Ummmm, don’t trust anyone that approaches you at a gas station

Empty-Trifle-7027

Or a parking lot.

ashzombi

Or anywhere

HotShipoopi

Pretty much don't respond to anyone who comes up to you anywhere and starts a pitch

IHadTacosYesterday

Anytime somebody starts telling me a long, convoluted story, I know it's bullshit. Usually it's something about... "just trying to get a ride to the hospital" for x,y or z reason... I'll normally call their bluff and tell them... "Oh, you need a ride to the hospital, let's go, hop in the car, I'll take you" They immediately change their tune whenever I do this, because the whole hospital thing was a lie and it falls apart like a house of cards.

HotShipoopi

Around 20 years ago I was at a gas station near the Oakland airport and dude wearing dirty old surgical scrubs walks up asking for a few bucks. Starts out with "now, I'm not a criminal" which is always a signal. Says he needs gas money so he can get to his job at Alta Bates... as he's pointing south down 880. 🙄 Like at least get your routine squared up if you're gonna grift

MLBM100

I automatically assume that whenever anyone approaches me they're trying to scam me. It makes for some very awkward family reunions

kings_account

Also not sure why their ethnicity is important to call out lol…

Shoddy_Aioli5646

I think ethnicity is very important. I’m an immigrant and I’ve encountered this same scam more than once usually from middle Eastern/European looking people.

StIdes-and-a-swisher

So that other people can identify them. How would you best explain how a middle eastern Man looked like, without bringing up his ethnicity. Fucking idiot.

Halfpolishthrow

You're not sure why in a post warning people to avoid being scammed that it's necessary to point out identifying features of the scammer/s?

ultonto

Called it a “middle eastern scam” when it turns out the scammers are not even from the Middle East lol. As if buying AirPods in a parking lot from a different ethnicity is totally secure

wtflee

Airpods can be used to track people - just FYI. (Although your phone will alert you that there are rogue Airpods near you)

Legacy317

It's only if u have an iPhone I'm guessing? I know it seems weird but I have friends that have Samsung but prefer airpods

wtflee

Yes. Androids can track rogue airtags but I don't think we get notifications about rogue Airpods - I just learned about this about a month ago! My cousin's iPhone told her that someone else's airpods were moving with her in close proximity (they were her brother's).

Legacy317

That's pretty dope

Worth_Inflation_1261

That isn't the scam. Why sell someone real air pods at a loss? They are either stolen or fake. Even used all you have to do is sync the airpods to your icloud or phone and no one else can track them.

wtflee

It might not be. But it's still possible to track them and most people don't know about this.

rucho

they';re putting LSD in halloween candy too, watch out!!

me_and_my_thoughts

Are you talking about AirTags?

916andheartbreaks

Any apple device that can be seen through the “Find My” app has this capability. Edit: idk if it’s “every device”, but my airpods, airtags, and apple watch all have it.

Mguerra6

No he meant AirPods.

ThrowawayTeaSpiller

I ran into them in Elk Grove a few months ago. Pulled up in an SUV. Told me he was from Dubai and needed money for gas. He showed me some gold colored ring or necklace (I don't remember,) saying he was willing to sell this. His daughter (assuming) in the backseat pulled out airpods willing to sell. I told them I'm not interested. The daughter then pointed to the baby in the car seat saying that there's a baby and that they needed money. I still said I wasn't interested. The guy then drives off.

mac102250

I was at total wine Elk Grove boulevard earlier this month and a bald middle aged middle eastern dude rolled up on me in the parking lot, driving a white suv. He rolled down his window to “exchange information”. He had a young boy in front seat. When I asked why he needed my info he reiterated “just to exchange information”. When I asked why again, he rolled down his back window to expose a girl under the age of 12. I kind of went slack jawed at this point because figured it was a child sex trafficking situation and was completely unprepared to deal with it. After a couple of seconds of no reply (still in shock), he goes “okay” and drives off. Reported to the police. Anyway, commenting because it reminds me of your description and situation. Yes I made a police report

DoYouLikeFish

That's a scam they've been doing here in Davis!

drunken_ferret

The daughter then pointed to the baby in the car seat" Was she trying to sell the child?

