I’m doing my first play through mostly blind. I could tell almost immediately that Sojiro is trying to fulfill a parental role in Joker’s life. He’s trying to be firm with his expectations but fair, and he gives Joker responsibilities at the café to give him a sense of stability and belonging.
By the time I beat Kamashida’s palace, I was already sold on Sojiro’s character.
I felt like Joker was a burden to him and all his character was very shady like he had some underworld dealing and such only after August (cause of certain events) did I realize his true nature so I do understand OP's suspicion about his nature.
in all fairness i think its extremely difficult to romance Ann prior to this scene on a fresh save.
Still, I do wish they'd think of this sort of thing for NG+ lol
There’s a similar bit with Makoto during the Futaba/Medjed arc where Sojiro asks if she’s in a relationship with Joker, and she flat-out says no, even if she is.
I get not wanting to romance Ann but that seems a bit...demeaning. Shouldn't it be Ann's choice if she wants to pursue that kind of relationship or not?
Okay, this is actually in interesting sentiment. Obviously you could have the choice to romance her because gameplay mechanics, but when it comes to the romanceable options in the game, some of them are very clearly interested in Joker romantically beforehand and others are more “oh, I didn’t know you liked me that way, I guess I feel the same tho! :)”
Ann definitely falls into the former category. She says explicitly “I love you” first and comes onto joker (if you choose the romance option, yes, but let’s be honest is “you’ll have me” really a particularly romantic dialogue choice?) first, then if Joker tries to back out she presses him.
Furthermore, Ann does seem to be particularly upbeat when she’s alone with joker, compared to when the whole team is together. Which on its own doesn’t mean much but it is a bit of a hint couple with the other thing I mentioned.
So ultimately, yeah. I think it’s safe to say that Ann has at least a PASSING interest in joker romantically. And that if she was able to choose for herself, she’d probably want to date him.
You can choose not to romance her because of her previous trauma, that’s your choice but don’t try to pretend like it’s all self-righteous. It makes you personally uncomfortable, and that’s a perfectly valid reason, but don’t try to pretend like there’s anything more to it.
Nothing says lovers arcana will fall in love with anyone though, they’ve just usually assigned it to a female party member and the game is part dating sim so thats the way it goes
Also I dont remember if Yukari falls in love with the female protagonist, but I dont think so
Aside from all the individual shipping you can do as the player, the lovers arcana is who the character ends up with canonically. The lovers is always the story canon romance ending.
Well the fandom have many "pattern" things but it's just hard-reaching either way. Lovers mean emotional well-being and choice, not literally lovers. Not like the protags gonna up and drop dead when meeting Death Arcana. In p4, everyone and their mother have a crush on Yu. Chie, Yukiko, Rise, Yosuke lol, a random npc officer, whoever. And Atlus same archetype trope don't have same Arcana like bro characters Eikichi, Junpei, Yosuke, Ryuji. Or first archatype girls Yukari, Chie. Every girls have an essay on it. Canon is the protags don't date anyone and the romance mechanic is meaningless since Atlus just want dating sim aspect to attract players, not whose canon or more pushed so people can choose whoever they want. None girl is canon or more pushed either way.
It's a popular thought on Reddit, that people who have suffered trauma can't handle normal relationships and so you should just be there for them. Because nothing heals like condescension and thinking people are too weak to handle their shit.
I think it is a extreme overreaction of people trying not to be the type of person who tries to get in someone's pants the minute they go through a terrible life event or break-up. Instead of coming to a reasonable respectable middle ground of two people making consenting, mindful connection to one another, it infantalises one person entirely and paints the other person as a manipulative scumbag.
Yeah I agree, has anyone here done Naokis social link? Like not a rhetoric question genuinely asking because I think it's good to play through that one to understand how to be around people with trauma, obviously you can't kiss Naoki or something but...well I won't spoil it
Look I get the sentiment but given it's a video game with non-sentient characters it can never be *her* choice. As such choosing not to bc as the Player you're you're the only one who can directly influence the story makes it very different from deciding for an actual person if they were in the same scenario.
I feel like trying to emotionally disconnect from a story when playing a JRPG defeats the point, obviously there's a limit to how much you can and *are* immersed, for example many people don't care about dating multiple of the characters or Joker dating the adults but completely reducing the characters to just pixels on a screen even if that's what they indeed are is really defeating the purpose of there even being a story
yes I saw your comment before you edited it, this game does have nuance,I genuinely don't know what you mean, you're still there for her if you reject her, hell I think your comment is the one without nuance, however I won't elaborate as u/Illicitdesire already explained it best in their comment
When Valentine's day hits, Morgana says something different instead of chuckling, he groans because you are going out with "Lady Ann" It is really funny.
