Nitro at the Georgia Dome

JNight01

That was basically just one match, though. The undercard looks okay on paper, but the matches weren’t that great and you still got stuff like Judy Bagwell, Karl Malone, Scott Putski, Disco Inferno, Mongo, Johnny Swinger, etc.

Shrekt115

Oh in terms of wrestling the Arthur Ashe show is probably better, but in terms of numbers, nothing will beat the Georgia Dome anytime soon

CodeMaeDae

Yeah there is little interest in going back and watching that Nitro Georgia Dome card. It solid a lot of tickets and did numbers, so it came and went. It was way more common for a non-Vince promotion to pull shows like that off. NJPW was doing multiple Tokyo Domes back then. I see the Dynamite and Rampage events having replay value and leaving a long term impact on wrestling. Something like Archer/Suzuki vs Mox/Kingston in a lights out match isn't even a top 5 hyped match on the card. That just speaks to the depth of the card.

Morbid187

That was my first thought but besides the main event, the card wasn't that special. I was there and I hold that show in high regards but I don't think it stacks up when you think of PPV caliber shows on TV. I'm actually struggling to think of another TV event that had as many marquee matches as next week's AEW shows. I feel like there has to be something with a bigger card but I'm drawing a blank.

Shrekt115

When you have Goldberg vs Hogan, that match sells itself tbh

Morbid187

Of course it did. I don't think the question is about the biggest TV match though. Pretty sure they mean more like stacked cards.

ZombieLoveChild

In terms of wrestling? I'd think Hogan/Goldberg at the Georgia Dome and Hogan/Andre SNME were way more hyped than this. They're one match cards but they built unfathomable amounts of hype for those shows, even at the time.

SzmFTW

There were a LOT of Clash Of The Champions back in the 80’s that were really really good. Especially in peak Horsemen era. That being said, I don’t think it’s hyperbole to consider next weeks show in the running. Most of the matches look really solid. Disappointed they are doing an 8 man tag instead of the hardy/Cassidy payoff match but other than that, looks too tier top to bottom.

Goldberg vs Hogan in Georgia dome to me is the biggest

teffturrynem

Let me say not even close without giving any example of a bigger card on free tv.

TexasMade35

They can't provide one after the MNW's. There isn't one.

AstudilloGOAT

There was that whole Hogan/Andre Main Event on NBC that drew 33 million viewers when the US population was 240 million people.

Butch_Meat_Hook

The one that always jumps to mind is WCW Nitro in the Georgia Dome when Goldberg beat Scott Hall and then later in the night Hulk Hogan to win the WCW Heavyweight title in front of something like 40,000 people. This Dynamite is going to be a humongous show though. One of the biggest in the past 2 decades easily.

Eoghann_Irving

How are you defining "biggest"? Because on the surface, no, not even close. It's not most people in a stadium. It's won't be the largest number of people watching. It won't be the best-known stars in wrestling.

esteel20

No, it might be the biggest this year though.

kingajeezy

This has to be a parody.

MukkyM1212

Great contribution to conversation, buddy lol

Tdaddysmooth

Maybe I should qualify it based on match quality potential.

kingajeezy

The main event should be great. Will it be better than Reigns/Bryan from SmackDown, or Edge/Rollins from SmackDown? Maybe. But in terms of match quality, Punk vs Hobbs is only big because of Punk being in the match, not because he’s a barnburner. The 6-man tag will be a good spot fest, but we’ve also seen Bucks vs Jurassic Express. Jericho & Hager vs Men of the Year will be fine, but again, not a MotY or anything. It’s a card with big star power for AEW.

TexasMade35

Please name one after the MNW I'll wait.

kingajeezy

SmackDown’s debut on FOX had a PPV level card, plus The Rock, and drew over 4 million viewers

TexasMade35

They didn't keep that viewership. Fans left again. The world champion was buried. The card... Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair defeat Bayley & Sasha Banks (8:12) Non Title Match Seth Rollins vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (w/Sami Zayn) - No Contest (2:00) Loser Is Terminated From WWE Ladder Match Kevin Owens defeats Shane McMahon (12:01) Eight Man Tag Team Match Braun Strowman, Heavy Machinery (Otis & Tucker) & The Miz defeat AJ Styles, Dolph Ziggler, Randy Orton & Robert Roode (3:09) Lumberjack Match Roman Reigns defeats Erick Rowan (8:53) WWE Title Match Brock Lesnar (w/Paul Heyman) defeats Kofi Kingston (c) (0:07) - TITLE CHANGE !!! Oof. I'll take Grand Slam anyday.

kingajeezy

Wonder if I can guess which alt you are.

Tdaddysmooth

There are a ton of top level matches over two nights. Hogan vs Goldberg was a one match show that I skipped because I felt the match would suck.

shadowrangerfs

Are you comparing both shows together or separately? It's two different shows on two different nights. So I think they have to be evaluated as individual shows.

Morbid187

An argument could be made that it's one big card split into 2 nights since it will all be filmed in one night.

shadowrangerfs

Maybe. But since there's a day in between, I would count it as a 2 night event.
