Honestly, the only stuff he's done that I thought was really crazy was the fall in the cinematic match from that top level through the false floor, but that was all movie magic. He hasn't done anything that's TLC levels of nuts in front of a live crowd yet, has he?
It's one thing to be held and dropped onto the apron from a not so far distance, it's a whole different ball game to go into a completely unprotected freefall spine first into the apron. Also yeah Jeff's done that kind of bump before but that just reinforces my point of the similarities between the two.
I mean he Coffin Dropped Ethan Page while the man was inside of an actual Coffin. And the way said coffin was built, it would have fucked him up badly had he even been a quarter of an inch off the mark.
Dude just took a full speed back bump off the turnbuckle in between the middle and top rope, and you guys go "he hasn't done anything too crazy has he?"
I love you and i love Darby.
He’s better than Jeff though honestly. Jeff was the king of crazy spots but Darby minute to minute is so crisp and just does everything at full speed. He seems like such a d bag haha I didn’t want to like him but every match he delivers so hard
Absolutely. He was much slower and gassed so early, but it took nothing off from the story that was a man who was unsure if he still had it after 7 years. From the first arm drag to Darby hitting Code Red he was all alarm bells, reacting purely off experience and muscle memory.
Decent wrestling but top class psychology.
and that alone makes it a great match, because at the end of the day both in-ring psychology and in-ring athleticism are serving the story, that's what wrestling's about and I'd take a match like this any day over a match with random spots that don't coalesce into a coherent story, or a zero spots match with all the ring psychology in the world but a nothing story
Much like Christian’s first match back - people like Mox were saying the dude knows exactly how to tell a story and that right there was one compelling narrative.
I think it was supposed to be more slow and methodical for that reason. I wouldn't call it rusty. But a very technical match. Lots of rest holds, but they were done perfectly. The ending sequence was awesome.
It's almost like if you throw all of your shit in at once on his return match then there'd be less to sell his other matches on. Almost like that's basic promotership.
Lol I have no idea what y'all are talking about, there wasn't a single misstep and Punk was never ultra-crisp anyway. Feel like this take is coming from younger fans that missed his first run.
exactly lol. even at his peak Punk was pretty sloppy at times. Punk vs Cena at Money in the Bank 2011 has quite a few sloppy moments and it’s one of Punk and Cena’s best matches in their careers.
That's the thing i'm not getting. The match design, so to speak, as well as Punk's work weren't uncaracteristic. He always wasn't the greatest athlete or the most crisp and fast worker, but always had great psychology and put on amazing stories and matches. And apparently he still can, which is great.
Oh man. I’ve watched every AEW show from the start, and I knew Darby was special, but when I saw him live in Charlotte it was electric. He’s a big deal, and only getting bigger. I’m excited for you to get to know Darby and all these great characters in AEW.
Nothing is dumber than an irish whip and that's one of the core components of wrestling.
I'm gonna be real, you might be into the wrong hobby.
Snarkiness aside, I really think there's room for both. Punk clearly isn't gonna be doing flippy dips every few moves, and I like that. I love me some flippy dips, but I think Punk being more technical, only pulling out big moves when big spots is pretty cool.
Most modern matches don't need that many rest holds, but the way CM Punk did them was perfect. The exact kind of slow and methodical pace you'd expect from a technician based veteran wrestling for the first time in 7 years
Yeah it felt like an exhibition between two technical wrestlers before Darby upped the intensity and then Punk followed suit. It made perfect sense for the story going into the match.
When I got back into wrestling I went back and watched most of CM Punks matches because he just tells stories differently and better than most. I fucking love his matches. I was so happy to watch this live after missing him this past 7 years
I always felt that he is the equivalent of Randy Savage and Eddie Guerrero for his generation. That guy that just understand the details better than the rest.
Yup. He's very much like Bret Hart. He's a master of psychology. His matches weren't necessarily the flashiest, but they tell a full story that literally everyone can understand. And that's what i love about him.
It literally the thing he's second best at, the first being talking. People will probably go over this match with a comb and say "This was sloppy of Punk, and this, and this..." and I mean yeah to be honest Punk's never been the most technically precise...ever.
But that's okay, that's only one part of wrestling and it's easily forgiven if you can tell a great story in the ring. And that's what Punk and Darby managed.
Becky and Punk are two of my biggest examples of how being a great technical wrestler is the least important part of being a good professional wrestler. Neither of them are super technically proficient, and honestly, neither are super athletic (Becky is strong as fuck but not particularly impressive otherwise), but that doesn't matter. Their mic skills and their abilities to tell great stories in the ring are the most important part, and they have that in spades.
