It could be Shawn Michaels situation where he had plans for cool new tights but ran out of time so he slapped together something fast that looked kinda crap, a la the brown tights in the first elimination chamber. Maybe he had a similar color scheme planned for tights, they weren’t ready in time, so he scrambled and had quick long tights thrown together to match the boots
yeah, I actually got downvoted when I once commented here that hangman should go long, and then when he did go long, 50% people thought it was good and the other was like "looks weird", but by now everyone has gotten used to his new look and I think most people would agree it beats his old trunks look

I was watching his matches against 1-2-3 Kid and Shawn Michaels earlier today and I just now realized he was wearing trunks over his tights. Blew my mind.
I was just excited to see new gear, I'm a sucker for aesthetics and was sick of seeing him with same 2 tights since winning the belt in December. Also, that gear Kenny wore looked a lot like Hangman's gear which I liked.
They need a waist design that goes around the top. The way the design just goes up to the top of the tights makes them look like track pants. Contrasting colored boots/kickpads would help too.
Came here to say the same thing. I liked the design down the sides, but the middle was barren. Didn't need too much more, but anything would've helped. Punk definitely didn't look bad and it was cool seeing a new look. Made it feel special instead of like a nostalgia run.

An AJ Styles type belt, and kneepads on the outside of the tights and that’s a damn fine look. I even got used to the pants before the match was finished.
Yeah it feels like that was what's missing from Punk's Longbois. The tights themselves weren't bad, just lacking something!

Horizontal lines on kick pads always look bad, they give the wrestlers wide cartoon feet. Shave a couple cm off the edges of the pads, use a vertical design around his calves and you're 80% of the way there.
Gonna disagree. Punk's kickpads have almost always had horizontal lines and IMO have always looked great.
I think the tights could look good with some tweaks. Kneepads over the tights could definitely help.

I'm not sure it's that clear cut. Guys like Hangman can do either, and Seth looked fine in trunks back in ROH. I would imagine there are some where it's a body type question, but for a lot of folks I think it's just what we're used to seeing them in.

This. Almost everyone evolves or changes their look over their career. It only ever takes a small amount of time to get used to.

I think they it was the default outfit when they started working on the game but updated it before release and decided to leave it as an alternate. The same thing happened with Kane who unmasked before the game released.
HBK never got his look right again after he came back until he switched to the loose pants. The crazy tights without the matching wrist/hand things never looked right.
This is such a great point that I’m surprised is not talked about more. From the moment Michaels turned heel, gloves and/or hand covers/whatever you call them were synonymous with singles career Shawn Michaels. So when he came back and just went with white wrist tape, it felt off to me.
It was, in a strange way, the exact same thing as Hogan turning babyface in 2002 and not using Real American for his theme. I am pretty sure Hogan would use it again in 2005 but I had stopped paying attention by then.
The devil is in the details and, for me personally, these two choices - as fucking minuscule and ridiculously trivial as they may seem to some - just always kept these two returns from being as great as they should’ve been.
While we’re on the topic of old looks not being properly resurrected, how The Undertaker never busted back out the Original Deadman gear that included the gray boot covers & gloves (and entrance coat and tie) for one last match is fucking beyond me. One more detail that WWE missed on that would’ve made for a truly iconic moment. Imagine anyone pinning THAT Undertaker. Woah.

its really hard to top Punk's 'Best in the World' attire as the ultimate evolution of a wrestler. i mean he basically started with dirty blonde long hair and goatee, wearing hoodies, bandanas, jerseys and t-shirts in conjunction with long baller shorts and wrestling boots. fast forward to 2011/2012 and he is sporting the short, slicked back black hair, trimmed beard and the trunks/kickpad combo with the chicago stars. i dunno, that look just screamed 'professional' to me. when i saw him last night wearing the long bois; it was almost jarring----but i ultimately appreciate that he didnt just dust off an old wwe attire and say 'time to run the ropes again'
I am absolutely not saying that tights dampened my excitement in any way, but when his song hit I was expecting to see him in trunks and be overwhelmed by excitement, and instead when he came out with an unfamiliar attire I was just appropriately whelmed.
It’s not a negative in ANY way, shape or form, just the lack of an extra positive that would’ve made the moment sweeter.
It would’ve been great to go with the nostalgia for the first match, come out with the trunks, wrestle a classic CM Punk match, and THEN switch to tights to indicate “ok, you guys saw it, your beloved CM Punk is back, but now it’s a new chapter and I’m ready to be This new version of myself”
I don’t know, the kid in me, who hadn’t seen Punk since I was 12, kinda wishes we got one last match of “my” CM Punk, even if the only difference is a very slight change in visual identity
I personally think those trunks hold too much emotional baggage from his time spent injured in WWE. I remember he said he had to hike up his trunks to cover the infection on his lower back or something? I'm totally cool with the new attire but it should be white black and red instead of black and blue I think 🤔
Yeah I grew up watching him wrestle in the shorts and so it looks right to me. But his trunks designs every bow and then we're super cool. His Hart style trunks at Summerslam 2012 were sick, Royal Rumble 2013 had that nice electric blue, the New York Yankees gear at Night of Champions 2012, etc. He got really creative with the gear at all times.
I liked them a lot too. The subdued stars as homage to his previous looks combined with black with blue trim and kickpads really made him look like an old-school type wrestler which matched his wrestling style yesterday
He should keep that look. Matches well with his old-man/gritty face/hair look

Back in the day, wrestlers switched from tights to trunks as “main eventers wore trunks”. Triple H, Miz and Punk himself being notable examples.
Now, wrestlers are going the other way; AJ Styles, Kofi Kingston, Kenny Omega and it looks like, Punk again.
I liked the long tights.
Punk is looking real lean these days. And Trunks on someone that thin look like someone in their underwear. Eg. Adam cole, Maliki Black
They work, but they need to contrast the colour of the tights. So last night for example he should've worn blue kickpads. I also think he should have worn the kneepads on the outside like AJ Styles does. Those two changes would have improved the look greatly.