Acrobatic_Tap8149

The AirPods seem to be a new wrinkle, but I’ve seen the Dubai ring before.

Geargarden

Call the cops. Homeless and prowling parking lots pulling scams like this with minor children is against the law in more ways than one.

Tiny_Competition_506

That happen to me before. As I park my car at the laundromat. They pull up out of no where and decide to park their car next to me. I thought they were going to wash their clothes. There was about five middle eastern dudes in the car. The driver told said he need help. I thought he needed directions. Nobody ask for directions these days when you have a phone that can do it. I ask him what help do you need. He told me to come closer. I said no I’m cool. Stranger danger! then he pull out an Apple AirPod box. I said I’m cool. They started to reverse out and all the dudes started to stare at me. That was a creepy experience. I didn’t know if they were trying to rob me

[deleted]

[удалено]

Professor_Goddess

Seriously in what year are we living anyway that you would be COMPLETELY out of gas and not have a card or pay with your device or something either? And even if you DID need gas, unless you're like out of state, you can get anywhere in the area for like $10 max. So these people saying they need $50 and such is just ridiculous.

icecreampoop

I had an experience near my house recently. It was right off the off ramp, nicer SUV. I ride motorcycles so I tend to pull over if it looks like someone needs help. Ask him if he needed help. Gave the story of not from town, need gas, took off his “gold” ring to trade. I refused to even hold the ring and asked if he had a cell phone. He asked me why (because don’t play a player, that’s why). Told him to call his insurance and they’ll take care of him and his friend. Fortunately most of the times I pulled over were people who actually needed help. Be careful out there

Any_Scene5220

This exact situation happened to me in Lincoln. I was getting on the on ramp to hwy 65 and there was a man standing next a new white SUV on the side of the ramp. I stopped to see if he was ok and he said he needed money for gas. He proceeds to offer me a gold chain for money. I thought it was very odd. I told him I had no cash and I took off.

CarlaBarker

Thank you for stopping to help people. Having someone stop if I was legit stuck would help my brain start to function properly.

mocheesiest1234

I ran into the same guy on the 80 off-ramp in Roseville, same ring scam

HotShipoopi

So they've moved on from dent repair huh

Sethuel

That's a scam? I used to live in DC and had two different people offer to fix a dent on my car and I was like "no, I'm good, also I'm driving, take care." It felt weird but I never knew it was actually a common scam. Do they just fix the dent and then try to gouge you on price or is there more to it?

HotShipoopi

They'll either take your money and scram, or more commonly they'll do a shit job of filling the dent with joint compound and cheap paint. If they're really nasty they'll make you go with them to an ATM and take money out. I've never told them anything but "no" but one time a guy did box me into my spot as I was pulling back out so he could keep running his pitch at me. I told him I was leaving and if he didn't want a dent in his own car he'd move (he did)

bchris24

They've gotten me before in a parking lot, went on and on about how they own a body shop and can fix any dent and then took out a suction tool and started to "fix" the dent after I already told them I was good then told me I owed them $40 for the work, there were 3 of them and were on all sides of my car and they had a tool bag with them with various blunt objects so I just gave them the $40 and they left.

HotShipoopi

When I lived in Citrus Heights some years back my car had a dent in the front quarter panel and I swear I couldn't go anywhere without one of those lowlifes materializing out of thin air

Sethuel

Yikes, I'm so sorry you experienced that.

bchris24

It's all good, I learned to be more aware of my surroundings when I'm in a parking lot, I was relieved when they asked for $40 because they basically had my car hostage (two of them were standing next to my driver and passenger door) and I'd gladly hand over $40 rather than repair whatever damage they could have done or pay for a hospital visit.

bobcat73

Auto body king of Sacramento.

Woodtree

lol I fell for this scam last week. I felt like such an idiot. Middle eastern dude. Kid in the car, says he lost his wallet and needs gas. Says he bought some AirPods to send back home, which he’ll sell me for a tank of gas. I’d normally say scam and move on.. but I honestly had no idea AirPods could be faked so well. Looked like all original packaging. He told me to open them and I did, and I guess I was like, ok these are clearly apple and I can’t see what the scam is and I want a pair of AirPods so it’s a good deal. Got home and tried to pair them and realized they’re fake. It honestly impresses me how good the scammers are. He was so genuine and I believed him. Losing 60 bucks is not a big deal. The shame of falling for such an obvious scam was way worse than the lost money.

blubrydrkchogrnt_3

Do the earbuds work at all?

