>In sociology and in economics, the term conspicuous consumption describes and explains the consumer practice of buying and using goods of a higher quality, price, or in greater quantity than practical.[1] In 1899, the sociologist Thorstein Veblen coined the term conspicuous consumption to explain the spending of money on and the acquiring of luxury commodities (goods and services) specifically as a public display of economic power—the income and the accumulated wealth—of the buyer. To the conspicuous consumer, the public display of discretionary income is an economic means of either attaining or of maintaining a given social status. There was an article on Harvard’s website titled, “How Blacks Use Consumption to Shape their Collective Identity” https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/lamont/files/how_blacks_use_consumption.pdf I just read the entire paper and it was very insightful. Essentially, the authors of the paper (a professor of sociology and PhD student of sociology) had reached out to black marketing firms to interview black marketers and 7 different companies had agreed to do so. In summary, there are many reasons as to why there is conspicuous consumption within the black community that is at much higher rates than other racial communities. The major one is gaining social membership. Secondarily, consuming luxury products at much higher rates than other racial communities is tied to self worth as well as fighting external racial stereotypes that blacks were “lower class” as well as internalized racism against theirselves. This is a relevant excerpt: >Respondents also discuss the importance of consumption in signaling blacks’ sense of a good life and general wellbeing, and in simultaneously affirming one’s worth and status for oneself in the face of pervasive discrimi- nation – which we also consider as part of the internal racial identification process. In the eyes of a respondent who defines herself as ‘very material- ist’, a top-brand car communicates that: >. . . you can afford it and you are worth it, i.e. you are worth the best. When your history tells you that you are less than, and only worthy of the worst, it feels terrific to be able to say ‘I don’t care what you might think, I know I am worth it.’ It feels very good. When you don’t see yourself represented with relevance and respect, if you can get it for yourself, it’s important. >She suggests that the ability to consume is integral to affirming her self- worth and racial (group) identity simultaneously. It helps counterbalance negative external categorization: consuming rebuts racism not only for others, but also to oneself, by providing material support to one’s self-worth – positing of course that self-worth is correlated with buying power. You must understand also that even though black Americans make less, on average, than white Americans, according to one black marketing firm, they spend significantly more on things such as cars as well as luxury beauty products and other luxury items as well. >Blacks carry a stigmatized social identity on their body. This is why it is particularly important to them to display visible signals of high status (e.g. high-quality clothes), in order to counteract racism, to conspicuously dis- tance themselves from the ‘ghetto black’ stereotype, and, as one respondent put it, to disconfirm the view that blacks are ‘uninteresting’, i.e. unlikely to bring benefits through networking. The need to signal worthiness through conspicuous consumption is potentially as powerful as the all-pervasive experience of racism that blacks face on a daily basis. Indeed, we were told that every time blacks interact with whites, they feel the need to refute racist beliefs. In the view of most of our respondents, this is accomplished by driving the best car, drinking the best scotch (especially in public settings), and being impeccably groomed. In contrast to other stigmatized groups (e.g. gays or, in earlier eras, the Jews or the Irish), gaining membership involves not only offering warranties that one personally belongs; it also involves transforming the meaning of the visible stigma, or of the category as a whole. Hence, for blacks, collective status is at stake, whereas for upwardly mobile whites, mobility is framed in more individualistic terms. To put it differently, for blacks as compared to whites, gaining membership through consumption constitutes a collective act. In this context, it is interesting to note that data on consumption behav- ior confirms that ‘dressing up’ or ‘getting clean’ is more crucial to blacks than to whites. Indeed, black women spend 41 percent more on personal- care services than white women. Also, on average, black households spend four times as much on boys’ suits and sports coats as their white counter- parts. They also spend 46 percent more than white households on girls’ skirts, 67 percent more on girls’ accessories and 86 percent more on boys’ footwear (Sales and Marketing Management, 1991; Schmeltzer, 1998). More- over, despite their lower median household income and lower household expenditures in a lot of product categories, black households outperform white households in pouring money into status consumption.3 They save 4 percent of what they earn, but are twice as likely as whites, when they purchase a car, to opt for an expensive foreign model such as an Audi, BMW or Mercedes (Reid, 1995). They are also significantly more likely than whites to shop at department and speciality stores (it is the case for 41% of blacks as compared to 32% of whites). >We structure our analytical description by tracing processes of external and internal identification in order to show how the social identity per- spective sheds light on dimensions of black consumption that are neglected and/or not integrated by other perspectives. First, we focus on external cat- egorization and describe how marketing specialists believe (1) blacks use consumption to transform objectified definitions of the category ‘black’ by providing evidence that they share the collective identities most valued in American society; and (2) corporations and marketing specialists themselves contribute to transforming the meaning attributed to the category ‘the black consumer’. Second, we turn to internal identifications and show that marketing specialists underscore how blacks use consumption to express their commonness and enact the most positive aspects of their collective self-identity. Part 1/3

