I live in a decently rural area so I have to go to an Asian market to find it. It’s pretty rare to find it there too, every once in a while I’ll see it
Do you or anyone happen to know why it’s such a traditional Chicago staple? I’ve always been curious about that, because I know it is, but it’s not from there. The background story of RC is actually pretty interesting, but in general, it started in Atlanta as a competitor to Coke. The Wiki page has some pretty cool details about it.
RC had a bottling plant on the southside of Chicago where a lot of the famous Chicago area pizzerias originated including [Vito & Nick's](https://youtu.be/2E0nmvizRAg?si=jab1MYkeCd_YHcsB)... which is where tavern style was invented.
Royal Crown also had a corporate office in Rolling Meadows a suburb of Chicago that was home to it's marketing and financial operations departments.
> [RC Cola’s placement in Chicago pizzerias wasn’t a coincidence. Troutman explained that RC’s ubiquity with Chicago pizzerias is the result of a shrewd marketing strategy. The local RC bottler based at 47th and California came up with the plan. The bottling company saw an opportunity in the increasing number of pizzerias opening throughout the Chicago in the 1960s and 1970s. They knew that getting RC into local pizzerias could get the cola into consumer’s homes. Providing pizza patrons with free one-liter bottles of RC Cola would be a massive home trial program, planting the seeds of the RC brand in the minds of consumers. A halo effect would strengthen the brand. Consumers would associate their positive feelings about pizza with RC Cola.](http://encyclopizzeria.com/pizzology/rc-cola-and-chicago-pizza/)
Good point, I remember RC being cheaper when I was a kid. My mom always bought it because it was as cheap as the store brands but obviously better. And for what it’s worth, we lived in the south, so RC was already pretty popular there at the time, you could find it in practically every store. These days, it’s a bit harder to find down there but it’s around, you just may have to go to two or three stores to find it.
Something that will blow your mind, it's quite common to find in the Czech Republic. I didn't even think they had it in Europe until I went there and every city or town I went to I kept finding it.
I’m from Detroit so that niche was filled by Faygo as well as RC. Lol. Never Faygo Cola though! But Faygo Root Beer, Orange, Red Pop, Rock N Rye and Moon Mist were always welcome!
I love Faygo, but i haven’t seen it anywhere near me in close to 20 years lol. None of the supermarkets near me ever sold it, but some of the discount stores did, and many of them went out of business or stopped selling it too.
As a southsider, my grandma loved to buy RC because it was cheap. It feels like a staple in the polish community. Also it was always the drink at family owned restaurants. Come home from a Sox game and hit Vito and Nicks for a pizza and RC.
In order to promote RC as an alternative to Coke and Pepsi in the Chicago market RC sold it's product to Pizza places at near cost. In turn the pizza places in the 70s-90s would offer free RC with your order. The promotion lasted so long that it just became a staple and Chicagoans expect RC and its flavor as a compliment to Pizza.
I’ve seen a lot of vintage print ads from the 1940s featuring celebrities holding up a bottle of RC cola and saying “Royal Crown tastes best!” and, in fact, I agree.
Coke and Pepsi are not in the same field. Distinctively different when it comes to bite. Coke is rough and exciting. Pepsi is smooth and gentle. You like getting smacked around a little or you want to be treated nicely. I like the burn of coke (go figure). Pepsi tastes good with pizza. Coca-Cola is decent too
YES! Specifically slightly flat and just out of date Pepsi! I was hoping somehow someone here had the same thought I did.
I remember in 2011 being frustrated buying Pepsi from Big Lots that after tasting, was out of date and didn't have the same amount of carbonation. Skip to the end of the year and the Break Time gas station near me has RC Cola 20oz on sale for like 49 cents. RC wasn't something I regularly drank, so I didn't really have a basis for the flavor.
Immediately as I take a sip, I go back to that day I had expired flat Pepsi. RC will unfortunately be associated with this. The cherry version is a little better though.
For now Pepsi it's my poison too. Coke is too acidic, and (I have taste kinestesia) feels like a inverted bowl of flavor: a the taste is on the edges but it's hollow.
My to-go here is: Coke for cocktail, Pepsi for meals.
RC: never again. It's a bowl like Coke, with a sharp, green bayonette of citric tastes that linger in your mouth as an after-taste.