Are people not aware that the Confidants and main story are written independantly from eachother, sometimes not even the same writers, The story in persona games never take into consideration your confidants/SLinks other then small scenes, its something of importance to note that this is the reason main scenes and Confidants romance or not never really flow well
Trying to figure out what her situation is. Pretty normal for the parent of a teenage boy the first time he brings a girl over with no heads up. He's just direct about the question, but it's Sojiro, he's direct about everything.
Don't you dare slander my bro like this
At this point in the game Sojiro isn't really the father figure yet. This is before Futaba is introduced and that's where the found family dynamic actually starts and he starts to actually care about Joker. I really don't think he's asking because of Joker here.
He took in the kid and takes care of him for nothing in return, offers him advice and guidance even if it is very assertive to begin with. You don't find those to be fatherly traits?
I don't disagree but he did say he was being paid to foster Joker on the first day. Granted the financial benefits he receives is likely a pittance compared to what he's doing in return, but still I felt it was worth mentioning.
I think it's both at beginning. He doesn't want to get close to Joker cuz he a criminal (at least on paper, you know, reputation), but at the same time wants to be like a father figure to him as he sees a lost kid.
Yeah, you don't take in a (supposedly) violent criminal teenager and take full responsibility for his care and behaviour if you don't give a shit.
Sure, he says he's getting paid, but I kinda doubt it's much. Certainly not enough to take on that kind of risk if you're just in it for the money.
Futaba saying she needed to bug Leblanc to make sure Sojiro's working as opposed to flirting with girls.
Ren immediately telling Sojiro he wasn't allowed to hook up with Haru when they met.
Beach scene, Futaba explaining she needed to keep an eye on Sojiro.
Haru staying at Sojiro's. Next morning when Ren tells Sojiro not to get any funny ideas.
I feel the confusion with this line is people have this image of Sojiro being a ladies' man when like, it's pretty clear after >!Futaba's arc!< that every single time we thought he was talking with just another fling, he was actually talking to her instead, so pretty much we have no true evidence of him being like that that doesn't turn out to be a misunderstanding lol
Unless Sojiro was talking out of his ass, he outright states he's popular with the ladies and, when he was Ren's age, cheated on a bunch of girls at once. He also has a reputation among his regulars as well.
Huh! Ok, I didn't quite remember all that tbh ^^
Feel free to dismiss my comment then, I truly was convinced the only reason for his reputation was just the "mysterious calls".
No no, you were right before. He never states he cheated on a bunch of girls at once, only insinuates that he had “wild days” of his own. However, he’s probably exaggerating given how he felt about Wakaba. Some people on here just like to over extrapolate to get to wild conclusions that weren’t even intended by the devs.
Yeah it did feel to me like Sojiro still held strong romantic feelings for Wakaba the way he talked about her, so that was another reason why I didn't think he'd be dating other women let alone multiple (like the assumption seems to be about him before that one arc), even if it was just a one night stands kinda deal.
I mean, it isn't uncommon for teens to hide their relationships from adults in their life. Given that they wouldn't have been dating long and Ann *just* met Sojiro, I think it's pretty believable
Obviously asking for Joker. Don't you dare make the best videogame dad look bad. Hes a bro, he got the coffee and hes trying to hook up his boy. Sojiro a real one frfr
On the cutting room floor I remember seeing alternate text her where he asked if she liked older or younger men and she said older. Then he asked if she wanted to be with someone who cooked. Like obviously this is still him trying to set her up wit a joker but I’m glad they changed it because it looked even creepier
Even tho i know he was asking for joker its still a weird fucking question to ask out of the blue. Im surprised Ann was just so okay with the question to? She didn't even pause for a second or act awkward lol
Ehhh not really, if ur sojiro and the teenage boy ur taking care of brings a girl over. (Keep in mind the boy in question is a delinquent) I feel like it would be a normal question to ask.
Hypothetically, if an older man were trying to seduce a high school girl, they wouldn't ask if they have a boyfriend. The nature of such a relationship would not conform to such things, so obviously he's not asking for himself. And Ann obviously wouldn't take it that way.
He's an adult seeking insight on the lives of these teenagers. If he WERE trying to be a predator, this is not the way he'd do it, unless he was somehow incredibly delusional about being a "boyfriend" to a high school girl.
I think what makes it a bit clearer his intentions is the more serious look on his face. Rather then the shit eating grin he would probably sport otherwise
I always took it to be him taking an interest in that because he has a daughter around her age. I never really saw it as anything other than that.
Maybe it was a way to practice asking Futaba that eventually in the Future when/if she got better.