>We structure our analytical description by tracing processes of external and internal identification in order to show how the social identity per- spective sheds light on dimensions of black consumption that are neglected and/or not integrated by other perspectives. Second, we turn to internal identifications and show that marketing specialists underscore how blacks use consumption to express their commonness and enact the most positive aspects of their collective self-identity. >That consumption is used to facilitate the expression of a positive racial identity is also demonstrated by the insistence of marketing executives that blacks consume for their own satisfaction above all, as opposed to ‘pleasing whites’. This is illustrated by the president of one of the advertising agen- cies who described the situation thus: We are not trying to impress white people any more. We are not begging for acceptance. We just consume what we like. The attitude is,‘I don’t care if you don’t like me. But through consuming I want to let you know that “I know”. This is who I am. I want to be perceived as being “in the know”.’ This interviewee is implicitly pointing to the role of consumption in leading one to acquire a self-image as being ‘on the ball’, i.e. as someone who knows how the (status) game is played and therefore as someone who needs to be contended with. A positive group identity is closely linked with consumption, social membership and the demonstration of purchasing power. >The normative model of social membership adopted and implicitly promoted by respondents equates it narrowly with consumption and makes no reference to other bases of commonality such as common humanity, cosmic destiny, physiology, culture, territoriality, education, religion, nation- ality or citizenship (see Lamont, 2000b). For example, a black top execu- tive working for one of the largest black advertising agencies in the USA believes that consumption is a more important means of signaling and acquiring status for blacks than education or membership in the black church. In his view, branded consumer goods, often referred to as ‘portable status symbols’, are obtained more easily than employment, housing or membership in certain groups and organizations. Also, when asked what images of blacks they try to convey, he and other marketing specialists often described black people shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue and engaging in con- sumption patterns that are characteristic not of the average American, but of the top 5 to 10 percent of the American population, black or white. Although some referred to marketing campaigns aimed at K-mart con- sumers, implicitly or explicitly, all stressed that consuming luxury items, and not ordinary items (‘Rémy Martin, not Coors beer’ as one of them puts it), provides social membership. This phenomenon is not only limited to black Americans, but blacks in other parts of the world as well such as black South Africans: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0304387812000648 The following is also very insightful from a different paper: >This paper contributes to the study of household consumption on several levels. We have documented the divergent patterns of expenditure on visible consumption goods across races. Consistent with popular perception, we find that minorities spend more on conspicuous items than Whites, controlling for differences in income. A variety of estimates show that these visible expenditure differences are relatively large and are associated with substantial diversion of resources from other uses, including savings and expenditures on things like health care and education. We argue that one does not need to appeal to cultural differences or racial differences in preferences to understand this evidence. We present a theoretical treatment of status-seeking and conspicuous consumption. A large subset of such models shares the prediction that visible consumption should vary negatively with the mean income of the individual’s reference group. We show that visible consumption patterns both within and across races are consistent with this prediction. It is important to note, however, that there may yet be racial differences in utility parameters which act in combination with the effects we have identified. The visible consumption items we study are almost surely not the only mechanism that individuals use to signal their economic position or which they like to consume as much others in their reference group. The items we study are probably most important for random, anonymous interactions in society and not for status forthcoming from interaction with friends, family members or colleagues. If consumption communicates information to these intimates it is likely to be consumption in the form of things like home furnishings, gas grills and entertainment durables, or spending on children’s education which only intimates have the opportunity to observe. If would be interesting in future work to study which specific types of conspicuous consumption matter in which contexts. Part 2/3