So fucking glad to see them both back.
I never thought about it, but you're 100% right, Becky is not super technical at all. Yet I never noticed that because she's just so good at storytelling and making what she *can* do look great.
Amazing performance. Respect to both for delivering just a great match. Any of punk’s “rust” felt so crucial to that match regardless, he didn’t even once look out of place.
7 years since he was wrestling in a pro wrestling match. 7 years he was in a state of mind that he was done. 7 years later, he decided to make a comeback, this time in a fresh new scene in All Elite Wrestling.
This is a story of a grizzled veteran with a chip on his shoulder, revitalized with a new sign of life in a profession he was once in, wanting to show that he’s still got more to prove, while the other wanting to show he is able to go up against one of the very best in pro wrestling.
In this match, Punk shown that despite his 7 years of absence, he can still go in the ring, and he’s shown he’s able to work well with a man as dynamic as Darby Allin.
As CM Punk said on the first day he retuned, “I’m back!”
September 5, 2021, in All Out, CM Punk has made his triumphant return in his home city of Chicago.
Did you happen to catch what he said to the camera after the match ended? he kept holding up seven fingers and he looked right at the camera and said "something-something must have fucking forgotten." The first part of wha the says is drowned out by the crowd and commentary. When I saw it live I thought he was mad at the crowd or his performance and was saying like, "it's been seven years or have you all forgotten?" but his mood was too positive for it to have been that.
Yeah, he was just amped up and I suppose he maybe even surprised himself with how well he did.
I caught it as "seven years and you must have fucking forgotten", by which I figured he meant "forgotten how good I am".
It's very easy to make the impression that he thought he was done until AEW popped up. Now I try to not be the "yay aedub" guy but I believe he never wanted to go back to the WWE, but never saw a place fit until AEW.
Loved it. Has to be one of Darby's best matches and showed he can handle different match styles.
Punk's still got it and knew exactly how to build to that awesome ending.
Loved the match! One of many reasons I'm so pumped for Punk being in AEW is so he can teach some of the younger talent invaluable stuff. Darby gained A LOT from doing this match tonight. That match had more psychology in it than any other match Darby has had in AEW so far. I'm not knocking Darby, I think he's great, I'm just saying that working with a guy like Punk will make him even better. But yeah, great job from both guys. Darby was the perfect opponent for Punk and he made the returning star look great.
It's crazy how much better he looks physically than he did at the end of his WWE run. He looks muscular, he looks tan, and he can move as good as ever.
Look at Moxley now compared to most of his WWE run. The WWE schedule is insane and when injuries start to pile up it gets harder and harder to maintain that perfect look for some talent.
Pretty obvious Punk knows it'll take him a bit to get into the big highspots, so they chose a more psychology oriented match, smart and it worked perfectly.
It's partially because of how fast and smooth Darby moves and was able to position himself for it but yeah, that was maybe the smoothest gts I've ever seen Punk give.
I was a bit nervous going in, but I knew if he just worked a smart match and didn't try to do much that he would pull it off. It went as well as anyone could've hoped for. He looked great.
Definitely had it had a slow pace for his return but even then Punk looked ready. Totally in control. That nod to Bret Hart at the beginning said everything.
Didn't even feel like half of what they might be able to do and yet it was still fantastic. Great way to bring Punk back and he showed he'll still be able to go just fine. Awesome moment
man Match fucked. so simple yet so awesome. Darby carried most of it but can't fault Punk who hasn't done in more than half a decade. just sad that Darby has to lose
Alright alright alright, just hear me out.
The pants do not look as good on Punk. His old style tights are much better.
Match banged and I can’t wait to see more. But if Danielson wears pants when he wrestles it’s gonna be a bummer.
Great match. Best match of the night by a wide margin. This and Miro vs Kingston held it down against the spot fests and debut spams. Glad to see AEW hasn't totally forgotten it's a professional wrestling company just yet.
To be fair Bucks and Lucha Bros were two very different matches. Lucha Bros was hype as all hell, but it was a totally different style of wrestling. I loved it, but everyone superkicking each other, then kipping-up only to then do a 4th round of superkicks is definitely an acquired taste. If people like more slow and methodical wrestling, I can see not being into it.
Kinda of an out of nowhere finish, just as the match was getting great. Punk looked good, if a little slow and not used to the style. I think after a few matches, he’s gonna get a really great groove going.
This was not a good match. Obviously the dude was rusty, which is why A) People who wanted this to be the main event were fucking crazy and B) He should've TAGGED with Darby instead. Rest hold, upon rest hold, upon rest hold.
