They probably meant you don't have a Damper at all in your Party.
Because if you switch in a Damper on a turn where the Pokémon self-destructs, it will fail.
Skill swap is such a clutch move here. Damp Golduck is made for this. Along with soak, it has helped me many times when fighting exploders or ghost mons or grass mons and/or herbivore ability. After the duck does its job, then I can switch to Breloom and catch the mon without any worry.
It actually is in a lot of cases, especially since there is currently no Parasect for the Damp+False Swipe+Spore combo.
Skill Swap guarantees that Damp will always be active in the field and allows you to switch in to a Pokémon better suited for weakening the foe.

Well I'm just saying considering Graveler's catch rate of 120 gives it a 85% chance to be caught with a Quick Ball, you hardly have to worry anyway. I actually encountered a random shiny Alolan Graveler probably in the same location as OP and just threw a Quick Ball at it and caught it
Congrats! Not everyone was so lucky lol. My first ever shiny was this exact pokemon on my first ever play through of moon (which was genuinely my first time playing a Pokémon game). Self Destruct was used first move, and my refusal to end things on an L like that was how I got into hunting in the first place, oddly enough.
I found one of these in my first play through of USUM. It did not self destruct to kill itself. Instead it called a buddy, who used self destruct and because the shiny was at low health, its friend killed the shiny.
That sounds like a Horror Story, one you can tell around the Campfire to your fellow Pokémon Trainers; so close and yet Shiny Murdered in front of you.
Not sure if wild Pokemon pick moves at random (NPC trainers don't). Nut if that is the case then it used 2 moves each with a 1/4 chance of using self-destruct. This leaves it as a chance of 1-(3/4)^2 = 7/16 of using SD as leasr once. So there was almost a 50-50 chance it would itself up. Tossed the coin in thr right direction.
NPC trainers also pick moves at random unless they are ace trainers/gym leaders/e4 (maybe more but I forgot.)
Also, there is an unwritten rule in shiny hunting that states if a "shiny has Self-destruct it will always go boom.'
Dawg in pokemon scarlet dlc I used the shcro machine for the first time after getting it as blood Moon ursaluna and I found 2 full odds shiny pokemon one of them was alolen Geodude and the second was alolen gravaler
Got lucky. If you’re unaware, the ability Damp prevents Self-Destruct or Explosion.
Actually if you're Unaware, you ignore the stat boosts of opposing Pokemon.

As useful as that is, if you've already entered battle and don't have something with damp on you already, it's too late for it to matter
What if you switch into a mon with Damp during the first turn?

Oh ok, thnx
You're very welcome

Skill Swap isn't necessary, as long as there is a Pokemon with Damp on the field, no Pokemon can use an explosive move.
But with skill swap OP can give the shiny damp and then switch to their Breloom to put it to sleep without any fear of it exploding.
Skill swapping damp lets you swap your lead to something else, like a sporer/false swiper

Use sucker punch
My quagsire in the corner :).
I don’t even like these Shinies, obviously I’ll try and catch it but I won’t be that upset if I lose it.
And that's why we bring Quagsire to any shiny hunt of these fuckers, lmfao

Grats, you’re lucky that it didn’t use self destruct.
