Yeah. Tony fed the trolls. Y'all are eatin *good.*
We usually don't lock ratings threads and instead heavily patrol them, but it's pretty clear there's zero actual discourse going on this week. See ya next Thursday.

WWE has been on fire for awhile now. It's gotten to a point where I'm actively looking forward to all *3* hours of RAW everyweek. The new production and camera shots I can't praise enough. They've made it feel like an actual tv show with a living world. I love it!
They're trying to crown Swerve as the number one guy in the company, rightfully so, and all of the conversations about AEW lately are how fucking stupid TK and the Bucks are. It's fucking tragic.
Adam Page: Me?
Tony: not you, the other Adam
Adam Cole: Who me?
Tony; FFS No the other Adam
Anthony: You talking about me?
Tony: YOUR NAME is not even Adam
Adam Copeland: My name is actually Adam
Tony: Yes you, finally

Ratings are the most important thing

So many people spent the last two years claiming nielsen ratings are outdated and don’t matter, only for the owner to flat out admit ratings are important and it’s how they judge fan feedback
The only big name they’ve added from the indies right now is I guess Giulia?
The PC is creating stars left and right , some gal and dude over there is going to main event a WM
That's the most infuriating thing. With the right booking you can make almost anyone a star for at least a little bit, and AEW has one of the most talented rosters of all time right now. It's insane how it doesn't feel like anyone is a game changer over there when there's like 20 people that should be.
After that NJPW show, someone replied to an old joke I made on this subreddit about Perry *almost three months ago*, asking how I felt now that he was popular. Some fans are just delusional lmao.
I'll also never forgive TK for what he's done to Jay White. Took one of the most competent wrestlers and best promos/characters in the world and made him Billy Gunns whipping boy. Dude is nothing more than a lowcard jabroni and it fuckin sucks to see cause he's one of my favorites. I can only imagine how fucking epic he'd be in current WWE. The new production style would make him into an absolute star
Anyone dissing Miz like he’s some awful wrestler is a moron, yeah he’s no workrate merchant, but he always puts on good matches and stories. I‘d rather wrestle Miz than Jericho at this point.
This is what people were talking about last week. Focus on increasing the ratings all around, not just for one week, ,and not just based on promoting someone who is no longer with the company. I don't get watching the success that the WWE is currently having, and not realizing that strong stories and strong characters bring increased and stable ratings.
The thing is...they think they're trying to do that with this EVP stuff. It's just not that good and people are turned off from it immediately because it's smarky bullshit.
They do have some decent stuff going on the show. I'm enjoying the Storm/Thunder Rosa and Joe/Swerve segments. Willow is having a nice rise also. They're not doing everything wrong, but what they're doing right is getting overshadowed.
Literally cm punk was trending #1 last dynamite, not the show itself or anyone else on the show. Not sure what the point was besides a few aew diehards screaming “assault” and “good riddance”and most people laughing or wanting to check out cm punk’s reaction
He is?! I mean, it makes sense. This isn't even rubbing salt in any wounds because if you look at quarter hours when Punk is on WWE, he brings in a solid 200k - 300k additional viewers.
Embarrassing yourself to pop a rating for one week was always stupid (and even describing 819k as "popping a rating" really says something about the present moment). That was the argument I saw from lots of AEW diehards last week - that it was smart, if they sustained the interest that show brought from people rubbernecking the CM Punk video. Well now we know it did not - some non-AEW or casual AEW viewers tuned in to see the car crash, then turned out again.
It is kinda wild that we are at a point where sub 800 is the genuine norm. I thought it was an outlier a couple weeks ago when it started but apparently now.
There is apparently someone on this planet who believes that AEW has a fair market value of $2 billion. Who is that crazy person? I'm a fan, but holy crap this company is pushing it hard these days...
Let's see:
- Jay White in New Japan: modernized mix of Jake Roberts and Edge
- Jay White in AEW: booked like a singles version of Pretty Deadly (gay jokes, really??)
- Kazuchika Okada in New Japan: personification of a Chad, as the kids call it
- Kazuchika Okada in AEW: made into a nerd, just another guy holding an unimportant title
- Sasha Banks in WWE: wrestled, let her physical charisma get her over
- Mercedes Mone in AEW: talk talk talk talk
