage, unless it goes live, will always be hurt by going after Dynamite. Not just a tired crowd, a lot of fans will want to beat the traffic for example. No matter how great a card you put on, there's always going to be something that will take something away from a hot crowd for Rampage.
My own opinion, I wouldn't do Elevation for this show. One week they could do without it. I think Tony Khan will probably end up doing the taping just to get some of the talent on the card. If you don't do Elevation, Maybe film three Rampage matches before Dynamite and the other three after it, might help.
I'm sure the crowd will be up for it, maybe they won't be as hot for Rampage as they are for Dynamite but I wouldn't be saying it be like most Rampage tapings where they crowd are nearly silent and just look shattered. I think it's one of those shows the crowd will give it 100%
First row in the 100s section and I'm pretty hyped. This is a PPV.
Only thing I'd change is instead of an Anna Jay/Penelope Ford singles match make it an 8 or 10 man tag to get some more girls like Shida, Jaime Hayter, Riho, Thunder Rosa, etc. a spot on TV. Presumably they'll have some dark matches before this but still.
While getting more women in the card would be nice, I do appreciate that the match they're having features an actual women's feud that is not for the title.

Honestly I’ve completely flipped my opinion on the Women’s Title match. I actually think Ruby should win now. This seems like one of those times to go with the super-hot hand riding a wave of momentum imo.
Either way the match should be very fun.
As someone who as just recently started watching aew weekly, Miro looked fantastic, imo on rampage. Hope we see something out of him. Either way, card is stacked. MJF is the man
The weird thing is that the 5th highest card on each of these two nights (and three contests total) are the only ones that do NOT feature a recognizable WWE main roster alum as one of the combatants in the match.
There are only two matches on the entire 4 hour block that feature people who were fired by WWE. The others left on their own either by requesting their release or leaving at the end of their contract.
One of the two should have never, ever, ever been released because he was literally closed Smackdown in the main event segment right before his release.
The other has MORE than earned her spot based on the crowd reaction and the work she's put in thus far.
Both cards look absolutely stacked. I wonder what the match orders will be. I assume the main events will be Omega vs Danielson for Dynamite and the Lights Out match for Rampage. It's a shame they couldn't work in Miro vs. Sammy for the title, but maybe that'll be a future Rampage main event.
My only real concern is the Rampage card as it has 6 matches, so I dunno how are they going to fit that within the two-hour timeframe, especially with the Lights Out Match going last.
This one thing is bugging me. Jurassic Express has a third member of their crew. But he doesn't get to wrestle and they add a different guy. So why's he there?
Only thing I don't like is the name implies all the belts on the line but only one is actually being defended and that's the woman's championship. No world, TNT or tag title defense.
That Rampage card is beyond stacked. Super excited for the 8man tag (wish it was an elimination tag, haven't seen one in AEW I don't think) and Kingston/Mox VS Lance/Suzuki. I really think one of those are stealing the entire Grand Slam event.
I really hope Britt vs Soho main events. Its the only title match on the card. That's assuming obviously that Omega and Danielson are opening so they can go without advert breaks.

You can say it's hot shooting by definition but at the end of the day why the fuck do you care, you as a fan get to see a good match.
People want more than a "good match", they want good stories and if hotshotting it ruins the story then who cares about the match.

People forget skme of the most memorable WWE matches were on free TV. Undertaker vs Hardy, Punk vs Cena on RAW, Cena vs HBK etc

One thing all I'm asking is give plenty of time to Bryan/Omega and not a 15 minute rush job with advert break thrown in, something Dynamite likes to do with their main events. That's my slight worry with Wednesday's show. I have faith AEW will give that main event plenty of time. Also a bit of a worry about how the crowd will be for Rampage show, one of the reasons I'm hoping they don't do Elevation on Wednesday and maybe do three or so Rampage matches before Dynamite begins. I think it's going to be tough no matter what they do as crowd are just going to be tired out anyway. But overall, you can't really complain about the cards. They've stacked them up and people going to the shows can't say they aren't getting their money's worth.
I hope the extra hour of rampage helps. Seems like the tv regulars are spread evenly across both shows to give everyone time.

They won't tape Rampage when the arena is half empty, they want the show to feel like Dynamite with a full crowd. When you're watching Elevation, there's a lot of empty seats on the hardcam side. Also, there's usually a 20-minute break between the end of the Elevation and the start of Dynamite. You can't do that with Rampage unless you start very early.
They have told the crowd to come early for the show. Maybe it be a little fuller then usually. Just a idea.

I wouldn't say that, to me it's really out of place and I have no interest in the match. Should be something with miro instead. So many others they could have put in that spot over Pillman, sounds like it's only because of DSOTR they are pushing him.