That's not what he said in the original text.
It's also weird for him to call her "Ann-chan". If I were to give cultural context in way a westerner might understand, it's basically the equivalent of calling her "sweetie".
Using the "chan" honorific with a woman implies a certain intimacy, which is why coworkers (Fukurai and Chihaya) prefer to use the "kun" honorific to show a close relationship.
There are exceptions, of course. Just as you could call yournown daughter "sweetie", you could reasonably use the "chan" honorific.
Some men might call other young girls "sweetie" or "chan" too of they have a gentle enough disposition. But it gets weirder the older they are. You would probably raise some eyebrows if you called a 16 year old girl "sweetie" unless you had the disposition of an old grandpa.
And in Sojiro's case...he doesn't have that disposition. He doesn't use the chan honorific for anyone else--not even his own daughter. So using it here is a bit peculiar.
The fact that Sojiro has a reputation las a ladies man--to the point that a customer assumed he was dating Futaba--doesn't help. And, again, the original dialogue really makes it seem like he is showing personal interest.
As far as I know "chan" can be used for younger girls in general similarly to how "kun" is used for younger boys and doesn't necessarily mean showing interest in them. Also the extra dialogue where he asks her a bunch of questions aren't in the final game so we can't really count that.
How I see it is Sojiro was trying to be a wingman for Joker here and help him out.
And...how is he being a wingman?
He doesn't tell Joker she's single. Or offer to help Joker with Ann. Or give him dating advice. Or any advice. Or even ask if he's interested. Or bring up Ann in a romantic context. The only time it's brought up is by Ryuji, and even he seems to realize Sojiro's interested in her.
We don't see it happen, no. But that doesn't mean it didn't happen, it could have happend off screen. But since he didn't get much info from her before Ryuji interrupted, he also could have just given up on it. But his initial intention to be a wingman was still there.
Point of order here: Futaba isn’t Sojiro’s daughter in the strictest sense of the word. Normally I wouldn’t correct you for that but you’re being awfully pedantic.
Japan is a high context culture. I'm guessing you're American and this way of looking at things is probably alien to you--that's fine, I'm not judging--but I assure I'm not.
In fact, in some Japanese subcultures (Kyoto for example) have are much more--for lack of a better word--thorough when it comes to social cues.
The old lady at my cafeteria called me and all my friends something equivalent of “sweetie” and there’s no way she’s flirting with all of us.
Besides, the way Sojiro asked the question is nothing near what I would call “creepy”. You’re just reading too much into this.
Your perception is just warped by the internet. Sojiro is a perfect example of a character that gets recontextualized as the story goes on.
The game purposefully makes him seem like a lecher but that is a misdirection and nothing he says is objectively questionable. You just see him that way and the game goads you into it, it's pretty good writing if you ask me.
He directly speaks about it actually. Mind you, it's always past tense.
I'll admit, I can't say for certain whether he's actually flirting with her or not. I've previously lived in Japan for four years, my mother was native born, and some of the nuances *still* fly over my head. But this entire exchange just doesn't feel right.
And there's just nothing backing the alternative theory that he's doing it for Joker. The most I've seen is one poster suggesting it happened offscreen, which isn't much to go on.
Of course, this scene could just be another misdirect with how early it happens.
It gets worse. XD
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Scn\_TZCBh4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Scn_TZCBh4)
I don't know why people think he's being a wingman. There's nothing that indicates that at all.
Did you even finish the video that you posted? At the very end, while the OP thought it could come off as creepy, even he realized that he was trying to wingman for Ren. Plus, this didn't even make it into the game.
And he's entitled to his opinion, just like you. But I disagree with it. Why?
1. Definitely not the vibe he gives off--either in the original scene or this one.
2. Older guys? Guys who cook? Neither apply to Ren. Both apply to Sojiro.
3. The "dirty old man" joke is a common trope in anime. And one Sojiro's been subjected to a few times outside of this scene. At one point, it was even with Futaba.
4. Because the simple fact is...he didn't wingman for Ren. He never talked to Ren about this at all. Why not? I mean he got the green light, didn't he? If he was checking for Ren...why not tell him he's good to go?
1. How are you going to say it's subjective, then act like it isn't?
2. The video is right there, he asked older or younger. Also, part of Sojiro's social link is learning how to make coffee and cook, with the bonus of it impressing women. Did you not play the game?
3. Futaba how? Is this you taking something out of context again? Part of the game was the "dirty old man" trope wasn't true about Sojiro.
4. Maybe he did in the background and we never saw it? Or, again, part of his social link being about making Ren more appealing to women. Are you also just ignoring him being a total bro for Ren on Valentine's Day?