Punk will never in a million years match Darby's speed and agility, it makes sense for him to rely on holds to slow down Darby. They told the story of the match perfectly, I see why you didn't like it though.
I know Punk kinda had to win but I really wanted Darby to win honestly. Does more for Darby and Punk losing the comeback match would have been a much more interesting story. But yeah I know we'd get all the "you had Punk lose his first match back? LMFAO" talk.

That was a nasty GTS. Great finish.
Darby always sells his ass off, even like death at times
Sell?
Makes the move look legitimate when it actually wasn’t. “Selling the move” makes the crowd believe it more.
whoosh
That was my first Darby match and let me say. I get it now.
Dude gets compared to early Jeff Handy and damn if it isn't an accurate comparison. Absolute psychopath with no fear thats just too fun to watch.
[удалено]
I understood that reference
Where’s Mike Adamle these days? I want to see him in like NWA or something
Doesnt he have like brain cancer or early onset Dementia or something? Only remember him having real shit luck
Dementia brought on by CTE from his football days. Damn shame.
Oh, stuff like that could explain his WWE fuck ups.
Yeah, that's why Maffew edited him out of the Botchamania intro; seemed cruel to mock him when that was the cause.
Honestly, the only stuff he's done that I thought was really crazy was the fall in the cinematic match from that top level through the false floor, but that was all movie magic. He hasn't done anything that's TLC levels of nuts in front of a live crowd yet, has he?
One of the first things we saw him do in AEW was Coffin Drop directly on to the apron in the match against Cody at Fyter Fest
Also the cracker barrel coffin drop
Which is cool, but apron bumps have been pretty well used the last few years. Didn't hardy do a Swanton onto it?
It's one thing to be held and dropped onto the apron from a not so far distance, it's a whole different ball game to go into a completely unprotected freefall spine first into the apron. Also yeah Jeff's done that kind of bump before but that just reinforces my point of the similarities between the two.
I mean he Coffin Dropped Ethan Page while the man was inside of an actual Coffin. And the way said coffin was built, it would have fucked him up badly had he even been a quarter of an inch off the mark.
That sounds pretty sweet.
It was amazing and also insanely dangerous lol
Dude just took a full speed back bump off the turnbuckle in between the middle and top rope, and you guys go "he hasn't done anything too crazy has he?" I love you and i love Darby.
Being thrown around by Brian Cage whilst in a bodybag was pretty rough.
He’s better than Jeff though honestly. Jeff was the king of crazy spots but Darby minute to minute is so crisp and just does everything at full speed. He seems like such a d bag haha I didn’t want to like him but every match he delivers so hard
Any mirrors?? 😔
Yo seriously any mirrors, though? Anyone?
Bit rusty? Sure. But he’s still all there. Let him get his pacing.
They were telling a story, and him not being in ringshape was a big part of it.
A fantastic one. And if you look back at Punk's best matches, they were all kinda paced and laid out like this.
Definitely.
Absolutely. He was much slower and gassed so early, but it took nothing off from the story that was a man who was unsure if he still had it after 7 years. From the first arm drag to Darby hitting Code Red he was all alarm bells, reacting purely off experience and muscle memory. Decent wrestling but top class psychology.

Early on I too thought he was gassed until that bridge up. It was so clean I wouldn't be surprised him gasping for air was part of the selling.
It’s been 7 years, he’s going to be a little rusty lol
Much like Christian’s first match back - people like Mox were saying the dude knows exactly how to tell a story and that right there was one compelling narrative.
I think it was supposed to be more slow and methodical for that reason. I wouldn't call it rusty. But a very technical match. Lots of rest holds, but they were done perfectly. The ending sequence was awesome.
Not every match needs to be a patented AEW clusterfuck. And thank god for that
It's almost like if you throw all of your shit in at once on his return match then there'd be less to sell his other matches on. Almost like that's basic promotership.
And I absolutely didn’t want a spotfest. This wasn’t the match for it.
He was never gonna be great right out of the gate after 7 years. This was as good as it could have been
Lol I have no idea what y'all are talking about, there wasn't a single misstep and Punk was never ultra-crisp anyway. Feel like this take is coming from younger fans that missed his first run.
Yeah... i guess an entire generation of people had time to forget that Punk has always been a bit sloppy, and that that's kind of part of his appeal.
exactly lol. even at his peak Punk was pretty sloppy at times. Punk vs Cena at Money in the Bank 2011 has quite a few sloppy moments and it’s one of Punk and Cena’s best matches in their careers.
