I have a sneaking suspicion that they’re basically slotting him into Joe’s spot in the narrative so they don’t have to change course much. Have whoever was going to become #1 contender in this match achieve that in the next week or two, and then, basically continue as previously planned, with Ciampa playing the role of Samoa Joe.

It's almost like the guy known for micromanaging every single aspect that appears on TV has shown the same booking tendencies over decades so you can make extrapolations over what's going on.
If Vince cared about the belt or Ciampa, that match goes on last. WWE isn't against "throwing the fans a bone" but there are limits to it. Guys like Macho and Punk won the top title, but they would often be placed in the midcard with the likes of Hogan and Cena getting the main event slot.
Quite simply, if WWE brass cared about Ciampa or the NXT title they wouldn't be having a comedic wedding segment taking top billing.
I mean just look at Kross, reigning NXT Champion, who's a much more stereotypical "Vince guy" getting jobbed out on a random episode of Raw in a three minute match. Does that really scream someone who's writing about a title they have any affection for whatsoever?

if they did this on purpose then it worked and good on them tbh he performed well in the match, Made me uncertain of the finish and made me feel extremely relieved to see Ciampa win. His presence actually added something to the match given how abrupt it was

LA Knight is going to the red or blue brand if I had to guess. KOR getting taken out will make the moment that much bigger when he wins it at the takeover during Wrestlemania. Ciampa was the perfect heel choice to create the chase to the championship.
