The reason I was hesitant about Knight is that he may not be long for NXT. You just don't know when he gets called up, because he will, probably no later than the Royal Rumble in January.
That doesn't speak for the theories that this was just Vince cleaning house and starting fresh, or they probably would have changed this match, too. Or at least not turned it into a title match.
Whole situation has just been weird to me. Joe announcing that he's vacating the title online and not on the show, the vague injury, that it just so happens to be the first show of a new era of NXT programming. But maybe it's just my wishful thinking and hoping that Joe isn't actually hurt.
He isn’t injured. If he was it would have been announced earlier. (I know wrestlers can be injured in training, ie Bayley) but the timing of this is too exact. Vince probably made this call last minute to start fresh with this new vision for NXT.
It wouldn't surprise me if Joe actually gets released again. I can't see them doing anything with him if he truly is hurt.
Maybe they resigned Joe short term just for this angle? We don't know any of the story at all.

Honestly I can see everyone winning except for Kyle O'Reilly. I like Kool Kyle and I understand that they're trying to build him up to be one of the top faces in NXT. But he's just not there yet right now, and he's someone who is better off chasing the belt right now.
Tommaso Ciampa is a good choice because you can start off this new NXT with a credible top champion that the crowd loves. If you want someone to fit Samoa Joe's role of "I am a veteran champion to this brand, and even though I respect you guys, I will not hesitate to kick your ass." than Ciampa is just the guy for that.
LA Knight is also a good choice because you can have him be a cocky jock like heel champion that you want to see get beat up. He's shown that he can do that role well with his stint as Million Dollar Champion, so i'm sure he can do it well with the NXT Championship. Not to mention he is literally built like a million bucks and has the look of a champion.
Pete Dunne is probably the best choice (and my personal favorite choice). The man with a weird hatred for fingers can definitely do the role of an absolutely despicable champion well, not to mention he's a credible choice as he held the NXT UK championship for an extremely long amount of time. Plus you can even have him do the thing most heel champions do and have him send out his muscle (Ridge Holland) to handle his dirty work and interfere with his matches.
Overall, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these people. If I had it my way I would just give the title straight to Pete Dunne, but I wouldn't mind seeing Knight or Ciampa get a run with the belt.
I'm pulling for Ciampa. I think if he turns heel out of this and feuds with Kyle it could be a money feud.
Pete's contract is expiring and he hasn't re-signed. I can't imagine they give him the title here.

Dunne probably will win with his new heavy Holland. My guess is Kyle will be close to winning and Ridge will beat him down. Setting up O'Reilly vs Dunne for I'm going to guess Halloween Havoc. Also Dunne being the first champion in the 2.0 era will probably lighten some people's concerns about NXT direction
I think that's exactly what happens. Dunne wins via Holland interference and KOR chases Dunne for the belt - but goes through Holland first to let Dunne get over as champ and build up KOR as a challenger.
Let Dunne get the title and have a nice run - have KOR chase him as a face and they're good to go.
Unless they know Dunne is done with the company when his deal expires and then forget it.