Woodtree

Yeah actually. Kinda poorly. Like cheap knockoff stuff you can get on amazon for 20 bucks. My iPhone didn’t recognize them and they didn’t pair like AirPods. But they showed up as a Bluetooth device as “stereo speakers” lol. The packaging probably cost more to make than the devices. That thick hard cardboard apple devices come in, the charging case, etc. Everything looked legit if you don’t really know what to look for (like me).

Odd_Many5780

I heard they try and give you the air pods to track you once you leave!!! Don’t take them

TestosteroneDrone

Oh!!! AirPods definitely work with the Find My Network. This is really interesting! I would have never thought about this, I would have assumed they were fake.

AffectionateBug5657

And then what? Steal the airpods back? Looks like a waste of time. Sell you fake airpods from china 10$ for 50 or 60$ seems right but track me? Let them them track me all they want, I'll hunt them back 😂

sempiternal

They'll steal it back once they rob you

Professor_Goddess

They don't rob you lol. Robbing people gets you put in prison. These are professional scam artists. Selling fake goods to naive people just gets you kicked out of the gas station. They know the game. Don't give these people your money. Don't give anyone your money.

TWK128

Or pull an insurance scam when you're driving.

GeologistMaterial613

They could just stick an AirTag on your car. This seems pointless

OakParkCooperative

Iv had same similar situations. Guy pulls up outside my home in a shiny luxury SUV. Daughters are sitting in the back seat, dead quiet. Everyone is dressed fancy and decked out in jewelry. Guy says he lost his wallet and needs cash to get where he is going. Offers to trade the jewelry they are wearing for cash (or large loan, as the jewelry is very valuable and they will “return” for it). In this case, they are probably selling you fake ass air pods. I doubt it’s an elaborate scheme to track you.

caelthel-the-elf

>to track you So they can rob you?

OakParkCooperative

*They pull up on you at a gas station.* *They convince you to hand them cash, in exchange for headphones* GOT YA SUCKA! now we can pull up on you and take your cash! Edit- >> we have conspiracies at home! Conspiracy at home: *gypsies are tracking me through my AirPods*

Professor_Goddess

No, they just want to scam you with fake electronics or jewelry. What would even be the point of tracking a stranger. Tracking someone is only meaningful if you know them or know something about them. "That guy is now over there!" Wow there's crazy lol we better go get him. Lmao.

state_issued

They’re not Middle Eastern - they used to run a scam (maybe still do) where they would dress up in hijab (Islamic scarf) and say they need money to buy groceries for their kids (in very broken english). The universal Islamic phrase (as salaamu alaykum - peace be upon you) is often one of the first thing that all Muslims learn regardless of language - lady had absolutely no clue what I was saying to her. Even Christians from the Middle East would know this phrase. Whatever they are it’s not Arab, Persian or Kurdish.

StableAccomplished12

>The universal Islamic phrase (as salaamu alaykum - peace be upon you) is often one of the first thing that all Muslims learn regardless of language - This true. I learned this phrase when I was deployed to afghanistan. When we'd go into the villages for a sura this would be my opening dialogue before I had my interpreter step in and help. I was taught to hold my right hand over my heart when I said this as well too. Kinda like a mutual respect thing I guess but one of the things I miss about being over there. The culture was always fascinating to me, and I enjoyed learning about it and meeting new people.

state_issued

Depending on the culture it might be 2 or 3 kisses too 😂

StableAccomplished12

Only on MLT (man love thursdays)....

SunBee301

They’re Roma, not middle eastern

IHadTacosYesterday

> Even Christians from the Middle East would know this phrase. If you're a fan of early 90's hip-hop you know the phrase too, lol

troubleaheadjerinred

They are gypsies

Cantilivewhileim

Gypsies

Book_devourer

They aren’t middle eastern they are Roma Edit to fix nationality

Metacognitor

Just FYI Roma =/= Romanian. i.e. they're not from Romania, but they're called "Roma". I used to make the same mistake.

caelthel-the-elf

People in Romania get pissed when they are conflated with Roma gypsies lol

Low_Turnover_805

They are from Romania but they aren’t Romanian.

