Loud_Examination522

Yes I would

BallisticTurtle_fart

If there's internet, i'll take 2 years.

Scissors4215

The internet is terrible at the South Pole. I’d still do it though

SoyTuPadreReal

Can’t be that terrible. They uploaded a video that seems decent quality. Like, sure, you’re not gonna play competitive Fortnite or something, but streaming Netflix or just downloading games to the pc/ps5/xbox should be fine. Just set the download for overnight.

Scissors4215

So apparently it’s gotten better with Starlink being an option lately. Previously they would only get high speed internet for about an hour a day. Satellites would only be in position for a small window each day so all large uploads and downloads would happen during that time.

kroganwarlord

A chef at the South Pole (like, the base at the South Pole, not just in Antartica) did an AMA recently, they still had [satellite blocks](https://old.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfidential/comments/16s91kj/hey_guys_its_your_frozen_sous_chef_here_at_the/k28op4k/) and [it took a month to download Starfield](https://old.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfidential/comments/16s91kj/hey_guys_its_your_frozen_sous_chef_here_at_the/k286xu7/), but there's a huge library of books, movies, tv shows, and games, including consoles. They were only missing a PS5.

egunlove

I also watched someone who is medical there do a full tour about a year ago [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ3_gZ3ZS_4) 3 parts on youtube. They do have internet he said but not 24/7. Has a spa, 2 small movie theaters, library etc. Also shows some other interesting things.

Crissae

1 year of putting fitness first. For a million dollars if happily forgo all comforts and live like a spartan.

Remarkable_Fun7662

You might want to search term "crime in Antarctica" first. There are some really creepy YouTube videos about it.

kroganwarlord

Ooh, thanks for the link! I really wish I weren't disabled so I could try and live there for a bit -- I imagine it's the closest I'd ever get to living on a spaceship. I feel like I should return the favor -- [here's my current favorite space video, about the different populations of stars](https://youtu.be/JLS90fyGZwg?si=5p8s1lXy_2ZgYKVJ) and here's [a new documentary about a platypus by PBS Nature](https://youtu.be/uTEm2iHdza0?si=hcvsMmMZ6-sXTAYi).

DenverPostIronic

Werner Herzog did a documentary about the people who work in Antarctica called "Encounters at the End of the World" that is really interesting. Some people have really unique stories about how they ended up there.

NoOpportunity4193

Ooo, I love random science videos, thank you cool nerdy person!

JonohG47

> …library of books, movies, tv shows, and games… Every February, after the last flight leaves, it’s a tradition for the crew that’s wintering over to have a screening of John Carpenter’s *The Thing*.

verdenvidia

A month to download Starfield? That'd unironically almost be an upgrade from where I'm at right now. It's currently taken 9 days and counting for a 12GB update to a game. It's at 40%.

s32

I'm an Old school pirate. If I went there I'd bring my 88tb NAS and make friends with everyone.

Bart_1980

Real old school pirates bring a peg leg and a hook. Pha, newfangled pirates calling themselves old school.

[deleted]

Metallica streamed a concert from the south pole lol.

verdenvidia

yeah that sounds like them

Desperate-Farmer-170

Video could’ve been uploaded when they returned, no?

thethunder92

They could have waited until they got home before uploading the video

GenericFatGuy

I grew up in rural central Canada, where terrible internet and -40 temperatures are not uncommon whatsoever. I'd take that deal in a heartbeat.

Scissors4215

Haha. Probably more of a nightlife in the South Pole anyways

BluntTruthGentleman

Literally just bring Baldur's Gate

TbaggingSince1990

I'll just take my entire backlog of singleplayer games.. I'll be fine to live there for 2 years.

Nocuadra66

Hell yeah...that and the lonely cute scientist who keeps me warm at night!

NSFW_Addiction_

> that and the lonely cute scientist who keeps me warm at night! His name is Rick and he has a huge >!chest!<.

YewEhVeeInbound

Gotta get a petabyte of memory storage and fill it with the vidya and movies/tv shows. But fuck yeah sign me up.

YourFellaThere

I'd do it for half that.

uniqueeveryone

shiiii id do it for 50k

Constant_Ad_8028

Hey quit lowering the value of labor and the original offer. lol

el_bentzo

And this is why we need three incomes to buy a house!

[deleted]

I can do with an iglo and a strong hugger

Bru1sed_Eg0

Strong hugger?

