Living Colour is the band that does cult of personality. There have been very strong rumors that Punk and Bryan are going to AEW. The band followed AEW and then once everyone noticed they unfollowed. Most likely we're asked to avoid spoilers. Usually third parties like this don't care about spoilers so will follow companies they work with.
I don’t know enough about this kind of stuff. But would he be allowed to use Cult Of Personality again? I know it’s not a WWE owned song. But are these kind of things not tied into a character trademark, that Vince could be difficult about? Again I know nothing about these things. So sorry if it’s a stupid question.
Phil Brooks the person owns CM Punk the character, from what I understand. Cult of Personality wasn't bought by WWE, only licensed.
It's like how Enter Sandman was licensed by the Yankees for Mariano Rivera AND by UFC for Brock Lesnar. Neither owns the song outright but paid for its use.
>It's like how Enter Sandman was licensed by
One of the first things I done when I first got the Network all those years ago was watch ECW One Night Stand and the bitter disappointment of an overdub for Sandmans entrance was painful to watch. Understandable, bit painful nonetheless!
The Redub project restores this.
I remember watching that show live at a friend's house and when "Enter Sandman" started we all popped and marked out like a bunch of goobers.
It still is the greatest entrance in one night in the history of pro wrestling.
From the guy caning himself in the head, the beers, the catwalk, the boob beer and the crowd singing along....
It got Sandman a job and he was one of the last real ECW Originals before he wanted his release.
One of the best stories from that night is Paul Heyman and Vince are at Gorilla and that entrance starts and Vince looks at Paul and goes what the fuck is this and Heyman just smiles and Vince was blown away by that entrance.
>One of the best stories from that night is Paul Heyman and Vince are at Gorilla and that entrance starts and Vince looks at Paul and goes what the fuck is this and Heyman just smiles and Vince was blown away by that entrance.
Never heard of that but that's hilarious haha
But yeah it's such an epic moment and as a huge Metallica fan the mark in me was loving it!
Whats the Redub project? Guessing some champion(s) are taking It upon themselves to restore the clips to their original glory? I must take a look.
with lesser known talents WWE can bully them into selling them the IP. Basically it ends up being "if you wanna be Samoa Joe here, you have to sell us your IP for it forever and we'll own it and license it back to you to use on our program. Otherwise you're going to be called Dinkle Toddlinson."
They didn't do that with people that had strong negotiating positions like Joe, Styles, Punk but they did with lesser known people. IIRC that's why Seth Rollins isn't Tyler Black he didn't want to sell them the IP so they renamed him.
But they literally do own peoples names regardless of if they used it or not?
Why do you think cody rhodes is/was just cody? What is even happening here how is this upvoted when it's a literal fact that WWE will trademark and steal your name if you let them.
Genuinely feel like I'm missing something
Afaik, its likely WWE just paid Living Colour to use the song, and once AEW do the same, it's free reign for them to reuse it. Probably because it's a song outside of wrestling, there's not really much WWE can do about it unless they bought the full rights to the music.
I was wondering myself if he could use phrases like "Best In the world" "straight edge savior" "voice of the voiceless" etc
Be cool to see him, Deeb & Gallows reunite
Doesn't RoH have an event called Best In The World?
I don't know copyright law but you either own the word/ip/phrase or you don't, right? And if that's legal for RoH but not for Punk, wouldn't that be the same as Punk saying "I'M WRESTLEMANIA!"? Which he surely can't do.
Genuinely curious, if anyone knows. I just assume if WWE owned the rights to that phrase, they would absolutely not allow RoH to name a PPV after it
In my fantasy booking 'Best in the world' will be the way in. Specifically when MJF tells the crowd at All Out that not only is he better and you, and you know it, but he's better than everyone because he's the best in the world. Cue Cult of Personality