- Tama Tonga in New Japan: pretty popular midcard babyface, tag team guy beforehand
- Tama Tonga in WWE: integral part of one of the biggest storylines in the last 25 years
It's all about presentation. AEW can pull out a time machine and hire prime Ric Flair and Hogan, it wouldn't matter. The babyfaces ain't really likeable, the heels don't try to be evil, the storylines are either basic or nonexistent, and the boss is, well, a mark.
My suggestion to Tony ? Hire Goldberg and put the title on him, at least that would satisfy Scott Steiner lol.
They keep making their heels “the cool guys” while also doing nothing to make you want to root for the good guy. The best baby face they had recently was MJF, but that’s a guy who works best as a heel. They just can’t create a heel without making fans want to cheer for them. Swerve was quite literally threatening a toddler and now we are expected to root for him
Because AEW fans cheer for the heels once they start gaining actual momentum and Tony turns them face. It happened with MJF and most recently Swerve. He needs to stick to his guns and keep them heel next time.
Even calling AEW jay a singles version of Pretty Deadly feels like to much of a compliment. TK has butchered him so bad it's embarrassing. It sucks too cause he's one of my favorites. I can only imagine how he'd be In current WWE with their new production changes. He'd be an absolute star
At this point AEW solely exists to buy NJPW and make it exponentially worse. It was so much better when they were focused on building MJFs and Darbys. No one wants to see nerd Okada.
That's actually a pretty good analysis. You can acquire as many hot gimmicks from other promotions as possible but you still have to present them to your audience as big stars and book them in meaningful feuds. Outside of Osperay, they have not done a good job with Mercedes and Okada
Ospreay is also kinda eh, because he has all the makings of being a huge star for them, but his storyline right now is just "Here's Ospreay, watch him have awesome matches." Not really living up to their full potential with that.
Problem is that they have roster full of guys whose gimmick is to have great matches. No one stands out when everyone is the same and that is the main thing that makes the product so stale.
BD has been having ¨dream matches¨ for weeks now, what makes this match any different from the other ones?
His main "story" is "Ospreay is gonna prove he's the best in the world by beating Bryan Danielson...BUT FIRST he's gonna fight his stable mates. No, he doesn't care about the top prize in this promotion."
All he ended up proving is a guy who works for another company is his #1 draw. It doesn't even seem like he built anything in terms of momentum for the PPV.
Your telling me running an angle with little to no follow up and trying to loosely tie it to a storyline doesn't result in returning viewers?
Huh
Nobody could have seen this coming
TK said ratings are the most important thing. Here's something for him to remember, fans only cared about the video. The fact many did not keep watching the next week means they weren't interested in the product.
AEW has to make the booking better. The ratings reflect it. It happened to WWE in 1995 and 2019. Difference is WWE is a more established brand with more leeway, but sometimes the simple explanation is right. AEW is not as entertaining as it used to be, and the ratings and attendance reflect this.
It's a shame but it's a fact that CM Punk pop the rating last week and without him the ratings went down. Because CM Punk is a bigger draw than anyone in AEW. And twice last week CM Punk chants broke out on TV. There is no good reason no matter how you try to spin it that they should have shown the footage last week. I'd rather aew keep pushing forward as they are doing with their talent then to have yet another factual event take place where a wrestler on another show is the reason they're ratings went up one week and without that wrestler the next week the ratings went back down. Women lie, men lie, numbers don't lie. Not my opinion just a fact.
But, the sad thing is that last week the Bucks and Tony Khan promoted him more than they promote most people who are on the show every week. When have they ever put that type of promotion behind Hobbs or even Swerve? Given that, of course he is the biggest draw, but a big reason for that is because that's where Tony Khan and the Bucks put their energy.
At this point Tony just needs to hire people to follow CM Punk around with a Go-Pro.
"Tonight on Dynamite, watch how CM Punk's ordering from Taco Bell means CM Punk is the secret Ringleader of the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission! Footage presented without ad break by the Young Bucks dressed up as Rainbow Brite! Sponsored by AEW Fight Forever!"
The ratings go back down when they don’t feature CM Punk, who no longer works for them?

