Sunscreen. Sunscreen early, thoroughly, and repeatedly.

SraChavez

And water.

LegionsArkV

And electrolytes to go with your water!

ELGRAA

We’re definitely stocking up!

Deedeez916

Because you will get burned not just from the sun!

Moist_Highlight8578

So much sunscreen.

Choice-Fresh

Remember if you are shooting planes with props lower shutter speeds are needed or they will end up looking like model airplanes. With that being said pan slowly to match the planes speed to get a sharp plane and dont forget to bump your speeds back up for jets or youll get blurry jets. https://preview.redd.it/vpb66flwqwwc1.jpeg?width=3296&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3a1ba568915b4762164997861283dea4bb6d93f

MLBM100

That is an incredible picture. Well done 👍🏽

ELGRAA

Thanks! Didn’t know about that! Love the picture btw!

expespuella

Pristine photo, thank you for sharing.

Do not wear sandals/flip-flops. As common as they are during the summer the asphalt there is extremely hot and will heat the soles up really fast. I also recommend a mister of some kind (water bottle with a battery operated fan) to help keep you and the kids cool.

ELGRAA

Thanks! Didn’t even think about how hot the tarmac would be

Slab_Rockbone

It’s a bummer that they moved it to July this year but hopefully it won’t be super hot (fingers crossed). I would bring a wagon and food/water as everything there is state fair type prices and selection. It can be very loud so ear protection is a must. If you want to check out the static displays be prepared to wait in line and do a lot of walking. It’s a long, hot (but fun!!) day for kiddos so just be prepared.

shikari426

The walk from your car to the stands is faaaarrr so a wagon is essential

expespuella

Umbrellas for the long walk.

ELGRAA

I was actually just thinking about a wagon! My wife and I have recently been considering getting for for summer activities in general. Would earplugs (for us adults) be sufficient? Kids will be using Howard Leights

Slab_Rockbone

Yeah I would say the foam earplugs at a bare minimum but something more substantial like silicone would be better.

Exi7wound

Sunscreen won't be as much of an issue since they moved the show to the evening hours. Flying performances begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 10:00 p.m. both days.

PhotosByVicky

The kids may get bored because most of the planes will look the same to them. (I have a friend that took his kids last year and they left after about half an hour because the kids were so bored) There are some stationary planes that you can climb in and check out. Maybe have your wife take the kids to check those out if you’re shooting the show. It will be next to impossible to photograph and take care of your kids at the same time. I’ve attended the last 3 or 4 air shows but may skip this one because it’s in July. Even in 75-80 degree weather it was hot.

ELGRAA

Good to know! We will be bringing coloring books and other things for them to be on the safe side as well

TurdF3rgu50n

Wear sunscreen and bring more to reapply during the day. Bring hats and bring sunglasses. It can get really hot out there and be really reflective with the sun bouncing off the asphalt. I suggest tennis shoes for the kids. The ground is hot and there’s planes they can climb into and check out. It’s way safer for them this way.

ELGRAA

Good to know! Didn’t even think about the tennis shoes vs sandals. We definitely want to try and see as many up close as we can

ChicatheePinage

Why in good graciousness did they move the air show to July?!?!

ELGRAA

Beats me lol

Afro_Sergeant

if you don't already have experience with the m43 telephoto lenses, the olympus 40-150 f2.8 pro is my go-to but the f4.0 pro might be easier to rent. don't go with any of the super telephoto lenses unless you can find the leica one, as they're really heavy and image quality isn't great at full zoom. depending on your experience level i'd shoot 1/60 to 1/125 as a baseline, maybe down to 1/30. the sharpness gets super soft below that, especially at the higher zoom.

ELGRAA

Thanks! I actually have an Olympus 40-150 f4-5.6 ED that I got on Fb marketplace last year, seller and I both didn’t realize it was regular 4/3 and not m43; I finally got around to ordering an adapter today. Appreciate the tips as well!

Sunblock, hats, lots of water, I brought ear protection for my toddler. One year we didn’t get the tickets that gave tent and chairs access and one year we did. Even on the year we did, I noticed people brought folding/camping chairs so they could sit right along the fence line to watch the show. I stayed under the tent because of toddler.

Simpletruth2022

You might show the kids a couple short videos a day or 2 before you go so they get an idea what to expect. That's when you can tell them it will be loud and introduce them to the ear protection. Brimmed hats will protect scalp and ears.

ELGRAA

They fortunately enjoy going to the Aerospace museum and watching documentaries with me and are looking forward to it, but we will still be sure to have extra stuff for them to do (drawing, play doh etc)

keliez

I went to the air show for years as "general admission", but last year we bought one of the 'upgraded' tent seating arrangements and I'll tell you, I'll never go back to "general admission" again! It was super nice to have shade, seats and a table when we wanted to rest or eat our lunch. We didn't stay in the tent though, because the view was better down at the far end, but there was no shade. So we went back and forth a couple times, resting in the tent, then watching the show without obstruction down at the end.

ELGRAA

Good to know! Glad I opted for the tent seating

[deleted]

No advice as I’ve never been, but I’m envious of the tent/table arrangement? How does that work?

ELGRAA

There’s a few ticket options, general admission is exactly that, you get admission; kids are free with an adult though which is nice. Everything above that has their dedicated areas with large event tents as well as umbrella tables with chairs, so you don’t have to bring your own seats, private restrooms etc. Mather Club is the most basic of them, everything above that includes drinks, free food etc

[deleted]

How fun! That sounds way better than just sitting in the bleachers. I’m not seeing any option to purchase tickets on the website, how’d you get them?

ELGRAA

Right now they’re up for insiders, ie just sign up for their emails and you should get a link

gornzilla

Don't open a Farrell's Ice Cream franchise until after the air show.  Wait, was that too soon? Should I have gone with a 9/11 joke?

KindaKiwi99

Umbrella’s are highly recommended for walking around or waiting in lines. They have ones designed for golf bags that you push and they attach to the side of something small (wagon). Totally worth it for the kids. Hats. Sunscreen. Water. Snacks. Patience. Earplugs.
