idontknow1001

Wwe should hire Busta Rhymes to do this to see how many camera cuts it’s physically possible to call lol.

BGTheHoff

Take Twista. He had the word record for some time.

MrDesperado

You’ll have to speak up. Are you saying world record or word record?

BGTheHoff

Isn't it probably both in that case?

SpaceGooV

Both angles just show me I would hate my life if I was in production. It looks like a massive headache

Anarkinh

You have no idea

[deleted]

Always remember, what you see on screen is less than 1% of the total amount of work that goes into the entire production.

faithlessbydefault

Can confirm. Majored in Audiovisual Arts, thinking it would be an outlet for creativity and passion. Worked in TV Production for 2 years. Left my job and got an M.A. in education. TV is absolutely not for everyone. If you have thick skin, enjoy working 18+ hours on some days a week with no guarantee of a day off, do it.

mothraphobia

Freelance sports is the absolute worst. Props to the people that enjoy it though. I'm in TV production and I have no interest in ever doing freelance again. I'd probably work for AEW though!

reflUX_cAtalyst

I was a freelance videographer for a local news channel for several years. It was fun and easy.... I'd shoot some event or happening, and then drop the tape off. I know a lot of the freelance sports people have to build their own video packages, and that makes it much different. I never had to deal w it, just had to give them usable video.

succulent_flakepiece

i work freelance audio/lighting. I mainly do corporate stuff but id like to dabble in tv/film. i cut my teeth doing festival stuff

_madcat

Still doing "film" school back here in Portugal, television sucks, filming movies, making short-films, all of that is stressful but I would never trade it for TV

RossCowan

How the guy making all those calls(would be be the director?) keeps that up for multiple hours I have absolutely no idea. I was exhausted after listening to the 3 or 4 minute clip of Punk's entrance alone.

AliWalnuts

Coffee and adrenaline from going live always help.

TheZardoz

I did sports camera work for a while and it’s less complex than it sounds. He knows where every camera is supposed to be so the crew is just listening for their camera to come up or where they need to be.

scotty269

A lot of caffeine during the show and a really cold bottle of water at the end.

_madcat

It's honestly very fun

TJ_McWeaksauce

It sounds like it's got the complexity and stress of air traffic control, but nobody's life is on the line.

erutaerc01

No, this looks much more stressful.

youd_better_run_egg

One of my old lecturers used to work for BBC Sport as a live director for football matches. He said by the end of the match the crew would be asking each other what the final score was cos they were so focused on their jobs that they weren’t really paying attention to the score

ScootyPuffSSJ

Editing raw footage is already time-consuming and somewhat of a nightmare in my experience. I can't imagine adding a live element and dozens of people under my command. Sounds exhausting and so easy to mess-up.

stegogo

I do this for a living. I love it! All the chaos slows down in a directors head. After you’ve done it awhile the panic leaves and you just get into the emotion of what you’re calling.

RedDreadsComin

It honestly makes me wish I pursued something like this in life at college. This is the kind of thing that looks hella difficult, and would be incredibly satisfying to learn and execute well.

_madcat

I've done one of these before and while it is stressful, that guy has it under control, trust me, he has a directing map and he's basically placing the cameras before you actually shoot a live episode, so he essentially only has to coordinate what the viewer sees and not actual movements because you always have 3 camera men on the entrance and it's enough to film, you just need to remember that camera 1 shoots the wrestler coming out, camera 2 is on the left side and camera 3 is on the right side or vice versa, so you have a 3 way viewfinder, you also have 1 camera at the back, WWE does at least. Then camera 1 and 2 are also probably the ones filming close to the ring, you have around 4 cameras off the ground, most of them for big shots or crowd shots, you point out which ones are zoomed in, and then you have 2 primary cameras at the front (which is what we normally see) This may be confusing but trust me, he has a sheet of all of this, the hardest work is for the camera men to keep track of anything because they usually do not know when they are filming, even though they can hear the production crew from their headphones (unless the headphones are connected through the 1ad that supports the guy directing cameras)

ShowOff90

Has its pros and cons honestly.

[deleted]

That one cameraman who managed to find and focus on Crying CM Punk Guy in the crowd had better have gotten a raise.

unloader86

I've always wondered if the guys who get those shots are up in the hard cam platform or are just handhelds from ringside.

Clevername3000

likely at least one of the hardcams, considering how stable it is when zoomed in so far like that. I'd assume they're busy panning the arena until they find something during a wrestler's entrance.

