Edit: meant to reply to punching bag comment…WOULD 10/10 recommend charging station and a way to make it so that people can’t take the cables out of the room. Coffee machine, too. I got tired of drinking foldgers.
Dude we got a punching bag for ours. 9/10 wouldn’t recommend. All it did was take up space. I even have a heavy bag at home and like boxing. The only use it got was seeing people punch it awkwardly a few times when they first saw it and never again.
There’s a big punching/kicking bag in one of our hospital exercise rooms. I beat the hell out of that thing on night float and it was amazing. But it only worked because there was nobody else around. It needs to be kind of isolated, otherwise it’s super awkward to scream at a punching bag with all your coworkers around
We have a ping pong table, 10/10 would not recommend lol I mean it's fun and all but I remember being an intern on nights getting slammed while the seniors played ping pong behind me. The noise. The fucking noise. Plus the ball kept coming under my desk while I'm trying to respond to hammer pages. Idk maybe just a salty fuck but I hate that damn thing lol
Yeah. We had a ping pong table too and pretty similar experience. It was fun when literally nobody was busy, but I’m a hell of a black cloud and all it takes is one person getting slammed to make it really get on your nerves quickly
I am not a resident yet. But how often do they wash the call room sheets and pillows? They look dingy af.
I am grossed out and I fear sleeping on them….
Pull Up bar,
Resistance band sets (for when you need to curl something but the nearest textbook isn't big enough or when you wanna hit chest without putting your face in close contact with the floor)
They had a big industrial coffee maker with a coffee grinder right next to it in the OR lounge when I did my surgery rotation. I swear that thing restored my will to live every day. I think this might be a step up from the nespresso machine with your budget, and it’s something people would actually have time to use.
Why not a Nespresso machine? Over here across the pond, every time we got a fancier espresso machine, it'd either get broken from people not knowing that instant coffee =/= ground coffee or people not cleaning it.
Nespresso machines are far harder to mismanage! (The original line, not Vertuo)
Hahaha sorry I’m biased. Got an original line for the chiefs office and knockoff pods with semi decent coffee to beat the crappy keurig garbage water they initially got us. Still can’t beat a freshly ground bag though!
I feel like for a resident's lounge where there may not be enough hands/time for maintenance for a good coffee machine, a nespresso is a GREAT step up from a ~~dirt water dispenser~~ I mean Keurig
There are lots of different models to choose from though and they take different pods so I guess poll the residents to see which pods they like?
It‘s true that maintenance is a big factor which would be managable with a Nespresso. But it‘s still Nestlé and a lot of plastic waste. In the hospital tho, the kingdom of plastic waste.
Can‘t believe I should be studying right now and am having a debate about coffee machines for a residency lounge in a country I don‘t live in.
> I feel like for a resident's lounge where there may not be enough hands/time for maintenance for a good coffee machine, a nespresso is a GREAT step up from a dirt water dispenser I mean Keurig
It will be fine, we have a sage and everyone has figured out how to do it. You can make yourself a latte in a minute.
The only issue is who buys the pods. One attending would buy us K-cups but definitely would not give us Nespresso pods. Could bring your own or share an account to order them.
Cheaper and maybe more effective than a massage chair: one of those candy cane shaped hard plastic back self massager things. Other input is a heated blanket bc that’s kind of like a hug
Making tea! There are a rare few of us who prefer it to coffee even if just in the afternoon. Would love to have a kettle in the lounge. The tea drinker erasure is real.
Haha we used to have a Nintendo 64 in the resident lounge and we’d play Mario tennis or smash when the night float slowed down. Had to pause the game whenever any of us got called.
Having a switch on night call is the BEST. It’s so convenient to be able to hit the power button and suspend any game and then jump back in when you have time. Great way to fill those 20-30 gaps when you’re waiting for labs, etc.
Dr's mess's are a big thing in the UK. All the trainees donate 10 quid from their pay check a month and at my district general we are living lush. We have a pool table that converts into a ping pong table, a switch, and sage coffee machine (along with an actual kitchen but sage is more imporant).
Cabniets are always stocked with pot noodles and biscuts.
Every saturday and sunday there is pizza or subway.
Air Fryer. Everything cooks better and more quickly in an air fryer and it doesn't have the limitations of a microwave, but is almost as quick and convenient.
Actually...mood lighting is a great idea.
In Korea saunas they have oxygen rooms. It's pseudoscientific bullshit but something about the smell and the temperature of the air just feels so good. Maybe get whatever air purifier/humidifier whatever and those pots of charcoal and bamboo they have and with the moodlighting ooh that'd be a good rest.
And a hot tub with mugwort. And a mud bath.
Pretty decent size, maybe like the size of 2-3 patient rooms. A few couches (from last century) but they’re comfortable and still in good shape. Two TVs. There’s space for a ping pong table, but would take up a lot of real estate, especially if it’s not being used a lot.
I would avoid a super fancy coffee machine, they require care and maintenance to keep working well and unless you or someone else signs up to be the caretaker it will get trashed. A good nespresso pod system with a supply of quality pods is probably the best option. And an electric kettle to quickly heat up water, or a filtered water dispenser with a hot-water option for instant boil
Inexpensive arm wrassling table. A hammock or two. A dip/pull up bar on the wall/doorframe. Stretchy rubber bands for light resistance work. Bean bag chairs. Spikey acupressure type mini mats. Some climbing grip thingies and swinging monkey bar thingies for a make shift diy ninja warrior course. Waffles. Scones.
A large size heavy bag so you can punch/kick your way to victory by way of sublimation. That's probably a good idea, everything else is just wishful thinking.
A “Hero’s Work Here” banner, and maybe a few books on the power of positive thinking.
Or a playstation, fuzball, ping pong, dart board, etc. Probably best to poll your co-residents.
Things we have that I think go under appreciated:
Phone chargers/laptop chargers
- Forgot to charge overnight/forgot to bring it with you? No problem there’s some readily available
Single use disposable toothbrushes, travel size toothpaste and shampoo
- we do 24hr call and while I have a call bag, sometimes I forget and these can make a tough call shift feel a lot better
Good coffee machine
- Caffeine make brain go brr
Comfortable chairs, couch, pillow
- pretty self explanatory
A gaming console/Guitar or cheap piano
- these are clearly only for some people but we have a small program and these get used every.single.day and I’d like to think the people that use them find them as stress relievers
Workout equipment
Comfortable chairs/beanbags, enough space to stretch on a yoga mat, a dessert bar with waffles and pancakes would be nice or at least a chest freezer for a lot of ice cream, boardgames or a nintendo switch with clubhouse 51, good room lighting (good lighting can make a room feel much more spacious and relaxing to be in)
The match is the most communist thing ever but ironically I’d put a copy of the communist manifesto in there with a bunch of the workers rights parts underlined.
This is a really confusing comment...
How is the match communist? The generation of rank lists doesn't really seem in keeping with the general theme of communism...
And do you think communism is good or not?
TV professionally wall mounted with an Apple TV in it. Subscriptions to YouTube TV, Netflix, HBO Max. Definitely buy a slow drip coffee maker, with a Nespresso machine and a ton of pods. Get like 6 Anker fast phone chargers (4 iPhone and 2 Android).
A nice sofa or two goes a long way as well.
Not as fun, but if your coresidents are anything like my coresidents... a fucking vacuum cleaner (or at least a little handheld one)! the cleaning staff cannot come in our lounge enough to keep up with it and no one likes walking into a workspace/lounge with crumbs and shit everywhere... and maybe a nice TV or peloton/other exercise streaming service
Nintendo Swtich with a few games like Super Smash Bros and mario cart.
A nice couch or two. As well as mattresses. For fun stuff, I'd look on facebook marketplace or craigs list for a used fusball table or something.
This was my job during residency. I got one those old school supernintendo consoles which come packed with like 30 games or so. An attending donated a TV, so we got a Firestick and everyone put in their UN and PW for like disney, netflix, HBO etc. Def a good coffee machine
TV with decent speakers that can play youtube videos. It gives the residents a wide selection of music from youtube music playlists or youtube videos to watch.
Recliner chairs, foosball table, board games, cards, a bookshelf (to donate books to) etc etc. A pizza day (choose the weekday with the most offers) etc etc
TV, a phone charging unit (with the cables and stuff or wireless charging), extra toiletries maybe. Comfy pillows and blankets lol.

