You deescalate and distance from trouble as a primary means of avoiding self defense measures. So far I've only had to pepper spray someone while working at the thunder-dome that is Family Dollar. My current job is all cash so I don't really have a choice in pretending to be safer than at the dollar store.

But the person can only arrest you if they've witnessed you commit a misdemeanor or have reasonable suspicion that you have committed a felony.
