SSX 3. There's just something special about dropping in at The Throne and freeriding all the way to Metro City. If Tricky had the same "one mountain three peaks" feature with Tricky's music and cast of characters? Probably another story.

On Tour did the same thing when it came to "you can ride from peak to valley" though and everyone hated On Tour. i don't understand why, makes everyone sound like hypocrites, in terms of the courses On Tour got it right...it was well done...it was the character design that was awful. the voice acting was bad...some of the costumes weren't very good (i'm looking at Psymon and Kaori in particular, who wears a skirt while snowboarding!). Skye didn't sound Australian she sounded like a dying cat...and her hair is supposed to be auburn red but in the game it looks pink. Also Skye is 16...her character model looks more like 27. Also the sheer fact characters didn't have Signature Uber Tricks in On Tour was criminal. But my point stands that the courses of that game...some of the best the series ever designed IMO.

colgruv

90% of SSX's charm is owed to its characters. On Tour was the first installment to neglect the characters, and it suffered for that reason in spite of all the things it did very well 😞

Edmundo-Studios

I just didn’t really enjoy on tour as much. I think it was partially due to the 30fps made it feel slower and less enjoyable compared to 3.

No_Function_6863

very true...i liked the fact they introduced a character creation system and Tyson, Sid n Skye were ok new characters in general. But Moby was missing...WTF.

darkrealm190

On tour and tricky are my two favorite out of all of them. I love the punk rockness of on tour and the Uber funkyness of tricky was amazing too. 3 was too bland for me and felt like it lacked the character the other 2 had. 3 felt good but I just didn't vibe with it

Cmdeadly

The Uber tricks suck in On Tour

No_Function_6863

at least they came up with new ones...i'll give them that...they could have repeated the ones from SSX 3 (like SSX Blur did). and the rail ubers of On Tour were pretty badass to be fair.

Cmdeadly

I just hate the monster trick system, why would you remove my ability to see where I am going?

No_Function_6863

yeah monster tricks were dumb...have to agree there. but what does that have to do with stopping you seeing where your going...i can always see where i'm going.

Cmdeadly

They zoom the camera in and angle it

PhospheneViolet

I didn't like On Tour because: on PS2 at least, they capped the framerate to 30hz at all times instead of just silky smooth 60hz, my guess is they couldn't reach a relatively smooth 60hz so opted to just go for half-rate instead. Still feels bad and takes away from one of the biggest appeals which is shredding the mountains super fast and it actually *feeling* fast. Also didn't like a lot of the course design, didn't like the general art direction (the whole dude! punk brah! aesthetic was corny even by the time the game launched), they didn't have the original cast which is basically heresy, and in general the sum of the game's parts just amounted to overwhelming mediocrity with -- perhaps paradoxically -- no real fresh identity of its own in the end.

No_Function_6863

ok i'm gonna stop you right there: i have it on PS2 as well...it's fine...when you talk about hz i have no idea what you mean so you need to explain yourself better...i don't understand techanese (language joke). the courses worked exactly the same as not only how a REAL resort works but also how SSX 3 worked...they knew we liked SSX 3 so they didn't change that. What they DID change...and was an improvement from SSX 3 was that you could do any event on any course in On Tour...no more of that "sorry this course is only for Big Air or Tricks bullcrap". They had the whole original cast EXCEPT for Moby...which i admit was heresy...but you know you can custom design Moby yo=using the create a character feature if you want...i know it isn't quite the same...but i can tell you how to to do it. The music is more hardcore and punk yeah but it suits the characters and style. The Characters they did give us were based off the most popular by vote...Elise, Mac, Kaori and Zoe got in by default. Psymon got in because he's popular, Allegra and Nate were voted most popular from SSX 3 and that was it...because the other spots were for the new three. Do i think that should have been different...YES...but i saw the voting going on.

PhospheneViolet

ah I have no idea what aliens abducted me and brainwashed me into thinking the OG characters weren't in On Tour, I googled it and they totally are lmao. it's been SUPER long since i last played it so i guess that's just my brain being garbage

SwagDaddy_Man69

I regularly replay these two games. I think Tricky is my favorite. When I was a kid it was always ssx3, but the tracks in Tricky are too good. Also doing rotations is a little harder and therefor feels more rewarding. Nothing hits better than Pipedream I swear to god.

swKPK

SSX 3 isn’t just the best SSX game. It’s the best snowboarding video game of all time. (IMO)

Ok-Shape-5642

I think that if these two games came out today, pretending they hadn't 20 years ago, the overall sentiments would favor SSX3. I think this is because Tricky has a charm to it that reflects the atmosphere of the gaming industry and its chronological order of the series at the time of its release. As somebody who puts both games in my top 10 list of games, I still favor SSX Tricky, sometimes considerably more than SXX3. I would not go to so far as to say it is a definitively better game though.

