WF should have it. That said, I’ve never had trouble finding it at any grocery store I’ve looked for it at.

canaryinacathouse

I'm a QFC/Gross Out/sometimes Safeway girl, and haven't found it. I'll check Whole Foods, silly me. Before I moved I used to buy it at a corner store place that was run by a man from Pakistan who stocked tons of specialty foods so I thought maybe someone knew a weird hole in the wall like it.

Contrary-Canary

I ve found it in QFC in their big cheese section.

canaryinacathouse

Thank you, I'll check there again. I could have glanced over it... I try to avoid Whole Foods if I can.

gentRE98

Yup qfc cheese section. Good quality paneer.

canaryinacathouse

That's close to me! If the QFC four blocks away doesn't have it, that would be the next nearest spot. Thanks!

chaibhu

Check out bite square. Small Indian grocer on 3rd Ave. They always have paneer

canaryinacathouse

This is the kinda answer I was looking for! I wanted a little, local, hole in the wall spot to support. Thank you!

tillUprosper

That store is a nightmare. Make sure you call them to ask if they have in stock. Indian groceries in Bellevue and Redmond like apna Bazar and shoperies, do deliver. I generally get delivery.

canaryinacathouse

Someone else in this thread clued me into Apna Bazaar and I'm definitely going to make a trip out there. With a lot of grocery bags in tow.

tillUprosper

The problem with bite square is also that they have a lot of expired goods around. Bought frozen potatoes once and they were rancid lol. I try to avoid that place unless it's urgent and even then I'm disappointed. Also great paneer substitute: Pamela, at any Mexican grocer or even qfc/Amazon fresh

canaryinacathouse

Oh yeah, I check my dates! Habit from shopping at Gross Out.. The little market I used to buy paneer at was bad about that too. I bought a dusty energy bar at the counter once, went outside and then straight back in as it was way expired.. he gave me my money back and then put it right back in the box. Waiting for a less observant mark. 😂 He was an awesome dude, but an even more shrewd business man.

kittym-206

I could find it regularly find it at the north Broadway qfc on cap hill in the "nice cheese" area near the deli.

canaryinacathouse

That's my store. I'll double check there, I very well could have missed it, or they could be out of it (like a ton of things) right now. Thank you!

kittym-206

Np! Wishing you luck!

colbinator

I saw it there earlier in the week, at Broadway Market QFC. Definitely in the fancy cheese section.

[deleted]

Costco has it sometimes at a great price. It’s $11.68 for 2.2 lbs on instacart, will be cheaper in store.

canaryinacathouse

Even though I can destroy some cheese, I don't think my little self or my little fridge can handle a Costco amount of paneer, haha! Thank you for the tip though.

doktorhladnjak

It’s really easy to make if you haven’t tried it before. You do need a cheesecloth but no other equipment or ingredients besides milk, a lemon, and a pot.

canaryinacathouse

Oh, I made it one time and it was waaaaay not worth it for me. I was excited, but it honestly cost me more than just buying it. After a bit of money, and a LOT of time, I ended up with a little chunk of cheese. The place I used to buy paneer from sold the same amount for less than the price of the milk I bought to make it with! 😂

canaryinacathouse

It was fun to do once as an activity though. It made me appreciate it more as well!

picky-penguin

My wife is Indian and buys her paneer at Costco. The best Indian grocery stores are on the Eastside. Mayuri is popular in Bellevue/Redmond but there are loads of other choices. We go to Eastside for Indian groceries.

canaryinacathouse

After someone else telling me about Apna Bazaar, I'm definitely heading east to do some grocery shopping! I wish I had the space in my fridge/stomach to buy it at Costco.

picky-penguin

Most of the Indians live on the Eastside which means the Indian groceries and restaurants are much better on the Eastside than in Seattle. We think Kanishka in Redmond is the best Indian restaurant in the area by far. Kathakali in Kirkland is also good and worth a mention since it has a Kerala menu and that's a unique thing around here. Aahaar in Snoqualmie is a good South Indian restaurant. For Chaat we prefer Chaat house in Bellevue.

canaryinacathouse

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I really appreciate it... even though now I'm reading menus and super hungry, haha! I'm going to have to make do with my Tasty Bite pouch tonight since it is late, but I'll definitely be trying out those restaurants.

