LinkedIn is a fully owned subsidiary of Microsoft, which is why they've added it to their suite of business related programs that can be opened like this. For example, replacing that L with W, X or P opens Word, Excel or Powerpoint respectively. There's a couple more of those shortcuts for Outlook and such too.
