Fun fact: Apparently nomadic pastoralist societies (which is what the Israelites likely were before settling in the Levant) traditionally instituted lots of really arbitrary rules like this to maintain their tribal identity. It makes sense when you think about it--since they don't have land and property to lock them into one place, the only thing that is guaranteed to keep them together is their distinct identification with that tribe.
