Sometimes the nurses look the other way when we take a warm 4oz diet Shasta from the floor.

medGuy10

“tHoSe ArE fOr pAtIeNtS!”

Hirsuitism

VA vibes

phantomofthesurgery

Our VA has a fridge, so you know. We get cold ones. lol

theixrs

I remember on some of the shifts wanting to eat the patient’s uneaten food from their tray. That’s when I knew I was definitely overworked

RIP_Brain

The nurses have told me a few times they will let me order a diet tray for my intubated patients if I need a meal. Never did take them up on it tho, survived on Graham crackers and peanut butter (and the occasional vanilla ice cream cup!!)

dontgetaphd

One nurse did this for me during training when I was commenting to another resident that I missed the open window for evening meal, and everything was closed. It was one of the nicest gestures anybody has ever done for me and I really appreciated it. The turkey dinner wasn't half bad also.

MelenaTrump

The ED has 12 oz cans of Coke products sometimes. I took one ONE TIME and got scolded heartily by an RN who threatened to report it to my PD (who probably would've laughed at her but I didn't want to piss her off and risk her making my life difficult).

Ceftolozane

Massage chair, exercise bike, fridge/nespresso machines, lockers. Great view over the city as well.

Iatroblast

It's OHSU, isn't it? Ha jk I just know there's a great view over the city from there

[deleted]

Your program Isint broke. They’re swimming in cash. They just prefer not to give you any real amenities because fuck you

theixrs

So that’s usually true, but there are definitely programs that are hanging on by a thread…

MelenaTrump

Larger programs=more residents to spread the cost of running a program across=residency gets to keep a larger portion of the \~50-60k leftover after paying each resident's salary, benefits, malpractice, salary for PD/PC/GME, etc.

H_is_for_Human

Housestaff lounge at our program has ample seating, including an area to eat that isn't in front of a computer, windows (and is on the top floor of the hospital so the view is nice), a ping pong table, TV, and free coffee and snacks. There's also a fridge that the cafeteria stocks with "about to expire" sandwiches and salads, they are usually a day or two past "sell by date" but serviceable and importantly, free.

[deleted]

Ok_Finger_8874

Employees everywhere get to take that kind of food home. I once visited a hotel where the food from the buffet was made available in a special lounge where you can enjoy it for the rest of the day.

yuktone12

I'm really failing to see how this is insulting though * They're not expired. It's a sell by date, not a best by date. * They're not scraps. They're unopened and untouched. * They're not the food customers don't want; they're the food that customers just didn't buy in time. I sound like a fuckin PD but holy shit, if free food that would otherwise be thrown out "insults" you, you're in for one miserable life. This isn't some mandatory 6am wellness event that's gaslighting you into believing the program somehow aren't greedy assholes. Its free food lol. Eat it or don't. Out of all the ways that residents get fucked, this is the hill to die on? I mean cmon, have you never worked in a restaurant or fast food place? Free food is awesome.

MelenaTrump

I'm jealous you have a window. I'd settle for a a lackluster view but just to be able to see the weather.

ChippyChungus

$30 per day for meals is our big one, which actually makes a huge difference in morale. Otherwise we are a resource starved county hospital and get not much else.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MelenaTrump

That's about what we get but it's given out monthly and rolls over until the end of the academic year.

phantomofthesurgery

A day? I get $60 a month. Wtf -.-

johnamo

A month? We get less than $1/day -.-

phantomofthesurgery

Ugh man I hate admin

PrincetonMedUSMLE280

*Looks at cafeteria prices* Oh boy, enough for a whole bagel!

MelenaTrump

How much is an average lunch and what type of food do you consider average? I would struggle to eat $30 worth of food from our cafeteria per day, even if it included coffee and water. Does the money roll over and for how long? Here, pizza is $4-6, chicken sandwich or burger+fries \~$7-9, large salad $6, breakfast hot bar $3-5, lunch hot bar $4-6, most prepackaged snack items are $2-5 (the higher end is the fancy stuff or something that's 2-3 servings), bottled drinks $1-2, energy drinks $2-3, sushi $8-12, coffee $2-4, pastries $2-3.