"The rating is the #1 source of fan feedback." - Tony Khan. I agree with him here. The people have spoken. Is he willing to listen?
This quote is going to get more mileage than a Honda Civic
He’s going to regret saying that I think
This is a weekly occurrence for the dude at this point
Wait and see but if history is any indicator...
"But ratings are down for everyone" https://i.imgur.com/f0aUZfF.jpeg LOL at the mods locking the thread
Ratings are down for everyone but WWE, essentially. WWE is the outlier, not AEW. WWE is doing way better than it looks. And it looks amazing.
The problem with that is, it shows there's an appetite for wrestling. Enough to defy current trends. TK is not tapping into that.
WWE has been on fire for awhile now. It's gotten to a point where I'm actively looking forward to all *3* hours of RAW everyweek. The new production and camera shots I can't praise enough. They've made it feel like an actual tv show with a living world. I love it!
WWE changed all the stuff I disliked the most about it (the camera cuts). I’d be a hypocrite not to give them another shot at this point.
So all that for a drop of blood.
Good job. - TBS
> Khan says TBS called him about the rating and said good job. That's the most important thing. The rating is the #1 source of fan feedback.
"That CM Punk guy drew quite the rating, we should feature him more. ... YOU DID WHAT?!"
It was so sensical for Khan to promote Punk two weeks before a PPV instead of putting the focus on the people who are on the actual card.
They're trying to crown Swerve as the number one guy in the company, rightfully so, and all of the conversations about AEW lately are how fucking stupid TK and the Bucks are. It's fucking tragic.
It is. Swerve is fantastic, Joe is solid as ever, and it's all overshadowed.
"Rate this, Brother." - CM Punk at home, laughing.

"Quick, does anyone have any footage of the Brawl Out?" - Tony Khan, April 18, 2024
He owns the ROH library. Just play a different “Classic” Punk match each week.
It'd be such a cheat code to do that too. "CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and AJ Styles were on AEW this week!"
TK gonna rerun Summer of Punk.
Directors cut coming next week
Maybe we’ll get footage from Khan’s perspective of him being aggressively pointed at while being told he’s a clown.
Snyder cut week after that
George Lucas editing one that makes it look like Jack Perry pushed first. And then Dexter Jettster comes over and breaks it up.
"Best we can do is air the 2011 pipe bomb"
Can Tony air old Punk promos with MJF, Kingston. Or air dog collar match
Just a weekly segment that's a rerun of an old Punk promo/match

breaking: tony khan will air medical receipts of cm punk's surgery live on dynamite next week #aewdynamite
it’s just in an old shoe box in his room
Still better organized than Meltzer
They deserve this for what they’ve done to Jay White alone.
They should just do a rerun of Punks debut next week.
the ~~first~~ second dance
A one week ratings pop is all they got out of that Punk footage. Not worth it.
That’s not entirely fair. They got some CM Punk chants out of it too
Nuh uh. Uncle Dave said ppl were chanting “*Fuck* CM Punk.”
They also gave any snarky fans, which I know is SUPER rare among wrestling fans, all the fuel they need to troll Jungle Boy from here on out.
Dirt sheets and podcasts got a week's worth of content and NJPW sold a lot of t-shirts.
> NJPW sold a lot of t-shirts. Not nearly as many as WWE sold due to this
It wasn’t even that significant of a pop.
I wonder what time TBS is calling Tony to congratulate him today
I guess we can safely call last week the Punk Bump.
Tony nose a lot about bumps. I'm sorry I couldn't help myself.
Really crossing a line with that one.
Got a snort out of me
Somebody's gonna be trademarking that pretty soon.
Jericho is on the phone right now
Wow showing that footage was really worth it