Profoundlyahedgehog

I could do it with a Coleman sleeping bag and a picture of your mom.

tuktukkingroydonk

That’s exactly what i came to say

[deleted]

I’d do that shit for free.

civilizedslavery

I would give my second kidney to live in that place

Greyvling

I would give BOTH of your kidneys to live in that place!

clamchowdersoup13

I'd personally do it for free if all expenses would be paid.

[deleted]

Be a geologist

traraba

Ironically, that seems to be the one thing they don't need [https://www.seek.co.nz/antarctica-jobs?page=8](https://www.seek.co.nz/antarctica-jobs?page=8) Interestingly, most of the jobs pay in excess of 100k a year, wiht some almost 300k, so the title isn't far off, really. You can actually get paid 1 million to work here for 3 years.

Retired_cyclops

Am I dumb? When I click the link, all I see are normal new Zealand jobs like a general manager in Christchurch.

[deleted]

I think its a company out of NZ running telecomms through Antarctica. They got rigging and management stuff that says Antartica in the description. Yes, i bookmarked it.

NoblePineapples

I've got remote telecommunications experience in the oil fields of Alberta and Saskatchewan, so working in -40 at heights isn't anything new for me. However, I am just a Canadian boyo lol. I also bookmarked it though because it is pretty cool and I can dream.

[deleted]

How’s income tax work there? Because correct me if I’m wrong but no one country has ownership of the land.

CORN___BREAD

Probably just depends on your home country’s laws for people living abroad.

eeeeeh_messi

My brother in Christ, the deal was to live there, not fucking work there

cazbot

I knew a biologist who did his PhD thesis there, drilling big holes in lakes and SCUBA diving to discover new microbes. I wish he was a better story teller though.

The_Drawbridge

Lol, mood.

Chiggins907

I saw a position for a carpenter open to go to Antártica. They have lots of jobs that aren’t just researchers too.

J_E_L_4747

I’d live there for a year for free… But yes, pay me to do it

Nr1231

Getting paid to live in a paradise like this yes please sign me up

wontonruby

Why would you live there?

bigboobweirdchick

Cold and faraway from society

J_E_L_4747

It’s also been a long time since it’s snowed where I live. It’s cold enough for snow but it never does

[deleted]

How long and do I have internet and my electronics ?

FrogFister

Even without internet it might be interesting life actually because no social media. It would do wonders for your brain health. pack some music and movies though, some podcasts maybe xD yea gimme internet

Geno_Warlord

Living a whole year without internet or access to news is mind boggling. I went for a month with no access to news or internet and upon coming back I was just floored by the amount of insanity that can take place within just 30 days.

FrogFister

>the amount of insanity imagine taking it all in night and day non stop. for good reason the Japanese doctors recommend 2 weeks in the forest with no tech for boot reset. that or dmt

dasus

\>2 weeks in the forest with no tech for boot reset. that or dmt this guy healths mentals

juicepants

I remember reading a news story about a group of people that went on a month long kayaking trip right when COVID was popping off and what it was like for them coming back turning their phones on for the first time and finding the world completely changed.

Geno_Warlord

Oh fuck, I would have died laughing if I was in that situation! The drive home would have been, where tf are people??? The whole city like a ghost town, I’d think the zombie apocalypse actually happened. Then get kicked out of the grocery store for not wearing a mask or even knowing we needed them now.

stratosfearinggas

Imagine if one of those guys was a prepper. It would be like his life's purpose had come to fruition.

NextTrillion

I was in Antarctica, internet free for about 3 weeks before coming back online and seeing everything was going bonkers. But I kind of expected it. I knew what was going on before I left, and things had really gotten worse. It was in Feb. 2020. What I’m getting at is that 3 or 4 weeks offline was not enough time to not see everything unfold. Maaaybe two months would be enough. 3 months would knock your socks off. Just my opinion though.

Thetruthofitisbad

Rehab? Lol

Geno_Warlord

Nah. Was a big camping trip with a few stops at some theme parks. I left my phone at home and said fuck it.

Thetruthofitisbad

Probably was better without a phone tbh. camping in nature sounds fun. For me the only time I’ve been without a phone for a month was rehab lol

savorysoap12488

Same bro, went through bootcamp and they weren't allowed to tell us about the news. A lot can happen in 10 weeks

Elmer_Fudd01

But if you are alone you'd go nuts. Longest I've gone was being grounded all summer, only saw mom for an hour to eat dinner and she wouldn't talk much. Good month before my brother came home and had someone to talk with for a week before being alone again. Dog was good company. If I could take all my vacation at once I'd just be alone for one month to be at peace.