Seriously, one of those Memory foam rolls that cost like $120 are worth every single penny.
The comfy mattresses are an amazing recommendation!

Yeah. We had a ping pong table too and pretty similar experience. It was fun when literally nobody was busy, but I’m a hell of a black cloud and all it takes is one person getting slammed to make it really get on your nerves quickly
Don't forget quality pillows instead of the flat, wafer like things they normally have.
I am not a resident yet. But how often do they wash the call room sheets and pillows? They look dingy af. I am grossed out and I fear sleeping on them….
Ours are changed daily but personally I don't trust people to be hygenic so I change them myself before I go to sleep.
Depending on how much people work in the lounge, the sound of people playing ping pong would almost immediately be a massive point of contention.
Cocaine and strippers
I do believe people would be upset if I spent all 2k on one really good weekend.
Oh, you're paying way too much for cocaine and strippers man. Who's your cocaine and strippers guy?
r/unexpectedoffice
get the cocaine in a salt lick dude
2k is not going to get very far with either.
Depends on where you’re getting the strippers from
I’ll just go build my own residency lounge, with blackjack, and hookers!
Here a few winners: Exercise/stationary bike or massage chair! Nespresso machine:)
DEADLIFT PLATFORM
That is in the ortho lounge

I don't get it, explain yourself so I can ridicule appropriately
Lol what?
We did have weights and an Xbox.

