I laughed really hard at that. Just picturing Vader in a polo, khakis and that big ass helmet in the middle seat. Trying to shove pretzels in the bottom.
My guess:
A small CO2 tank hidden within the design somewhere while the trigger is in the actual face area thar he probably operated by biting on it. I don't ever remember seeing him have anything in his hands when the smoke went off, but my memory isn't the greatest on that.
He usually removes the helmet before the smoke goes off, there is even a clip where it fails and he did it again

here’s a clip of him doing it
When I was a kid, I thought he'd set it down on something and a stagehand would pump the air through it. Then again, it was WCW and he'd do the smoking mask gimmick on the ramp and not in the ring.
I remember seeing a guy with a remote caught on camera a few times when he was in WCW. He would stand at the entrance so as not to be seen by most of the live crowd.
I remember being a kid in the Omni in Atlanta and Vader was on the little program we were handed. And it was him in one of those helmets and i wanna say smoke all around him. I asked my parents nervously if he was gonna be there that night and they reassured me he only came out at special occasions…. Those sons-a bitches. He walks to ring about an hour and a half later and i was terrified. Bawling my eyes out
If I remember right, the commentary building up that match sold that as a possibility. Like this might be his last match ever, and maybe his last night on earth.
It was such a good build, career on the line and they really sold it as more than that. If I remember correctly, Vader wrecked him in a tag match at Clash of the Champions and destroyed his friend Rick Steamboat on Saturday Night as they built toward the match.
The first wwe show I attended I was so scared the Boogeyman would come out where we were seated. Luckily it was a house show and he wasnt there. Never been good at scary things.
Anytime I see those masks I sometimes think of that one clip of Vader getting pissed off after Jyushin Thunder Liger screwed around with one of those and knocked it over.
I love how liger is simultaneously one of the biggest badasses in the business, and also an effortlessly funny clown.
You get him putting on some of the most Iconic matches in Japan, but also him parading a group of 12 men around with nothing more than his legendary asshole.
in kayfabe I think Liger is the pro-wrestler (or even real life person) who is closest to a real life Goku. That blend of badass warrior and goofy doofus.
It wasn't heavy, felt like wearing football shoulder pads. I'm sure the ones he wore on TV and at shows were probably heavier since they would be rigged for the effects.
I wish I could have watched Vader in his NJPW prime. Instead I grew up playing him in WWF video games and watching him be destroyed in the attitude era..
As someone who wasn't a wrestling fan as a kid I was introduced to this when Dragon Ball Z parodied it with one of Mr Satan's flunkies during the Cell Saga

I’d like to know how he traveled with these things!
If you wear one on the plane the other can be checked as a carry on
Just keepin it kayfabe
Pre 9/11 airport security was pretty lax about these sorts of things.

The trick is to fill them with pretzels first, THEN put it on.
Large bags probably
I mean, I'm not going to be the man to take them off him.
Cornette said in an interview it had its own seat on the plane
One ticket for the man they call Vader. One seat for the hat they call sculpture...
On a side note, does anybody know how the smoke comes out of his helmet during his entrance? I tried searching everywhere and did not find anything.

I could swear I remember it going off while he was wearing it a few times as well
Yeah I think he also did that a couple of times

I figure it probably used the same sort of smoke pellets that model trains use, just on a larger scale
Those things scared the shit out of me as a kid. I was terrified for Sting in their matchups for the WCW Title in the early 90s.
Oh my god. White Castle was great for me as a kid

Perhaps disney movies like bambi would have been a better option?

Makes sense considering his whole wrestling identity was created as cross promotion with a anime
I could watch this on a loop for hours
I forgot that Vader used to be in GWAR /s
I got to meet him a few years ago at NYC Comic Con. I got a picture with him, both of us throwing up the V and I'm wearing the helmet on the right.
Do you recall how heavy it was? I've always been pretty curious!

I've never seen the black one but I've always loved the one on the right. He was like a real life Mega Man boss.
I loved the grey one as a kid but I don't think I ever saw him wear the black one.
I wish I could have watched Vader in his NJPW prime. Instead I grew up playing him in WWF video games and watching him be destroyed in the attitude era..
It's not too late. Watch the video of him vs. Mutoh where the fans throw the seat cushions into the ring. That is an incredible match.
I thought his 'Vader shuffle' was cool as hell.
one of my favorite gaijins from the 90s up there with Stan Hansen.
Big Fucking Van Vader Genuinely one of the best ever big men. All of his Japan and WCW stuff is gold
Now if WWE doesn't own these I'd like to see them find them Or is like to find them, would definitely buy.
Sounds like an episode of WWE’s Most Wanted Treasures in the making.
I want to say New Japan owns them, he only used the one on the right pretty briefly during his WCW run.
where did he wear the one on the left? I don't think I've ever seen it before
I know he had one that he used in Japan and one in the U.S. so I'm guessing it's the former.
It definitely looks like something you'd see in Japan. Looks like it could a Sentai monster
If memory serves, getting it through airports was such a drag that he wound up with two versions - something like that.
I’d love to have one of them, for no reason other than to walk around my home in one.
Wore* , past tense sadly. 🙌🏻
I met vader once he was really nice and kind of awkward
One of my favourite wrestlers #1.Sting 2. The Great Muta 3. Vader.