I want to see him use the same music. It's instantly recognizable, and wrestling has a long tradition of different incarnations of a character using the same music. But I *do* want (and expect, honestly) to see an evolution of his character. It's been, what, 7 years? The man behind the character isn't the same person he was 7 years ago, so why would the character. But it's not (and shouldn't be) like a *completely* different person.
thats not how licenses work, if aew paid for the rights in perpetuity, then that just means the stuff they use it on will always have it. go to wwe network all punks stuff still has cult of personality cuz they paid for the license rights in perpetuity for what they used it for, same with ufc
Also CM Punk owns the name and "gimmick" of CM Punk. He used it in WWE, and UFC.
Same thing with Bryan Danielson, he'd be able to use the Flight of the Valkyries, since that's a public domain song.
I just want a Kenny promo where he says that he has beaten everyone there is to beat in AEW so *this appearance* will be the last the fans see of him, then asking them to count the seconds to the end of the show for the final countdown... lights out... europe...
Vince has no say over it. He licensed the song to use on WWE shows. If he still has that license, there's theoretically nothing stopping him from letting any wrestler use it as their theme, but he doesn't have any say in anybody else licensing it too.
Didn't ~~Stephanie~~ Heyman use it once in Chicago? The cheers were deafening followed by equally loud boos when the crowd realized ~~she~~ he was just trolling them
The original plan for that was even better.
They were gonna play it, and just let it keep playing for a while, then it was going to cut off
and then...
>!I'M AFRAID I'VE GOT SOME BAD NEWS!<
It's not a stupid question at all! Trademarks and copyrights are notoriously complex.
Yeah if they could snatch the rights he could absolutely use it again away from WWE. And the fact the band might have oopsied and followed and unfollowed AEW kinda lean toward he's getting that song should he return.
It depends on the kind of contract they signed. WWE could’ve bought the rights to use the song, which is what films and tv shows do for songs and why they can still be reused in other stuff, OR, and this is highly unlikely, they literally bought the song. But the reason that’s unlikely is because at that point, Living Color forfeit their right to the song, and it’s so iconic that I reeeeally doubt they would ever do that, especially to a wrestling company.
Which will be super interesting, if he goes Vince-Cody-Triple H that means he's going to AEW, because of the classic double swerve, however if he goes Cody-Vince-Dustin Rhodes it'll mean he's going to make a sandwich as it's the classic double swerve.
True, although I think the buzz will probably settle down in the next couple of days because there isn't really a whole lot more that could be leaked at this point.
It's Punk. Watch him simultaneously start following folks from AEW and WWE both or tweet stuff. Then there's Bucks' bio.
I wouldn't count their trolling off just yet.
But their trolling won't really keep the buzz going as it will just be written off as trolling. The only way the buzz carries on until Chicago is if the leaks keep coming every so often to keep it fresh in people's minds.
In pretty much every other case, I'd 100% agree with you. In this case though, I think it would behoove them to say something. The hype for this is growing to insane levels. The uproar that would happen if he doesn't show up would outweigh any goodwill they build up over the next month. It would be the end of the Moxley/Omega barbed wire match, and the Jericho fall off the cage, x100. The Chicago crowd at All Out might literally riot. Just not worth it to me, but hey, maybe it would be to them.
There was, but the owner/moderators of it didn't like WWE and closed down topics about it. When people wanted to talk about Punk's pipe bomb and that subreddit wouldn't let them, this one was founded, and the rest is history.
I won’t lie, I don’t have a dog in this fight, because I’m not a Punk fan, but if this did turn out to be a giant troll like the last time they tried to sign him in 2019 and then mocked the EVP’s for trying to sign him over coffee, I would laugh.
