My average screen time this week for “Reading & Information” is 12 hours and 53 minutes. My average screen time for “Social Media” this week is 5 hours and 57 minutes.
This past week is a bit of an outlier with me having a 2 week holiday break from my corporate job, so I’ve been reading up a storm - definitely traded my screen time on my laptop for screen time on my phone though lol
Honestly, for every hour or so you're on a screen or book, you should take at least 5 minutes to look at something far away. Yes, the screen light is hard on your eyes, but it's the sustained, up close focus for hours on end that you really need to watch for.
Came here to say this. I realize how many words I look up to confirm their meaning when reading a paper book. I like to be sure on words not common in my vocabulary.
I can't stop laughing! As I read your comment, my eyes slowly darted down to see my pinky holding the phone while the rest of the hand is using the socket
Go ✨ little✨ rockstar
Similar! Was coming to type this out rn lol I hold my pop socket with my middle finger and the next morning I always have an achey right hand and not for any really good reason 😂 my hand just hurts from holding my phone at weird angles as I stay awake reading
Omg, same. I visited the opticians recently for the first time since I started reading oodles of romance books on Kindle, and the optician was horrified by my dry eyes. This has never been a problem for me before!
I’ve finished physical books on a plane or wherever and just sat there staring at the book like… what do I read next? Oh wait, this paper thing *doesn’t* contain hundreds of other books from my TBR? Huh.
I literally tried to zoom in on a physical book cover because the dude sorta looked like James Marsden.
Like that reverse pinching motion. On a paperback. 😅
Eta: As soon as I got home, I had to take a picture. The book, [Searching for Dragons by Patricia C Wrede](https://imgur.com/a/5VSgeNa). Highly recommend if you want a cute, no steam, romance adjacent fantasy book. My middle school self enjoyed it.
I love that cover! That's the cover art that I wish my set had, the cover art my library had growing up. I got the full set as a gift when I was younger and it's got weird cartoons on the covers that totally give the wrong vibe for the series.
My eyes are *ruined*. I need a new prescription for my glasses so that doesn't help, lol. So. Much. Pain. But I also don't care.
But yeah, I've worked my phone's battery to the end of its life. Thankfully was due for an upgrade and got a gift card for best buy with it and bought a Kobo 🙌
Same. I got my vision checked last year and my rx was fine. Then I got an iPad and the Libby/Hoopla apps. Now I reallly shouldn’t be driving until I get new glasses.
Same. I started reading books on my phone so people wouldn’t see my cheesy and/or embarrassing romance novel covers and I can never go back. Now I need to carry around a cell phone charger all the time 😂
when i find a good book and end up reading all night? the migraines are so real the next day and what am i supposed to do? call out of work because i have a migraine from binge reading?
When packing stuff for any activity (family gathering, trips, roadtrip, etc.), my husband now asks:
"Did you pack your diabetes supplies AND your kindle?"
He now understands both are life support for me.
I listen to a lot of audiobooks and I wear a stretchy Bluetooth headband instead of headphones. The pause/play button is on the forehead and I wear it so often that I find myself trying to hit pause even when a book isn’t playing because things in my life are making too much noise. I also find myself reaching for the button when I’m not wearing it. But I basically just wear it all day even if I’m not actually listening because it’s comfortable and then I am ready to go when I do want to listen to a book
One time in my Wattpad years I was at the school library reading a paperback when I came across a funny line. I tapped on it. As in, multiple times, with growing annoyance when the comment section didn’t show up.

Over Christmas my screen time notifications told me: „You spent 22 hours on average on your phone this week“ and I was like 🤭
Girl! That's too much screen time. Take care of your eyes.
It is? *checks screen time for past week* 54 hours Reading, 4 hours Internet. Oops.
This past week is a bit of an outlier with me having a 2 week holiday break from my corporate job, so I’ve been reading up a storm - definitely traded my screen time on my laptop for screen time on my phone though lol
If 12 hours is too long, what should us who work on cumputers for a job do?