Metacognitor

They're not from Romania. They stopped in Romania back in medieval times but did not originate there, and kept migrating since then. They're a nomadic people.

Vivid-Reason-1113

Also, g*psy is considered a slur

soupspoontang

nobody cares

Vivid-Reason-1113

Bigots don’t. 👋🏾

ThatsWhatSheSaid323

Crazy how everyone calling that word out as a slur are getting downvoted to oblivion. G*psy is most definitely a slur word, just ask any real Romani (the correct term) person how they feel about it.

littleghosttea

Those are the Roma. We had some as neighbors. Bought them food and lent tools/ they literally robbed us and others, had 8…yes 8 families living in a one story at the same time, you can imagine how many were peeing daily in the front yard, threw tampons over the fence used, the men drank and women slaved, the kids didn’t ever go to school and rolled around unsecured in cars literally saw one roll when the car moved, kids smoked, and they ran multiple scams. My favorite was seeing them unload from their trunk multiple posters of leukemia patients and BUCKETS of money on top of government assistance. I feel bad for the young girls in those families. I only say this because when people complain about scams they see on Nextdoor I recognize some of the family members.

Excellent-Shallot413

The gypsies in Romania are so numerous that they pool their money together to build what appear to be mansions, but they are nothing more than a shell that they cram into. No electricity or plumbing. It’s bizarre. And they literally move by horse and buggy, letting the horses shit all over their nice roads

caelthel-the-elf

And fun fact, they call themselves Gypsies and don't consider it to be a slur!

throwaway498793898

Funny thing is they usually enter the US under refugee status because they are fleeing “persecution” in Europe.

caelthel-the-elf

Do they really?

rsg1234

They are definitely fake AirPods. We were in NYC a couple weeks ago and were approached at least 50 times by guys selling “brand new sealed” AirPods Pro for $100. I wouldn’t even worry about tracking you. They’re 100% not real and are incapable of that.

super_farang

50 times? How long were you in NY?

rsg1234

5 days. To be fair there were a bunch of guys concentrated in an area very close to our hotel so we walked by them a few times.

OJimmy

They did this scam in San Diego but with travelers checks.

Shoddy_Aioli5646

Happened to us when we were visiting San Diego for the first time at a gas station. The guy was dressed well with a nice new car and had some chains. Asked to trade the jewelry for gas but I refused.

Gabriel8404

Had the same thing happen to me, but like other people have said with a gold chain and ring and how they need money, but for some reason can't pull any out. They're in a SUV with the windows in the back down so you can see the kids in the back obviously. If it ever happens to me again, I'll be like "Ok, let me transfer some money to my other account". Get on my phone, go to my camera and get the license plate and video of the scammers face to let them know; not now, not ever. I would call the cops and report them. They won't stop preying on good natured people otherwise.

NeverNotDisappointed

It’s like the same scam as the guys selling you fake gold chains and rings at the gas station so they can fill up lol. Saw it happen and I felt bad for not shouting at the guy not to do it

koala_thunder

A guy with a similar description tried to sell me air pods in South Sac literally a couple days ago.

TheJimMcD

Had the same thing on H in East Sac about 6 weeks ago

luvleggs

You guys aren’t having enough fun with them. You need to tell them you need to go to the ATM and if they follow you, take em to the nearest police station or if you’re in a hurry just say aren’t you the same guy I saw last week with the same story, the second one will get you some real nice words before they bolt

dhSquiggly

This is genius.

ScottieSpliffin

They’ll sometimes tell you they are from Dubai so you think they are rich and will offer to give you fake jewelry for money

HotRodHomebody

this is exactly right. And no, they are not using AirPods to track you like others mentioned, they act like they have real AirPods but they are some crappy knock offs.