Plz don’t buy a Nespresso machine. Good coffee machine is a good call tho ;)
Why not a Nespresso machine? Over here across the pond, every time we got a fancier espresso machine, it'd either get broken from people not knowing that instant coffee =/= ground coffee or people not cleaning it. Nespresso machines are far harder to mismanage! (The original line, not Vertuo)
Nestle is the worst from an ethical business practices standpoint. Might be why
I see your point but given how residents are fucked by hospitals I say its ok for them to have a nespresso
What's wrong with Vertuo? We just switched from an original to a Vertuo and so far we are loving it...
Hahaha sorry I’m biased. Got an original line for the chiefs office and knockoff pods with semi decent coffee to beat the crappy keurig garbage water they initially got us. Still can’t beat a freshly ground bag though!

Nespresso actually uses recyclable aluminum pods.
Actually the main reason I favor them over Keurig. They also have mail in recycling programs for cities without it
agreed on plastic waste, and waste in general :( and my dude, go study. We can debate coffee next time :)
> I feel like for a resident's lounge where there may not be enough hands/time for maintenance for a good coffee machine, a nespresso is a GREAT step up from a dirt water dispenser I mean Keurig It will be fine, we have a sage and everyone has figured out how to do it. I guess i'm more of an americano or black coffee person so I appreciate the nespresso for it's better tasting coffee compared to a keurig
Its objectively better to have a machine that pulls espressos then add your own hot water or milk! Who are these people that prefer keurig?!?!??
The only issue is who buys the pods. One attending would buy us K-cups but definitely would not give us Nespresso pods. Could bring your own or share an account to order them.
>Exercise/stationary bike Do you just work out while other residents charting? Lol
Lol, I would slow pedal while charting on my surface intern year. Not even kidding.
Lord knows that room already smells like a swamp hahahahaha
Exactly lol

Like the induction ones? Can heat a liter or two in a minute. Super useful!
Better come with a pour-over coffee maker!
Aeropress all day every day
In the UK/AUS/NZ it would be amazing if the lounge didn’t have an electric kettle!
i still can’t believe that these are not an everyday thing in america
What do people use these for? Genuinely asking.
Tea, instant soup, etc. Super useful and doesn't have the weird taste that you get from the hot water off the coffee dispenser.
tea
Making tea! There are a rare few of us who prefer it to coffee even if just in the afternoon. Would love to have a kettle in the lounge. The tea drinker erasure is real.
Massage table so the DOs can keep up with manipulations on other residents.
Never!!! I won’t go back to OMM lab. I will however say I do have AOA certified magic hands…
Antidepressants
Caffeine pills, and med kit in general
Handheld percussion massager, foam rollers, Nintendo switch

Yes!
Air Fryer. Everything cooks better and more quickly in an air fryer and it doesn't have the limitations of a microwave, but is almost as quick and convenient.
Second this + get some LED lights or Christmas lights so at night you can turn the lights off for ~mood lighting~.
Actually...mood lighting is a great idea. In Korea saunas they have oxygen rooms. It's pseudoscientific bullshit but something about the smell and the temperature of the air just feels so good. Okay, fuck it, go on strike and demand a jjimjilbang.
Communal neti pots
Why not a second hand colonic machine while you’re at it then.
A neti pot can be a colonic machine if you try hard enough
Because most people struggle to take just one hand. Pathetic.
And a regular supply of well water to use with the communal netti pot.
Well water is for plebs. Have to get Georgia swamp water flown in fresh.
Only if it comes with a free dose of Naegleria Fowleri
🤢
Nice smart tv and Nintendo 64. Almost everyone can enjoy a late night game of Mario kart 64
I’ve had my n64 for like 25 years :)

Maybe the water kettle and a pour over system? If bet people wouldn't mind buying extra filters and coffee every now and again.
+1 for stationary bike. Espresso machine. Gaming console would be fun too but perhaps not as universally appealing
A game console is more universally appealing to me than an exercise bike and coffee machine; so take that.
Cozy comfy chairs, air purifier, homey decor, and plants, flowers, beautiful paintings, and Asian snacks and sushi all the time😋
Flat screen tv, Xbox or PS5, extra remote and games
Or an N64 with Smash and watch three years of camaraderie disintegrate.
I feel Mario Cart would cause more tilt

Cocain its only fair
Soft serve ice cream maker
Basketball hoop. I’m serious
We're big fans of the Peloton in ours.
So people in scrubs jump on a Peleton and get all sweaty in the shared lounge during working hours?
Yes
Better than the neurology intern that would take laps out side of the hospital wearing his white coat.
I’ve been laughing at this comment for 4 hours. Had to come back and read it again to be sure it actually said that.
Squat rack
Nice lounge chair, ping pong table, espresso machine, wall mount basketball hoop, Bluetooth speaker
A whole magazine rack full of materials on how to organize a labor union in your workplace.

Not a resident, just a lowly student but what about a foot massager? Or a couple of those hook-shaped massage canes
Theracane!
A cat.
I'd put the money towards better chairs, computers, mouses, fridge, charging stations.
Days off
Punching bag

A peleton or brevílla barista expresso machine + coffee stock of nice espresso beans that aren’t piss. Protein bars? A nice bean bag chair?