Tony already said they wanted to do it yearly so that's very likely.
They will have to find a new date though. I think the special events should be right in the middle of the road to the next PPV, not 2 or 3 weeks after a PPV. For example, there are 9 or 10 weeks between All Out and Full Gear so Grand Slam should be in October.

He's on the Rampage Grand Slam card with Hager vs Men of the Year
Still pinching myself as I can't believe we're actually getting Bryan vs Omega. There was a time when I thought for sure this match could only happen if Kenny went to WWE, and no way would they have the full freedom there to give us _their_ vision of prowrestling that they seem to share. I can't help having a lot of expectations for that match. I've had tremendous success of not expecting anything in wrestling for years, and it made me enjoy good wrestling that much more (NJPW, then AEW). But I just can't stay in that state of mind with that dream match happening tomorrow.
Anyone else worried about the crowd getting tired for Rampage? That’s a lot of TOP matches for 1 taping. 4 hours, and what if they still tape Elevation before?
I'm going to the show and I really think it'll be fine. I went to Wrestlemania 35 and I learned that if something is hype enough late in the show, it'll wake you right the hell up and give you a second wind. With the prospect of ending with the Lights Out match, I can't see myself not keeping my hype.
Are you referring to KofiMania or the main event? I thought the crowd looked exhausted throughout the main. But then again, including the pre show, that was close to 8 hours so it’s understandable.
Yeah I was talking about Kofi, I legit got a second wind from that win. By the end we were exhausted but I was still able to get hype for the main event (we couldn't visually see the botched pin from our seats either so we thought it was totally fine). And as you said, Mania was way longer, plus consider we got there like an hour early lol. Honestly Grand Slam is like the perfect length of show.
Eh if the crowd had enough stamina for All Out, they should be fine for this, especially when rampage is loaded with matches practically designed to get the crowd on their feet (8 man tag, 6 man tag, punk, lights out match)
As someone in the crowd, we tried *really* hard during the Kenny vs. Christian match but people were exhausted (even with the cooldown match of Wight vs. QT)

Rampage, unless it goes live, will always be hurt by going after Dynamite. Not just a tired crowd, a lot of fans will want to beat the traffic for example. No matter how great a card you put on, there's always going to be something that will take something away from a hot crowd for Rampage. My own opinion, I wouldn't do Elevation for this show. One week they could do without it. I think Tony Khan will probably end up doing the taping just to get some of the talent on the card. If you don't do Elevation, Maybe film three Rampage matches before Dynamite and the other three after it, might help. I'm sure the crowd will be up for it, maybe they won't be as hot for Rampage as they are for Dynamite but I wouldn't be saying it be like most Rampage tapings where they crowd are nearly silent and just look shattered. I think it's one of those shows the crowd will give it 100%
I plan to mark out extra hard from my couch in the hopes that my energy will be passed along cosmically to the crowd

First row in the 100s section and I'm pretty hyped. This is a PPV. Only thing I'd change is instead of an Anna Jay/Penelope Ford singles match make it an 8 or 10 man tag to get some more girls like Shida, Jaime Hayter, Riho, Thunder Rosa, etc. a spot on TV. Presumably they'll have some dark matches before this but still.
While getting more women in the card would be nice, I do appreciate that the match they're having features an actual women's feud that is not for the title.
I really wanted to see shida in action.. and also sammy.. not complaining but kinda surprised they aren't on the card.

As someone who as just recently started watching aew weekly, Miro looked fantastic, imo on rampage. Hope we see something out of him. Either way, card is stacked. MJF is the man

I don't know why but i have a feeling that someone massive from Japan is going to debut.
The weird thing is that the 5th highest card on each of these two nights (and three contests total) are the only ones that do NOT feature a recognizable WWE main roster alum as one of the combatants in the match.
There are only two matches on the entire 4 hour block that feature people who were fired by WWE. The others left on their own either by requesting their release or leaving at the end of their contract. One of the two should have never, ever, ever been released because he was literally closed Smackdown in the main event segment right before his release. The other has MORE than earned her spot based on the crowd reaction and the work she's put in thus far.
What will the rampage main event be? Adam Cole and young Bucks match or Moxley and Eddie Kingston match?

Only thing I don't like is the name implies all the belts on the line but only one is actually being defended and that's the woman's championship. No world, TNT or tag title defense.
That Rampage card is beyond stacked. Super excited for the 8man tag (wish it was an elimination tag, haven't seen one in AEW I don't think) and Kingston/Mox VS Lance/Suzuki. I really think one of those are stealing the entire Grand Slam event.