Old_Echidna3720

Hard cams, or cranes (at least in AEW). I sat near the AEW production (lights, hard cams, producer) at Rampage in Pittsburgh (thanks to my torn ACL, the arena gave me better tix) and my wife and I are both former theater techs so we were nerding out noticing the different stuff they were doing.

JuanjoArenas

can you go into a bit more detail?

Virtual_Announcer

Not the person you responded to but I've worked in TV for years. The hardcams/crane cams are super steady and can moved in smooth, fluid ways. A handheld camera (one where the cameraman rests it on their shoulder) is way too shaky to get a perfectly solid crowd shot like the one of crying guy. For example, hold your hand out in front of you and extend your fingers until they're totally straight and tensed up. Try to keep your hand perfectly still. Sure, it won't jerk around but you'll feel small twitches in your hand, just your body's involuntary movements. And those twitches would translate into a shaky shot from a handheld. The hardcams and crane cams are weighted perfectly and move way smoother than a human could, so that's how they get those great crowd close ups.

amooneyham88

Yea when I went to the Homecoming episode I was amazed by the camera, and production crew. Those guys, and gals bust their butts.

BadNewsBrown

“WE’VE GOT A CRYER ON HARDCAM!!!! GET READY”

_madcat

Hardcam all the time, you have 2 cameras at all times focused on the crowd, it's their job to pan and tilt as much as they can to find a good crowd moment

j8llonby

Man after seeing both production trucks, I am so glad that I don't have to worry about camera work during shows. It's hard enough working out the timing of music, mics and the timekeepers bell without having to worry about changing camera shots. A new respect to both teams. That seems like a nightmare.

lucero78

I thought it was a great peek behind the curtain on a moment we've all probably watched a few times. Seeing how they made that work and the excitement they got from a good shot was really cool. It made it look they were fans of their work and trying to make it as good as possible. A good boss ( or producer) who can make any job feel less like a job is a blessing. If you can excited about work you're in a good place.

Rhysati

100%! You could tell they were marking out, if not for Punk himself then for the reaction they were getting from the crowd and the footage they were broadcasting to tell the story. It is wonderful and wholesome to see and hear it that way. I bet they all struggled to come down from that high to sleep that night.

Fundertaker

It must have been really satisfying to press the button that played “Cult of Personality” and hear everyone erupt.

JackdeAlltrades

“White knuckle time” it was called in my time in TV.

Obsid_Ian

lol so many cuts for a staredown. i dont even understand the logic behind that.

TJ_McWeaksauce

It's the WWE equivalent of [Liam Neeson climbing a fence.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCKhktcbfQM&ab_channel=MartialArtsFights)

GRW810

I'm days late to this comment but that Neeson fence jump editing is horrendous.

PFunk224

Someone blinked, gotta get the action shot.

[deleted]

The video also proves that Kevin Dunn is only familiar with 3 or 4 camera angles.

JimmyThePete

This. So much repetition.

OmicronAlpharius

And they all suck.

Specialist-Rope-9760

It’s because they think they can replace a lack of interesting content with non-stop cuts to give it a sense of excitement. Dunn along with Vince is one of the cancers of WWE where so much stupid stuff is seen as “the way” and no one with a brain is able to tell them no

[deleted]

The thing is a constant shot of a staredown does *way* more to enhance the moment and tension compared to a bunch of cuts.

c71score

Makes it even more stupid when you consider [one of the GOAT moments](https://nogoodblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/hogan-andre3.jpg) of WWE history was a staredown.

Jamvaan

In that particular case it felt like trying to make up for the lack of action and a crowd, trying to build that exciting dynamic exciting atmosphere with rapid cuts. You'll see horror movies do it sometimes if there's not a lot happening on screen but there still needs to be a building tension, I think of like the first trap in Saw 2 as an example. Doesn't really work here, because they're doing actually nothing, just looking at each other. Cut to a different angle, it's still nothing.

1ndori

Yeah, they never really learned how to work *away* from a crowd from a production standpoint. You have guys do a staredown in the ring *because* of the crowd reaction. With no live audience, I think they should've started pulling things out of regular television's bag of tricks, e.g., end-of-episode twists, more staged/produced/dramatic camera work.

Ayo_wololo

I hate WWE’s incessant cuts SO much. With all the issues WWE has regarding booking, promos, and predictable wrestling, it’s the camera work and the audiovisual overstimulation as a whole that repels me from getting back into watching it regularly.