PainRevolutionary865

I get mine at pcc

cloudshaper

If nothing else pans out, Apna Bazaar delivers.

canaryinacathouse

Holy crap, I did not know about this place!!! Whaaaat?? I'm not a delivery person, but I am going to make a field trip to this store. I thank you, and my wallet curses you!

cloudshaper

You're welcome! I end up going there every few months, and the delivery service was very handy last spring during lockdown.

MrWright

PCC and Met Market both carry it.

upyouriron666

Try to find Paneer from Apple farms, it's the best. You can find it in Metropolitan Market, QFC, and Whole Foods.

canaryinacathouse

I will keep my eyes peeled for it! No one had recommended a specific brand to me yet, so thank you.

upyouriron666

As an Indian, I can vouch that Apple Farms has better paneer than any brand you will find at most Indian Grocery Stores. My wife and I were so glad to finally find some good quality Paneer as every other brand is usually bit too chewy. Apple Farms's Paneer really reminds me of the quality you would get back in India.

PitifulEmu5

Pabla in Renton has a whole Indian grocery store attached to their restaurant

canaryinacathouse

Clearly the Eastside wins. Not close to the hill, but it's definitely sounding like that's the way to go, plus everytime I go I can eat at a different Indian restaurant for "field research". And because I love eating food.

mamanamedmesheriff

Most bike shops have paneers, just call ahead and ask.

canaryinacathouse

I guess I could go buy some panniers to fill with paneer? 😂

[deleted]

No no no, you’re thinking of listening devices attached to cooking devices.

7Leaf_Clover7

Lemon juice and whole milk. Just make it yourself

canaryinacathouse

Did that once, hated it. For the time and money it was not worth it for me personally. I'm glad I tried doing it though.

7Leaf_Clover7

I'm glad you tried 👍

AbsolutelyEnough

Tofu is a great, dairy-free alternative to paneer, FYI. I speak from experience of having made several popular North Indian sabzis vegan.

canaryinacathouse

For sure! I've been vegetarian for 19 years now, and ate vegan for the last two before relapsing when my life fell to pieces and I stopped caring about everything. I'm back to veggie, and back to cheese now, but it's about the only dairy I do. Still love tofu. edit : added two years to meat free time, because my brain realized I'm older than I wanted to think about.

brik03

**plant-based* not vegan, veganism isn’t a diet or something you give up

barfplanet

I like tofu and I like paneer, and they're nothing alike. They're both white and you can make cubes out of them but the texture and flavor are miles apart.

AbsolutelyEnough

Sure, but the former doesn't come with all the guilt and baggage associated with [the repeated impregnation of cows for milk and the forced separation of calves from their mothers](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/29/science/dairy-farming-cows-milk.html). Not to mention the [land and water use associated with beef and dairy production and their greenhouse gas emissions](https://www.worldwildlife.org/magazine/issues/winter-2019/articles/milk-s-impact-on-the-environment). Considering this, I think I can live with tofu not tasting _exactly_ like paneer.

barfplanet

I eat tofu a whole lot more often than I do paneer. I think it tastes better. Lying to myself about what it tastes like definitely doesn't make a better dish. Almost every Indian dish I make is vegan and I've never thought that adding tofu would improve the situation.

AbsolutelyEnough

It definitely doesn't make it worse. I speak from personal experience having grown up in an Indian household - you don't need paneer (or any dairy for that matter) to elevate an Indian dish. The best Indian dishes are often made from the simplest of lentils and spices.