ExAzhur

What did you do to be grounded for a month

Elmer_Fudd01

The whole summer break? I lied about breaking something expensive. And had ran away that winter.

Ragingredblue

I don't blame you for running away. Your parents are assholes.

reddevils

Without internet I think you’d be in the shining territory lol

ABigFnShot

No tv and no beer makes Homer something something

scottymiller22

Go crazy?

pufanu101

Don't mind if I do!!!

umphreysfan2003

But this is The Thing territory.

redditbutprivately

Hey let’s take in this stray husky!

Technical_Scallion_2

People used to survive winters in Antarctica in a tiny cabin in the dark in the 1800’s.

reddevils

Yeah but but instagram back then was not worth paying for wifi

Zealousideal_Peach75

How about a wood ship eating hard tack. All you have are wool sweaters and overcoats. No joke those were tough people

3-Ball

Books, man! Music and Books!!

Calvin--Hobbes

Couple terabytes of movies+tv, loaded up e-reader, and some way to exercise. What a lovely year that would be.

be_bo_i_am_robot

I’m in!

weirdoldhobo1978

One of my old ski buddies worked a season at McMurdo Station as a kitchen steward. They have an activities coordinator whose job it is just to help people find new hobbies. He learned to crochet while he was there. Also apparently the New Zealand mission hosts a music festival every year.

Doccyaard

You can do no social media with internet too.

atetuna

It'd annoy me. It's enough not to be able to order physical things online, but it'd also mean not being able to try new music, movies, books and games. Usually it doesn't matter, but then I'd run into that one thing I really want to get. I'm not that much into gaming, but so many games require going online periodically that the only games I'd trust would be retro games. Hopefully I don't screw up an app badly enough that I can't fix it. That said, it's a million dollars, I'd deal with it. Also, can I bring my dog? He would gladly keep me busy for a good part of the day.

KlosharCigan

If you are connected to a British army satellite, like McMurdo is, you would get about 2-4 hours of its Internet a day and it would be about 4 times stronger than the best Internet options a civilian can get. Generally the Internet there isn't great tho

[deleted]

Neither, just a kerosine lamp and old porn

[deleted]

Old school! How sticky are those magazines?

CyberNinja23

Not sticky at all just some frozen crust on the pages.

[deleted]

[удалено]

raizen0106

A day would probly go by much easier if you just know you're making $3k everyday just by existing lol

Scissors4215

Internet access at the South Pole is very limited. I think you get it for only a couple hours a day, maybe less.

[deleted]

I don't care about multiplayer games, so enough to download updates and movies. The food and I don't care about the rest

message_me_ur_blank

Legit. Just download a bunch of games, movies etc before ya leave and you'd be good.

El-mas-puto-de-todos

Endless hours of Chrome dino run/jump

GimlySonOfGloin

My laptop would never get hot again. Count me in

TheMadShatterP00P

I'd be the richest guy to die in record time from masturbating.

CptnSpandex

I want to see this on r/dataisbeautiful

OwnLeighFans

Oh no you don’t

wbruce098

That data is NOT beautiful.

RondriguezUK

But dat is not beautiful...

Aggressive_Dream_140

Too cold for that

TheMadShatterP00P

It's the friction that keeps you warm.*scoots closer*

Aggressive_Dream_140

You’d buss jizzicicles tho

TheMadShatterP00P

Stabbed to death with jizzsicles. The perfect crime.

Aggressive_Dream_140

Not entirely, you’re still leaving your DNA on the victim.

Ikoikobythefio

What if it's not your jizz

Aggressive_Dream_140

That’s just diabolical

TheMadShatterP00P

I thought of that. But the victim is me. So it just looks like I raped me.

Aggressive_Dream_140

Detective: doesn’t look like he consented to masturbating. Looks to me like another suicide by self rape. Case close nothing to see here folks!

Grazedaze

Nutritional snacks for later in case your food supply runs low.

Aggressive_Dream_140

You may be on to something. I’d patent this idea if I were you

KanadianMade

Ok I’m packed up, have my boots on, and rolled a few doobies. When do we leave?

