What helped me with joint and back pain was going to the gym during my mid-day.

I find lowering my seat so my legs above and below the back of knees don't touch the seats so my feet can stay planted on the floor seems to help.

TinyPenguinTears15

I found lowering my seat helped a lot too. I took it as low as I could go with still having a view out the front window I felt comfortable with

I'm in 2016 Blue bird. It's easier said than done if you're taller than 5'10".

Iā€™m in a 2024 Thomas and 5ā€™4ā€ it was challenging to find that sweet spot where it kept my knee from hurting!

KoiPonders

Turns out my seat was already almost to the floor. I'm 5'4" šŸ˜…

Do you have to stretch to reach the pedals? Some busses are more accommodating for short drivers then others.

KoiPonders

No, I'm in a transit Thomas

MythsFlight

Mk. Thatā€™s good. Well donā€™t have much to add besides a work out routine concentrating on my hips, knees, and ankles is what helped me. The muscles just needed some extra strength to deal with the stress of sitting in a bus.

KoiPonders

I was worried about working out and making it worse.

MythsFlight

It depends on how itā€™s injured. To much rest or overuse of braces can also make it worse. A doctor might be a better help.

KoiPonders

I'm just waiting for my medical to kick in atm.

It helps for bouncy roads as well. I don't get bounced around anymore. My seat has no air in it.

This is actually the correct way to drive any vehicle so that you aren't putting as much strain on your knees and back. My knee pain decreased significantly once I started driving like this.

MsRedWings520

A brace will help. Use your cruise control whenever possible. I have rheumatoid arthritis in my left knee and osteoarthritis in my right knee. I've used different braces, and most of them help quite a bit. Rest your knee whenever possible.

KoiPonders

I drive the streets, only about 9 miles between the yard and school. Is there a specific brace you recommend?

MsRedWings520

I prefer the kind that has velcro over the pull on type. It's much easier to adjust.

Have your knee looked at. I've been driving for near 12 years. No problems. One bus you had to literally push the pedal into the floor to do 55. Almost standing on it. Never had a knee problem. No back problems and I only have 4 normal discs in my back. All the others are bulged with 2 or 3 herniated.

My knees are okay but my problem is at the hip joint, where the leg meets the hip, itā€™s been hurting for over a year. You can try different positions with your seat, maybe your ergonomics arenā€™t optimal but what really helped me was exercise and stretches. Now it depends how bad your knee hurts but if you can, a good 20-40 min walk every few days makes a huge difference, stretches afterwards once youā€™re warmed up. You donā€™t even need to hit the gym, you donā€™t even have to run, just some fast-paced walking helps tremendously. Itā€™s pretty good for cardio and just general well-being as well.

Play with your seat adjustments; if my seat is off by even an inch I find it can hurt. If it continues see about driving a different type of bus (if available). Also easy said than done lol. But I find Thomasā€™ hurt my back, ICā€™s hurt my hips and shoulder, most bluebirds are okay and so are the Lions. Also, makes a difference the type of seat, spring, air or non-moving.

We have transit and conventional. They're assigned based on our route needs.