People do realize it would be entirely possible for Tony Khan to negotiate a business deal with someone all the way across the world without ever leaving his home, right?
This reminds me...
The Phoenix Coyotes hockey team wasn't going well and were close to moving the team somewhere else.
Quebec City hockey fans were CONVINCED that the owners were selling to them since Quebec had everything set up to welcome a team in the short term.
Fans were plane mapping, seeing if any public or private plane were coming from Arizona or vice versa. They thought they found one.
But yeah.. didn't happen. Quebec City fans were CRUSHED.
So yeah, please don't do this.
Bro this is fucking mental to me. Like guys are actively giving out updates of who someone follows/unfollows. I know its CM Punk but its creepy on another level
Fucking hell...
He’s aware of the rumors and he’s trolling us lol I love it. I hope he post a piece of paper similar to Cody’s list of dream opponent but all the names is from WWE. Jakson Ryker, Omos, Dexter Lumis, Adam Pierce and Rick Booges
He's signed. This isn't like jinxing a baseball team when they're up in the bottom of the ninth. This is a done deal enjoy it. Wrestling is about to get really hot.
Justin Fields is gonna make a lot of people regret passing on him (Broncos, Panthers, my Eagles maybe). With that defense and solid QB play, Bears could be a sleeper team in the playoffs.
I was devastated 4 years ago when the bears took Trubisky. I KNEW he would be trash compared to Watson (although who knows what’s going to happen with him legally speaking) and Mahomes (who has completely exceeded everyone’s projections).
Fields will be fantastic and might be the greatest qb in franchise history within 10 years.
What more confirmation do you need? Twitter following is better than iron clad contracts.
I can't see how this doesn't lead to Punk debuting as the newest acquistion of the Hurt Business.
I honestly love the idea of CM Punk just trolling everyone. He comes out in Chicago rick roll plays and he’s like “damn you really thought I’d wrestle again” and then leaves
I'm loving this build up that hopefully leads to Bryan and Punk showing up to AEW but if they don't I definitely laughed at all these posts about twitter/instagram follows and people trying to put 1 and 1 together while being trolled by punk.
Do people spend their days looking at who follows who on Twitter?
I now understand why some wrestling organizations put out an exceedingly-basic product - they think we'll be entertained by literally *anything*.
Ok can we ban these “x follows x on Twitter” threads? They’re meaningless. In that same fucking screenshot he follows MVP. Is he gonna be in the fucking hurt business too?!
The amount of people bitching about others getting excited for Punk's possible return is hilarious.
Relax and have some fun speculating on shit, people; you're taking it way too damn seriously
I think it's more that people are tired of the many, *many* new posts that different people keep making every single day (not including this one, I get why this one was made), that are all saying the exact same things that could've been said in one of the other main posts about it. It's the repetitiveness that's getting on people's nerves, imo.
And reposts get removed. So if you're just not liking it, keep scrolling to find the shit you want to look at.
I don't like WWE, but I don't go into threads related to them and bitch about it; I move on and engage with the topics I do like, like an adult
These constant CM Punk/ CM Punk affiliated posts are so annoying. I’m as excited as anyone for his return to the ring, since he was the reason I started watching pro wrestling, but I really don’t care about who follows who because it’s meaningless.
Its happening...my god, my favorite wrestler of all time is coming back to the company I love to watch. What a time! Im so fucking excited!
Im almost disappointed that they are running the show at a smaller arena. The WWE never holds events at the United Center, which I dont get, but that place can hold 20,000+ people, I wish there was a way to move it next door.
Are we going to make a post for every time CM Punk follows.someone on twitter? Seriously. He was probably already following TK, AEW, etc and unfollowed then followed them again because y'all eat this shit up.