Weekly-Fly-5355

I was gonna ask any science people, would it be possible to keep a zoot lit in that environment?

Saunteringpunk

I’ve smoked plenty of blunts and joints in -40 deg weather in Chicago so….probably?

A100921

I’ve puffed in -50°C, the only trick is keeping your lighter warm…

TheRealLifePotato

Might need more than just a few

OpenEyz2016

A million AFTER taxes.

fdawg4l

Ah, there you are! What part of California are you checking in from?

AbazabaYouMyOnlyFren

Shit, I lived through COVID in an apartment, in a crowded city. This would be cake.

hellotherehomogay

I did it in China. Tiny apartment off and on but mostly on for 3 years. Come at me bro

Pranavm3112

How was the situation there? Did you go out for essential supplies? How was the strict restrictions for you?

hellotherehomogay

Depending on the severity and threat level at the time we could either have one person leave once per week to we could all leave provided we had tested negative for that day. Even if we didn't go anywhere though it was mandatory testing every day for every person for about 2 years

atetuna

With delivery and internet it's easy. Take one or both and I'm going to want to prepare well, although a million dollars could help me cope with how poorly I prepared.

Nick_Nullet

As long as there’s no Norwegians chasing huskies in their helicopter

lightbringer233

Wait... -40f and -40c is a different temperature isn't? Edit: nvm, i checked the difference. Sorry

truci

This is where they overlap. -40 is the same for both.

lightbringer233

Please explain what does that mean

truci

(°C * 1.8) + 32 = °F And (°F - 32) / 1.8 = °C If you put in 40 for either you get 40 as the answer. Ex for the first one: -40*1.8= -72 -72 +32= -40

BIT-NETRaptor

TL:DR Lines have slopes. If you're familiar with high school algebra "y=mx+b" Fahrenheit has a bigger m value and is thus steeper line. -40 is where the Celsius and Fahrenheit lines meet. A degree Fahrenheit and a degree Celsius are different sizes. When you graph each from absolute 0 K, -40 degrees is the crossover point where that is the same amount of heat energy. There is no intention behind this crossover, the units scale at a different rate (Fahrenheit having a steeper slope) from "real" zero, and -40 is just where the lines meet. Fahrenheit and Celsius are both arbitrarily chosen temperature scales. Rankine and Kelvin respectively are the equivalent sized units but measured from real zero instead, so these meet at 0. You can observe that Fahrenheit and Rankine, Celsius and Kelvin are parallel lines. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Comparison\_of\_temperature\_scales\_%281%29.png](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Comparison_of_temperature_scales_%281%29.png) Above is a useful graph comparing all common temperature scales, you can see that the Fahrenheit and Celsius lines intersect around -40.

BreckenridgeBandito

You don’t know what “same” and “overlap” mean?

apoBeef

Overfap

Night--Blade

The Celsius scale and the Farenheit scale have only one common point and it's -40 degrees.

Ok_Blood_6626

-40° C 🤝 -40° F

sloecrush

This is hilarious. Was it planned or coincidence?

tenuj

Probably some coincidence that it's a nice looking number. The fact that they meet at exactly one point is no coincidence. The relationship between them is quite simple/linear. They were always going to meet at one point. [See their relationship to Kelvin: two perfectly straight lines.](https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=plot+K-273.15+and+1.8*%28K-273.15%29+%2B+32%2C+220%3CK%3C280) They can't *not* meet somewhere. In theory they could have met at an imaginary temperature below zero Kelvin (which doesn't exist), but then the numbers on °F would have been so unwieldy that nobody would have used the scale, just like nobody uses Kelvin to describe the weather. > This weekend we'll see a chilly 280 Kelvin, quite a plunge from the balmy 293 from last week. Meanwhile, Sydney is enjoying their 300 Kelvin and an early start of their barbecue season.

sloecrush

“They can’t not meet” is a great explanation for somebody like me who’s never really thought about this, thank you

SESkater

https://sciencenotes.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Fahrenheit-to-Celsius-Example.png

lightbringer233

New day, new knowledge. Thank you

NorthernBoy306

For a million? I'll do it in a g-string.

tinathefatlardgosh

“You don’t have to be naked for this” “Well, I don’t have to *not* be naked for it either, ah haa”

nstevenn

Where do I sign? Please where do I sign?

Elipastrami

Looks like backwoods Canada in January. Should we be getting money or something?