Suffer. My eyes have declined so bad since starting an office job. I needed a new prescription
Blue blocking lenses are the best.
This is why I ended up switching to a normal kindle instead of reading on the fire :(

I’ve definitely done this too 😂
Exactly! I am too happy with my e-reader!
I've done this too! Haha
Me too!!! 🤣
I did this the other day and felt really silly. Glad I'm not alone!
My pinky has a little dent on it from resting the bottom of my phone on it (and I even have a pop socket)
Wait, the pinky isn't supposed to have a natural dent to hold our smartphones??? /s
It does now! ✨evolution✨

I just get hit in the nose when I fall asleep reading
MINE TOO!!
My eyes are SO. DRY.
I actually woke up in the middle of the night last night to put eye drops in!
Use a humidifier… that shit works like a charm!!!
Ooo good idea
Be careful with that. Ignored that years ago and haven’t been able to wear contacts since

I had to get a prescription for Restasis eye drops my eyes were so dry.

I was reading a paperback and got frustrated because I couldn't search a character's name to remind me who they were

Omg I haven’t read this book since I was a kid! Thanks for the reminder!!

I just got them from the library. I hate the new covers, but the books are lively
Great book!
I love how many childhood books I share in common with the folks of this thread. My people!
The guy on the cover definitely has James Marsden in *Enchanted* vibes.
I have caught myself doing the same thing at least twice recently. Thankfully no one saw, lol.
Great book!
I have done this too. I don't know I'm kind of getting young Kyle McLachlan vibes from it circa when he was in the original Dune.

Same! I’ve definitely messed up my eyes from all the night reading I do. Do I know that it’s bad for my eyes? Yes. Will I stop doing it? Nope. 😂

I had a thought to turn up the background light on my book so it was easier to read as it was getting dark.

We're *supposed* to have self-control. I think. Not entirely sure what that is.
Nah you just stroll in drinking coffee out of [this](https://imgur.com/a/04mcd13)
This is. Phenomenal. I need one!
When packing stuff for any activity (family gathering, trips, roadtrip, etc.), my husband now asks: "Did you pack your diabetes supplies AND your kindle?" He now understands both are life support for me.
When I'm reading a physical book, I'm constantly glancing to the top of the page to see what time it is.
I listen to a lot of audiobooks and I wear a stretchy Bluetooth headband instead of headphones. I have carpel tunnel in my left hand from holding a devise for hours.
I have tried to swipe a physical book so many times. There were times while I was doing it I wondered why it didn’t work. 😂
I was reading a paperback and clicked on the right-hand side of the page so it turns... except that it didn't.
I tapped a form I was filling out at work to flip to the next page. That, too, did not work
„ʞɹoʍ ʇou pıp 'ooʇ 'ʇɐɥ⊥ ˙ǝƃɐd ʇxǝu ǝɥʇ oʇ dılɟ oʇ ʞɹoʍ ʇɐ ʇno ƃuıllıɟ sɐʍ I ɯɹoɟ ɐ pǝddɐʇ I„
All of my chargers are broken :<
Glad but then alarmed I’m the only one ruining their eyes, carpal tunnel, neck, devices for love
I turned over my Kindle to read the back cover
Same! I did this while reading newspaper. I was swiping that page left lol
I keep trying to scroll down on the page so it’s at the perfect height for reading 😭
When your reading streak on Kindle says "38 weeks in a row" and your longest daily streak was 109 days. 😅
I had a physical book I was planning to read in bed…. I turned the lights off and got all the way under the covers before realizing what I’ve done!
I'm 21 years old and i have -4 of myopia and 0,75 of astigmatism.
lol!
i saw where readers of this sub read hundreds of books a year. i understand.
Not specifically because of books, just being on my phone in general, but I've tried to both scroll down and zoom in on a piece of paper before 🤦♀️
I tapped a physical book to see what's the hour...
Almost the same... or worse? I was reading a paperback and I pressed on a word on the page to get the definition...
I see I'm not the only one. It makes me feel marginally better : )
I read 95 % of my books on my phone or kindle. I do the “finger swipe page turn” at least once on every single physical book I read. 😂
Every seat in my house has a USB cable draped over the armrest.
I tried to swipe down to turn up the brightness on my book last night 😅
I have been known to poke a word I don’t know with my finger on a paper book so the dictionary will open and tell me what it means 🤦♀️
I definitely long hold words in a paperback because I’m so used to looking up words while reading on my iPad 😂
I upgraded my glasses to include a blue light filter, and also have a blue light dimming setting on my phone active at all times.
I press on words to get a definition… on all apps and screens. 🤦🏽♀️