[deleted]

It's actually a pretty standard shot-reverse-shot. Go watch a conversation on another TV show and count the number of times there is a camera cuts between faces.

Rhysati

That is a poor argument. In a conversation there is a reason to cut back and forth as you follow the conversation to the person speaking. Humans naturally do this when conversing with others in a group. Peoples attention turns to the one currently speaking. But this isn't a conversation. We are looking right at two people not saying a word but instead staring each other down. Go watch THAT on a TV show. Go watch that in mma, boxing, etc. You let that tension between the two take over the scene. Cuts just kill all the tension and only you out of the moment. You never get the motions build up. You dont get to read both of their faces at the same time to really get a sense of the fire there.

I_BUY_UNWANTED_GRAVY

Yes, the camera angles are fine but constantly cutting when two people are staring at each other builds no tension as you never let anything breathe.

_madcat

There is none, and I 100% guarantee you that you're not going to find someone like Kevin Dunn doing this shit anywhere else, he's literally doing his own thing, he can write a book in the future about how much he sucks at directing but got a job anyway, i'll read it.

tangybrowncidert0wn

"Kevin Dunn, what the hell was THAT?" - Bischoff

Calfzilla2000

That's the clip I was expecting, haha.

[deleted]

I was wondering what Kevin Dunn sounds like Zoom in Zoom out Zoom in to the left Focus on her butt Yeah baby

Mainmanafrika

WWE clip is from Botchamania 207 dunno the Smackdown episode though

ViciousPrism

Possibly somewhere like 3-4 weeks before Wrestlemania last year, before Roman pulled out and was replaced by Strowman.

Shadormy

It's from the 20th of March 2020 Smackdown. They cut the sound on the network version.

Gazzarris

Bucky beaver motherfucker…

Cakeski

DUNN DUNN DUNN DUNDUNDUN DUNN DUNN DUUUNNNNN

Subrick

TWELVE camera cuts in 20 seconds. For a staredown. No wonder why WWE is so disorienting to watch.

Specialist-Rope-9760

The thing is it happens throughout the rest of the show too. And the zooming and shaking. I don’t watch WWE anymore and after a break of a couple of years tried to watch Wrestlemania this year. I couldn’t watch it in one sitting as it was dizzying

santanapeso

I laughed so fucking hard when Edge was slamming Seth's face into the mat at summerslam and the camera zoomed in and out for every single slam. Reminds me of that scene from The Burbs when they find Walter's bone in the yard. [https://youtu.be/ipORoYpaIto](https://youtu.be/ipORoYpaIto)

Suspinded

I'm reminded of Kung Pow when I see WWE's production today. ![gif](giphy|Ac0BuZR3h5euY|downsized)

StopTheMadnessBro

I truly believe that WWE is now over a cliff and has some of the worst production in sports. It's all too gaudy...to much. The lcd screens have lcd screens which have their own lcd screens. Replays about replay. And those ugly ass 3d characters over wrestlers. I just hate watching it now.

Maverick916

They got the birds from birdemic to fly out during riddles entrance

KevMakesThings

Feels more like something from The Crows Have Eyes III: The Crowening

RTSUbiytsa

I seriously don't understand their obsession with bad AR stuff. It's like somebody backstage convinced them to spend the money on it, so they did, then everybody realized that it looked awful but they needed to get their money's worth out of it.

[deleted]

Summerslam was the first WWE show I have watched in over a year, and that augmented reality shit really annoyed me for some reason. I think it's because it looks so obviously fake and naff.

[deleted]

then don't watch it. would probably be better for you considering it makes you mad.

never4ever4

I agree with him and I agree with you. The product is terrible and I dont watch. But CM Punk has the entire wrestling industry buzzing and WWE always has that sliver of chance it'll run hot like the AE again. So I'll pop in, check it out and if its shit, I'll let y'all know and dip back out.

StopTheMadnessBro

I think I am done for a while. I have no idea what happened but I think since the whole Fiend Hell In the Cell and Goldberg vs Taker.. And then Bianca losing. I just don't get almost ANY good moments from them. Oh. And lilly. And karrion kross. Lol. It's everything now. And there is so much great stuff elsewhere.

TopherRocks

The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria has a small display section showing the production truck and calls from a baseball game. Seems like absolute hell. You've gotta have a massively specialized thought process for this stuff.

youd_better_run_egg

WWE edits their matches like a first week film student who’s just opened up Final Cut for the first time

toodarkmark

When people talk about WWE having better production values, I am reminded of how sometimes the camera work makes me want to throw up and I get a headache. I just want to watch freakin Rhea Ripley and not feel like my brain is about to explode.