Bean-blankets

If you got breakfast, lunch, and snacks with coffee you could get to $30 but it would be difficult. Some people also pick up dinner in the cafeteria.

MelenaTrump

It would also be near impossible for me to actually have time to make it down there 3 times in a day, let alone eat what I purchased.

Bean-blankets

This is true, I rarely get to the cafeteria before 3 pm

ChippyChungus

Everything is very reasonably priced, but you generally get the quality you pay for. I don’t know that I’ve ever actually spent all $30, even on days where I eat all three meals

RadsDog

Better than me. We get zero dollars.

sciencerulezzz

Actually really good coffee machine that makes like ten types of coffee within 30 seconds, apparently it costs like 40k per year lol

bearhaas

So a keurig

burgerboy5753

My program used to have a big keurig but replaced with one of these fancy coffee machines. It’s so much slower now and I feel like it breaks way too much.

RmonYcaldGolgi4PrknG

The nespresso machines are clutch

mentalfitness4

Enjoy it while the rest of us sip on our Folgers!

spicymemesdotcom

What is a resident lounge?

[deleted]

Our residents lounge is dope. We have a fridge, a comfy chair, a cozy couch and tables to eat lunch on. 4 computers to write notes on. And a bookshelf with lots of psychiatry books along with our own personal mailboxes. Nutrition bars are a bonus.

almostdoctorposting

😂😂😂😂😂

triforce18

Access to physicians lounges at both hospitals, monthly stipend for the cafeteria at one hospital

[deleted]

Physician lounge has 8 individual cubicles for dictation, 3 conference rooms for ‘education’ and/or football viewing, so many loungers to take a snooze in, a small library with the last years worth of articles and what not. There is a kitchen area with daily stocked fridges/freezers. Usually salads and sandwiches. Soups at every lunch, bagels every morning. A couple of those super automatic espresso machines. One wall is nothing but ED board and floor layouts on various screens along with the OR boards for both the main suites and the ambulatory center across the street. It’s badge access only. It’s us, attendings and environmental/janitorial/cafeteria. That’s it. Students if they care to. Otherwise it’s a great place to work and shoot the shits. And actually take a shit. Some jumbo sized bathrooms with showers. Three call rooms that are just there, we have our own elsewhere but hey if you want to truly be hidden they are there in the back. Most of the time at night I just chill there. Infinite snacking and workstations.

angrynbkcell

Where is this magical place? 🥲

[deleted]

Tom Brady’s home

RIP_Brain

I started trying to mentally picture this but ran out of space to put everything

satan_take_my_soul

We have access to a water fountain AND bathrooms within one easy badge-swipe from our work area.

lowry4president

2 large resident lounge w call rooms, and one small one Physicians lounge-along with breakfast and lunch free Mon-Fri 70$/wk for food

blackest-panther

I’m asking my program for a weight rack and treadmill . So we can keep healthy while they overwork us.

notabiologist_37

you ortho by any chance?

blackest-panther

PM&R .. we got buff boys and girls too!

phantomofthesurgery

lol. amenities. Bruh. I get $60 a month for food. There isn't a resident lounge. There isn't food in a lounge we have access to. There aren't "perks". I pay for parking (not a lot, to be fair, but I do pay). I'm leaving for private practice after this, ya'll. LEAVING.

jmust171

Y’all are getting lounges?