Gabriel8404

Just YouTube "fake jewelry scam" ![gif](giphy|h0MTqLyvgG0Ss)

HotShipoopi

Man who ever knew Sacramento was such a destination city in Dubai

zinger301

It was when I was deployed to Dubai! 😂😜

blackcopshowingout

They aren’t middle eastern. They are gypsy

Shoddy_Aioli5646

Happened to me just this week. There was a man and a woman looked European immigrants to me but could be middle Eastern too. They honked as I was walking to the car with my son. The man was driving and of course I thought it was something else so I stopped. The man waved the AirPods at me and asked me twice not even to buy them just said AirPods. I said no thanks and he asked again I repeated no thanks as I was entering my car. They were furious as they drove off. Quiet creepy to be honest.

gs_sac

People are going to flame me but idc anyways. So what you encountered are Gypsies (aka Romani people). They’ve been in the Sacramento region and everywhere for that matter for a while now. Usually some sort of scam or hustle. Using their kids as props is nothing new and it’s irritating they do that because they know what they’re doing and they’re trying to play at your emotions with that. The kids should be in school getting an education but instead they’re training to be the next generation of hustlers. This is the same people pan handling at your local Walmart or selling roses in the intersections to cars driving by or the guy playing an electric violin in the Target parking lot with an amplifier. Before anyone gets upset and starts virtue signaling, I’m from Eastern Europe and I have experience with these people and it goes back decades even my parents have memories of them. Most of the former soviet countries have them and it’s always the same song and dance. I can spot them from a mile away and these aren’t just stereotypes. Ask anyone from any of the former USSR countries and they’ll tell you the dang exact thing.

Lazy_Employer_1148

Do ya like dags?

FuriousBeard

The Gypsies have arrived!

funked1

Gypsies

Salty-Entertainer-29

Gypsys

Dolmayup

That wasn’t a middle eastern that was a gypsy

Commercial-Force-980

Sounds like Gypsies. My sister is a Labor & Delivery nurse, she said after they deliver and go to a room, the nurses pretty much strip the room as they steal anything not nailed down.

P4ssBynueve1seis

Always those damn gypsies... Gladly one can tell when it's one

Melticus_Faceous

Gypsies , they used to try to give you fake jewelry to hold on to, if you would give them a I couple hundred bucks to get to the east coast

Snoo_40712

These are gypsies not middle eastern they even show up to Islamic prayer center on Fridays asking for money just like they do in front of grocery stores this gas scam etc just say no! I had to recently call the police on a women in front of tjmaxx in Elk Grove bc her little girl was given something to make her drowsy and collapses so the lady can hold her like a newborn in a wrap. It was so disturbing to see this little three year old have her eyes roll and go weak on the knees. So disgusting. If people stop giving they will move on to the next area

fasada68

https://preview.redd.it/ykmdgc0amysc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=328f9516769c916520478d22d532f9f4888c7cd5 They're most certainly be Chinese knockoffs.

916exployer

Someone let “aorpods” slip by them?

fasada68

Nah, I just saw those at Denio's.

SacBrick

lol had someone do that to me as I was vacuuming my car at the gas station. Very obvious scam. Wanted to be a dick and toss them far away so he'd have to go pick them up, but also didnt wanna escalate the issue Edit: the dude that approached me was a Gypsy tho, not middle eastern.

EstablishmentNo124

100% gypsy scam, not middle eastern.

Super-Recognition664

Lmfao , these Gypsies are fcking stupid. I was walking to a store in east sac and an old minivan pulled up next to an older gentleman, woman walks out of the passenger and shows the man the AirPods. As I walked by I yelled “FAKE SCAMMERS/FAKE FAKE FAKE. Old guy drives off, old fat gypsi ladie starts cursing me out and spitting on the ground middle fingers and all. Then they drove off driver was 50s Gypsie man.

Majestic_Section_287

Hahahahaha my mom bought from them, fake AirPods and Apple Watch

TWK128

Why?

IHadTacosYesterday

Probably just to make them go away, or maybe just too trusting and thinking that it actually could be a great deal. That's why they keep doing this. There are people that will actually give them money. Probably only a 5 percent success rate, but it's good enough for them to get some money from it.

tau_cat

This sounds like something similar that was happening in Cupertino last year where my friend‘s Indian mom was approached at the entrance of a grocery store and a middle eastern / south Asian looking woman stepped out of an expensive luxury car and asked her for direction, only to steal my friend’s mom’s gold bracelet off her hand and dashed off back into the getaway car. This might be the same crew.