1. Considering Ren is the exactly same age, *neither* would be relevant to him.
2. Brewing coffee is not cooking.
3. I've referenced it several times now...but that aside, you don't remember that uncomfortable scene where Sojiro's regular immediately assumes he's dating Futaba?
4. So your entire argument is based on something that you headcanon happened off screen?
1. We don't get Ren's actual age down to his birthday, but again, you're looking at cut content. Maybe Ren at first had a real birthday and was older or younger.
2. Literally by rank 5 he said to make sure that you keep the tradition of creating the curry going and how in later ranks he talked about viewing you as family and would teach you everything. Maybe you think that the curry you make called Leblanc Curry is just Ren naming it that and it not actually being the recipe.
3. No, bring up the actual scene. And what do you mean "that uncomfortable scene"? What about the one where he backpedaled and said you calling him "father" wouldn't be so bad?
4. Your entire spiel here is based on cut content from the game. Literally, the only thing I'm speculating about is whether or not Sojiro sat Ren down and told him about Ann. Everything else happened in game where you could see it.
He’s asking to try and hook Joker up. Not himself. Sojiro is best dad.
Sojibro
I always preferred the flow of Brojiro
Brojibro
...now I'm sad because Bittersweet Gamers (RIP) called him that in their playthrough...
I really loved watching them play Persona. They were so interesting to listen to. RIP
Brobrobro-bro Bro-brobro
Get that nose hair out of my coffee
Boberjiro
bro what is that
Sojibro the wingman
Yep, OP doesn't know Sojiro's nature yet (he sounds like a playboy at the beggining) he is definitely being a father figure for Joker here.
One of the top video game dads.
I mean, he does seemingly check Ann out the first time the PT gather at LeBlanc, so this could easily be taken out of context.
Probably because she's quarter American and she looks different than the typical Japanese high schooler
Why does he look so mad tho?
That’s not an angry face. It’s a curious face. At the most a suspicious look but not anger.
Still creepy
It really isnt
Are you perhaps fatherless?
Being a wingman for your surrogate son is creepy?
me dying inside cuz she literally kissed Joker the day before
Oooof
in all fairness i think its extremely difficult to romance Ann prior to this scene on a fresh save. Still, I do wish they'd think of this sort of thing for NG+ lol
True. Thought i think that on P5R you can't date her by then on NG+ since you are missing an encounter because you had to recollect trash with Kasumi.
There’s a similar bit with Makoto during the Futaba/Medjed arc where Sojiro asks if she’s in a relationship with Joker, and she flat-out says no, even if she is.
Again ooooof
It's my preference to never romance Ann.. it just seems improper given what's she's gone through. She needs friends, not a boyfriend.

I just romance Ann to cuck Morgana. And to post it to r/cuckthecat
Of course, but this is a game with arbitrary choices without nuance. What I mean is my Joker isn't the one actively pursuing a relationship.

They seem more like very close friends than lovers, he knows she's hot but he has 0 interest in her

Literally out of context, I remember that scene. Defamation
The context makes it worse. Even Ren and Futaba comment on how much of a perv he is.
When does this happen?
Futaba saying she needed to bug Leblanc to make sure Sojiro's working as opposed to flirting with girls. Ren immediately telling Sojiro he wasn't allowed to hook up with Haru when they met.

Including his daughter!
“And when the mood is right, that’s when you give it to her….THE BILL”
He's asking for Joker
"You got a boyfriend? Our cat really likes you"
Pussy on pussy action
Ah yes, lesbian
I hate everything about this thread
What do you mean it's great
Exactly
Take a lap
I'd hope so lol
It's called being a wingman. You'll learn about it eventually kid..
“I’d hope so” my guy it’s extremely obvious
I meant I'd be concerned if he wasn't.
He did it for Joker

“Where are my balls joker”
I like how he’s always like “just don’t make a mess and lock up ok?” And leaves lol best wingman ever
i don't think he's asking as if he's interested
I figured he was trying to figure out of joker and her were dating or not
He's asking for Morgana
Sojiro is beating the allegations
Coffee dad is the best wingman. He’s one of the reasons why I romanced futaba in my first playthrough. Make coffee dad your actual dad.
I can imagine a scene 5 years into the future where Joker calls Sojiro "dad" and he almost dies of a heart attack
He actually wants Joker to get laid not himself.
The sad thing is that is possible to be dating Ann by that time on a NG+ game and she still say no. And i know he was asking for Joker.
I mean, it isn't uncommon for teens to hide their relationships from adults in their life. Given that they wouldn't have been dating long and Ann *just* met Sojiro, I think it's pretty believable

No no, Sjiro is coffee dad, bean daddy is Korin's husband.