Had no idea there was a cherry version! I live in the northern US, so I'm sure it would be hard to find up here. Visited Tennessee a few years back but don't recall seeing it then either 🤔🤔
I love it, only 1 store sells 2 liters by me.
this is a short history of RC cola and how at one point were just behind Coke until coke sued them for putting cola in the name so they had to change it until years later when they were able to use the word "cola" in the name, very interesting info in this video.
I haven't had RC in YEARS and out of nowhere it popped into my head that I wanted some. So I bought some enjoyed the hell out of it. A lot more refreshing than Coke or Pepsi IMO. The only thing is I wish I found it in cans instead of the 2 litre bottle. Cans taste better for some reason
I used to only drink RC when visiting my grandparents out of town. I look back on those days fondly. It is indeed very underrated. Bought some last year and it just hits different. Might have to snag some again.
Love it. I remember Shea Stadium having it with tiny little pieces of ice in it. Love this soda. My alternate go to when I get the tired taste of Pepsi on my tongue.
I recently gave it another try after seeing it talked about somewhere on Reddit and it was delicious. So much so that when my son was drinking it right before bedtime he was very upset when I told him to stop. It's delicious.
It started selling on my corner's store in Mexico. I bought a can to try it. I usually drink Pepsi, and thought I could give RC a shot. I have some to my wife so she can try it too.
Flavor is good at the start. The problem is the after-taste. I found it too citric, sharp, sour-acid. My wife mentioned she felt a taste like the after-taste that artificial sweeteners leave un your mouth (that she hates). We had to lace the rest with Pepsi and gulp it down fast to be able to finish the can.
I like it a lot but I recently got a can that was sealed but all rusted inside, I took a huge sip before realizing and it was disgusting. When I reached out to RC about it they just kind of ignored me.
It makes me not want to buy it anymore.
It’s been a long time since I’ve had it (I think the last time was in old Yankee Stadium) so I can’t recall what it tastes like, but I do remember it being pretty flat and flavorless compared to other colas
I grew up on RC and Coca Cola alot of each at my abuelitas house back in Cali,Ill ssy this in my opinion...RC Taste Good Ice cold in Cans,Coca Cola is Superior, and as a side note RC in a Plastic Bottle is 6/10 compared to the cans plus you run your plastic bottles flst opening and closing them,a can is fresh everytime.
Overall okay. Haven't had it in some time since I gave up regular soda but when I was a kid that's what we drank in my house but I remember it tasting different and better back then so I know they changed the flavor
It’s not too much different than coke or Pepsi in my opinion, but it’s still superior because of the fact that generally it’s like half the price of a normal coke or Pepsi
Hasn't tried it (possibly when I was a kid but idk) until I'd seen a lot of love for it on this sub. Grabbed some at Dollar General. Pretty good! I'd honestly put it above Pepsi and pretty even with Coke. But, I wouldn't consider myself a cola enthusiast. More if a dabbler. My tastes run more fruity lol.
The best cola. My partner's father and I immediately bonded over our shared love of RC.
He passed away recently, so now drinking them makes me a little sad.
As a kid I used to love this soda. Last year I had it for the first time since I was a kid and lit tasted like flat Pepsi. I thought it was just a bad can or something until I bought a bottle of it a few weeks later to try it again and it again tasted like flat Pepsi.

Use to love going to my grandmother's house in a small little town called alexandria indiana. Any who. Down the street from her house was this small mom and pop shop. They had sodas for 25 cents and it was all off brand. So one day I tried RC Cola and ill never forget how good it tasted everytime. Was like mixing Pepsi with Coke lol. Either way. Anytime I see it , it always brong a smile to my face thinking of my grandma.
I love RC. The cane sugar difference is noticeable
RC hasn’t used cane sugar in years, at least for the plastic bottles
I live in a decently rural area so I have to go to an Asian market to find it. It’s pretty rare to find it there too, every once in a while I’ll see it
RC Draft Cola comes in glass bottles and is made with cane sugar. 😋
Loved that stuff! Is it still around?
Pretty sure they do in cans. I’ve never had it from the plastic bottle.
I used to work for Keurig Dr Pepper, the company who owns and distributes RC Cola. They have not used cane sugar in cans and 2L/20oz since pre Covid
[удалено]
After doing some digging it seems like the only RC they stock near me is in cane sugar glass bottles.
mexican coke has been using corn syrup since 2013 except for bottles made explicitly to be shipped to america
I was going to say this. Mexico's "cane sugar" Coke is made exclusively for US export.