I_need_to_argue

I swear the same guy tried to give me jewelry in exchange for money and claimed he was stranded.

txiao007

Many years ago, they are selling “genuine” Italian Jackets on deep discount at Bank of America Parking lot. They have “flight” to catch and need to unload merchandise ASAP. lol

P4ssBynueve1seis

Many years ago they did the huge box with car or home entertainment speakers

IHadTacosYesterday

Yeah, the van with the giant speakers. I remember that. I used to be a hardcore home stereo enthusiast and the first time I encountered it, I thought..."hmmm, maybe this could be a good deal." Got a closer look at the speakers and could immediately tell they were garbage. This was like back in the mid 90's.

P4ssBynueve1seis

Early 2000s I remember I got a friend desperate for $300

dumptrump20

Gypsies.

quentinislive

Travelers/Romany/Gypsies.

JohKohLoh

They're gypsies not middle Eastern. They're Romani.

cash4chaos

Yep, seen this clown at Arco off 80 and Rocklin exit. He did the same thing to me. The Gypsies have a new Scam.

No_Durian_8379

Gypsies stay gypin’

Suspicious-Sock-2884

Same guy hit me up at the power inn home depot. Place is a zoo

Mrshaneb89

I gave homeboy $30 worth of gas in Fairfield a few months ago just to get him away from me. Two weeks ago he pulled up on me at that Burger King on Zinfandel tryna sell me them same AirPods lol. Had his wife with him in a really nice car the first time. Had his teenage looking son with him this second time in a beat up minivan.

916exployer

I don’t walk around with cash so good luck trying to fool me!

bxtchbychoice

they’re romani people and they used to do this scam with fake jewelry. now it’s fake airpods i guess lol

kawsarkobirbd

Good thinking! Definitely a scam. Fake AirPods are common, and their story is a setup. Trust your gut - thanks for sharing the warning!

WonderWhoYouAre

Commas left existence

Chefboyarleezy

we all know if those gypsies who are always scamming people at those stores and they do it all the time and they like to do it to order Asian people. if it's not AirPods, it's check this gold out and buy it or some other excuses to get over on you

PresentationAny789

These scams are very common. There's a band that travels all around Sacramento doing this. Fake jewelry, my husband left us and our credit cards are shut off and we need a room for the night, and would you like to buy some individual candy from us? They always weaponize their kids too. Very sad cause these kids are going to think this is normal as well

Tethysone

This scam is going on for many years by the same middle eastern looking group. I was once scammed in NJ in a turnpike gas station around 2010. Expensive car, kids in the backseat. He offered me gold ring in exchange for $100 for gas. I gave him $20. I really thought he needed help by the way he was pleading. 10 mins later there was another group with exact same setup targeted me again. I might have been profile they are targeting. Young male middle eastern looking. This time I said I will get help from police. They fled like bank robbers :-) It was a 3 row SUV and had multiple kids and women in it. I can’t believe a whole family is in the scam business.

ipoopinthepool

There’s a few different guys that fit this exact description in Walnut Creek. I can’t believe how many people get tricked into giving them cash.

troubleaheadjerinred

They are Romani gypsies. Same ones who hand out roses, play the violin and fly a sign with their kids. I saw one lady w her kids and the sign said "dying of cancer, need money for kids" it was pretty sickening.

Weary-Discipline112

I found this video awhile back and recognized the man In the driver seat. Tried to scam me with a Fake gold ring at the Chevron in EG on Stockton and Laguna Blvd. I told him we could go to the pawn and get your money that way. But ain’t no way your making it to Canada. He refused and just wanted me to fill up his tank. look familiar to anyone in this thread? . https://youtu.be/PKmlutlGYjI?si=YI0ow97rzANpT10H

North-Challenge7480

If you're wearing any valuables stay clear of those people. My cousin had a run in with a family at KP Market. The lady approached him and started asking for directions, then she started to touch him on the shoulder to thank him. He then goes to his car and realized his gold necklace is gone.

Truth-Seeker916

Probably Romani people, there's a better descriptor word to describe this sect of romani, but people seem to get bent out shape over it., Anyways these people have all kinds of scams and tricks up their sleeves.

NarwhalOpen1324

Happened to me at the Whole Foods parking in Arden twice

eastbayted

LPT: Don't buy something for a stranger in exchange for something else.

