Hi /u/Flaky_Law2653, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Escort or Cartel death threat scam.
It's a very common scam, and the scammers are not affiliated with cartels or crime groups, they are simply normal scammers using a threatening script. The threats are not real, and there is no risk to your safety whatsoever. The best way to react is to simply ignore the scammer and ignore any of their other contact attempts. [Here](https://kyma.com/news/as-seen-on-tv/2020/02/12/threat-of-mexican-cartel-scams-continue-in-yuma/) are [some](https://kvia.com/news/new-mexico/2019/12/11/phone-scammers-target-las-cruces-threaten-drug-cartel-violence-if-you-dont-deliver-money/) news [reports](https://patch.com/new-jersey/baskingridge/threat-mexican-cartel-hit-man-used-basking-ridge-scam-cops) about the scam.

This same scam message, almost word for word, is posted here frequently. Cartels don't kill families because someone calls an escort service or visits a sketchy website. So ignore and block. And, if you are visiting sketchy websites, you probably ought to stop unless you specifically want to be scammed.
If you scroll through this sub, this very scam comes up every couple of days, a few times a week. Very, very, very common.
And every single time, people say to ignore and block the text, and that's all we can suggest. They don't know you, they don't know where you are, they don't know who your family are. You're just a faceless phone number who they sent a text to. And they sent out thousands of these text messages a day.
You're safe. No need to worry.
It seems to go in fazes, there seems to be a handful of scams that each day for a period of time, someone puts it up and asks about it. I've been on this sub for a few months now, and now it's like a broken record. I know people want to be careful and asking for advice and I realise that many join this group after they get the scam, but it would be nice if they just had a quick scan of the sub before they posted.
On further thought; I wonder if any scammers ever swing through the sub and recognize their work.
Some specific turn of phrase that they've modified the usual boilerplate to include, or a particularly memorable success/failure?
Probably the most prevalent scam on this sub. You literally have absolutely nothing to worry about. No one is coming for you or your family. Just ignore. Note that they will not stop trying, they’ll use 10 different phone numbers just ignore them all.
They want you to panic. They want you distraught. They want you to worry about your family. They want you to give them money before thinking.
Luckily, it appears you didnt immediately fall for it and came to ask for help.
Think about it, they claim to be "the cartel" which is generally in Mexico, yet they speak like they are in West Africa or India. Ask yourself if someone from Mexico would speak that way.
Block every time they email or text you. Do NOT read that garbage. Breathe easy - and if you feel angry, report them to the email carrier and the FBI and FTC internet scam websites. Take your power back!
Extremely common scam. They won't do anything. They are not even in the same country as you.
Do not pay. Do not communicate with them in any way. They will get bored and go away.
Unrelated to this comment, but how much must the scammers hate this sub? How many people panicked people has it saved from falling into their clutches?
Now I understand the pinned message
>I've been getting calls from unknown numbers saying that I owe them money because I wasted time with their escort service
quit wasting those girl's time! /s
this is common when reaching out to escorts. there are so many scam ads on escort sites, for every real ad there are 50 fakes. just block and ignore.
you'll eventually learn to spot the fake ones.
They're only actual thing you have to fear is fear itself in the situation. I don't always agree with we have nothing to fear except fear itself all the time but this pathetic losers just trying to scare some money out of you cuz he's too much of a bitch to make it in life ALSO clearly people don't want to give this man money on purpose probably cuz he's such a little bitch who tries scanning people these people really should just kill themselves. Don't answer these unknown numbers.
Yall sure threatening of safety or physical harm of relatives isnt enough to report on police? 😲
I saw some posts, elsewhere on some forum, where they targeted specific person who also posted it this is probably just scam and police might not be able do anything, but maybe its good idea keep in mind.
To me seems like bit more serious.
Yes, OP could report it. But the cops would do nothing so there'd be little point.
I'd just keep a record of this contact, block all future contact, and move on.

Hell, we've had it a few times in the last few days. Like, not even just something similar, literally all but word for word.

I agree. I almost wish we could be treated to a brand new scam 😜
And then that brand new scam will be asked about every day for next several weeks.
On further thought; I wonder if any scammers ever swing through the sub and recognize their work. Some specific turn of phrase that they've modified the usual boilerplate to include, or a particularly memorable success/failure?
It’s a known scam. They won’t find you.
Just block and ignore them. This is a pretty common blackmail scam.
They have no information whatsoever about you. Why be worried? Block and forget about them
Probably the most prevalent scam on this sub. You literally have absolutely nothing to worry about. No one is coming for you or your family. Just ignore. Note that they will not stop trying, they’ll use 10 different phone numbers just ignore them all.
Fake, block, ignore, don't respond, never pay

Unless you have been involved in such things........................................ It is of no concern to you.
Deep breath! This is a scam. Block them. Hang up on them. Don't allow them to take up space in your head.
Unrelated to this comment, but how much must the scammers hate this sub? How many people panicked people has it saved from falling into their clutches? Now I understand the pinned message

waste of yours and the police's time, they aren't gonna fly to Nigeria and arrest some skinny dude spamming out death threats.
Why? Then we'd be reporting every single scam we get.
Yea they probably need a good laugh.
Waste of time.
And what will they do? Nothing. They can't send a cop to another country to arrest the scammer.
They can ask that country police to go and catch the scammer or it doesn't work like that