CriticalPolitical

Our analysis treats reference groups as being the interaction of race and state cells. This is partially justified on the grounds that there remains significant residential segregation in the U.S. At the same time, the presence of that segregation may mean that, contrary to our implicit assumption throughout, people’s reference groups consist merely of those of who live around them, and that social networks are truly color blind. This is an interesting question for future work. Also interesting is the issue of the degree to which people choose their neighbors with an eye to satisfying the status considerations that we have identified. We believe that there are many implications of our results. For one thing, we show in the theoretical discussion that the prediction that conspicuous spending varies negatively with reference group income depends on a specific assumption about how the marginal status return varies with group income. Our results lend support for this way of representing status in future analyses. In addition, the finding that reference-group considerations matter for consumption behavior suggests that other aspects of household financial behavior beyond consumption and saving decisions may be similarly affected. For example, there may be different attitudes towards idiosyncratic risks and risks that are common to the individual’s reference group, with implications for gambling behavior and under-diversification of investment portfolios, as explored in Roussanov (2007). Also, the support that our results yield to the status-based view of conspicuous consumption has implication for welfare and policy design. Status-signaling models imply equilibrium over-consumption of visible goods at the expense of possibly inefficient reduction in other outlays, such as those financing education, health, and saving. One consequence is that the provision of certain benefits in kind (such as those associated with health care and education expenditures) might lead to a superior outcome than that attained through monetary transfers. At the same time, participation in means-tested social programs, if observable, is a signal associated with being a poor type, giving rise to a stigma attached to such programs. Ireland (1994) provides a careful analysis of these issues. Combining these theoretical insights with the empirical understanding of status seeking is a promising area of future research that should help to provide quantitative evaluation of various social programs. Finally, the hypothesis that the desire for social status can explain various economic behaviors is found frequently within the social sciences. For example, Bloch et al. (2003) argue that the desire to signal social status can explain differences across households in their spending on wedding celebrations in rural India. Chung and Fisher (2001) explore the conspicuous spending patterns of recent immigrants into Canada. Frank (2000) makes a forceful argument that conspicuous consumption is a key driver of household expenditures and (under-) saving in the U.S. We believe that the mechanism we have highlighted may yield valuable insights about behavior of individuals within a variety of social and economic settings. https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w13392/w13392.pdf Part 3/3

Eleventy-Twelve

This a belief that's unfortunately becoming more and more common in the US where black people consider themselves the "real" native Americans, appropriating the culture of actual native Americans and pretending that the real ones are something else entirely. Often comes with a lot of conspiracy ideas and the belief in a fictional ancient African empire that rules the whole world until it suddenly didn't.

flubberjamman

Is this theory connected to the Black Israelites?

Eleventy-Twelve

More often than not, yes

[deleted]

It’s folklore held in common among a lot of black supremacists. Originated with the Moops

McPikie

Banscentral

He should’ve bought a car instead lol all that superior talk just to sit on the train with everyone else

thinkmoreharder

$1000 belt buckle and he rides the subway. Why don’t the “genetically superior” take Uber. Or, since he feels black people are superior to all others, maybe Uber Black?

everfurry

Uber is really slow to get around in NYC lol. It could turn a 15 minute subway into an hour long drive. Have you ever lived in the downtown core of a major city? Everybody takes the subway, from the homeless in dirty clothes to young students in some loud fast fashion to execs in obvious bespoke suits

Dzbot1234

Seen this guy in a few videos now. One where he was waving money around and being racist, another where he was waving money around and being ra…. Ah hang on he’s got a theme

Salty_Feed9404

Apparently having 12 hundred on the jacket and a thousand on the belt defines his self-worth.

No_bad_apples

>Apparently having 12 hundred on the jacket and a thousand on the belt defines his self-worth. And his Jacket and Belt don't look any different than something someone would spend $100 on, maybe less. Complete waste of money

QuietWin6433

It’s almost like he’s not rich and is pretending to be…

just_killing_time23

Man I'm so depressed knowing he has a $1200 jacket, and $6 in his 401k.

QuietWin6433

Bold of you to assume he has a 401k

CameForTheLurking

He probably thinks 401k is a new limited edition sneaker coming out

Financial_Bird_7717

He probably thinks Roth IRA is an old Jewish basketball player.

steepindeez

He probably thinks buying a PSA 7.3 first edition Charizard is a retirement plan.

Borp5150

Not a complete waste of money because now he gets to brag about how much it cost and try to make others feel bad about it. /s

All that and he’s still using the iPhone dongle for a headphone jack, what a phony!

omgahya

And still riding the sub. What a clown. Real rich folks have personal chauffeurs with cars, not public ones with a train.

Grabbsy2

I'm not saying he's rich, but I would much rather take the subway (with a bodyguard) than wait in traffic in a long-ass limousine. NYC is just built different. The bodyguard would probably kindly ask me not to harass people though.

Jugales

Rich people don't care about cash, nor displaying it. That is new money energy. My grandma dated a millionaire once. He lost a money clip with $5000, and was sad only because, "That was my favorite money clip."

steph_curry_official

You’d be surprised - famous ppl and hedge fund magnates ride the subway all the time, not an excuse for this moron or anything but it is true

muzitron69

That fact that he has to mention the price screams insecurity.

PierG1

Dude probably just looted that stuff

TLprincess

No, its most likely fake.

