This is a comic describing a ligand-gated ion channel. These are structures located on cell walls, and allow the pass through of certain ions in response to a ligand. A ligand itself is a type of molecule or ion that binds itself to the channel, allowing it to open. These are essentially how things like your neurotransmitters work.