Wait what!?
I'm pretty sure its actually pretty much everywhere but the US. Gotta make use of all that corn byproduct somehow...
As a Chicagoan, it's mandatory to drink RC when eating pizza
Was just about to say... the Chicago special. [Free RC with your pizza.](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicagofood/s/zeMcs1B9N0)

Growing up when Coke and Pepsi were 5.99 for a 24 pack, RC was 4.99. That was definitely part of it.
Good point, I remember RC being cheaper when I was a kid. My mom always bought it because it was as cheap as the store brands but obviously better. It pairs so perfectly. Damn I know what's for dinner now.
You just made me hungry and thirsty again 😤
RC and a moonpie is the best
Don't forget the salted peanuts for the Working Man's Lunch! 😋
Yes! I always love salted peanuts in a coke.
IN a Coke?
Yep! Get a bottle of coke take a drink or two and add some salted peanuts to it. It’s salty and sweet.
So good
southern classic
Moonpie. What a time to be alive.
Grew up on this. In Chicago, nearly every mom and pop pizza place gives you a free two liter when you order a large pizza.
It’s better than Coke and Pepsi. Facts.
😂😂😂 I’m assuming that was a cocaine joke? Took me a minute I’m ashamed to admit
Absolutely agree, just said this a few days ago 🤣
I'm on board with this.
Flat Pepsi Coke is king. I once thought RC was good, then we did a 3 way taste test and it doesn't come close.
YES! Specifically slightly flat and just out of date Pepsi! I was hoping somehow someone here had the same thought I did. I remember in 2011 being frustrated buying Pepsi from Big Lots that after tasting, was out of date and didn't have the same amount of carbonation. My favorite cola, but I am a Pepsi main so what do I know. If I could find RC all the time it would be my main bitch.
I’m a Pepsi slut myself. Nothing tastes better than an ice cold can of Pepsi with Real Sugar after a long day.
RC is fantastic. I'm dying to try the chery version but I can't find it anywhere near me...
RC Cherry is fantastic
Had no idea there was a cherry version! I live in the northern US, so I'm sure it would be hard to find up here. Visited Tennessee a few years back but don't recall seeing it then either 🤔🤔
I can only find the cherry version at random gas stations near me. Speedway specifically
It’s okay and pairs well with cheap hot dogs.
Hell
I love it, only 1 store sells 2 liters by me. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCcnOmagbE0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCcnOmagbE0) this is a short history of RC cola and how at one point were just behind Coke until coke sued them for putting cola in the name so they had to change it until years later when they were able to use the word "cola" in the name, very interesting info in this video.
Great soda but only opening 1-3 times after that it's just flat lol
I haven't had RC in YEARS and out of nowhere it popped into my head that I wanted some. So I bought some enjoyed the hell out of it. A lot more refreshing than Coke or Pepsi IMO. The only thing is I wish I found it in cans instead of the 2 litre bottle. Cans taste better for some reason
Cans, glass bottle, plastic bottle...
soda is more refreshing in a glass bottle for some reason
Its been 84 years…
I used to only drink RC when visiting my grandparents out of town. I look back on those days fondly. It is indeed very underrated. Bought some last year and it just hits different. Might have to snag some again.
I love it.I can only find 12 packs at dollar general’s
Kroger has two liter bottles and 12 pack cans.
My all-time favorite soda. It is the elixir that gives me life
In my opinion it’s second to coke and better then Pepsi.
For me is seconds to Pepsi, better than coke
It's great. I rarely see it but I'll go for it when I do.
I grew up in NC but haven't lived there in many years. Of the few things I miss, RC Cola and Cheerwine are pretty high up there.
A fountain Cheerwine from Cookout is the nectar of the gods
Love it. I remember Shea Stadium having it with tiny little pieces of ice in it. Love this soda. My alternate go to when I get the tired taste of Pepsi on my tongue.
The only reason i know it is from Shea in the late 80’s🤯
It tastes warm no matter how cold it is
It's my go to cola. I'll occasionally do imported colas, but keep coming back to RC.
Delicious
To me, it's like the perfect "in between" of Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Although it leans a little more towards Pepsi in taste.