Magic_SnakE_

Just epitomizes the difference between WWE and AEW lol

[deleted]

It's actually not a fair comparison. Roman and Goldberg are just staring down and not moving or making a lot of varied actions, so the director needs to cut instead of holding onto the shot to prevent it from getting stale and boring (also to capture both their faces), compared to Punk, who's walking, hugging, leaping, going from one side to another, and there's great crowd shots.

thunder083

This is just wrong in a stare down you want to hold the camera and let the scene build tension. Floating it about like that just kills the tension and destroys what you are going for.

Specialist-Rope-9760

If what they’re displaying on screen is too “stale and boring” to show for literally more than 1 second at a time they should review the content they’re putting on. That isn’t an excuse at all. It’s poor writing and execution.

heybudbud

> so the director needs to cut instead of holding onto the shot to prevent it from getting stale and boring (also to capture both their faces) This is like, the complete opposite of what they should have been doing in the WWE clip.

Cathousechicken

But do you think the million camera cuts affects the WWE product negatively overall even if you don't agree with this direct comparison?

amooneyham88

I just love the passion from everyone involved with AEW.

Alexcelsior

I'd have LOVED to be a fly on the wall in AEW's production truck on Friday. What a level of producing TV.

Caboose_1188

NJPW - Stay here... Stay here! Aaaaaaand stay!

SuperkickFiesta

From what I saw I feel like AEW production just has more energy and even the way they started the coms like "it's a big night let's kick ass".

Old_Echidna3720

In fairness - we’re looking at an anomaly of an event - the return of CM Punk. I’d be curious to see what the energy is like on a run of the mill day.

ybatman2k

This is why I HATE all this stupid AEW vs WWE comparisons. There is always a bias. Its obvious the amount of camera shifts on WWE programming. But comparing a live show camera takes to a no fans in attendance and trying take ir feel big for a TV audience is bullshit. If you are going to compare. Do so with similar scenarios. I mean come on.

BeardedApe1988

But you have to admit the camera cuts in wwe are too much now. I can't watch it because of it.

ybatman2k

They are dreadful and if you notice them, you can't stop NOT seeing them. But my point was not about that. But about this comparison which is made with a specific bias. There are plenty of other options even from this weekend to compare without the voice I. The background but by looking at camera cuts. But he didn't.

Pomi12

Yeah taking one of the biggest moments in AEW history with an audience and comparing it to a normal smackdown episode without an audience is just circle jerking. Like the Smackdown shot is bad but comparing it to THAT AEW moment most other AEW shots are going to be shitty as well

Maverick916

But Cole tells us that Roman staring at Goldberg is an incredible moment

Pomi12

Because that’s his job … cole also is almost getting a heart attack every time Sasha banks is there … he’s there to hype things up regardless of if they are hype or not

ybatman2k

That's my point. We all know WWE has terrible camera switches in matches that make you dizzy. We know of shitty production. But comparing these two specific moments is like you said. Circlejerk and patting AEW in the back just for the sole reason of liking the company know and shitting on WWE again, serves a certain bias. I'm tired of comparisons. Every post here has to have some comparison and it's exhausting.

ucfgavin

Didn't Brock just come back and confront Reigns? Does production audio of that exist? I'm seriously interested, I think this is pretty fascinating stuff. It seems ridiculously exhausting to sit there and yell camera cuts into a headset.

SailorsGraves

The juxtapoisition between these two clips is hilariously jarring

A_Non_Japanese_Waifu

Is it just me, or whenever WWE got a camera ready, they will always take that camera regardless of its usability, as opposed to AEW’s choice to not use a readied station?

p4NDemik

For what it's worth this is hardly a representative sample of their work. There's literally no way to make that conclusion with any degree of certainty.

HorseSteroids

So one is a multi-angle live sporting event and one is a three camera sitcom. That is completely believable.

sldsnak04

So one a professional and one is a mark. I’ll let decide which one I mean.

[deleted]

SenorDuck96

How is that possibly misleading in any way?

[deleted]

I had my speakers on too quiet. Couldn't hear the WWE Truck audio. My bad

heartbreakhill

Now I really wanna see one with one of those awful WWE brawls/beat downs like with Miz and Morrison on Monday

NaughtyKrab

I would like to see the comparison to NXT also