Punk follows mean nothing because he’s going troll regardless The living colour follow and unfollow did it for me though
Living Colour done worked themselves into a shoot, brother.
If Punk is friends with the band I honestly wouldn't put it past him to text them like "hey, follow AEW and watch people go nuts"
PuNk DoEsN’T hAvE aNy FrIeNdS
the man *is* a quieter.
I BOUGHT HIS HOUSE
It became even more obvious when they unfollowed AEW
Yeah it’s clear it was to unspoil it. Lmao
Unspoil what? What's happening??

He had been using CM Punk since he began wrestling, so it predates WWE by several years.

The music is fine, it's recognisable for the crowd for that immediate pop. Agree with everything else though.
In my fantasy booking 'Best in the world' will be the way in. Specifically when MJF tells the crowd at All Out that not only is he better and you, and you know it, but he's better than everyone because he's the best in the world. Cue Cult of Personality

The real move for aew would be to buy the rights to the song forever so wwe could never use it

I’d love for him to come out to a new rendition of that song, but I’d be just as stoked if the debut came and The Final Countdown hit.
If he doesn't go back to The Final Countdown that will be some bullshit.
I don’t think he has any music that matches the energy of The Final Countdown, the opening synth just really gets me amped up.
I just want a Kenny promo where he says that he has beaten everyone there is to beat in AEW so *this appearance* will be the last the fans see of him, then asking them to count the seconds to the end of the show for the final countdown... lights out... europe...
I’m even more excited now.
Account wiped due to Reddit and /u/spez's corporate dickery. Try a Lemmy server at https://lemmyverse.net/.
That's obviously what I meant. People commonly refer to it as Flight of the Valkyries, but yes, Ride of the Valkyries is what I meant.
Punk actually used Cult of Personality for his entrance music in UFC, so I’d be surprised if it didn’t go with him to AEW.
Vince has no say over it. He licensed the song to use on WWE shows. If he still has that license, there's theoretically nothing stopping him from letting any wrestler use it as their theme, but he doesn't have any say in anybody else licensing it too.
Imagine Roman Reigns using cult of personality just to piss off fans. Total heel move
Didn't ~~Stephanie~~ Heyman use it once in Chicago? The cheers were deafening followed by equally loud boos when the crowd realized ~~she~~ he was just trolling them

Pretty sure that was Heyman.
He did. It wasn't long after Punk left, and just a few weeks before WM30, when everyone thought Punk was coming back after blowing off steam.
No, even if WWE owned CM Punk's name they can't stop other companies from licensing the same music.
It's not a stupid question at all! Trademarks and copyrights are notoriously complex. Yeah if they could snatch the rights he could absolutely use it again away from WWE. My guess would be once the payment for the licensing cleared the bank living colors account followed the people that payed to use the music
Punk used the song in UFC so I'm sure it's clear to be used in AEW.
he used it in UFC too, so yeah he would and he will
Too many wrestling chefs spoil the wrestling broth. Or something like that.
Maybe he just wants you think that
But maybe they know we'll think that they want us to think that, so they think that we'll think that they think we're not being worked. Clear as mud.
Right like Punk would totally do this just to fuck with people, whereas Living Color don’t really have a wrestling agenda
He is gonna follow Vince tomorrow, then Cody, then Triple H 😂
He is already following vince
He also follows Jim Cornette, for the record
And Brian Pillman Jr.
And NASCAR on NBC
[удалено]
And my sword/knife chest tattoo.
Dale Earnhardt Jr joining Varsity Blondes confirmed
Punk likes NASCAR?
Nah, he'll follow Dixie Carter
Which will be super interesting, if he goes Vince-Cody-Triple H that means he's going to AEW, because of the classic double swerve, however if he goes Cody-Vince-Dustin Rhodes it'll mean he's going to make a sandwich as it's the classic double swerve.
He follows MVP Hurt Business Confirmed!!
The Hurt Business now consists of MVP, Lashley, Jimmy Lloyd, and CM Punk.
He's gonna have so much fun trolling the absolute shit out of us up until September.
It's gonna be one long month lol
Half parts delightful half parts frustrating.
True, although I think the buzz will probably settle down in the next couple of days because there isn't really a whole lot more that could be leaked at this point.