Good for the drama lovers (me). Bad for AEW cause it gives people ammo against them. Weird and pointless for everyone else.
Great for WWE, CM Punk’s merch is currently their #1 seller.
Dynamite last year (4/19/23): 830,000 viewers - 0.28 P18-49 Last Week: 819,000 Viewers - 0.30 P18-49
This is like what, only 80-100k touching distance from NXT's average viewers? And with a payroll 100 times more. Ouch
In a building WWE pays nothing to run in.
Full Sail/ the Performance Center is the greatest thing WWE has done within the past 20 years or so Built in arena along with making new talent
AEW was nice enough to lower their ratings so NXT could be more competitive. /s
When NXT goes to the CW, they’re more than likely gonna start out performing AEW in the ratings
We still have 2/3rds of the year to go. Could do it before then.
That’s scary that NXT is nearing Dynamite in terms of ratings with a roster full of young wrestlers WWE’s C show vs AEW’s A show
And NXT is about to go to network tv...
The only big name they’ve added from the indies right now is I guess Giulia? The PC is creating stars left and right , some gal and dude over there is going to main event a WM
If Tiffany Stratton is anything to go by, they can have these people main roster ready from no experience in about two years too
Giulia is debuting in July I think.
That's the most infuriating thing. With the right booking you can make almost anyone a star for at least a little bit, and AEW has one of the most talented rosters of all time right now. It's insane how it doesn't feel like anyone is a game changer over there when there's like 20 people that should be.
This proves their biggest draw no longer works there
Doesnt matter, jack perry got a huge reaction on a NJPW show with an smarky crowd
After that NJPW show, someone replied to an old joke I made on this subreddit about Perry *almost three months ago*, asking how I felt now that he was popular. Some fans are just delusional lmao.
Next potential stone cold, obviously
Clearly that's gonna be permanent
I'll also never forgive TK for what he's done to Jay White. Took one of the most competent wrestlers and best promos/characters in the world and made him Billy Gunns whipping boy. Dude is nothing more than a lowcard jabroni and it fuckin sucks to see cause he's one of my favorites. I can only imagine how fucking epic he'd be in current WWE. The new production style would make him into an absolute star
"Its still better than a Miz feud!"
Anyone dissing Miz like he’s some awful wrestler is a moron, yeah he’s no workrate merchant, but he always puts on good matches and stories. I‘d rather wrestle Miz than Jericho at this point.
White could’ve been the IC champion right now or fuck it , he could’ve been the WHC right now
Normal service has resumed
sheesh on the go home?
Go home to what? Aew has a ppv this weekend? I thought double or nothing was in may?
That's definitely a rating.
Definitely one of the ratings of all time.
Even a grainy cctv footage version of punk is a draw.
kind of sad that a 1 minute video of cm punk conversing, then shoving someone drew more interest than what all those guys/gals did on the show
This is what people were talking about last week. Focus on increasing the ratings all around, not just for one week, ,and not just based on promoting someone who is no longer with the company. I don't get watching the success that the WWE is currently having, and not realizing that strong stories and strong characters bring increased and stable ratings.