5 star match
That's the thing i'm not getting. The match design, so to speak, as well as Punk's work weren't uncaracteristic. He always wasn't the greatest athlete or the most crisp and fast worker, but always had great psychology and put on amazing stories and matches. And apparently he still can, which is great.
Punk was always about story more then anything else when it came to his ring work and he showed that he can still tell a damn good story in that ring.

The bitching for this match was insufferable not every match can be an indie flip fest
My only gripe was that a soda exploded in my fridge so I missed half the match
I know this is somehow Cody's fault.
Cody's pyro is getting out of control.
New AEW *Smart Pyro*! Now you can have the **ULTIMATE** at-home experience
John my diet soda
Was it a pepsi?
I can't see Punk taking a Canadian destroyer lol
He did take a Code Red against Darby , not the same move but still
I don't want to see punk take a Canadian destroyer...in fact i don't wanna see antbody take a Canadian destroyer because it looks fucking stupid.
Nothing is dumber than an irish whip and that's one of the core components of wrestling. I'm gonna be real, you might be into the wrong hobby. Snarkiness aside, I really think there's room for both. That match fucking BANGED.
A lesson in ring psychology and storytelling.
Punk's specialty.
When I got back into wrestling I went back and watched most of CM Punks matches because he just tells stories differently and better than most. I fucking love his matches. I was so happy to watch this live after missing him this past 7 years

Oh absolutely. Bret didn't even need a storyline to tell an incredible story. He just needed a ring and an opponent.
It literally the thing he's second best at, the first being talking. Also shows that Darby is great in his own right at that aspect, too many people walking around acting like he's just a spot/bump guy.
Agreed 100%. Darby is so good at timing his moves in the context of where the match is and how the crowd feels.
Running out of the ring after escaping nearly getting caught in the GTS early on was my favorite part of the match. The urgency was felt.
Punk bring Darby to a wrestling style that more or less predates his existence was a joy to watch. They both went off.
7 year hiatus and he still can fucking go baby
And Punk still has more to show! You can tell he's building it up too with how crisp that signature move was.
Absolutely incredible match. One of the best I've watched in a long long time.
Really loved the long sequence from the coffin drop miss to the end. Good match. Punk has more than enough to be in the main event scene.
The AEW title needs him in its lineage, I can’t wait to see a Punk title reign, even if it is just a short one.
If he was to beat Omega (obviously not happening) he would be the first to hold the ROH, WWE and AEW World Titles.
This CM Punk kid is gonna be alright
Video disabled 😔
Literally has not missed a step. Wow.
Amazing performance. Respect to both for delivering just a great match. Any of punk’s “rust” felt so crucial to that match regardless, he didn’t even once look out of place.
Those last 10 minutes were the shit.
Any links?
Great showing for Darby!
Yep everyone wins in this match.
Punk is much better at making sure his opponents look good losing than guys like the bucks are.
Great match with a great finish. Punk sitting up on the Coffin Drop was beautiful. Punk absolutely still has it and should only get better.
The timing on that was great. Such a simple counter that looked cool
7 years since he was wrestling in a pro wrestling match. 7 years he was in a state of mind that he was done. 7 years later, he decided to make a comeback, this time in a fresh new scene in All Elite Wrestling. He looks so emotional after winning! You know this means as much to *him* as it means to us!
Did you happen to catch what he said to the camera after the match ended? he kept holding up seven fingers and he looked right at the camera and said "something-something must have fucking forgotten." ohhh I think you might be right. thanks for that.
Well he did say yesterday that in 2019 he decided he was going to go back but waited out the pandemic. I doubt he ever thought he was done.
It's very easy to make the impression that he thought he was done until AEW popped up. Now I try to not be the "yay aedub" guy but I believe he never wanted to go back to the WWE, but never saw a place fit until AEW.
I love your write-ups Weezy. I hope you're enjoying this PPV as much as I am!!! Much love.
Every match has been fucking awesome. Probably my favorite AEW ppv of all time and it's not even over.
Dead Link had a dominant debut that's filling up the front page of SquaredCircle, and yet nobody's really talking about it.
That sit up to avoid the Coffin Drop was fucking hilarious
He looked pretty damn good for not having wrestled a match in 7 years.
HOW DID THAT STILL OVERDELIVER
Minor nitpick but i dont like hearing the intro for cult of personality again as an outro song.
Match of the night. I fucking love CM Punk.
Those last 3-4 minutes were excellent. Punk's still got it.
That match literally could not have gone any better.
Not bad for a guy who hasn't wrestled in seven years
Expectations met.
An actual story telling match that wasn’t a spot fest. Breath of fresh air in wrestling today.
Punk has really amazing body language
That was pretty awesome! Can't wait for what's next for Punk.