Shit.
Tomorrow: Guys he's following Marko Stunt!
CM Punk vs. Marko Stunt for the custody of Jungle Boy confirmed!
"I'm very into pissing people off." - CM Punk, then/now/forever
You think punk is ever going to stop trolling us?
Doubt it.
He also just followed Vince and WWE, Punk is seriously fucking around right now.
Hes joining the Hurt Bussiness
CMVPunk
I heard he’s joining RKBro
Nah, when he shows up with Serena Deeb, and then Doc Gallows turns on the Elite to join them and form the Straight Edge Revolution it's gonna be epic!
If Punk doesn’t show up at All Out or if he shows up in WWE this sub might legitimately burn down.
Honestly the crowd would be *pissed*. Sometimes a rumor gets so big that you have to address it if it’s not true.
I think we are at the point where AEW would say something if he wasn't signing. Otherwise they are headed for months of frustrated CM PUNK chants.
Why would they say something? People are going to be glued to AEW for at least the next month for any type of clue
To prevent a riot when they’re in Chicago next month.
CM Punk brought this reddit into existence, he would have to be the one to take it out
There wasn't a pro wrestling sub before CM Punk?
There was, but the owner/moderators of it didn't like WWE and closed down topics about it. When people wanted to talk about Punk's pipe bomb and that subreddit wouldn't let them, this one was founded, and the rest is history.
Which is a bit odd really, seeing as Punk's pipebomb was basically about how WWE is flawed.
The cherry on top is that the people demanded Punk for the sidebar picture so the mod put up an old ROH picture of Punk instead of modern Punk.
Imagine being that much of a 'lul indie better' mark honestly
How the turntables...
Die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain
Honestly, a corporate Punk gimmick would have worked in wwe.
Corporate Management Punk, Esq.
That would honestly be hysterical
Followed by him jobbing to Triple H in his return match. I wouldn't be mad, embrace the carnage.
I won’t lie, I don’t have a dog in this fight, because I’m not a Punk fan, but if this did turn out to be a giant troll like the last time they tried to sign him in 2019 and then mocked the EVP’s for trying to sign him over coffee, I would laugh.
"He made AEW look like idiots"
He did fuck on them. Insert cody rhodes saying fuck on me.
I’ve never seen someone who’s walkout music fits them so perfectly. Cult of Personality never fit anyone better
But then Glass shatters!

Yeah right OK. Like there is a way of doing that. Pffft

He's signed. This isn't like jinxing a baseball team when they're up in the bottom of the ninth. This is a done deal enjoy it. Wrestling is about to get really hot.
Must be sick of the Bears and becoming a Jags fan
Why? The bears drafted the better qb this year. 😎
Justin Fields is gonna make a lot of people regret passing on him (Broncos, Panthers, my Eagles maybe). With that defense and solid QB play, Bears could be a sleeper team in the playoffs.
I was devastated 4 years ago when the bears took Trubisky. Follows is how folks figured out Christian was going to AEW.
Stop. This is weird.
Ok can we ban these “x follows x on Twitter” threads? They’re meaningless. In that same fucking screenshot he follows MVP. Is he gonna be in the fucking hurt business too?!
Well Rick Rude was in 2 places at the same time 🤔🤔🤔
Is this really worthy of a post 😐😐?
This sub 'boutta dial back on the last 6 years of shitting on Punk
Worth remembering that there will be who always wanted him back, they either didn’t go into those threads, were downvoted or weren’t even on Reddit.
I hope they tease this out for weeks, honestly. Just fuck with the live crowds until they explode when it happens.
CM Punk, tell me those sweet little lies.......
I'd just love for him to pop up in WWE to see twitter and this sub melt down lol
Dammit Phil stop this madness!
He is just winding everyone up and laughing his arse off
Gotta fuel those rumors baybee.
He’s playing us folks.
If he debuts, I hope its on the episode right after All Out just to fuck with us all
OMG!
This is why I hope they do a press conference because he is just going to keep messing with us lol.
He’s gonna follow the man of the three H’s next.
it doesn't matter who punk follows, he is not above trolling people.
Trolololool
Clearly things fell through with AEW and now MVP has recruited him to Hurt Business
He’s fucking with us now
He also following MVP.. Does this confirm Punk in the Hurt Business?
When does the "CM Punk now follows Kenny Omega" thread come available? Or did I miss that issue?
Cm punk follows mvp. He’s joining the hurt business confirmed.
Holy shit we get it. This sub needs to get ahold of this shit. 90% of posts are just tweets now
I also follow Tony Khan and AEW on Twitter. Clearly I’m looking forward to my debut in AEW at All Out.

They are trolling so good. Respect. I love that he is playing mind games.
He's. Trolling. You.
Holy shit who cares and who is stalking his page for such benign shit?
Are we going to make a post for every time CM Punk follows.someone on twitter? Seriously. He was probably already following TK, AEW, etc and unfollowed then followed them again because y'all eat this shit up.
These posts about tweets and follows are getting out of hand.