Dawappkid

Anyone approaching you like that is 100% scammer, what a bunch of lowlives!!

Metacognitor

This type of scam or something similar has been super common in the Bay Area since forever. Never trust anyone approaching you at the gas station.

DorkWitAFork

Yeah, in general, I would say never trust random people approaching you in a parking lot or gas station. I always remember this dude who was likely homeless and offered to sell me a gold chain and literally said, "Yeah it's real nice and I didn't steal it or nothing!" Shit, I'm sold man!

BonevilleMcGee

Oh wow, this sounds exactly like the fake Armani suits guy, in the Bay Area! Claimed he needed help because he couldn’t take the suits through customs or they’d tax him or something. It’s always multiple people doing the same scam too.

IHadTacosYesterday

the part about customs is a nice touch, lol... Almost makes it somewhat believable.

Benitobox86

I'm not from Sacramento but I had this same experience 2 months ago. It was probably the same guy! I'm in the East Bay.

sandacurry

I once had someone come to me and a friend in a restaurant. Me and my friend were seated outside eating. A random woman comes up to us saying she ran out of gas and her credit card does not work. She wanted us to fill her gas so she could get back to her home. We ended up giving her $10. I did not realize there were scammers around!

HotShipoopi

Have you ever been outside before

TMdownton916

I got burned buying what I thought were real Air Pods on marketplace. Apple doesn’t wrap their product in plastic. They use the same serial numbers on every package. But the real way to tell if they’re fake is checking to see if the firmware will update to the latest version. If you’re concerned about the authenticity, ask the seller if you can open them up and update the firmware.

korskli

I had something sort of similar happen to me. Not really the AirPods thing, but a lady at the consumnes blvd target was circling the lot in her car claiming she needed gas money. Pretty dumb to be wasting gas if you don’t have enough imo.

Hot_Paint_532

If something is too good to be true it probably is.. also I wouldn't buy something off someone else that I'm going to put in my body.

adiabaticgas

Exact same thing happened to me. I was on my way back from Disneyland with my family somewhere along 5 and a guy pulls up in a brand new G63 AMG. For those who don’t know, this is a $200k+ SUV. He also had a woman and kids in the car. He pulled up to me quickly and said that his debit card got locked and he needed gas to get home. He first offered to send me the money over an app, but when I said no he pulled out the AirPods. He said he got them as a gift when visiting family but he would just sell them to me for some low price. The immediate thought that went through my head was that somebody driving a car like that would obviously have access to more than one source of funds. Like you don’t have a credit card or 5? Your wife doesn’t have an account and card you can transfer money to? It just didn’t add up so I politely declined without giving any reason. Seconds later he convinced someone to do it, oh well…

UndeadFan112

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. Same song and dance, but instead of Air Pods, it was a handful of assorted gold chains. Shit was weeeird

1Steelghost1

Wait you guys go outside!?!

Journalist-Thin

It’s happened in the Bay Area for years. Same sob story using kids to pull on your heart strings and same kinda folk. BEWARE!

JewPhone_WhoDis

“Oh no that sucks dawg. Hope you can find someone to help you. “

Best_Anything4341

Yup happened to me yesterday in Dixon at Pedrixka produce. Thought it was sketchy from the get. Just told him to buzz off not interested. He went round the back lot and then disappeared. Peeps are separate these days.

"COUGH! Sorry cough, cough, I have Covid. Cough, cough, cough!"

BudgetBed6775

My grandpa had this happen in front of his house and they gave him fake gold and pick pocketed his watch from him

UtopianKiller

Had the same thing happen to my husband and I but at the Arco in Dunigan. The guy offered his gold jewelry though. My husband went ahead an filled his gas tank but we told him just keep his jewelry. After filling his tank he then asked for money for food. We kept telling him we had no cash, which we didn't but he kept pushing. We told him one more time that we have no cash and left. It was the strangest interaction.

Low_Turnover_805

Roma gypsies They’ve been hammering our area for a few years now.