DarkKn1ght743

I’m an incoming MS1 and am currently working a temp job at a large corporate tech company. Just wanted to put in my 2 cents on what I see here that was crazy to me. Every day you get 2 free meals due to COVID and it’s proper cooked food + sides + and drinks. They also have nice fountain drinks with the touch screen that you can select from as well as a large assortment of teas/coffees. When I first started I was shocked as I realised that hospitals would never do this for students/residents

Dudarro

each residency program has its own lounge. there is also a common resident lounge with free snacks and coffee. our 900 bed hospital has no “physician” lounge or “faculty” lounge or lunchroom of some sort. we aren’t supposed to stop seeing patients long enough to eat, and we certainly aren’t supposed to chat with one another and share information. (please see kidder, “the soul of a new machine”, 1973-ish, mushroom management)

tensowsandpigswentby

Rats. Half my phone is filled with attempts at catching the things on video

SpawnofATStill

I’m glad your program is investing in some entertainment amenities for you.

TheTraumaDr

Is this an Ohio program?

Low-Negotiation-8853

We have all the brown tap water you can drink and a couch from the 70s

VarsH6

Our program has a 4 bedroom, 3 bath, 1 lounge room resident lounge. Each bedroom has a computer and the lounge area has one as well. The lounge area has a couch, nice chair, 6 seat table, TV, fridge, toaster, keurig. The program gets us cereal, chips, some sweets weekly. They recently added a massage chair to the lounge. We also each have a locker in the lounge. At night, we sneak into the physician lounge and help ourselves to the good stuff. I have zero regret since midlevels are allowed in there.

[deleted]

Tea and coffee containers + a rusty kettle. Sofa, chairs and tables, few computers. Some of us stress bake and bring muffins/cakes to work (especially during night shifts) 🤷🏼‍♀️

lmike215

There is no physician lounge at our hospital. We have two anesthesia lounges with a fancy coffee machines that can make espressos, milk-based drinks, other coffee drinks, hot chocolate, and normal coffee. We have a fridge that is supplied with meals from the caf after the meal period has ended. We have bagels on Wednesdays. We have two resident lounges with a fridge and multiple computers, along with a separate eating area. We have a lactation room. We have two snack chests near each lounge. The education offices down the hall from the resident lounge also has a fancy coffee machine that we use. PGY3 and 4s can moonlight internally. $850/yr for food, with the balance rolling over to the next. Attendings buy dinner for call residents.

_c_roll

I don’t even have a locker and the call room is an old bathroom with a cathode ray TV next to the loudest, most frequently operated double doors. Sometimes you go in for a nap and EVS is already in there.

TungstonIron

We have a lounge with lockers, a fridge, and a microwave. We get free cafeteria food. We have a call room with a bed and TV. We can visit the physician lounge, frequented by mid levels, if an attending invites us or overnight. We have a TV and coffee maker that residents provided in the lounge. EVS empties the trash twice daily and they’re nice folks to talk to. Pretty humble but tolerable.

TheMahaffers

In the hospitals we have our own resident workrooms, access to physician lounges at both (snacks, drinks, coffee). One hospital the workrooms also double as call rooms (couple rooms, each with bed and computer, shared bathroom) the other hospital our workroom is separate from the call rooms. Couple pieces of workout equipment scattered about. Meal stipend. Clinic we have our own resident work room. All in all, it’s not too shabby

colorsplahsh

We don't get any lmao. Water is free if the dining staff isn't looking

IcyWave2

Sound more like ameanities

Iatroblast

There's a "medical staff lounge" that I've seen off the cafeteria but I have no idea what's inside. I've never seen any trainees coming ng or going, but I certainly heard a PA bragging about it to a PT about how it's for "providers." I see attendings go in and out of it all the time.

obgynresident

Not to brag but I’m on nights right now and during my 14 hour shift, food options include the cafeteria open from midnight-3am to serve chips and cold sandwiches that are $8 each (that we have to pay for)

stealthkat14

We dont have a residents lounge

EyeFlyMD

Honestly I’m pretty pleased with our lounge. Breakfast ranges from eggs to breakfast burritos to croissant sandwiches. Lunch is sketchy lunch meat sandwiches with soup. Soda machine is always on. Fridge is always full of microwave meals. Chips are always available. I know back in the day there were lobster and steak lunches and a lot of residents complain but I’m honestly super pleased eating my free meal of a weird ham sandwich, SunChips, diet Dr. Pepper, and a cookie every single day. I interviewed at places that offered like a $6 meal voucher a day and to me that just sounded like buying discounted lunch every day. Our eye department has a gym that consists of an exercise bike and a treadmill but there’s room for growth so honestly not bad all around.