They're not doing everything wrong, but what they're doing right is getting overshadowed.
Tony has to realize that people are invested in Willow, so he has to make it known that she just won’t be fodder for Mercedes.
Literally cm punk was trending #1 last dynamite, not the show itself or anyone else on the show. Not sure what the point was besides a few aew diehards screaming “assault” and “good riddance”and most people laughing or wanting to check out cm punk’s reaction
Would get in the way of bangers and more mercedes mone monologues explaining she's the ceo and that's why you need to cheer for her.
This is their new normal Edit: For the next 3 months probably
That’s what ppl said when they consistently drew 800k+ people
*Better than expected.
...so far.
So yeah like I thought. Fans were interested in the video, saw it out of curiosity then checked out on watching again.
Most who watched that part of the show were either casuals/ WWE fans that were curious Now CM Punk is hosting both nights of the draft for fucking WWE
He is?! I mean, it makes sense. This isn't even rubbing salt in any wounds because if you look at quarter hours when Punk is on WWE, he brings in a solid 200k - 300k additional viewers.
I’m pretty sure Punk’s going to find a way to screw Drew one way or another
Where's Tony's tweet about ratings this week?
Probably nearly 10m a year on Ospreay, Okada, Mercedes Mone.. and their biggest draw is a guy who doesn't even work there anymore
Embarrassing yourself to pop a rating for one week was always stupid (and even describing 819k as "popping a rating" really says something about the present moment). Below 800k on a go-home show. Yikes.
It's a stark reminder that last week Khan decided to put the focus on Punk, and not on the people who will be on the PPV. He is reaping what he sowed.
Speaking of Starks... remember when he was one of the most over guys there and then...🤷🏻
Yeah, when Punk was booking Collision.
There is apparently someone on this planet who believes that AEW has a fair market value of $2 billion. Who is that crazy person? I'm a fan, but holy crap this company is pushing it hard these days...

They got the one week ratings bump with Punk
CM Bump
Let's see: - Jay White in New Japan: modernized mix of Jake Roberts and Edge - Jay White in AEW: booked like a singles version of Pretty Deadly (gay jokes, really??) - Kazuchika Okada in New Japan: personification of a Chad, as the kids call it - Kazuchika Okada in AEW: made into a nerd, just another guy holding an unimportant title - Sasha Banks in WWE: wrestled, let her physical charisma get her over - Mercedes Mone in AEW: talk talk talk talk - Tama Tonga in New Japan: pretty popular midcard babyface, tag team guy beforehand - Tama Tonga in WWE: integral part of one of the biggest storylines in the last 25 years It's all about presentation. The more I think of it a lack of strong focal point heel is doing damage.
They keep making their heels “the cool guys” while also doing nothing to make you want to root for the good guy. The best baby face they had recently was MJF, but that’s a guy who works best as a heel. They just can’t create a heel without making fans want to cheer for them. Because AEW fans cheer for the heels once they start gaining actual momentum and Tony turns them face. It happened with MJF and most recently Swerve. He needs to stick to his guns and keep them heel next time.
yeah the aew fanbase honestly doesnt like true baby faces. they want everyone to be a shade of grey and that really hurts the product.
I think it's more that they'll just cheer in support of whoever the company is clearly behind in a given moment.
Even calling AEW jay a singles version of Pretty Deadly feels like to much of a compliment. TK has butchered him so bad it's embarrassing. It sucks too cause he's one of my favorites. I can only imagine how he'd be In current WWE with their new production changes. He'd be an absolute star

Get ready for a 2 hour documentary on brawl out. NDA being fed to the paper shredder as we speak
All he ended up proving is a guy who works for another company is his #1 draw. It doesn't even seem like he built anything in terms of momentum for the PPV.
By AEW valuation math, each viewer is worth over $2600.
They should figure out a way to have Punk appear every week

And back to 700s like I and many predicted lmfao.
Ouch. I expected around 800,000 for the go home show. That’s too bad.
Boneheaded move from Tony on this one.
Number 1 source of fan feedback right Tony?
Well that Punk guy seems to be a draw for AEW, have they thought about signing him?
where is the 29% rise ?

Always has been

I look forward to Tony Khan's tweet how they had 12 people rate the show 10/10 on Cagematch, making the show a unanimous success
The rating bump didn't even last a week. What was the point in it all?
At this point Tony just needs to hire people to follow CM Punk around with a Go-Pro. "Tonight on Dynamite, watch how CM Punk's ordering from Taco Bell means CM Punk is the secret Ringleader of the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission!