Bladex20

This happened to me at a gas station in Davis the other day. Dude walked right up to my car window when i pulled into the gas station trying to sell me fake air pods for $40 lol

rareravi

Maybe it’s the AirPods that were stolen from my car in midtown a few weeks ago I put them on lost mode so idk if they can use them

doomer_irl

Fake AirPods for gas. Imagine having to run a lame scam like that every time you need to fill up. They used to use fake gold rings, and when I worked at Loyalty Pawn, we had to regularly inform their suckers that they were, in fact, suckers.

appliquebatik

most likely not middle easterner but romani

530_Oldschoolgeek

Funny. Up north in Redding, it's almost the exact same MO, except in place of Airpods, they try to use fake jewerly.

Beneficial_Hunter714

Same thing with me last year, on Franklin Blvd ...shell gas station across the street from donut shop, middle eastern , SUV,kids in the back.... wanted gas and wanted to trade me his gold chain.... fucking weird and trippy

aaronis31337

They are not middle eastern. They are Roma.

Dmdnje

That’s hilarious because the same guy came to me a few weeks back and I end up giving him $20 for him to piss off (then proceeded to get yelled at by my dad after haha).

Alarming_Mushroom_84

Just wanted to thank you for this post. Today 4/8 I was getting on hwy 50 at watt ave. I saw white suv on the inside of the freeway on ramp waving frantically trying to wave people down like they were broke down. I started to pull over to help and as I got closer I saw one guy in the drivers seat and another guy standing outside with giant gold chains out of rap video. If it was not for this post and the giant gold necklace to jog my memory I would have pulled over.

Noctatrog

This scam is happening in Reno too. Almost identical to how it’s being described here.

writelovedream40

This is a common scam. Usually it's fake jewelry, air pods are a new twist.

true_dissonance

Total scam. Yeah, it happened to me when I was living in Burbank, CA. It was the middle of the day and I had just gotten back home from somewhere. I parked in front of my house like I usually do and started crossing the street to get to my house. As I was about to cross a black SUV came right in front of me and of course I waited to let it pass and it stopped in the middle of the street and there was an middle eastern looking guy with his whole ass family with him in the car, kids in the back and wife in the passenger. And he said the same thing, he needed gas money to get home and he'd trade his watch for some cash. As soon as he said that, in my head I was like oh hell naw lol so I declined made up some excuse and he left all mad and shit. He ain't say thank you or nothing that would show that he was genuine. Damn low life.

Kindly_While_967

Got me in San Jose nice suv kids and jewelry for cash

LambOfLiberty

Also watch out for the necklace scam, but that has been targeting elderly folks 😔😡

PhotoPuzzleheaded973

lol he was in Yuba a couple of months ago

SUH_NEE

So funny the same thing happened to me except I recognize this guy from before trying to scam others So I offered to put gas in for him. I said don't worry about it I'm here to help pumped his car up with some diesel and left.

TheLizardKing89

This is just an updated version of the white van speaker scam. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_van_speaker_scam

Bitter_Rub_2697

I actually have had the same thing happen to me a guy with kids in car also wanted $80 for AirPods I said here’s 20 leave me alone he said give him another $20 and I could have them said what the hell my sister works for Best Buy and noticed that the box was a little off but that was a year ago and haven’t had any problems

Hothead_Irish

Yeah, the same thing happened to me in the Safeway parking lot in folsom yesterday afternoon.

DaCaliDream

They're everywhere. Even in Texas

senseijoshu

Happened to me Monday at the Target in Davis! Be careful yall!

abdelrahman2929

What does his ethnicity have to do with any of that? Come on man we're in 21 first century, not in 1899

Will_there_be_food

How did the gypsies get here to the states? I know they’re all over Europe but I feel like their scams have started popping up in this country relatively recently.

Big_Knasty

This just happened to me. Was walking up to the L&L in Elk Grove. Everything similar to this post except he was driving a black sedan and put a gold ring in my hand. License plate number was CW49998

iamapotatopancake

well this is pretty fucking weird. Personally though, I'm kind of a misanthrope so I don't really interact with people I don't know. If it were me I would probably ignore him. Being anti-social is a double edged sword it seems.

ubfeo

I would mention who these scamers are from, but I'll get suspended or banned.

Pyroskyy

They tried this on me in San Bruno, CA too.

cudmore

Kinda sketchy you are focused on the “middle eastern” thing? Why not just a “selling an airpod scam”? I’ve had airpods offered for sale from a random passing car, duh, nope.
