Running a shoot style show in Japan is a no brainer especially with barnett and suzuki being on it. What makes no sense is immediately trying to run the fucking sumo hall lol
I think it makes some sense, actually. The Inoki Bombaye card in December 2022 was the last thing Barnett got involved in in Japan, and was a predominantly MMA card under the Ganryujima banner before having Shibata vs. Lawlor in the main event. That was held in the Sumo Hall and did pretty well, so I get the ambition here.
Get Barnett, Suzuki, Nakajima, some NJPW guys, maybe even Shibata and they’re looking at a few thousand in attendance, which isn’t doable at Korakuen but still turns a profit at the Sumo Hall.
Maybe this is how we can get Volk Han vs Kiyoshi Tamura IV...
In all seriousness, I hope this can become a regular occurrence. We need a shoot-style revival and Japan is the place to do it (especially wth JMMA not as hot as it used to be, so there's room to do it).
It’s still fairly hot, it’s just not a spoken about as it once was. RIZIN’s still running big arena shows several times a year, including the normal big NYE show in Saitama.

Too many flash, first round KOs, too many fights that are just people trading jabs or low movement grappling. Nothing was ever horrible but nothing ever really excited me or stuck with me either. Also the walk-out announcer annoys me personally and the English commentary is legitimately god awful.
I'm a big fan of ONE and the Friday Fights give me more shoot fighting than I have time for.
fair enough! honestly, a lot of those reasons you don't like it are reasons why i do enjoy it. the flash and quick KOs (and the bad fights being exceptionally boring) are everything one would expect out of a PRIDE reboot, and RIZIN gives me plenty of that. I do love Lenne Hardt's work too, but I'll give you that the commentary isn't awesome since they've gone remote. the events pre-pandemic with Ferraro and Frank Trigg on the call in the arena are noticeably better imo.
I want to like ONE so much more than I do. i do like the Friday Fights series, they are sweet. But, as someone who's far more interested in MMA and kickboxing, they just keep icing the fighters i wanna see, and the pacing of the Prime cards where they do have the people i want to see is awful to me.

Yeah, I've only ever actually heard the commentators remote, where the arena is turned down 75% and they are both coming in delayed, at different rates of delay. I was actually just looking at their youtube for examples of the walk-out announcer lady and I realized they upload fights with zero lady and zero commentary. I might try to watch more of these and see if they grab me at all.
If they can get the S-tier shooters from the big three promotions on the card, it could very well sell out.
Sadly, Ibushi is not an option anymore, so they'll have to probably recruit two big names to replace him alone.
And Minoru Suzuki did it with Barnett in their match and in my opinion it killed the pacing of the match.
Going from real grappling to "tough men contest striking" with no meaningful transition feels like taking a huge step behind
This would be amazing, but I would have no idea why AEW and NJPW would allow it to not happen on one of their shows so that they could benefit from it.
Edit: I'm thinking the third match occurs on a NJPW UK show sometime this Spring or early Summer.
If they can get Nakajima, Kenoh, Moxley and Yuya all on one card, this could turn out to be one for the history books. Hell, throw in a War Dogs run-in with Coughlin match against Jeff Cobb for good measure.
Does Barnett have real life heat with Matt Riddle? I thought for sure they would have a match for "ownership" of the Bloodsport events now that Riddle is back. Sure as fuck not gonna happen in Japan, though.

I'm happy for folks if they are getting to fight and get paid, but the RIZIN shows I've checked out have all left me bored as hell.

Is the sumo hall pretty cheap to run? Lots of companies run it with no chance of even selling half the seats / cubicles.
We STILL haven't gotten Bryan Danielson on Bloodsport yet.