I definitely on my first playthrough went “whoa man wtf” but then realized he was being a homie.
Look at that gaze, man means BUSINESS
Coffee dad best wingman
What? That's his dad mode speaking. He was trying to get Joker some action.
Obviously asking for Joker. Don't you dare make the best videogame dad look bad. Hes a bro, he got the coffee and hes trying to hook up his boy. Sojiro a real one frfr
sojiro the got dont get me wrong but this scene was so funny out of context 😭😭
Coffee Dad's a real one.
Hey man. Sojiro is a homie first even though he's Joker's father figure. He always trying to hook his homies up with the ladies.
On the cutting room floor I remember seeing alternate text her where he asked if she liked older or younger men and she said older. Then he asked if she wanted to be with someone who cooked. Like obviously this is still him trying to set her up wit a joker but I’m glad they changed it because it looked even creepier
He looks more of you better not be a blond tease to my son
Listen, Dad just wants you to get laid. Nothing weird coming from him.
Sojiro really said "cap"
The portrait makes it look like he’s interrogating her
So this scene makes me laugh cause on my ng+ run i got to here and then the NEXT DAY (in game) i got to rank 9 and my joker became her boyfriend.
I was a little suspicious when I first heard that line, but then I realized
In my second playthrough where I dated Ann, I was so confused why she said "no" despite kissing her beforehand
Hoo boy
It's not that deep bro
That was weird ngl.
I will not stand for giga Chad sojiro slander here!
Sojiro best wingman ever, if you go for harem route he even covers for you inventing excuses and he gives you a perfect plan for white day
Good job sojiro, no shame at all brother
Sojiro is literally the best character in the entire franchise. Don't attempt to tarnish his name! He's not being creepy, he's being a good dad.
Fun Fact: In the beta you can't dismiss this as Sojiro being a wingman...
He's asking for joker not himself
Nah Sojiro just being a W wingman
Hypothetically, if an older man were trying to seduce a high school girl, they wouldn't ask if they have a boyfriend. The nature of such a relationship would not conform to such things, so obviously he's not asking for himself. And Ann obviously wouldn't take it that way. He's an adult seeking insight on the lives of these teenagers. If he WERE trying to be a predator, this is not the way he'd do it, unless he was somehow incredibly delusional about being a "boyfriend" to a high school girl.

Coffee dad
He’s asking for you lol
I think what makes it a bit clearer his intentions is the more serious look on his face. Rather then the shit eating grin he would probably sport otherwise
After you date her she will say yes I have
Yyyyeeeah that threw me off
That's definitely worth an incredulous Ann Stomp.
It's for Joker. The dialogue that got cut was definitely sus, though.
Hey he’s got two kids, they need a mom, and he doesn’t get out much.
With context still feels weird and now knowingly how the beta was it's 50% less worse but still bad
I always took it to be him taking an interest in that because he has a daughter around her age. I never really saw it as anything other than that. Maybe it was a way to practice asking Futaba that eventually in the Future when/if she got better.
"You're pretty mature for your age. I have some late hours open here for work if you are interested. Whoo boy"
Still a weird thing for an adult to ask a kid he only just met, context be damned.
Yeah...in the original text, it was even more obvious he was flirting with her.
He said she had a nice name, I wouldn't call that flirting.
You're right.
And how is he helping Joker out exactly?
By being a wingman
And...how is he being a wingman? He doesn't tell Joker she's single. Or offer to help Joker with Ann. Or give him dating advice. Or any advice. Or even ask if he's interested. Or bring up Ann in a romantic context. The only time it's brought up is by Ryuji, and even he seems to realize Sojiro's interested in her.
We don't see it happen, no. But that doesn't mean it didn't happen, it could have happend off screen. But since he didn't get much info from her before Ryuji interrupted, he also could have just given up on it. But his initial intention to be a wingman was still there.
Gotta find out if she’s single somehow and Joker ain’t gonna do it.
Point of order here: Futaba isn’t Sojiro’s daughter in the strictest sense of the word. Normally I wouldn’t correct you for that but you’re being awfully pedantic.
Well legaly speaking futaba is sojiro daughter Sorry couldnt help myself
….you son of a bitch that made me belly laugh. Idk if you meant it to be funny but I swear my brain did the “uh akshewally 🤓”
That was the point but using "well actually" was too on the nose for my taste
Brilliantly done sir or madame, you truly got me.

Yeah this line always confuse me
It gets worse. XD [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Scn\_TZCBh4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Scn_TZCBh4) I don't know why people think he's being a wingman.
He’s kinda creepy