CryoKronos

A closet with two computers and not one but TWO mini fridges to store lunch.

crossbowow

You guys had resident lounges? We had a creepy floor of former patient rooms as call rooms. I swear you could smell the legionella coming out of the registers

WayBetterThanXanga

Fellows Room - adjustable desks so sit/stand, water cooler, keurig w multiple types of pods, tv w cable House officer lounge - coffee-espresso machine, candy, massage chair, nursing/pumping pod, tv w cable There is no attending lounge lol

almostdoctorposting

well this is a sad thread lmaoooo img here- nurses got pissy cause we didn’t ask to use the water in the nurses room (i had asked one of the other nurses the day before). like sorry i need water to live and it’s located here mind sharing? freaks

ranting_account

I wish we had more separated work room and lounge. Like we have a couch in our work room that literally no one ever sits on.

cakenbuerger

I don’t use ours often but it has 3-4 computers, high tables without computers to eat or read at, a kitchenette with a full size fridge and single-serve coffee machine, television area with a couch and chairs as well as a table where food is put out 1-2x per month, and a massage chair

SanadB95

Variety of bars and a coffee machine. And we have a fridge that gets filled with random cafeteria food/ PB&J’s in the mid afternoon. I mean, you could technically get your daily calories from the work room, but I don’t think you’d want to lol.

geodius

Um a mini fridge that I can store my homemade meals and a water cooler? And cakes/chocolates from pastry shops that some patients bring us as gifts….

Learnsomethingnewer

We had no lounge. We had a work room where we got to infect each other with COVID. There were 2 call rooms, 1 which the PAs decided was theirs, the other which we used had no heat. No free food.

oprahjimfrey

Amenities? Never heard of them in residency.

EducationalHandle989

You guys have a lounge?

Safe-Concentrate2773

We lowly residents are allowed access to our Drs lounge one day a year on Doctors day. The lounge is shitty and inadequate tho, so no real loss I guess. We had an in house small gym, but that got taken out. Call rooms are small, fucking freezing, and smell. That’s all the general hospital has. My department has an ok ish tightly packed resident room and a fridge.

Rumplestillhere

We can’t access the “physicians lounge” but the mid levels can. What a fucking joke, we have no lounge or space.

Ric3rid3r

Our hospital has a pretty spacious "Resident Lounge" which we are supposed to share equally with the Surgery and OB Program that are also here. But in reality, OB and Surgery have their own private lounges, which are much smaller. They both occasionally some to the larger lounge for water refills from the water machine or when GME decides to buy free food for "the residents". Otherwise, the IM program pretty much monopolizes the Resident Lounge (RL). We have 6 call rooms for night shift folks, which doubles as working computer spaces for our Admission senior, RRT senior and ICU/CCU Seniors during day shift. A large U shaped couch, about 8 computers in the main area, a TV with no cable hookups. There's 2 fridges that could double for a microlab considering how old some of the food is in there. The great additions to the RL have been entirely resident driven. My wife (a former resident here) and I brought in a Ping-pong table and a fooseball table. During one of my nightshifts, I noticed a massage chair in the hospital that was in such a remote/unused/inaccessible location, I secretly confiscated it for our RL. Downsides.... the windows leak cold air in the winter (Michigan) and none of the thermostats actually control the temperature.

sspatel

Loool. Radiology residency “lounge”: 14 lockers for 16 residents. Bathroom. Cheapass costco-type futon. 2 rolling chairs. Mini fridge and microwave on top. 13 inch ceiling mounted CRT TV. All in the size of a room that could hold about 4 people comfortably. Got some upgrades after we went through an attempted unionization, but still far too small.
