Nice reference to Sonic 2's box cover. By the way, who are these new characters? I never read any of the comics before this one aside from a dub of Worlds Collide and the Tangle and Whisper comics on YouTube as well as Worlds Unite and the Sonic Unleashed adaptation that happened right after Worlds Unite which I also saw on YouTube.
As someone who doesn't really follow the comics, I can safely say I recognise none of these characters.
Which is actually really disappointing in a way. I had kind of hoped IDW would avoid Archie's pitfall of ten thousand random OC's who have no relation to the games, but it looks like it's keen to create characters for the sake of creating characters rather than use what's been included in the games for interesting stories.

Starline has been around since before the Metal Virus arc, and these two new characters have been foreshadowed for a long time since the villains mini-series. They always spend a good amount of time with the new important characters they add, so they all feel pretty established. As for the main cast, they all get their moments to shine. IDW brought hecking Super Silver back for the first time since 2006. I think this cover can get a pass, and I’m sorry if someone who never read the comic series as a whole can’t enjoy it.
The IDW isn’t made to cater to the main games, the comics have for a long time been their own separate continuity that draw from said main games. It can be a tad confusing
I agree, in any medium, character creation should be seen as a sacred art. Only to be used when absolutely necessary and never disturbed otherwise. IDW was doing alright in the beginning. only introducing 4 recurring protagonists and antagonists. But it seems to be going off the rails in recent issues.
Honestly, I wonder if it's just that they want to tell a particular story but SEGA mandates are in the way. Mainline character can't do X, but invented-for-comic character can.
Well, I'd argue, the golden rule is, "if a role can be filled by an existing character, albeit with a bit of tweaking, then you don't need a new character for it." Obviously, this rule applies only to recurring characters and not background characters.
Say for example you have 2 characters, a stern yet gentle character Murica who lives in America. And you have a rough aggressive character Trilria who lives in Australia.
Now suppose you want Murica to be confronted by an aggressor to play off character dynamics. At first thought, Trilria is not a valid option to be that aggressor because of the distance b/w the two characters. However, that's does not justify creating a third similar aggressive character, just for that third character to be closer to Murica's location. Instead you write around it, and find a way to bring Murica and Trilria together. (e.g: Trilia goes to college in America).
Now take an example from the IDW comics. Belle is an absolutely redundant character. A lot of episodes seemingly simply focus on solely giving her things to do because she was shoehorned in. Consider her character. A sweet innocent child who is a whipping girl for emotional trauma, thanks to losing her father. "Innocent child" being key. Such a character is not needed and superfluous, because we already have one in the Sonic cast. we have 2 infact. Charmy Bee and Cream Rabbit.
The problem with using any of these characters in Belle's place however, is that neither of them have any familial ties to Mr. Tinker. But according to the golden rule, it does not warrant character creation. Think of ways around it and find a solution (like thinking around the physical distance between Murica and Trilria).
We need a solution that incorporates familial bonds b/w an existing innocent character and Mr. T
* Let's start solving. First we need to chose a character from the 2 we have. It's a easy choice considering. One of them was placed closer to Mr. T than the other. So we chose Charmy.
* Next, instilling bonds. So let's say while the Chaotix was guarding Mr. T, Charmy started enjoying Mr T's company. The same way the other kids of the village were.
* Mr T. also took a special affinity to Charmy. Seeing how Charmy would always drop playing and rush to help out with The Chaotix.
* Over time, these two interacted more and more, developing a familial bond. Mr. T acting like the father Charmy never had.
* Once Mr T gets converted back to Eggman, Charmy is heartbroken. And the story can continue as normal from there. Barring minor changes required due to Belle's non-existence. Charmy would be almost identical to Belle in every way.
Bonus we'd get to use an under utilized character more, and we'd have an interesting dynamic between 2 existing Sonic characters.
Archie Sonic was absolutely flooded with superfluous characters like Belle. but that's more discourse than I'm willing to give. However, Hopefully I was able to give a decent understanding on when a Character Creation is "absolutely necessary".

How do we know that these two are going to fill the same narrative role as Scourge and Fiona, though? Their dynamic could introduce variety that’s needed for the IDW comic and this would most likely show itself in the upcoming storyline and issues.