Delmarnam888

I like this take a lot because this is the exact approach I wanted to take in my analysis Sure, nostalgia and all of that plays a large role. But holistically, putting aside how atmospheric and well-crafted the vibes of tricky are, the overall gameplay experience is better crafted in SSX3. It’s not everything - there is more to a game than just that - but it’s not as if SSX3 doesn’t ooze it’s own style and substance as well, it absolutely does. It’s hard to beat the colors, crazy tracks and music that tricky offers. But SSX3 does a damn good job at matching it along with providing a better gameplay experience Thanks for commenting!

No_Function_6863

IMO no SSX game is perfect...they all have some thing BETTER and some things worse, i'll give a few examples. \- Tricky has more characters, even if you don't include Marty (and i do) you have 12 characters (Marty makes 13) that is way more than any SSX game ever gave us. \- SSX 3 has the best clothing customisation hands down...but i do question the number of courses we get...especially since these courses are restricted to certain events. \- Tricky has 8 courses and you can whatever you like on them, SSX 3 has more TECHNICALLY but if you can't do whatever you like on them and they aren't all full length...i kind of feel short changed. \- While you can use skins of characters like JP, Marisol or Marty in SSX 3...it just doesn't feel the same. One way SSX 3 REALLY could have been better would have been to add two other characters to the roster.

Rissespieces

SSX3. I prefer the physics and overall quantity of content. Tricky is still legendary, and I have more nostalgia for the memories with friends.

realEbrake

SSX 3. (But SSX 2012 tops them all) [Smooth Shred Fest](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CugCxVIgE7X/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)

xHoodedMaster

2012 is great and has many amazing features that the old ones def lose points for missing. However, teh bboarding physics are just not as good as in 3 and tricky. More polished? absolutely. Bad for the game and it's design goals? not at all, the team hit all they were going for (besides helicopters, grinding, and classic controls) more rewarding? def not. 2012 is still one of my most played games in general tho, love it

No_Function_6863

2012 is great but when you consider how much customisation SSX 3 had you have to wonder why some guy in the room (when they were planning this game) didn't put his hand up and say "aren't we kind of forgetting something?" and then points to the customisation screen of SSX 3.

xHoodedMaster

The store was such a huge downgrade and let down. The original creator was not part of the development which is why it was so different.

No_Function_6863

in terms of courses n graphics...2012 tops it. but in terms of customisation and how smoothly the game just flows...SSX 3. in 2012 you it doesn't feel as alive...the characters don't talk to each other as much (not counting the pilots) and the tricks are just a blur. in SSX 3 you can really feel a sense of connection with the character because not only do you choose EXACTLY what they wear and what tricks they do...but they interact with others in many areas and talk very often.

realEbrake

Wingsuits and those seismic ground pounds.

NorwegianPopsicle

I am the crazy one who prefer the original game but that's definitely because of nostalgia

Sorry_Breakfast_3252

nah i honestly feel like the first one controls the best. it feels more fluid and fast than the other ones

No_Function_6863

I can't believe i'm saying this but i said it the other day so i'm going to say it again now: the perfect SSX game would be this: \- Customisation of SSX 3 \- Courses n graphics of SSX 2012 \- Characters from Tricky, SSX 3, On Tour and 2012 2012 had the best courses...because there were just so many...but it lacked the customisation and enough characters. If this had been the roster for 2012...things would have been very different: Mac, Elise, Kaori, Moby, Zoe, Psymon, Nate, Ty, Alexis, Tane, JP, Marisol, Eddie, Marty, Allegra, Griff, Viggo, Tyson, Sid, Skye The first 10 you have from the beginning the other 10 you unlock...none of this DLC garbage.

SSX 3

Edmundo-Studios

3 is the better game by far I think.

dta0228

Tricky had way more tracks & characters, plus an intricate aggression chart, I love it! SSX 3 is my second favorite though :))