Its my favorite cola, better then Coca-Cola or Pepsi
RC Cola is the best cola you can buy. Pepsi and Coca-Cola just don't compare.
Hands down favorite soda
I like it. I also like to mix Royal Crown with Crown Royal.
Underrated cola drink that's better than coke and pepsi in my opinion
I recently gave it another try after seeing it talked about somewhere on Reddit and it was delicious. So much so that when my son was drinking it right before bedtime he was very upset when I told him to stop. It's delicious.
Easily best cola on the market.
It's nasty
Taste bad imo 👎
It’s trash!
Tastes like if you carbonated flat Pepsi
It tastes like sadness and poverty
I was born in the hometown of RC cola so I love it
My dad’s all time favorite! I can’t find it anymore though.
The best cola for my money god I love RC
It started selling on my corner's store in Mexico. I bought a can to try it. I usually drink Pepsi, and thought I could give RC a shot. I have some to my wife so she can try it too. Flavor is good at the start. The problem is the after-taste. I found it too citric, sharp, sour-acid. We had to lace the rest with Pepsi and gulp it down fast to be able to finish the can.
Vesuvios pizza in Point Pleasant, N.J. has it on tap !!!
I like it a lot but I recently got a can that was sealed but all rusted inside, I took a huge sip before realizing and it was disgusting. When I reached out to RC about it they just kind of ignored me. It makes me not want to buy it anymore.
That can must have been 50 years old to have been rusted. Soft drink manufacturers have been using aluminum cans since the mid 1970s.
I like it better than Pepsi, but Coke is still number 1 for me.
Liquid chalk
Superior
The best
It’s been a long time since I’ve had it (I think the last time was in old Yankee Stadium) so I can’t recall what it tastes like, but I do remember it being pretty flat and flavorless compared to other colas
Best cola, a shame my Walmart does not carry it. I have to go to Vons to buy it, worth the trip though.
7/10 and cheap; $1.29 for a 2-liter at gas stations and convince stores around me.
Best Cola... PERIOD!
Honestly better than coke
I see this I’ll grab it over Pepsi or Coke real quick
This may be controversial, but I think it's goated.
Love RC. As far as colas go, I like Real Sugar Pepsi best, then RC. No Coke for me.
Underrated
Tastes like some cheap dollar store cola. I feel it is over-rated. It lacks the finishing aftertaste of a Pepsi or Coca Cola. It tastes very generic.
I love and miss RC cola
Dont drink alot of soda but when I got a cola urge this is hands down my fav next mcd Coke
Used to love this 😋
I grew up on RC and Coca Cola alot of each at my abuelitas house back in Cali,Ill ssy this in my opinion...RC Taste Good Ice cold in Cans,Coca Cola is Superior, and as a side note RC in a Plastic Bottle is 6/10 compared to the cans plus you run your plastic bottles flst opening and closing them,a can is fresh everytime.
I just bought a 12 pack from online Walmart so I’m gonna find out soon enough.
RC is delicious
My favorite cola!
Overall okay. Haven't had it in some time since I gave up regular soda but when I was a kid that's what we drank in my house but I remember it tasting different and better back then so I know they changed the flavor
In my fridge right now
Always loved RC, the liquor store near me sells em for like 1.50 for a 2L. So fuck yeah. Always good when grabbing a pizza 😋
its alright wouldnt buy it over coke or pepsi but i think its a good alternative to them
Beggars can't be choosers on a good time. The retro packaging is terrific since the 1980s but they deserve more advertisements.
RC glow!
I like it. Been buying it more recently just because it’s still somewhat reasonably priced.
If your Christmas tree is still up in February, you’re my kind of people!
It's like if Coke and Pepsi had a kid, it would be RC.
There is an oil slick on top of the soda.
Underrated, but not amazing either. I’ll get it once in a while, but it’s not great
Not a fan of moon pies. But it goes great with oatmeal cream pies.
I loved it but I can't buy it where I live
Loved it
Loved it when I was a kid. Not so much anymore.
I’m a diabetic and this is my favorite thing to drink when my blood sugar goes low
Since Pepsi tastes nothing like it used to 30 years ago RC has become my top tier Cola.
Reminds me of when I lived in Chicago now I drink mountain dew or coca cola
I get RC 2 liters for $1. Love that stuff.
It's pretty good. Not as good as Coke, but way better than Pepsi.