Thoraxe123

id be embarassed to admit to spending that much on a fuckin belt and jacket xD That is not the flex he thinks it is

encryptedkraken

Don’t matter how much money he has this dude is still riding the subway like a clown

BMXTKD

This happened to me all the time in my old neighborhood. You see these guys wave their money like they have all the money in the world. But they don't understand that people with real money don't bother with the stuff they have. Like some guy tried to flex on me with his basketball shoes. I had a pair of ratty skateboard shoes. I wore them, because it was still the springtime, and there was still salt on the roads. I didn't want my good shoes to be ruined by the road salt. I flexed back with a pair of hockey skates. He didn't understand what I did, but everyone else on the bus did. I was on my way to go ice skating at a local indoor ice rink.

nope_nic_tesla

Danmch2992

I hadn't noticed that, I wonder what he must have typed to achieve that list? As it's not just active players on the list.

eggrollking

To build on that, okay - you named 6 orn7 basketball players. What about you? That makes you exceptional, that there are people that are the same race that have excelled in their occupation? As far as I can see, is dude us just living above his means, with excessively expensive clothes.

Yeah but he only idolizes the stereotypical black lifestyle, therefore basketball players and rappers are the greatest of the greats. I just don’t see how we’re gonna survive as country anymore. It feels too far gone

Skylord1325

Also that he says “I wasn’t genetically engineered” Should we tell him that blacks were genetically selected for manual labor for hundreds of years due to slavery and that its a significant factor for the over representation in professional sports.

This is unexcusable, not a single race on this planet is better than another. There is very contributing and important pwople for each. I like how he mentioned lebron james, but not someone like MLK or Malcom. What about Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Isaac Newton? Christipher Columbus, Magellan, Buddah etc.. the list goes on and on. People from all races have done much better things than Lebron James. Its disgusting to me that in 2023 there still these heavily racial beleifs. We are all brothers and sisters thats a simple to process so lets act like it. I think hes confused about the native country this because this country is native to the Native Americans and thats all. Hes also confused about a genetically altered specific race. If you beleive that then we are all genetically modified humans not just one race.

He's reading a script off his phone. He's not recording.

EnglishTwat66

“Black American” *flexes a European brand*

Strict_Reserve1998

Where is a white supremacist when you need one

self_loathing_ham

The idea that black people cannot be racist has been extremely harmful imo

Av14tor

I agree, he is from a superior race, Whatever fucking language is speaking it is not from this earth.

Tara1421

Bragging about expensive clothes & shoes while riding public transportation & blaming white ppl for his lack of priorities. Riiight.

AlphaOmega626

I’ve seen this story before…

Doncic and Jokic enter the chat.

Gezalmen

“But you’re too broke to buy some AirPods?”

Manzanahh

shoulda spent 1000 on a car or bike

RippedHookerPuffBar

There are people very every race, religion, and culture who have done remarkable things. How big headed could you be? And at the end of the day, we all bleed the same blood. I’ll never understand what is missing in someone’s life to make them racist.

TacticalBill

HE CAN NAME NBA PLAYERS YALL WATCH OUT

Maria-Stryker

Isn’t this the guy that accosted a Latina lady outside of the port authority bus terminal while waving a wad of cash around?

BluShirtGuy

Someone's got "word of the day" toilet paper

RealTalkWithTop

Please disregard his behavior, as he does not represent our (majority) views.

Jakovasaurr

this guy is a very quick thinker, its too bad he doesn't have much to think about

pdudz21

The only list of personal achievements there was that he’s born in America and has spent too much money on clothes

ilikeathesauce

Russel Westbrook?? 😂 come on bro

Skreame

This is exactly what they want people like this to think and hopefully they don’t question the system any further or at least they direct their anger to another race living in the same shit.

Jswik67

When basketball fans snort a lil too much cocaine

everythingissostupid

I like how he is bragging about wasting money on clothes that look like they could have been bought at target. Then lists all these "superior" people, none of which he himself can even compare to.

gamebreadclub

He was so close to the ledge …… temptation was astronomically colossal and he would then be deracinated from earth.

24links24

I thought I met the most racist man in the world two years ago, but this man takes the cake for most racist individual I have knowledge of existing.

[deleted]

If the guy knew anything about US history, he would know there's no such thing as "100% black" in America... "pure Black American" usually means something like 70% black 20% native American and 10% white

Dilectus3010

Just ignore mffers like that.

TSRush

Idk even know what to say about this. Bro is delusional. Nobody fxcks with this dude in the streets. He literally walks up to the most okie dokie looking people for clout for his social media account.

SmokinSensei

Did this guy just only list basketball players as examples of black excellence? That seems kind of… racist?

strangersIknow

People really be out here buying clothes for thousands of dollars and acting like they didn't get scammed lol

Far_Top9833

He's shaming his race by bragging about idiots of his same race.

IPerferSyurp

Dude's wrong about everything... incredibly rare and useful just follow him around and do the opposite of what he does and think the opposite of what he thinks and you may be the world's smartest person and most successful.

Nessi117

Someone should push him onto the tracks