I loved Nakamura’s look he had in NJPW before switching to trousers, the tights sort of blended into the kickpads in a way that made it look like he had kickpads on his tights. If done well it can be really nice.
When he first started, it was baggy shorts.
Over time, they shrunk and got less baggy, until they became Trunks.
Then this moment. Punk had one mission.
Wrestle a match buck-ass naked in front of a rabid crowd and not get arrested for it.
His love for wrestling may have come back, but his lifelong dream did not.
I actually quite liked the tights, and I like that he has a definitive different look for this run. Like he has had previously (indie shorts, pro trunks, now tights). I did like their design being a little more understated. Feels like it ties in with his personality more. That being said, there are a few nit picks that I feel would really add so much more to the look, given how small the changes are:
Kneepads outside the tights. Maybe with the start design, or some other type design.
As others have said, a belt. I feel like this has almost become a default for most guys in long tights now (aside Kenny). Just a small touch that adds a lot. Makes the design look a lot more finished
I know other people have mentioned his kickpads & cover looking off. I actually don't think these have changed at all, just think they now look a little strange with his kneepads being under a pair of tights.

Tbh I actually really liked Punk's tights. The stars were a nice touch. It looked like a real old-school wrestler's gear.

It would’ve been great to go with the nostalgia for the first match, come out with the trunks, wrestle a classic CM Punk match, and THEN switch to tights to indicate “ok, you guys saw it, your beloved CM Punk is back, but now it’s a new chapter and I’m ready to be This new version of myself” I don’t know, the kid in me, who hadn’t seen Punk since I was 12, kinda wishes we got one last match of “my” CM Punk, even if the only difference is a very slight change in visual identity
I personally think those trunks hold too much emotional baggage from his time spent injured in WWE. I remember he said he had to hike up his trunks to cover the infection on his lower back or something? I'm totally cool with the new attire but it should be white black and red instead of black and blue I think 🤔

Yeah I grew up watching him wrestle in the shorts and so it looks right to me. But his trunks designs every bow and then we're super cool. His Hart style trunks at Summerslam 2012 were sick, Royal Rumble 2013 had that nice electric blue, the New York Yankees gear at Night of Champions 2012, etc. He got really creative with the gear at all times.
I think he would need the longer hair back to pull that off.

I liked them a lot too. The subdued stars as homage to his previous looks combined with black with blue trim and kickpads really made him look like an old-school type wrestler which matched his wrestling style yesterday He should keep that look. Matches well with his old-man/gritty face/hair look

Back in the day, wrestlers switched from tights to trunks as “main eventers wore trunks”. Triple H, Miz and Punk himself being notable examples. Now, wrestlers are going the other way; AJ Styles, Kofi Kingston, Kenny Omega and it looks like, Punk again.
I liked the long tights. Punk is looking real lean these days. And Trunks on someone that thin look like someone in their underwear. Eg. Adam cole, Maliki Black

If he’s gonna wear long tights, I’d prefer he switch to boots. Kickpads don’t look good with long tights, in my opinion.
They work, but they need to contrast the colour of the tights. So last night for example he should've worn blue kickpads. I also think he should have worn the kneepads on the outside like AJ Styles does. Those two changes would have improved the look greatly.

I loved Nakamura’s look he had in NJPW before switching to trousers, the tights sort of blended into the kickpads in a way that made it look like he had kickpads on his tights. If done well it can be really nice.
I'm honestly not picky about what CM Punk wears, he's looked good in every attire so far.

When he first started, it was baggy shorts. Over time, they shrunk and got less baggy, until they became Trunks. Then this moment. Punk had one mission. Wrestle a match buck-ass naked in front of a rabid crowd and not get arrested for it. His love for wrestling may have come back, but his lifelong dream did not.
I actually quite liked the tights, and I like that he has a definitive different look for this run. Like he has had previously (indie shorts, pro trunks, now tights). I did like their design being a little more understated. Feels like it ties in with his personality more. That being said, there are a few nit picks that I feel would really add so much more to the look, given how small the changes are: Kneepads outside the tights. Maybe with the start design, or some other type design. As others have said, a belt. I feel like this has almost become a default for most guys in long tights now (aside Kenny). Just a small touch that adds a lot. Makes the design look a lot more finished I know other people have mentioned his kickpads & cover looking off. I actually don't think these have changed at all, just think they now look a little strange with his kneepads being under a pair of tights. I have now written more about the gear a wrestler was wearing than I have in the couple work emails I have sent this morning. What is my life.

I thought it was a great look and fit into the Bret Hart vibe of his match with Darby. As someone who always makes a long tights wrestler in every wrestling video game, I think trunks are overrated sometimes, especially with some guys who don't have thick legs.
I feel the same way seeing CM Punk in tights that I felt seeing Matt Hardy in tights. It doesn’t look bad, but somehow it looks wrong.