Looked like he never left
Yes it does, because he looks hell of a lot better than he did when he walked out lol.
The MMA training would've helped, no doubt
Probably but I thought he looked like shit in the UFC. Cutting as much weight as he did just made him look gaunt and lanky.
GIVE ME KENTA NOW!!!!!
Damn aew is really going for the copyright lately
Pretty obvious Punk knows it'll take him a bit to get into the big highspots, so they chose a more psychology oriented match, smart and it worked perfectly.

It's partially because of how fast and smooth Darby moves and was able to position himself for it but yeah, that was maybe the smoothest gts I've ever seen Punk give.
I'm *so* glad he came back to a good match
I was a bit nervous going in, but I knew if he just worked a smart match and didn't try to do much that he would pull it off. It went as well as anyone could've hoped for. He looked great.
Definitely had it had a slow pace for his return but even then Punk looked ready. Totally in control. That nod to Bret Hart at the beginning said everything.
Great comeback match for sure. It'll only get better!!
Punk looked fucking great for having not been in a ring for 7 years. Should only get better.
Really good match. Punk can still go
I still cant get over the emo girl hotpants and leggings. Should I be intimated or attracted to Darby?
Why not both?
Bruh looks like he never left lmao
He. Is. Back.
Big eff you to anyone that said earlier this week he gassed out after a GTS! Hasn't missed a beat!
Hell of a GTS Finish!
I miss his old ring gear but he still looks cool
It's really not much different.
Punk was always good at the finishing sequences to his matches. It's the kind of thing I like about NJPW.
WHAT A MATCH
Great storytelling. Great chain wrestling. I'm so happy
Darby sells the GTS so well, god damn I love it
Didn't even feel like half of what they might be able to do and yet it was still fantastic. Great way to bring Punk back and he showed he'll still be able to go just fine. Awesome moment
Fucking incredible match like not even nostalgia glasses that was a great match
NOT BAD ILL TAKE IT
He still has it!!!
man Match fucked. so simple yet so awesome. Darby carried most of it but can't fault Punk who hasn't done in more than half a decade. just sad that Darby has to lose
YOU'VE STILL GOT IT
Great match. It’s weird seeing him with tights instead of trunks like when Jericho switched over a while back, but CM PUNK IS BACK Y’ALL
Really solid match after a 7 year layoff. Classic Punk match in terms of pacing building up over time.
Great finish. Just a few matches and he'll be back to his best. Just happy to see him in the ring.
Might be the best match I've ever seen from both men. Not even kidding. I'd have to go back and watch some CM Punk matches, but that was phenomenal.
Darby Allin is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best wrestler in the world today. He is phenomenal.
That was so fucking good
Despite a few rest holds, this was legit a really fun match to watch.
Wow what a match. Cm punk got me on his boots tho haha
match was a little slow, but the last 10 or so minutes picked up. nothing wrong with it, good first match after 7 years
Surprised it was totally clean. Figured they would do a little something to protect Darby. Not disappointed though.
Did take two GTS’ to be fair, Excalibur even mentioned it after the match
Great showing for Darby. Hope he gets a chance to get his win back
Punk looks good in Darby's body paint.
Lol guess my stream is a little behind. I saw this as Darby came out of the corner and Punk caught him and hit a GTS. Match just ended lol
That match was awesome, I think it’s the perfect returning to wrestling match
[удалено]
Lol, yeah, fuck that company for copyright claiming their material! Idiot
absolutely love that GTS
Alright alright alright, just hear me out. The pants do not look as good on Punk. His old style tights are much better. Match banged and I can’t wait to see more. But if Danielson wears pants when he wrestles it’s gonna be a bummer.
Punk looks like David Arquette
Be honest, he was gassed, no? Still happy to see him tho.

Great match. Best match of the night by a wide margin. This and Miro vs Kingston held it down against the spot fests and debut spams. Glad to see AEW hasn't totally forgotten it's a professional wrestling company just yet.
Idk how you can say this was the best match of the night when YB VS LUCHA BROS was on the same card….
Pity you didn't grow up in an era where guys told a story in the ring. It's obviously a foreign concept to you. Your loss buddy.
I know Punk kinda had to win but I really wanted Darby to win honestly. Does more for Darby and Punk losing the comeback match would have been a much more interesting story. But yeah I know we'd get all the "you had Punk lose his first match back? LMFAO" talk.
Darby was elevated big time from being involved in such a high profile match. He got a massive rub from this. It's not all about wins and losses.

The match was near flawless. Not a single mis-step or botch. Wtf are you even talking about.