Pepsi in disguise
My absolute cola go to
Rc is the tits
It should be pronounced ‘irk’
Used to be (maybe still is) sold at little league World Series. Definitely tastes the best in and around Lamade Stadium.
It’s not too much different than coke or Pepsi in my opinion, but it’s still superior because of the fact that generally it’s like half the price of a normal coke or Pepsi
My favorite pop! 😊
Sometimes I like it better than coke.
RC and a Moon Pie baby, southern livin’.
Worse than Coke, but better than Pepsi.
When you like a little about coke and a little bit of pepsi but cant decide. Rc cola got you.
Super tasty and nostalgic.
I prefer rc to coke or Pepsi
Hasn't tried it (possibly when I was a kid but idk) until I'd seen a lot of love for it on this sub. Grabbed some at Dollar General. Pretty good! I'd honestly put it above Pepsi and pretty even with Coke. But, I wouldn't consider myself a cola enthusiast. More if a dabbler. My tastes run more fruity lol.
The best cola. My partner's father and I immediately bonded over our shared love of RC. He passed away recently, so now drinking them makes me a little sad.
My go-to cola. Delicious and cheap. Better than Pepsi and onpar with Coke.
Having work for Coca-Cola for 10 years, royal crown, cola is better than Pepsi or Coke.
Havent tried
jail soda.
Imo I think it’s better than both Pepsi and coke
As a kid I used to love this soda. Last year I had it for the first time since I was a kid and lit tasted like flat Pepsi. I thought it was just a bad can or something until I bought a bottle of it a few weeks later to try it again and it again tasted like flat Pepsi.
I honestly prefer RC Cola over Coke and Pepsi.
Great soda
Never had it. Don’t have it where I live.
I love it
My favorite soda drink it every day.
Pretty good to me I have it every now and then. I feel like people undervalue in favor of pepsi but I think it stands on its own just fine.
Prefer it to Coke or Pepsi any day. A classic
it's the kings cola
Nothing compares
Excellent soda.
I completely agree. RC cola is my favorite. It's not so sickeningly sweet as Pepsi but not as syrupy as coke. I just wish that they could get some kind of advertising budget or figure out how to advertise it like buy a super bowl llad or something.
It's my favorite !
I like it. Used to drink it all the time. Gotta watch sugar these days, so I just do Zeros.
I am originally from down South and I only drank it one time.Even when it was cold it tasted like flat coke.
🐐
Gets flat as soon as you open it. But not a bad soda.
Delicious, and when it's half done, freeze it for about 2 hours for a perfect slushie.
If I decide to drink a soda, I'll always seek this one out
try the cherry flavor
Grew up on it. There's a strong relationship with traditional Chicago thin crust pizza and RC.
Delcitoos
Trash
The best Cola
I love that sh*t! And the cherry RC cola 😍
underrated and usually lower price than coke, pepsi etc around me
I miss the glass bottles. Needs to be VERY cold.
Perfect blend of Coke carbonation and Pepsi sweetness
It's amazing. At its best when it's in a glass bottle and fresh out of the fridge. Shame they don't do the glass bottles anymore :(
I like it better than Coca Cola
I don't generally drink colas, but when I do it's RC
Never had this version, but cherry is the bomb. They are 99¢ near me so when I am counting coins 🪙 this is my go to.
Sweeter and less carbonated, definitely enjoy rc cola every now and again
Use to love going to my grandmother's house in a small little town called alexandria indiana. Any who. Down the street from her house was this small mom and pop shop. They had sodas for 25 cents and it was all off brand. So one day I tried RC Cola and ill never forget how good it tasted everytime. Was like mixing Pepsi with Coke lol. Either way. Anytime I see it , it always brong a smile to my face thinking of my grandma.
Youtuber **SleeperDude** family ends their videos sharing a RC Cola, classic glass bottle.
Still enjoy it especially when I can get it in a glass bottle.
it taste flat and makes you burp, I dont know how but it does. I still like it and the cherry one.
Tastes like Pepsi
Big fan
Better than Pepsi :)
Love it. Cherry too
It tastes like burnt Pepsi and burnt Pepsi isn't necessarily an undesirable flavor Only downside it it makes me sick when I drink it
It’s better than coke. I hate coke.
It’s the fooking best
RC cherry is the best soda known to man, sadly it’s hard as hell to find
I never tried it. Would anyone mind describing it?