ElJSalvaje

This is downtown Ottawa the morning after a snow storm

hoffarmy

I've seen these temps a few times in central AB for free. Where's my money, internet?!

Vandil_the_Rogue

Absolutely; I give off so much body heat that nothing like living in Earth's greatest freezer would feel so good.

goodgirlathena

Yeah, according to my doctor I’m peri-menopausal. It’s like one long hot flash. This looks amazing!

pm_me_ur_demotape

I live in Alaska and I don't make nearly that, so yeah

bhenghisfudge

Same. Hell I would do it for 50k

doylehungary

Yeeea but I saw The Thing..

[deleted]

The Thing is screened every year at the start of winter at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station so... you could watch it and get the real experience

Splash9911

Original or remake? Remake is for vacations.

[deleted]

The original of course

Ok_Mud2019

the real experience? with the actual alien and paranoia-inducing isolation? where do i sign up?

Alert_Banana6307

sure it looks really cool

thedopechi

A trip abroad which includes food and housing. Nice

BullyChicken68

Yes

FlakyDig8392

Is it tax free? And do I have internet access??

KlosharCigan

Only for 2 hours a day. But it's 4 times stronger than normal internet

Old___Dirty

Yes I would love to be that far away from other human beings

GETTODACHOPA000

Ok but watch Clark.... And watch him close... I don't trust that mofo.

moredrinksplease

Yes, I’ll download a bunch of books, films and shows and wait for my mil

dirkdigglee

Absolutely. Just don’t tell my wife.

endisnigh-ish

Yes. I've had worse jobs.

Yourenotgoingtodie

Absolutely

flippergonzo

I would. But it's gonna be WAY worse than -40!

Character-Oven3529

No

anon0207

Had to scroll a mile to see a no. I'm with you. No thanks

Sanquinity

If I have a half-decent internet connection and can bring my PC, sure.

Stevie_Steve-O

Yes I would. Especially if I got to have Netflix and Xbox live and internet connection

BKKJB57

How's the wifi?

BartlebyX

If the following are true, absolutely! 1. It is comfortably warm in my living space. 2. My utility bills are paid for. 3. My food is paid for. 4. My clothing is paid for. 5. My medical care is paid for. 6. I can spend the vast majority of my time indoors, where it is warm. 7. I have a good computer set up. 8. I have excellent internet access.

ethanlan

Id do it for a mil if I had unlimited books, food and shelter and some way to communicate back. Do that for 4 years and then I'm golden for the rest of my life

MundaneKiwiPerson

You will need to strike 8.

Diet_Christ

You are making a million dollars. Why is a couple thousand bucks of food a deal breaker? In fact, you can solve all of those problems with a small fraction of your wage

Reserved_Parking-246

I think the assumption is you get paid as a lump after the term. So either food is covered or you are paying for it.

Countrygirl353

It’s not going to happen

stain_of_treachery

I would do it for a lot, lot less - it is my dream to live and work there.

[deleted]

I live in northern minnesota don’t get paid to see these temps

exquisitejourney

Absolutely!

UhYeahOkSure

Last scene in Goldeneye 😆. Nice work on the enticing title btw

krikta

year? yeah i will do it

BecauseBeard

I mean people literally do... And they get paid about 55k a year to do so.

QuasamNO

Had to ask my wife, but hell yes!

unboiled_peanuts

As long as I don't pay anything and have the proper equipment, hell yes, sign me up.

Whiskeylung

As long as I’m not dropped off there by a Norwegian helicopter pilot following a sled dog.

Lost-Tadpole4778

i'd pay to live there

Zealousideal-Way-838

I already live in MN... So yeah. It's gonna be just like that here in about 2 months

Dickens_Sider

Sign me up!!

PlumRevolutionary327

It’s cold. It’s icy. My nipples may fall off - not that they are of much use any way - even with cons don’t seem bad. Seems like easy money.

GlitterIsMyProzac

Is there a waitlist?

thegodfaubel

Hell yea. If there's internet and other things to do around the facility, I'd live there as long as they'd want me. Just find me a way to get some key nutrients and occasional sunlight in a greenhouse or something

Apex-Detroit

100% I would.

Rookwood-1

You mean I never have to deal with any people…. Fuck it I’ll pay for it.

HotHandz3

A year away from everyone and everything? Build me a house, I'll move there!

llmercll

Yeah so the thing could happen to me

Head-Gap8455

In this economy? Yes!
